ADELAIDE United will keep trialist Kevin Nelson for another week while continuing to spread a worldwide net for a new striker.

Nelson has been with the club for a week and, after finding his feet following a two-day flight from the Caribbean, is starting to show some touch.

On the day the Reds was announced as the club's new nickname, Kosmina said they will give Nelson the extra time to impress.

"He's a reasonable finisher and he gets on the end of things on the edge of the box," Kosmina said.

"But to make a good judgment call, to be fair on Kevin, we need to have little bit more of a look at him.

"He's a great bloke and we're going to give him a little more time."

Kosmina said Nelson was a "good physical specimen" and was happy with his fitness levels but reiterated that the club would not rush into a signing.

"We're still talking to overseas people and that is no disrespect to Kevin," Kosmina said.

"Transfer windows are closing in Britain in the next week and it is quite possible that might free some more people up."

Of more immediate concern for the Reds is the fitness of young striker Michael Matricciani whose knee injury continues to linger.

"In terms of what we can see visually and how he responds to the program he's on, he looks okay," Kosmina said yesterday.

"We want the surgeon to have another look to get a professional medical opinion and then take him on board from there.

"It could be that he could start full training by the end of September, so we're not that fussed about trying to rush things."

Should Matricciani return to full training it would be a boost to the player and the club with fears that he may have missed the entire season.

But if he is forced to sit out for longer, the club may have to seek a player for a short-term contract.

Kosmina will put the final touches to training at Hindmarsh Stadium today before the squad flies out for Newcastle this afternoon for the first match against the Jets tomorrow night.
