Newly-promoted Guaya United made the leap from third to second in the 13-team standings last evening, when the South-Eastern club handed league leader Club Sando its first defeat of the campaign, via a 3–1 triumph at the Guaya Recreation Ground, Guayaguayare, last evening.

After leading 1–0 at the half courtesy a Calvin Lopez strike halfway through the first period, Club Sando responded with a Devon Modeste goal just after the hour-mark.

Carlon Hughes then gave Guaya its second lead of the match in the 75th minute, before Jodi Allsop put the match to bed with the host team’s third item in added time. Based on past results, it was a poor defensive performance from Club Sando, which entered the match having conceded just seven goals in 11 previous matches.

Meanwhile, Guaya, which remains with a match in hand made the jump over Malabar FC, which was on a bye for the weekend.

The round of matches feature several other surprises, with the likes of Defence Force which was second from bottom before the start of the match droping 2011 treble winning club Joe Public 2–1. WASA FC, the defending champion, suffered yet another setback when it was held to a 1–1 draw by the league’s last placed team FC Santa Rosa. WASA, with the exception of a default win over Stokely Vale last month has failed to secure a victory for the season.

Westside Superstarz, which started the campaign well, and drifted off with poor results in recent weeks also failed to build on its momentum from last weekend’s win over Joe Public. Westside lost 3–2 at home to Siparia Spurs, which only had one win in 11 previous matches.
