Wanderers stars Jlloyd Samuel and Vladimir Weiss visited St Gregory's RC Primary School in Farnworth on Tuesday to take part in the Let's Get Cooking 'BIG Cookathon' event with children, parentsand members of the community.

20 schools in the North Westparticipated in the BIG Cookathon this year. The Let's Get Cooking BIG Cookathon at St Gregory's RC Primary School saw more than 230 people take part in the event throughout the day, during which they made healthy Italian food.

Jlloyd Samuel, who took part in the event, said: "It was absolutely brilliant to get involved with the pupils, parents and other members of the community in this year's BIG Cookathon. Let's Get Cooking is a great way for kids and parents to learn all the skills they need to cook fresh, healthy meals at home.

"I enjoy cooking - my wife and I share the duties at home. My favourite meals are chicken, lamb, steak and fish, which are all healthy dishes. But with my Trinidad roots, I enjoy eating traditional cuisine like curry goat and roti, which is similar to a nan bread."

Hundreds of Let's Get Cooking clubs participated in this year's BIG Cookathon across the country. In 2009, more than 24,000 people took part and this year the number will have risen to 30,000.

Caroline Grundy, who is the school's Let's Get Cooking Club Co-ordinator, said: "We were thrilled to have Jlloyd and Vladimir at the school to get cooking with the children during our BIG Cookathon activity. The Let's Get Cooking club is a regular after-school fixture for us here, and this annual event is a great opportunity to connect with the thousands of other Let's Get Cooking clubs all across the country."

Local clubs competed against more than 240 clubs, involving 30,000 participants nationwide, by preparing and cooking a healthy meal at the same time on the same day for their chance to win a share of the £3,000 prize. The regional winners will be announced shortly, followed by one school being crowned the national BIG Cookathon champion.

David Edwards, Director of Let's Get Cooking, said: "Our annual Cookathon competition really embraces the spirit of Let's Get Cooking, which is all about children and adults cooking together, and every year more and more people get involved."

Let's Get Cooking is a growing network of after school cooking clubs for children, their families and the wider community, supported by a £20 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

The clubs mainly take place outside of school hours, and complement the re-introduction of practical cooking onto the curriculum for secondary school pupils. They encourage children and young people to cook at home and eat a healthy balanced diet.
