28-Feb-2005 - Hard working central defender Derek Phillips has signed with Irish
club Shamrock Rovers in an un-disclosed deal. Derek is set to become the second
T&T player to mark his trade in Ireland. Avery John was also once based
there playing for top club Shelbourne, Bohemians and Longford Town before opting
to join MLS club the New England Revolution. Phillips who made his debut for
T&T against South Korea will be heading to Ireland soon to join up with his
new club for pre-season training in Spain. Derek was originally call into the T&T Digicel team but the
former Chesapeake Athletic Dragons defender was dropped mainly because he was
not yet back to full fitness after he suffered an injury while playing for
T&T in a friendly match away to Guatemala in August 2004. He did not have a
good showing when he played in T&T for the Digicel qualifiers so he has
decided to go abroad and play in his regular position with the hope that he can
convince the T&T Technical staff to give him a chance to play in the
midfield where he also loves to play. Hopefully, with
this latest move Derek may well get his chance to prove his worth for the T&T
team in the near future.
