Brent Rahim eager to join Jabloteh ranks.
By Joel Villafana.
09-Mar-2006 - National midfielder Brent Rahim is currently in training with
CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh, with a view for signing for the F.A Cup and
Pro Bowl Champions for the upcoming 2006 season. Rahim, who has had a run of
injuries that has affected his career, is hoping to be fully fit in time for
the start of the 2006 T&T Pro League. He has been training under
Jabloteh coach Terry Fenwick over the last week and he has impressed the
former English international.
Terry Fenwick said, “Brent is a player with experience overseas and he can
definitely add something to our squad, I know he has making the world cup
squad on his mind and what better place to be than in a Jabloteh squad, I
think he is a good player with good vision, a hard worker and I think he
would be a good addition.”
Rahim, has been in and out of national teams and last played for Trinidad
and Tobago in the 2005 Concacaf Gold Cup against Colombia.
He has had some experience on the European circuit, he spent a season at
Falkirk in Scotland, and was also at West Ham United for a while, but in
recent times, he has been out of a steady contract, having recent trials in
Bulgaria, Sweden, and in the MLS with Dallas FC.
Rahim is however, looking forward to playing on the local circuit, he told
ttproleague.com, “The option of coming back home was always an option for
him and he is looking forward to signing with Jabloteh and playing his part
this season.” The talented midfielder says he is now fully fit, and he is
hoping to make an impression with Jabloteh so he can possibly attract the
attention National coach Leo Beenhakker before the World Cup Finals in
Germany. All things being equal Brent Rahim will have the opportunity to
show what he has to offer to local fans when he lines up in Jabloteh
colours.
Brent Rahim to return home.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
16-Feb-2006 - Midfielder Brent Rahim may consider the option of returning
home to join a local Pro League team before the 2006 World Cup. The former
West Ham United player travelled to the USA last month to join the Dallas FC
team in training with intentions of signing a deal but was forced away
after, according to him, the club could not sign him due to their limit of
overseas-signings already being filled up.
“It was difficult because I spent some time at the club but in the end
they were supposed to get rid of one of the international players and it did
not turn out that way. I might just look to come back home and play with one
of the Pro League teams,” Rahim said on Monday.

07-Jan-2006 - Having spent much of the latter part of 2005 away from playing action, midfielder Brent Rahim is expected to return home next week before heading off to the United States to take up a new offer.
Rahim, a former standout with NCAA champions University of Connecticut is likely to head to MLS side Dallas FC to take up a new contract.
Rahim’s last dealing with the National Team was for the final round World Cup qualifier against USA in Connecticut where he was ruled out during training with a calf strain. He has since recovered and has been keeping himself fit but has not being playing matches.
“I will be coming home and then heading off to the US because I definitely need to start playing competitively again. I have a couple things to sort out and then after further talks with my agent I should have something finalised in the MLS,” Rahim said on Monday.
Brent Rahim signs up in Sweden.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
14-Sept-2005 - Brent Rahim has been signed by Swedish Second Division club
IF Sylvia with an aim to strengthening their midfield as they seek First
Division promotion.
The former West Ham United midfielder spent a week training with the club
prior to T&T’s 3-2 win over Guatemala and eventually signed the day
before the victory. His deal is up until the end of the current season in
October with the option to extending.
So far he has played in one of their fixtures and is likely to start in
another match this weekend.
“They signed me to try and add something to their midfield because they
are pressing for promotion right now,” Rahim said. “They have taken
extremely good care of me and the important thing is for me to start playing
at a decent level,” Rahim said on Tuesday. Sylvia is currently top of
their group and once they finish the regular season there they will then
enter a playoff for promotion at the end of October.
Brent Rahim searching for club.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
15-Jun-2005 - Midfielder Brent Rahim, coming off a reasonably good second
half performance in the recent match against Mexico, has returned to London
in search of a new club after being released by Falkirk at the end of last
season. The talented player has some options to consider including an offer
from American MLS side LA Galaxy.
“I am hoping to find something which would obviously allow me a lot more
playing time than I had in Scotland. There are a couple clubs interested but
I have to make a firm decision and take it from there,”Rahim said.
Defender Brent Sancho is also hoping to make a new move with the likes of
Nottingham Forest, Falkirk and Motherwell knocking on his doors.
Rahim wants to be permanent ‘Warrior’
T&T Newsday Reports.
31-May-2005 - National midfielder Brent Rahim is trying to cement a
first-team pick as the CONCACAF World Cup Final Round qualifiers heat up.
But the 26-year-old playmaker will also be keeping his fingers crossed as he
seeks to recover from an injured right knee, sustained during Friday
night’s friendly international against Bermuda. Rahim noted recently that:
“I’ve been back and, in the camp, it’s a good, positive vibe. “I’m
getting used to the new coach (Leo Beenhakker) and just enjoying the
sessions so far,” he added. Rahim is currently a free agent after his
two-year contract with Scottish First Division champions Falkirk expired a
few weeks ago.
