Police needed a 84th minute goal from prolific striker Neri Joseph to edge fifth placed Angostura 1976 Phoenix 2-1 and remain in touch with Sportworld National Super Football League leaders Superstar Rangers on Sunday.

Police went ahead in the seventh minute of the match, played at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago, as Phoenix were unlucky to concede an own goal.

Kevin Keith brought the hosts level on the stroke of half-time and the teams went into the interval tied at one a piece.

On the resumption both teams searched for the winner and in the 84th minute Joseph scored his third goal in two matches to hand Phoenix its third loss in six rounds of matches.

Police won by a similar margin to Rangers and both teams have similar records with Rangers ahead on goal difference, and it appears that if they continue in this vein, match day 11, the last day of matches in the first round, when the two teams meet ,will be the only time that either outfit will have the opportunity to separate from the rest of the pack.

Crab Connection, last year’s runner up, are three points ahead of defending champs Joe Public in second place after a hard-fought 3-2 win over Couva Players United at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

After a goal-less first-half Jason Marcano put mid-table Couva ahead 2-0 as he scored the game’s opening item in the 50th and added a 63rd minute item.

Six minutes later Brian Wallace scored to bring Crab within one goal of their opponents. In the 77th minute Rennie Britto drew them level. With two minutes of regulation time remaining in the match, one of 2005’s five “Players of the Year” Marlon Warner scored the deciding goal.
