WASA on top; Stern John scores first for season

Former Trinidad and Tobago national and Birmingham City (English Premier League) striker Stern John opened his account for the season when leading WASA to the top of the National Super League.

John, Trinidad and Tobago’s all-time record goal-scorer at international level, netted the third goal for WASA which scored a 4-0  win over Joe Public at the Marvin Lee Stadium on Wednesday.

They have now leap-frogged Petrotrin Palo Seco (11 points) by a point, after the previous leaders were held 2-2 by Bethel United of Tobago. John showed the experience of his days playing with Birmingham City, when despite the attention of an eager, young defender Kerron Reid, he flicked a cross low across the dive of Joe Public keeper Vaughn Charles to the far corner.

And at age 37, despite having seen it all during his ten years playing in England, John seemed no less thrilled at scoring.  Four victories in five matches puts WASA  atop the table with 12 points, followed by Petrotrin on 11 and last year’s runner-up Club Sando on ten points.

Club Sando recovered fom Sunday’s slender 1-0 defeat to WASA with an uncomfortable 4-2 away win over Real Maracas. Club Sando appeared to have matters well in hand when leading 3-0 through goals from Kern Cupid (43rd), Kerron Mitchell (58th), and Akeem Humphrey (65th).

But spured on by their fans, the home team rallied with goals from Shaquille Smith (77th) and Dillon Bartholomew (88th) to pull themselves back into the game to be down 3-2 at one point. It took  Andre Quashie’s injury time item to finally kill off Real Maracas.
