No Barnsley trial for Ansil Elcock.
Barnsley Website.
11-Apr-2002 - Trinidad and Tobago international defender Ansil Elcock is not
having a trial at Barnsley FC, according to Reds chief scout Russell
Richardson.
Russell spoke exclusively to the Official Website this afternoon and said:
“We know of him and his name was touted around most of the clubs in the
First Division at Christmas time but we have never spoken to the player or his
agent.
“His name has been faxed around and was referred to us around the time when
Chris Morgan and Lee Crooks were suspended but the rumours are not true and he
is not coming on trial to Oakwell”.
Elcock, who is 33, is looking to leave MLS side Columbus Crewe had it had been
reported that he was set for a brief spell at Barnsley.
Ansil Elcock signs with Jabloteh.
By Shaun Fuentes.
10-Apr-2002 - National defender Ansil Elcock has signed a deal to play for CL
Financial San Juan Jabloteh in the local Professional League this season. The
former Columbus Crew player revealed on the weekend that he returns to the
United States this week to sort out some business with the American Major
League and will then return to join the Jabloteh camp.
A trial with English club Barnsley is also on the cards. "I have to
finalise some paperwork with the MLS. I turned down the four-year deal because
what they offered me was not suitable. I might also be carded to go on a trial
with Barnsley in England and if things do work out, hopefully I'll be playing
in Europe by June," said Elcock. He also showed his support for the
continuing role of Technical Director Rene Simoes.
"To me Rene Simoes is a great coach and I think now we really need him so
I hope everything can be sorted out. I understand that he needs his salary
like any of us and I also understand that he wants to make sure the project
can be funded," Elcock said.
Ansil Elcock says Simoes like a father figure.
By: Shaun Fuente.
22-Jan-2002 - Trinidad and Tobago defender Ansil Elcock is likely to be going
on trial at some undisclosed clubs in coming weeks. He took time out after
Sunday's game to speak about the team's performance and the work of coach Rene
Simoes.
"A result like that was good. We didn't play as well as we wanted to. We
were lacking game fitness but I think the result was good for us. Costa Rica
is a World Cup team and now we just have to go and get the job done against
Martinique on Tuesday night. We will be looking to win by three clear goals
and win the group" said Elcock.
"I think Canada are the easier team to play in the next round because
Haiti are a physical team and they can take the rhythm out of us by playing us
that way," he added.
About Simoes, Elcock was high in compliments saying "Simoes is a great
coach. He isn't only helpful football wise but he motivates you, he speaks to
you as an individual. Take me for example, he's been telling me that I need to
have a great Gold Cup so that I can picked up by another club. He really does
look out for you and is more like a father figure as well."
Ansil Elcock Looking for Employment.
By Irving Ward
19-Jan-2002 - When Trinidad and Tobago defender Ansil Elcock finishes his
stint at the 2002 Concacaf Gold Cup, he will be heading to either Europe or
Asia to seek employment.
This because Elcock has parted ways with Major League Soccer outfit, Columbus
Crew.
The Crew reportedly waived Elcock to make room for new talent in the
forthcoming season earlier this week, after he had given them four straight
years of service.
But, noting that he was looking to move on anyway, Elcock tells a different
story.
"My contract with Columbus ended on December 31 and I'm now a free-agent,
so don't see how they can waive someone who is not under contract with
them," Elcock said.
"I spoke with the coach (Greg Andrulis) and he told me that due to the
new rule allowing clubs only three overseas players, they needed to make room
on
their roster."
However, Crew coach Andrulis defended his decision to let Elcock and veteran
US player John Harkes go, pointing out he had no choice.
"We (Crew) were two senior internationals over the limit and we were over
the salary cap. We had to be compliant on both of those, and there wasn't any
leeway," Andrulis said.
"It has nothing to do with not liking Harkes or Ansil, they were both
warriors for us and they're great guys, but at the end of the day, we had to
make very hard decisions."
While not totally ruling out a return to the USA if the needs exists, Elcock
says he is now hoping to emulate his cousin, Stern John, by making a move to
England.
"I already have some trials lined up with some clubs in the English
Division One after the Gold Cup. And if that does not work out, there is
something on the cards for me to go to China, the MLS will be my last
resort."
The only T&T star now left in the MLS is former Defence Force striker,
Gary Glasgow, who plays for the Kansas City Wizards.
He just failed to make the Gold Cup squad. Last November, national defender
Craig Demmin (Tampa Bay Mutiny) and Joe Public's Kevin Adams (Columbus Crew)
were among a list of 26 players who were waived by their MLS clubs.

Traded, Elcock Waived As Crew Adjusts 2002 Roster
The Columbus Crew eliminated their senior international overload on Tuesday,
trading Ugandan defender Tenwya Bonseu to the Dallas Burn, then waiving
Trinidaidian veteran Ansil Elcock. Elcock joined The Crew in 1997, while
Bonseu was allocated to the team prior to the 2001 campaign. John Harkes has
also become an unsigned free agent as Columbus works toward refining the 2002
roster.
Ansil is another victim of the limit on the number of Senior Internationls
permitted on each roster," Smith continued. "I thank him for five
years of distinguished service to our organization and wish him nothing but
the best.
Elcock, who hails from Trinidad and Tobago, appeared in 116 matches for The
Crew from 1997-2001.
"It is difficult to part with such outstanding players and fine
gentlemen," said Crew head coach Greg Andrulis. "But it is an
unavoidable part of the business and our focus must turn quickly now to moving
forward with the talented roster we have in place. The three Senior
Internationls we have retained are tremendous players who I expect will have a
major positive impact on a successful 2002 season."