“Basically, I’m going to be looking around, in Germany and certain
places,” he said. “I’ll have to see how things go by June.” When
asked about any specific clubs, he replied: “Not any that I want to
disclose at the moment. I have to go and train, go on a trial basis and see
how things turn out.” Trinidad and Tobago will host Panama at the
Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, on Saturday followed by a trip to Mexico
on Wednesday. According to Rahim, “these games are crucial, for me and for
all the guys here. “It’s a big opportunity for us and we all realise how
crucial it is, for our careers as well,” he continued.
“I think everybody will be taking a positive step towards these games
coming up.” And it will be vital for Rahim to make an impression on the
new coaching staff after inconsistent displays at the senior level.
“I’ve been out of the team and I’ve been looking on at things,” he
remarked. “With a new coach here and a new system, we’ve been trying to
keep possession of the ball. “Tactically, in terms of my game, I’ve been
trying to help the team (in the midfield),” Rahim affirmed.
Brent Rahim looks for new club.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
11-May-2005 - Midfielder Brent Rahim was released by Falkirk FC on the
weekend and is now in England trying to secure a new offer.
Falkirk coach John Hughes confirmed that the former St Anthony’s College
player, along with four others, were allowed to leave as the club prepares
for its new season in the Premier League.
Rahim had an up and down career at the club, appearing several times and
performing creditably for the Reserves, without much chance with the first
team.
“Things just weren’t going well for me at the club and the time seems
just right for me to move on.
“I need to go to a club where I can be playing first team football and not
be left frustrated on the bench for long periods,” Rahim said on Monday.
“There was no support for me really at Falkirk. Aside from having to prove
myself each time I got back from international duty, I never really got a
good chance to get back into the first team.”
Rahim is scheduled to return home on Monday to join the T&T team on
invitation of coach Leo Beenhakker. Also released last week was striker
Jason Norville from Watford.
Brent Rahim to come home.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
27-Apr-2005 - Scottish-based midfielder Brent Rahim is likely to return home
next month to train with the National Senior team ahead of the next 2006
World Cup qualifier against Panama on June 4.
Rahim, who has been performing creditably for Falkirk Reserves, playing in a
forward position as well, has not been given a break in the first team and
is keen to either move on, or sort out a new contract at the Falkirk in time
for the team’s entry to the Premiers League next season.
But aside from that, Rahim wants to at least give National coach Leo
Beenhakker a chance at seeing him.
“It’s been a bit rough, but I think maybe I can come back and get some
training under my belt with the new coach and try to at least earn a spot in
the team again,” said Rahim, who last lined up for T&T in qualifying
match against Mexico last year in Puebla.
Also carded to return home next month is Dundee United striker Collin
Samuel, who has been getting some playing time in the first team. Bolton
Wanderers’ Ricky Shakes is also expected back around the same time.
Meantime, current Connection player Atiba Charles is counting down the days
before he returns for pre-season training with Oldham Athletic. He is also
looking at options in Scotland.
Brent Rahim aims to get back in under Beenhakker.
Issued By: Shaun Fuentes.
15-Apr-2005 - Trinidad and Tobago’s Scottish-based midfielder Brent Rahim
is setting his mind on forcing his way back into the National Team under new
coach Leo Beenhakker.
That was the indication given by the talented Falkirk player on Friday as he
explained the ups and downs of his current season which saw him slip to the
bench for Falkirk and out of the National team which he last played for in a
3-0 loss to Mexico in Puebla City.
The 26-year-old celebrated Falkirk’s winning of the Scottish First
Division last week alongside countryman Russell Latapy. The win also booked
their place into the Premier League for next season but Rahim could be left
considering other options as his contract runs out at the end of the season.
“Honestly speaking, this has been a very difficult year for me in terms of
playing time. I have been in and out of the Falkirk team and then I got
dropped from the national team during the latter part of last year. I have
been training and playing regularly with the reserves and getting short runs
with the first team but it just hasn’t been good enough,” Rahim told
TTFF Media on Friday.
His agent is carded to hold talks with Falkirk next week and Rahim is hoping
that there will be some resolution regarding his playing time. Possible
moves to Belgium or the German Bundesliga are in the pipeline but Rahim said
that the chance of playing in the Premier League with Falkirk could also
lead to him signing a new contract once an offer comes through.
“There are possible options but they have said here that new contracts
will be on the table for some of the guys and obviously new faces will be
coming in for next season. The main thing is I will be better off at a club
where I’m getting playing time. Last year turned out tough because I gave
a lot of my time to the national team and at the same time the club team was
flying high in the League which meant it was always going to be difficult
for me to get back into the first team. And then just like that I didn’t
get recalled to the National team which came like a kick in the chest for
me,” added Rahim, who has been used mostly in a right midfield and
wingback position at Falkirk.
“Once there is some sort of compromise which could see me getting back
into the first team then I will be happy but if not then I’ll obviously
have to move on because the main thing for me now is to get back into first
team action.”
The former West Ham United player is hoping to touch base with Beenhakker
this month when the Dutchman visits Scotland to meet with T&T’s
overseas pros and then possibly return home to get in a few sessions with
the team once the chance arises in May. Dundee United striker Jason Scotland
is also hoping to get back into the mix. Rahim's return could give
Beenhakker options to consider with Silvio Spann, Carlos Edwards, Leslie
Fitzpatrick, Arnold Dwarika, Angus Eve, Dwight Yorke and David Nakhid at his
disposal.
