FC Santa Rosa’s Big Cannons have regained the leading position in League one of the T&T Super League, a position they assumed after beating Queen’s Park CC 4-1 in a revised encounter at the Arima Velodrome on Sunday.

The win came courtesy double strikes by the prolific Rashad Griffith and Ryan Stewart. Trailing leaders Hydro Tech Guaya United by two points on 38, the Big Cannons received a major scare under rainy conditions when Jovan Marshall popped the Parkites into the lead in the 15th minute and defended it stoutly to the half. After the resumption however their resistance was broken when Ryan Stewart equalized in the 47th and triggered a barrage of attacks from the home team.

Griffith got his first goal in the 60th minute which handed the Big Cannons a 2-1 advantage, and with the home team heading for maximum points, Stewart and Griffith made sure by adding two more goals within the space of a minute. First Stewart got his team’s third goal in the 75th minute and with the visitors struggling to regroup, Griffith added another to confirm victory as well as their return to the top.

Keith Look Loy the Big Cannons coach said his team will not only be pursuing its second title, but a bit of history as being the only team to win back-to-back titles in the Super League. “In the 15 year running go the Super League, no team has ever won back to back titles and we want to be the first to achieve it, so we are motivated by this. We know the race for the title is not a long way off and Guaya will be our main opponent” Look Loy said. He noted his team is no stranger to this position, as they were in a similar position last year, a close race for the title and managed to pull away nearer the end.

Both the Big Cannons and Guaya have five more matches to go, including a mouth-watering clash with each other on November 5 at the Velodrome. Look Loy said in spite of this key game it is important that they win their other matches.

Ron La Forest, the Guaya coach said Look Loy cannot be a happy man right now, as his Big Cannons will have to pass through him first to be crowned champions a second time. Guaya who are on 40 points and trail their opponent by one point will also have to win their next four games in a title race that has been reduced to just two teams. After leading his troops to a convincing 5-2 triumph over Cunupia FC in the semi-finals of the League Cup on Saturday, La Forest said “Jump high, jump low, Look Loy will have to beat me first for that title, and I will be waiting impatiently for him.”

In another match on Sunday, Defence Force moved to third in the standings from a 2-2 tie with Club Sando Moruga at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. The Army moved to 30 points courtesy of goals from Jamal Goodridge in the 49th and Kevon Blackman in the 86th. Club Sando got their goals from Marcus John (34th) and Andy London in the 61st.
