T&T schoolboys unbeaten in B’dos.
By: Nigel Simon - T&T Guardian Reports.
16-Dec-2004 - Fatima College defender Machel James led a 17-member T&T
schoolboys team to an impressive three wins in the Barbados College Soccer
Showcase last weekend at the National Stadium in Waterford.
In their opening match the T&T team, comprising players from Fatima College,
Queen’s Royal College, St Mary’s College and El Dorado Senior Comprehensive
School and coached by Garnet Pierre, blanked US team Virginia Casl 2-0 with
goals from St Mary’s College player Jack Weedon, and Dwight Crichlow of El
Dorado Senior Secondary.
Next up for the T&T schoolboys was a Barbadian combined senior team, who
they whipped 5-1, led by a double from Aldo Hope (St Mary’s College) and one
each from Weedon, Kedan Crosby (former Fatima) and James.
Hope and Kern Gardiner (ex-Fatima player) then netted in a narrow 2-1 victory
over a Jamaica XI to complete an unbeaten tournament for the T&T players who
drew high praises from the US coaches at the showcase, hosted by the Barbados
Football Association (BFA), in conjunction with the Harvard Sports Management
Group Inc (USA) and Sporting Zones (BRB).
At the end of the three-day event, team co-ordinator Kenny Rosemin noted that
all 17 T&T players were offered full athletic scholarships by the visiting
US schools, but they all need to complete the SAT 1 exam.
St Anthony fall 2-1 to Jamaican
All-Stars.
By: Nigel Simon.
06-Dec-2004 - Steven Morrissey scored a second-half brace as the Jamaican
Secondary Schools All-Stars-comprising players mainly from the Excelsior High
School (champion team) and Glenmuir High School-edged St Anthony’s College 2-1
at Westmoorings, yesterday.
On a lush green surface, hosts “Westmoorings Tigers”, three-time reigning
national RBTT Inter-Col champion, took the deserved lead in the 18th-minute
through midfielder Troy Thompson which they carried into the interval.
But on the resumption, the Jamaicans, who beat national Secondary Schools
Football League champion St Augustine Senior Comprehensive, 2-1 on Friday, took
the match to St Anthony’s and tied the score through Morrissey in the 68th
minute.
Ten minutes later, Morrissey again netted. The visitors then withstood a late
push by St Anthony’s to hold on for the win.
Morrissey was also on target in the win over St Augustine, with Garnel Learmond
netting a last-minute winner on Friday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.
Aaron Peters scored for St Augustine.
Following the completion of the match, all three teams, St Augustine, St
Anthony’s College and the visiting Jamaica team were feted by the SSFL at St
Anthony’s.
The SSFL 2004 end-of-season prize-giving function is scheduled for January 25 at
the Rudranath Capildeo Learning Resource Centre in Couva from 5 pm.
Jamaican schoolboys derail Green Machine.
By: Kern De Freitas - T&T Express Reports.
04-Dec-2004 - Despite dominating the match and the chances on goal, national
Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) "Big Five" champions St
Augustine Senior Secondary fell to only their second loss for 2004 when they
went down 2-1 to a combined Jamaican champion school XI yesterday at the Hasely
Crawford Stadium.
The visitors-in Trinidad for a two-match tour on which they will face both the
SSFL National League and Intercol champs-pulled off a goal in the final minute
of regulation time to start their visit on a high note.
The Glenmuir High/Excelsior High School team started the match more watchfully,
trying to stave off the early chances by the "Green Machine", who
began in a very attacking mood.
The Jamaicans seemed to be playing for the swift counter-attack, and that plan
bore fruit.
In the 17th minute, an unmarked Steven Morrissey collected a pass on the left
and rounded St Augustine 'keeper Nigel Parris to slot home after the linesman's
flag stayed down for two advancing forwards, catching the East Zone champs'
defence off-guard.
St Augustine had a swift reply, though, equalising two minutes later, in the
19th, through Aaron Peters.
He received the ball just outside the 18-metre box and made room for himself
between two defenders, before placing low to the right of Andrew Land in the
Jamaican goal.
National Under-17 player Shastri Spencer did not have a very good game, but
still managed to trouble Land with a shot just overbar in the 24th, while John
Stewart had Land diving at full stretch to his right in the 37th, but only hit
the side netting, the teams going in at the interval at 1-1.
In the second half, St Augustine went on the hunt for the winner, but their
attack seemed to lose focus, having trouble finding the mark. The Jamaicans,
too, stepped up their game, and nearly found a goal in the 56th, Anthony
Christie shooting wide with just Parris to beat, then chipped overbar in a
similar situation in the 70th.
In the 87th, the visitors thought they had had the winner, Garnell Learmond
side-stepping the advancing Parris and passing to Norado Brown, who knocked
home, but the linesman's flag was up. But they would have their win through
Learmond, who found himself free on the right and slotted under Parris to give
them the 2-1 victory.
The Jamaicans will face RBTT Intercol champs, the St Anthony's
"Tigers", at home at their Westmoorings ground tomorrow afternoon,
before returning home on Tuesday.