“I’m thankful for (Bertille) St Clair for giving me the chance to get in
the team but it was also disappointing to just get shelved last year,”
said Rahim. “Now I’m hoping that I can come back and add something
positive to the team under the new coach. I’ve kept on training and I am
still willing to come back and give whatever I can in my capacity as a
player for the team.”
Rahim, who rose to the spotlight when he made his senior debut in 2000 in a
team which included Stern John, Dwight Yorke, Russell Latapy, David Nakhid,
Angus Eve, Anthony Rougier, Marvin Andrews and others, is hopeful of having
similar impact this time around, stating also that Latapy’s appointment as
assistant coach was big news at Falkirk.
“From my understanding, he’s looking forward to coming back home and
getting involved in the national team again and it’s been big news at the
club here. The new coach obviously is a plus at the moment and I think all
of the guys are just waiting on the chance to start working under him and I
think Russell is just as enthusiastic as everyone else,” ended Rahim who
netted for Falkirk’s Reserves in a 1-1 draw with Greenock Morton on
Tuesday.
Dundee looks at Brent Rahim.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
15-Sept-2004 - Midfielder Brent Rahim could just find himself looking for
another club as the current season progresses.
The hardworking midfielder has been left on the sidelines in recent weeks by
Falkirk coach John Hughes following his stint with the national team for
matches against Thailand and South Korea.
Rahim, who returned to Scotland on Saturday, was hoping to force his way
back into the squad for the Cup fixture against Celtic, having been playing
mostly for the reserves.
Rahim’s teammate, Brent Sancho, now with Dundee in the Premier League,
hinted that his club may be interested in Rahim and has backed the possible
signing.
“I think Brent would be an excellent addition to the Dundee set-up because
he’s that sort of player who will suit our team well and the manager will
be happy with a player like him—the sort who will give you the extra bit
of fight,” said Sancho. “It’s no secret that Brent is getting a raw
deal with Falkirk these days and it’s no fault of his, but rather them
just being unhappy that he’s playing for his country in World Cup
qualifiers. Hopefully, something will work out for him soon.”
Brent Rahim signs an 18-month extension to his Falkirk contract.
www.falkirkfc.co.uk.
05-Dec-2003 - Falkirk FC is delighted to announce that Brent Rahim, who joined the Club in the summer, has today signed an eighteen-month extension to his current contract. Contrary to inaccurate reports elsewhere, Brent’s deal was verbally agreed last Friday, and officially signed today.
The Trinidad and Tobago midfielder, who initially signed up until January, has impressed with a string of sterling performances and has committed himself to the Club until the summer of 2005.
Head Coach John Hughes was delighted to break the news, saying, “It’s been apparent to myself and Brian Rice for while now, that Brent was a player we needed to keep at the Club. He is very adaptable, and can play a number of different positions on the right hand side. His delivery of the ball is exceptional, and we are absolutely delighted at his decision to extend. The Board have been very supportive of our wishes, and the timing is excellent, as there is no doubt that a number of clubs would have been looking at Brent, and hoping to pick him up for free in January.”
Yogi reckons this news will delight the fans, almost as much as him, “I think the fans really appreciate Brent’s work ethic, and the shift he puts in. It’s certainly impressed Brian Rice and I in the short time that Brent has been at the Club. I also think that the length of the deal shows, that whilst our remit this season is to win the first division, we are planning for the future. Brent is at just the right age, and I’m sure his career will really blossom at Falkirk.”
John went on, “I realise that we will be needing a striker come January, but I’m sure people will agree that Brent was one we just couldn’t let slip away. I’m sure with the backing and support of the Board of Directors we can work something out.”
Rahim, 25, has played for his country on over thirty occasions, and counts Northampton Town, West Ham United and Levski Sofia among his former clubs.
And, according to the TTFF media man, Shaun Fuentes, Brent Rahim admits that he had been taking a while to adapt to the faster pace of Scottish football but he now believes that he is ready to take on the best of the League across there.
Having recently signed a 18-month extension to his contract, Rahim also hopes he can take his developed talent into the national team as the 2006 World Cup qualifying journey looms.
"The football is a bit different here. It takes some getting used to. The game up here a bit more to the point. I'm used to short passing but it's all part of adjusting to the style of football, to the pace of the game and the physical aspects," said Rahim who has had
stints with Northampton Town, Brentford and West Ham United in England ''Some of my friends play down south and took a while to get used to it. In a sense I'm ahead of that because I've been in Europe a bit so I've come to terms with the weather and everything," he added.
Rahim has been a hit with the fans alongside Russell Latapy at Falkirk as they continue their attempts to win the First Division title and gain promotion to the Premier League. Falkirk are 4th on the table with 29 points, four less than leaders Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Brent Rahim gets an early birthday present.
By: Flex.
01-Aug-2003 - With 7 days away from his birthday, TnT midfielder Brent Rahim
today signed for Falkirk. Rahim left the Falkirk coaching staff impressed
with displays as a trialist against Craigroyston, Wigan Athletic and Celtic
to win a six-month deal. Falkirk boss John Hughes is happy with what he has
seen, “Brent has impressed us with both his natural ability, and his
work-rate in training.
