John severs ties with Town

Defender Avery John has parted company with eircom League Premier Division side Longford Town by mutual consent after just a year at Flancare Park.

It is thought that John’s commitment to Trinidad and Tobago for international matches is part of the reason for the departure as the club are reported to be unhappy with the amount of time the 28-year-old was unavailable for selection.

The former Bohemians and Shelbourne defender has struggled for peak fitness all season, and seen the Town central defensive positions nailed down by Brian McGovern and skipper Barry Ferguson.

He now must seek a club elsewhere, although it is not certain whether he will be remain in Ireland or try his luck once more in England, where he had a short spell at Colchester United last year.

John played professionally for A-League sides New Orleans and Boston Bulldogs before moving to the eircom league where he has generally been – whenever he has played – one of the Premier Division’s most consistent defenders.
