History will be created on Friday when, for the first time ever, a football match will be played under lights on the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain.

The match will be the Northern Football Association’s knockout final, between RSSR and Alcons and it will be played on the pitch opposite Jerningham Avenue, near to the vendors’ stalls on the Savannah.

RSSR is a Beetham-based team which was founded by activist Ruthven Charles and named after football legends Russell Tesheira,Selris Figaro, Sammy Llewelyn and Reynold George.

Alcons, founded by former national player and coach Alvin Corneal, is based in east Trinidad but competed in the NFA this season.

On the road to the finals, Alcons defeated Premier Division league winners Maple, while RSSR overcame the First Division league champions Cultural Roots, thus ensuring that no team would complete the “double” in the nfa this season.

The teams will be doing battle for $25,000 in prize money. The match is scheduled to kick off at 7.30 p.m. and the NFA has promised, through its sponsors, to have giveaways for the crowd, an MVP award and music to help create a typical “Trini” atmosphere.

Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Darryl Smith, along with executive members of the TTFA have been invited to witness the match.
Public interest is high among the northern football fraternity and NFA president Tony Harford is optimistic the event will spark greater use of the Queen’s Park Savannah for sport after hours. Harford has also praised his NFA team for succesfully hosting 87 matches so far this season, on time and on schedule.

The NFA will complete it’s 2016 schedule with the Savannah Cup competition, starting on Tuesday of next week.