The fans had a glimpse of him against Wigan, and I thought he did extremely
well in that game. He’s another valuable addition to the squad.” Russell
Latapy the former Trinidad and Tobago midfield general who's player/coach at
Falkirk was the one who recommended Brent Rahim to the club.
The Club are currently finalising arrangements for a work permit for Brent
Rahim, although it is not expected that this will be secured in time for
Brent to make his debut tomorrow in a feature match against Brechin City in
the Bell’s Challenge Cup.
Meanwhile, according to the Falkirk Herald, Brent Rahim is the third
Trinidadian star to come to Falkirk in less than a year, and the least
heralded of the trio.
But promising early performances show that the 24-year-old, with more than
30 caps for Trinidad and Tobago, could turn out to be the best yet.
Rahim lasted one year of a three-deal with Levski Sofia but was keen to
break into the UK. After a six-month loan spell at West Ham he joined
Northampton under Terry Fenwick, who had coached in Trinidad. But Fenwick
lasted just a handful of games and Rahim was on the move again.
Now he wants to settle down. His work permit should come in time for a
competitive debut against Inverness and he said: ''I want to be in a
situation where I'm comfortable and am playing regularly and this might be
the right scenario. It's good that Russell is here because he's a big
inspiration to young players in Trinidad. A lot of us have looked up to him
for his ability and I'm happy to be working with him.
''I first heard about Falkirk when Collin Samuel came here and I knew he was
doing well. He's moved on to the SPL but my aim is to get Falkirk into that
position. ''Everybody's been great to me so far and I just can't wait for
the season to start.
Brent Rahim On Trial With Brentford.
Brentford Football Club Website.
8-Jul-2003 - Trinidad & Tobago International Brent Rahim has joined the Bees on trial.
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder had spells at West Ham United and Northampton Town last season, on loan from Bulgarian club Levski Sofia.
After falling to make the first team with The Hammers, he moved to Northampton. He left after six games following the sacking of Manager Terry Fenwick, but impressed during his time at Sixfields.
It appears a work-permit would be required for his services, but he has been a regular in the Trinidad & Tobago side over the past three years, part of the stipulations for overseas players plying their trade here in the United Kingdom.
Striker Paul Geddes is also spending time at the Club. He played in a pre-season friendly two years ago at Chertsey Town, scoring twice in a six-nil win. He has now finished University in Yorkshire, and is being given a second chance to shine.
Brent Rahim may get new Town offer.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
15-Apr-2003 - Midfielder Brent Rahim is likely to be offered a full contract
in time for next season according to Northampton Town manager Martin
Wilkinson.
The man who took over from Terry Fenwick earlier this year was speaking
during an interview at Sixfields Stadium, Northampton on Monday following a
match between local club Superstar Rangers and the Northampton Under 17
team.
Rahim has been at Northampton on a loan spell from Levski Sofia but has not
been a regular and Wilkinson admitted that he knew little of the T&T
player. But now he has been impressed after having further looks at him
earlier this month.
“I haven’t seen much of Brent but I got a good look at him last week.
Suddenly he catches the eye because he picks up a ball and goes past two
players as if they were two dustbins just standing there and makes a cross
in and you think oh, this lad has got something special. The unfortunate
thing has been that he has been out to Trinidad for international duty. But
he’s certainly shown attributes that we haven’t got at the club and he
seems a smashing lad as well. His character is superb” said Wilkinson,
“We’ve got nine players out of contracts at the end of the season and I
think we could be more than willing to offer Brent a better deal. We’re
going off to Trinidad and he’s going to be playing with us and I think
we’re definitely going to offer him something after this trip,” added
the manager whose claim to fame, according to reports in England was that he
was the man responsible for discovering England goalkeeper David Seaman.
Confident Rahim stands by Fenwick.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
26-Feb-2003 - Northampton Town midfielder Brent Rahim insists confidence is
still high in the team camp despite the club dropping to 22nd spot on the
table and battling to avoid relegation.
Rahim joined the club last month on loan from Bulgarian club Levski Sofia,
being signed by ex-CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh coach Terry Fenwick who
was sacked on Monday. Fenwick was in charge for only seven weeks in which
the club drew twice and lost five games.
"I don't think anybody's head is down, there's nothing like that
creeping into the dressing room at the moment.
"We are still confident that we can turn it around," said Rahim
who has one goal this season. "I think we just have to keep plugging
away to get a result. In this situation you just have to stay confident and
stay positive, that is the best thing," said the T&T midfielder.
Rahim also defended Fenwick just days before the announcement of his
sacking.
"Terry is still patient. He is a newcomer here, I am new here, and it's
going to take time for everything to start kicking in and go in the right
direction. He has been getting things across to the players and we are
getting used to playing together. It isn't going to happen for us overnight,
it is going to take a little time, but I definitely think things will turn
around for us," Rahim said.
The club's Assistant Manager Martin Wilkinson will take over as Caretaker
Manager for the foreseeable future.
