FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas announced today the signing of Trinidad & Tobago 2006 World Cup starting goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. Hislop joins FC Dallas from English Premier League club West Ham United, with which he played 25 games during the recently completed 2005-2006 season including in the FA Cup Final in May, 2006.
"This is an exciting new challenge for me," said Hislop. "I went to school in the United States and have a lot of respect for soccer in the country. I look forward to bringing my experience to a great organization and help FC Dallas win championships in America."
Hislop has had a tremendous summer to date. In May, he led West Ham to the Football Association Cup (FA Cup) final against Liverpool. Having tied 3-3 in regulation, Liverpool pulled out the victory by a 3-1 margin in penalty kicks. A month later, Hislop was in goal for his country at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. On June 10, Hislop's made numerous game-saving stops to give Trinidad a historic shutout against a powerful Sweden side. Five days later, he started against England, keeping a clean sheet for 83 minutes before falling 2-0.
Hislop was born in London and moved to Trinidad with his family when he was two years old. From 1988-1992 he attended Howard University in Washington D.C., playing goalkeeper all four years for the Bisons. In his freshman year, Howard advanced to the NCAA Division 1 College Cup final, losing 1-0 to Indiana. He graduated in May 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
Having an English passport, Hislop was offered an opportunity to play professionally in England. After college, he was drafted by the Baltimore Blast, a professional indoor soccer team. In an exhibition game against Aston Villa in Birmingham, he was spotted by a scout from Reading FC. He signed and made his professional debut with Reading in the English Second Division against West Bromwich Albion on September 9, 1992 and helped the team get promoted to the First Division following the 1993-1994 season. In his third season, he led the club to a second place finish, narrowly missing out promotion to the English Premier League (EPL).
Following his success at Reading, he was transferred to Newcastle United of the EPL on August 10, 1995 for 1.575 million pounds, then an English record for a goalkeeper. He went on to play 126 games over three years with Newcastle and then signed with West Ham United for the 1998-1999 season. After four seasons with West Ham, Hislop was signed by Portsmouth of the First Division for the 2001-2002 season, where he was coached by current FC Dallas goalkeeping coach Alan Knight. Hislop helped the team gain promotion to the top flight after his first season, and kept the team in the Premiership for his next two campaigns.
After a trial at Crystal Palace, Hislop re-signed with West Ham - which had just been promoted to the Premier League - on July 29, 2005. He played 25 games for West Ham during the past season, including seven games during the run to the FA Cup final.
On the international front, Hislop made his first international appearance for England's U-21 team, playing against Switzerland in March 1998 as one of three overage players allotted to each team. He was also called in to an England 'B' game against Chile on February 10, 1998, though he did not see action. Having never played a FIFA sanctioned game for England, Hislop made his international debut with Trinidad & Tobago on March 28, 1999.
In April 2005, Hislop was recognized as the recipient of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) Special Merit Award for his continued involvement with the "Show Racism The Red Card" campaign, which he helped start in 1996 as a way to keep racism away from soccer.
Hislop, will occupy the teams fourth senior international slot will join the team pending visa approval once the International Transfer Window opens on July 15. His full name is Neil Shaka Hislop. He is married and the couple has four daughters.

Goog move.  He's now in the twilight of his career and will be considered a big name in the league.  I bet he's probably in the upper echelon of pay bracket.  They couldn't stop saying that de man was a Howard grad and final four participant twice.  Dallas is also a good area to springboard his coching career too. Texas youth soccer is one of the best in the in the country.

An interesting move indeed. MLS teams are dominated by US keepers so it is nice to see Shaka breaking the barriers. Actually, Dallas is the only team that currently has a non-US keeper on its roster!

Yes it is Engineering, Shaka is very intelligent and would do well whatever he chooses to do. I am glad he will be payed well in Dallas but this MLS is like a retirement league, ah hear Beckham coming over here too to set up a soccer school

Allyuh getting tie up oui.  Dallas means not just regular playing time, but more importantly a paycheck every month for the next couple years, AND a comfortable lifestyle for his family.

