Fresh from a strong showing for the national team at the Concacaf Gold Cup, striker Cornell Glen is aiming to add some goals to his international club tally when he takes the field for Indian club Shillong.

Glen began training with his new club earlier this week after last playing for North East Stars.

“It’s going to be a challenge in terms of culture, it’s going to be a challenge in terms of the style of play,” Glen said in India. “My aim is to score as many goals as possible for the Reds, but the key would be to stay fit. I am really looking to have a great season with the team.”

Glen is remembered for his dazzling run when he took care of England defender Ashley Cole at the 2006 World Cup.

“It is a good story to tell. Everyone who has ever held a T&T passport wanted to be part of the World Cup. We were lucky to be the generation that did it.”

Despite being a footballing nomad, Glen does have the tiniest bit of knowledge with regards to Indian football’s direction of development. Being a West Indian and having followed the IPL (Indian Premier League) and its impact on cricketers, he shared his views on the tournament.

“You do not know what you have until you give it a try. No international footballer would ever want to play only two months of a season. That would be effectively finishing off his international chances.

“Maybe the idea makes sense financially. But if a player gets injured playing a smaller league, no established club is going to accept that,” he ended.

He is the third T&T player after Cyd Gray and Densill Theobald to play in the Indian league.
