Central FC teenaged striker Dwight Quintero was in an advantageous mood on Thursday night, scoring a beaver-trick as his side annihilated 9-man Super League outfit FC Santa Rosa 5-0 in the first round of the 2013 FA Trophy.
Central advances into the main draw—Round of 32—against UTT (University of Trinidad and Tobago) on Wednesday 22 November at a venue to be announced, but immediately shifts its focus to Saturday’s 2013 Toyota Classic quarter-final round clash against Defence Force from 8pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium.
“It’s always good to win, and to win comfortably,” said Central FC head coach Terry Fenwick. “(…) although there was disappointment with the sending off of (Santa Rosa attacker Antonio Auguste) within the first five minutes of the game. That clearly makes a big impact on the game.
“But we play Army on Saturday [in the Toyota Classic] and we’ve got some big performers in our team, and we are looking forward to big performances to advance further in that tournament as well.
“We’ve played them (Defence Force)a few times this season and we know what we are up against. They are coming into the game fresh and that’s something we’ve also got to look at.”
On the topic of big performers, the 19 year-old Quintero headed Central—last season’s defeated finalists—in front 1-0 in the 32nd minute by meeting a well-placed Johan Peltier cross to beat former Tobago United and North East Stars goalie, Andrew Durant, in goal for Santa Rosa.
And in the 37th minute Quintero lashed home a Marvin Oliver pass into Durant’s far netting for a 2-0 cushion to the recently crowned 2013 First Citizens Cup champions.
By then Santa Rosa, which lost attacker Antonio Auguste to a direct red card just two minutes into the match for offensive language, had no chance of rebounding.
“What the mother [colourful language],” lashed out Auguste, loudly, upon learning that he hadn’t won a penalty after going down inside the area on an Elton John tackle.
Referee Cecil Hinds showed no mercy to the enraged Auguste, rewarding him a direct red card.
“I wasn’t close to what happened, but I know it’s simply about the laws of the game to the referees,” said Fenwick. “…but they must know that the best referees in the game are the approachable ones – referees you can talk too. Referees today here in Trinidad are not people’s persons. They are unapproachable and sometimes it affects the negatively.”
As if things weren’t already bad for the visitors, Santa Rosa, that showed up with just one substitute, goalkeeper Kitwana Manning, at the New Settlement Ground, Chaguanas.
Central meanwhile, without Trinidad and Tobago internationals, goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams and striker Rundell Winchester, and looking towards Saturday’s fixture against Defence Force, shuffled their squad a bit.
However veteran midfielder Marvin Oliver, midfielder Darren Mitchell and forward Quintero were well beyond their opponents, while rookie goalkeeper Javon Sample had a quite night.
But it wasn’t the same for his opposite number, Durant.
Durant was beaten again in the 64th minute when Quintero picked up his third by blasting in a Mitchell pass from just inside the area for a 3-0 score.
Mitchell then buried one himself in the 76th minute, after picking up a Johan Peltier pass inside the area, for a 4-0 score.
Durant, who had his crossbar rocked in the 22nd minute by an Elton John strike, saw it shake again in the 68th minute from a blast by Central substitute Keon Trim, seconds after replacing Oliver.
Then in the 72nd minute Quintero hammered in his fourth and his team’s fifth overall item, 5-0 the score.
The talented forward was picked out by Marcano and his powerful strike hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced inside the goal.
However Quintero missed out on improving his personal best to five goals, by hitting the base of the upright from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute, after he was fouled inside the area by Akeen Lynch.
Lynch picked up his second yellow card of the match for the incident and Santa Rosa were reduced to nine men.
In the other FA Trophy Round One clash on Thursday, Coosal’s Las Lomas hosted UTT at the Madras Recreation Ground in Cunupia and fell to a 3-0 defeat.
Joseph Brown opened the scoring for UTT in the 6th minute, then Jamal Creighton doubled the advantage in the 22nd minute, all before former T&T youth player Garvin Samaroo sealed the 3-0 victory in the 79th minute.