Fenwick signs Brent Rahim at Northampton.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
16-Jan-2003 - Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Brent Rahim has agreed terms
with English Second Division club Northampton Town and will join the club
for the remainder of the season on loan from Bulgarian side Levski Sofia.
Terry Fenwick, the former coach of the local club champions CL Financial San
Juan Jabloteh grasped on the opportunity to sign Rahim after learning that
his six-month spell at West Ham United ended this month.
Rahim, was originally carded to join Luton Town but according to the ex-St
Anthony's College star, he is just relieved to have joined a club where he
will play first team football.
"Definitely I'm just glad that things have been sorted out now. I know
the coach of this club and it's like a fresh start for both of us. He's been
very positive and playing for this club is something I'm looking forward to.
It's just a matter of us finishing up some paper work and I should be
playing for them by next week," Rahim told TTFF Media from his Essex
apartment on Thursday. He is expected to move to the Marriot Hotel closer to
the club later this month.
Both Fenwick and Rahim mentioned that the latest development should not
affect the player's involvement with the National team for the upcoming Gold
Cup qualifiers starting here on March 26.
Fenwick was equally delighted with getting Rahim.
"I'm delighted that we've been able to sign Brent until the end of the
season. I couldn't get his work permit transferred in time for this weekend
but we should have him read for the big derby against Peterborough next
weekend," Fenwick told TTFF Media.
"He's on loan to us from the Bulgarian club and I'm almost sure he will
do well in this team. We see him as a player who is better than the standard
in this Division and as such we are delighted to get him on board. We will
look at the option of signing him full time as well and maybe look to get
him out elsewhere.
Fenwick, who is also the representative for Pro Sports Caribbean, was
responsible for Colin Samuel's signing with Scottish First Division club
Falkirk. Samuel is now set to join English Premiership club Everton along
with Falkirk teammate Lee Miller later this month. Fenwick also wants to
have Nigel Pierre at Northampton.
"I'm also hoping to have Nigel up here as well because I think he can
do well in this League. He's gone around too many times and this is now make
or break time for him. Even though I've left Trinidad, I am still looking
out for the country's football because there are a lot of good professionals
there. There are a lot of people I've enjoyed working with and I will do my
part to see where I can assist in their careers.
"I am sure Jabloteh and some of the other clubs will be sympathetic
when I come and ask for their players," Fenwick added with laughter.
"I haven't forgotten Trinidad because I had two terrific years out
there and I will maintain the contact with my colleagues and friends and
hopefully we can share in some good business," added the former England
international.
Brent Rahim moves to Luton.
Shaun Fuentes.
15-Jan-2003 - Brent Rahim has been sent to Luton Town FC with hope of
playing more first team football. According to West Ham United manager Glenn
Roeder, Rahim was released following the six-month loan deal with the
"Hammers" because he was not getting sufficient first team
football, as a matter of fact, he appeared only for the Reserves.
"We've sent Brent to Luton with the hope that he can play more first
team football which is what he really needs. Hopefully he'll get a contract
there," said Roeder.
Rahim meanwhile remained anxious about representing T&T as he is likely
to be recalled for the upcoming CFU Gold Cup qualifiers here from March
26-30.
"Definitely I've grown as a player. I think the experience of playing
with some of the top players here who have represented England and other
countries, I've gained experience and I can take this with me and utilize it
as best as possible. I've learned a lot over the six months that I've been
here. Now it's just a matter of me putting it into use on the international
scene for our national team," Rahim said.
Brent Rahim rumbles on.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
26-Nov-2002 - T&T Midfielder Brent Rahim is confident of forcing his way
into the West Ham United first team and is banking on the current national
team to improve in the coming months. Rahim said progress in both instances
will come in due time.
Rahim in West Ham colours.
Rahim scored his third goal of the season in West Ham Reserves' 3-0 victory
over Nottingham Forest earlier this month and continues to press for a spot
in the "Hammers" Premiership team. Rahim netted with an 18-yard
shot in the eighth minute and then weaved his way clear before setting up
Richard Garcia for the second item in front of manager Glenn Roeder.
"The most I could do at this time is hope that the team starts doing
well and hopefully the manager will have the confidence to put in the new
guys like me.
"The team isn't doing the best right now and he has to be very careful
about his decisions. A few of us are on the fringe of selection," said
Rahim.
"All I can do now is keep my head up and keep the faith," said the
former St Anthony's College star.
Commenting on the senior team under Hannibal Najjar who stated the
overseas-based professionals will have to work their way back into the
squad, Rahim said: "I definitely want to be part of it. We have people
like Stern and others who are doing well out here and hopefully we can come
back and share our experience and help get things back on track.
"I wanted to come back for this last tournament but because of the
situation here, I had to miss out but I am definitely looking forward to the
next stage.
"We have to help the new coach. He has to get the best available squad
together at home and when the overseas guys come back, we should just be
able to add substance to it. People might say that the team now is not the
best one but we need to be patient," said Rahim.
Brent Rahim: 'Now it's my chance to play'
By: Shaun Fuentes.
23-Aug-2002 - Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Brent Rahim was on Friday given
the all clear to play for West Ham United in the English Premiership.
