Soca Warriors advance

TRINIDAD and Tobago footballers advanced to the third round of the 2002 World Cup qualifying series with a comfortable 1-0 victory over the Dominican Republic in a return leg at the Institute Preparacion de Menores in San Cristobal yesterday.

The winner came off the boot of substitute striker Nigel Pierre in the 65th minute. Pierre replaced Mickey Trotman just before half time after the Joe Public striker tore a ligament.

T&T now face Haiti here on May 6.

Holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg at the Queen's Park Oval two weeks ago, T&T were expecting a tougher challenge but the Dominican Republic gave a laid back performance.

The winning goal followed a clearance from goalkeeper Ross Russell which was met by Arnold Dwarika who nodded the ball for Pierre to hit a low left-footer in the left corner of the net.

Pierre, currently awaiting a work permit appeal before returning to English Second Division side Bristol Rovers, was elated about his goal.

"It was a good goal for me personally. We were never under any real threat because they allowed us to play more of the football."

Scotland-born coach Ian Porterfield was pleased with the performance although he felt more scoring chances could have been created.

Starting line up: Ross Russell (goalkeeper, captain), Brent Sancho (Lyndon Andrews
75th), Shurland David, Marvin Andrews, Dennis Lawrence, Carlos Edwards, Stokely
Mason, Mickey Trotman (Nigel Pierre 44th), Arnold Dwarika, Sherwin Julien, Angus
Eve.