The 24-year-old midfielder is now on loan from Bulgarian club Levski Sofa
until January and according to his progress, could be offered a longer deal
by West Ham boss Glenn Roeder who expressed his delight with Rahim’s go
ahead.
Up to Thursday, officials of the club were constantly in contact with the
Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation for verification of Rahim’s
international appearances before the permit was finally granted for the
former St Anthony’s College star. Two internationals including T&T’s
fixture against Cuba and Martinique in the 2002 Copa Caribe were inquired.
Rahim was delighted with finally being granted the chance to play for the
“Hammers” now.
“Everyone has their contracts now and I had been working towards it . I
had to be on top of my game right through,” Rahim told TTFF Media on
Friday. “Now I’m really relieved to have gotten things cleared and I can
finally get the chance to play. I actually heard of the news of the permit
this morning (Friday) and while I wasn’t actually worried about not
getting the permit, I was just hoping for it to come through quickly so that
I can start playing ,” said Rahim. “It was just a question of the club
wanting to verify a couple of things and I am thankful for the assistance of
the Federation as well”.
Rahim admitted that he went through a strenuous period with the
“Hammers” over the past few weeks.
Up to Friday afternoon he was yet to be informed if I would be in the team
to face Arsenal on Saturday. Currently Brent is occupying a suite at the
recently constructed extension at Upton Park which is used mostly by club
officials and has a view to the field from every room. Rahim is likely to
move into a nearby flat soon.
“I have put a lot of energy into this. I really wanted it so everyday it
was a case of going out there and having to impress in each session. I’m
about the fittest I’ve ever been right now and I am looking forward to
making the team. While there are some other players here also on loan and
stuff, I know my capabilities because if I wasn’t good enough then I would
not be here in the first place,” said Rahim, who mentioned that he has
been told that he will be used both in the reserve and first teams.
Rahim said that he is being used in his preferred central midfield position
and will now aim to continue where he left off before being offered the on
loan deal.
“The next two weeks will be vital. He (Roeder) wants to see how quickly I
can improve and get myself up to the level which both he and I know will
only come with playing games. I just have to take things step by step”.
About Roeder’s relationship with him thus far, Rahim added “To be fair,
he’s been very honest. He told me he’s giving me the opportunity as
he’s seen enough in me to warrant the move. He tells you things straight
up and I’m pleased about that because it’s the most you can ask for from
a coach”.
The midfielder also thanked T&T captain Shaka Hislop for his past input
at West Ham, which he said has made his stay there so far a most comfortable
one. “Shaka has made quite an impact here before and this had made it
easier for me”.
Roeder was keen to see Rahim in action now following his one appearance so
far against Tottenham Hotspur in a training game in which he (Rahim) was up
against Les Ferdinand.
Brent Rahim's Hammers switch approved.
TEAMtalk News.
23-Aug-2002 - Trinidad and Tobago international Brent Rahim has completed
his six-month loan switch to West Ham after being granted a work permit.
The midfielder, who is on the books of Bulgarian outfit Levski Sofia,
impressed Glenn Roeder sufficiently during a recent trial with the club to
prompt the Hammers boss to make a loan swoop for the star, with a view to a
permanent move.
The 25-year-old was originally forced to wait on a work permit but has now
been granted clearance to play for the Hammers and becomes Roeder's fifth
signing of the summer.
Roeder said: "He has been granted his work permit and it is now just a
case of his passport being stamped, which will let him get on with playing
for us to see how he does.
"He is a relatively young midfielder who has done enough in training
since he has been here with us to warrant giving him an opportunity until
the next transfer window.
"If he does well we will attempt to keep him, and if he doesn't come up
to what we want we will let him go back to his club in Bulgaria.
"But if he doesn't stay beyond the New Year I can guarantee it won't be
for the lack of trying."
He added on the club's website: "I haven't come across too many players
that work as hard in training and try and impress every single day."
Rahim spent a period on trial with the club last year along with countryman
Nigel Pierre after being recommended to Roeder by former Hammers goalkeeper
and international team-mate Shaka Hislop.
The midfielder impressed in a 4-0 win for the reserves over QPR but a deal
failed to materialise and the star was forced to return to Bulgaria.

18-Aug-2002 - Brent Rahim faces an anxious few days ahead to see if he will
be able to fulfil his dream of signing for West Ham - years after he spent
half a year with Monday night's opponents Newcastle.
Contrary to reports, the Trinidad and Tobago international has not signed
for the club - but hopes that work permit clearance will enable him to do so
soon.
The 24 year old midfielder reveals:
"I am not signed yet; it is a waiting game but I am hoping it will go
through in the middle of next week; I don't know exactly how many caps I
have got but I know it is the required 75%.
"I will have to hold back until it is all sorted but I am
hopeful."
It is his second attempt to make a go of it in England, and he adds:
"I was at Newcastle at the age of 17, when Kevin Keegan was in charge,
and there were some quality players up there like Les Ferdinand and David
Ginola.
"I was originally there for six months but they were pleased with my
attitude and ability so I stayed six months - but although they were
interested in me I couldn't get a work permit."
If he does sign it will have been a circuitous route to Upton Park via not
just the north east, but America and Bulgaria, where he is currently
contracted to Levski Sofia.
"It is definitely something I have always been working towards, and
that is why I resorted to going to Bulgaria - to get European experience.
"I had been playing for Los Angeles County but I wanted to get to
Europe.
"Although I didn't play in the Champions' League for Levski Sofia
because I arrived too late for registration, league football got me
accustomed to playing European football with good players.
"Different countries have different work permit requirements so I was
able to do so.
"Going there was a big culture shock but it got me acclimatised to
Europe - and there are some nice hotels in Sofia!
"I had some Brazilian friends and we used to go shopping, but there was
not much else to do.
"Now I am here Izzie, Jermain, and the others have been showing me
around, and I am getting used to it.
So why are the Bulgarians prepared to let him go?
"A new coach has come to the club and there would actually be no
fee," he explains.
"I had an up and down season last time but every coach has his own
ideas, and for me it was time to go for something more challenging."
Explaining his style of play, he says:
"I think I am a ball winner, and I work really hard to win balls and
then spread the play out."
Glenn Roeder is cautiously optimistic that he will be able to get his man
and adds:
"Brent has been with us for a couple of weeks, and we have just been
waiting for the 17th of August to arrive so that we can apply for his work
permit.
"We are confident that he can get it because he has played the full 75%
of internationals for Trinidad and Tobago.
"He has not signed, but I can't see why he won't get it - and then be
able to sign on loan from Levski Sofia until January, and if he has
progressed enough we will be able to keep him for the second half of the
season.
"While he has been with us I have seen an improvement in him and I
think that he is worth keeping at the club until the January window, and we
will see how much he has improved in the next three or four months.
"He has integrated into the squad well, and I spoke to Shaka Hislop
about him last year when his name was first brought up; Shaka was really
positive about him, saying he was a powerhouse in midfield.
"Who knows? He is 24 years old, with not a lot of experience, but he
has the motivation and who knows how much he can improve in the next three
or four months.
"If he does, he will be able to earn a longer contract at the football
club.
"It is a question of having strength in depth - and he is desperate to
succeed.
"If his motivation in training counts for anything then he will improve
sufficiently to earn a contract - but let's see how he does first, before we
pass judgment."
Hammers complete Brent Rahim swoop.
TEAMtalk News.
15-Aug-2002 - Glenn Roeder has confirmed that West Ham have signed Trinidad
& Tobago trialist Brent Rahim on loan until January, subject to a work
permit.
Rahim spent a period on trial with the club last year along with countryman
Nigel Pierre after being recommended to Roeder by former Hammers goalkeeper
and international team-mate Shaka Hislop.
The midfielder impressed in a 4-0 win for the reserves over QPR but a deal
failed to materialise and the star was forced to return to Bulgarian outfit
Levski Sofia.
However, with Roeder keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the forthcoming
campaign, the 24-year-old was invited back to east London and, after a
superb display in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Spurs, the boss has
moved to snap up the ace on loan.
Roeder told the Evening Standard: "He did enough for us to want to keep
him. He's a very positive lad, likes to get box to box and wants to
learn."
Rahim, who made his debut for Trinidad against Canada in January 2000, is
still awaiting a work permit but will become Roeder's fifth signing of the
summer if one is granted.
Brent Rahim tastes title success.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
28-May-2002 - Brent Rahim was in the midst of celebrations with his
teammates at Levski Sofia following their success in the Bulgarian Premier
Division last week.
Levski scored a 2-0 win over Lokomotiv to clinch their 23rd League title.
Rahim was not i the line-up but having played in some of the team's earlier
matches, he was also caught up in the celebrations in his first season
there. The local midfielder had been on trial at West Ham United earlier
this season and time will tell if he remains there or seeks a move
elsewhere.
Nigel Pierre hammers a double, Rahim gets full action.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
22-Mar-2002 - Trinidad and Tobago's national duo Nigel Pierre and Brent
Rahim improved their chances of contracts when they produced impressive
performances to guide West Ham United Reserves to a 5-0 whipping of Queen's
Park Rangers in a closed door encounter on Thursday.
Pierre made a big impression on manager Glenn Roeder by notching a double as
the "Hammers" dominated with goalkeeper and national captain Shaka
Hislop in goal and Rahim in action for the 90 minutes.
Richard Garcia also scored a double while Shaun Byrne netted the other.
Hislop told TTFF Media after the match that the display by Rahim and Pierre
was good enough to suggest that they were worthy of consideration.
"Nigel scored two goals and Brent did well in midfield for us. They
have done well in first team training sessions and it's good for them to be
able to brush shoulders with the likes of Paolo Di Canio. For me it's just
good to have these guys here as fellow Trinidadians at the club. I've been
able to build a really good relationship with both of them over the last
couple of years playing for the country and of course I wish all the best
for them," said Hislop.
"It seems that over the next four days we should have a better idea as
to whether the manager will be making any offers to them," added
Hislop.
Meanwhile, Stern John also relayed to TTFF Media that Rahim and Pierre had
been attracting a lot of interest since their arrival in England.
"Everybody's been talking about them here. It's been big news in the
national newspapers that the coach there is looking for more 'Trini' flavour
and this does well for all of us," said John. "They have gotten
the chance and have made the best of it so far. Now it's up to the selectors
and I for one will keep my fingers crossed," he added.
West Ham boss: Roeder wants a look at Brent Rahim.
By Ken Dyer
19-Mar-2002 - West Ham are to arrange a special match behind closed doors this
week in order to have a closer look at Trinidad & Tobago midfield player
Brent Rahim.
Manager Glenn Roeder has been impressed with Rahim, who has been on trial at
West Ham and said: 'He's shown us enough to make us want to have a look at him
in a match situation.'
Rahim, an international team-mate of West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, has
been playing for Levski Sofia in Bulgaria.
In Related News, Khris Raistrick reports that Trinidad and Tobago duo, Nigel
Pierre and Brent Rahim hope to prove on Thursday that they are worthy of
further interest from Glenn Roeder.
Brent, a 23 year old midfielder, and Nigel, a 22 year old striker, are both
mystified by reports of a friendly against their own country that day - but if
local opposition can't be found for the Hammers, a training ground match
behind closed doors will take place to test the two out. Brent is currently at
Levski Sofia in Bulgaria, and says:
"It is not the best league in the world but I wanted to go to Europe to
continue my footballing education and get experience I couldn't get in the
Caribbean.
"But now I want to see if I can make it here, and my trial is until the
end of the week. "It was a big sacrifice to go to Bulgaria, but, although
I had offers from America, I wanted to get a feel for Europe.
"It is difficult not speaking the language, and the food is different,
but it has toughened me up, and now I have one game to prove myself in."
Brent hopes to shortly reach the figure of 75% of games for his country that
should make getting a work permit a formality, but has had to miss out on
Champions' League action with Levski because he signed after the deadline.
He describes himself as "liking a tackle" and adds:
"I can play anywhere in midfield and I have had played in different
positions all my career; I have not established my most natural position yet
but I like going forward as well as getting back."
Meanwhile Nigel, who played for the reserves last week at Coventry, hopes to
make a move from his Joe Public in his native country, and says: "I have
been to West Ham before, last season, but got a heel injury.
"I played at Bristol Rovers for two months last year, then my work permit
was revoked - but I have enough caps now.
"If nothing works out here, I may have to drop down and perhaps go back
to Bristol, but we'll wait and see.
"Shaka Hislop has encouraged us and told us what a good club it is, and
that if we keep working hard hopefully we will get there."
He admits last week was not an ideal match to show his skills, saying:
"It was okay but as a team we didn't play too well and it was difficult
to impress." Both players do not think their likely transfer fees would
prove a stumbling block if Glenn does want to take his interest in the pair
further, and Nigel says: "I don't know what Joe Public want - but I don't
think it would be too much."
And Brent adds:
"I don't think it would be a lot - certainly affordable for a club like
West Ham."
Brent Rahim on trial at West Ham.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
13-Mar-2002 - Talented Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Brent Rahim is now on a
ten day trial at English Premiership club West HamUnited. And there along with
him is Joe Public striker Nigel Pierre who arrived at Upton Park for a similar
trial at the club.
The former St Anthony's College wizard has been invited by manager Glenn
Roeder who is now in search of a loanee midfielder and has indicated his
intentions of possibly signing Rahim at the end of the season. . No doubt,
national captain Shaka Hislop would have had good words to say about Rahim
even as he prepares for a move out of Upton Park by the end of this season.
The 23-year-old Rahim, who is still on contract with Bulgarian powerhouse
Levski Sofia, is expected to play for the West Ham reserves against Coventry
City (13-Mar-2002) alongside returning player Michael Carrick. So too is
Pierre, who has also been invited to for a trial at Norwegian club Moss FK for
later this month.
West Ham have in recent weeks lost the services of Michael Carrick, Steve
Lomas and Don Hutchison, as well injuries to John Moncur keeping him out, and
it has led to Roeder playing Trevor Sinclair in the middle with Joe Cole, or
pairing Cole with the even younger and inexperienced Richard Garcia.
Although the Hammers are hoping to have Carrick and Lomas back in contention
for a first team place as soon as the next match, the visit of Manchester
United to Upton Park, Roeder does not want to hang about, and has spent the
last fortnight or so scouring the Continent for adequate replacements, as the
Premiership season enters it's final phase.

Carnival celebrations before jetting off to El Salvador.
Brent Rahim helps Bulgarian side go tops.

06-Mar-2002 - National midfielder Brent Rahim produced an impressive and
workmanlike performance last week to help Levski Sofia to a 6-0 thrashing over
Rilski Sportist in the Bulgarian Professional League.
Rahim who has been made to work hard to earn selection, was in the starting
team and reportedly played a part in two of his team's goals.
The stylish former St Anthony's College player also had a good run in his
club's hardfought 2-2 draw with CSKA Sofia on Saturday. He replaced Bulgarian
Stanislav Angelov in the 52nd minute and had made an immediate impression as
as Levksi battled back from two goals down for a share of points through items
by Bulgarian international Georgi Ivanov (64th) and Georgi Chilikov (69th).
Levski are currently top of the table with 52 points from 21 matches, seven
points ahead of second placed CSKA Sofia. Rahim rejoined his club following

intruders in December.