Shaka not dotish.  He knows his career is winding down, and wants to make the money as long as is possible.  Also, family-wise, it is a great move as he and his wife are very familiar with the US ad have loads of friends here.

So look at the big picture for once, fellas.  All is not football and quality of league, family is also important as is career longevity.

Great move Shaka.  Very smart.

The MLS is for men who cant make it in the EPL anymore, who here think Shaka cant make it in the EPL anymore??
From FA Cup Final, outstanding game(s) in the World Cup and your next move is the MLS!!!!
nah nah nah
I doubt the MLS could pay him more than he could make with a contract extension in England gettign paid on pounds.  And from what I hear he is very comfortable with his family life in England.

and not to mention I am very vexed that we dont have a frigging team here in Florida to allow me to see we boys play.

Allyuh aware Shaka have badges and workin on more?  The FA sponsors the courses for all registered players interested in taking them and he has been making use of this.  The States also expedites Green Card proceedings for pro athletes. Two words to sum up his motivation for the move  'Coach & Camps'  Shaka eh dotish, the States have real football money floatin around and while I'm sure he will try to have a tremedous time savin for Dallas, he looking toward the football after life right now and linin up he ducks.  He resume impressive enough at this point.

World Cup 'keeper Hislop joins FC Dallas
By Steve Hunt / MLSnet.com Staff

• FC Dallas press release >
FRISCO, Texas -- In a signing expected to be perhaps the crowning touch on making FC Dallas an MLS Cup contender, the club Wednesday announced the acquisition of Trinidad & Tobago goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. Hislop, who will likely join in the team in a few weeks, is expected to compete for the Hoops' No. 1 goalkeeper spot currently held by Dario Sala.

"As we all know, championship teams are built on two primary things: character and depth," said FC Dallas president and general manager Michael Hitchcock. "Today with the addition of Shaka Hislop, a world-class goalkeeper, we are complementing a great team that we feel will compete for championships. By adding depth at a key position, this is going to get us closer to becoming that championship team for our fans."

Hislop, 37, is most recently known for his outstanding performance between the posts for Trinidad & Tobago in the World Cup. Taking hold of the opportunity when starter Kelvin Jack was injured, Hislop started the first two matches for the Soca Warriors -- who provided one of the big stories of the cup in their scoreless draw with Sweden in the opening round. T&T allowed just four goals, although they were eliminated after the group stage.

"We started out at the beginning of this season and talked a lot about quality players," said FC Dallas head coach Colin Clarke. "Now we have the chance to add another great one to FC Dallas. The thing that Shaka brings to us is depth, experience and leadership. He's going to be out there fighting for a place with everybody else."

The 6-foot-4 Hislop also kept a clean sheet for the opening 83 minutes of Trinidad & Tobago's second match, which ended in a 2-0 loss to England. He was last with West Ham United of the English Premier League, helping lead them to last May's FA Cup Final against Liverpool. Hislop is clearly looking forward to his next challenge -- playing in MLS.

"I am very excited about joining FC Dallas at a time when they are leading the Western Conference," he said. "They are a very exciting club, a club with a fantastic roster that is surrounded by people with a tremendous soccer history. It's a new and exciting challenge and it comes at a great time in my career."

With Hislop's signing, the Hoops now have four 'keepers on their roster: Ray Burse, a third-round pick in the 2006 Super Draft who has played well for the FCD reserves, 11-year MLS veteran Jeff Cassar, who has been injured for most of the season and Sala, who has played all 16 games in goal and has two clean sheets while allowing only 1.35 goals per game.

Even with such an impressive soccer pedigree, Hislop knows he will have to work for playing time just like the rest of the FCD roster.

"I've never asked for guarantees or had to ask coaches or managers about their expectations of me," he said. "I am looking forward to competing for the starting job with Dario and Jeff, who are fantastic and accomplished goalkeepers in their own right. I'm sure that I can help bring the best out of them and they will certainly see the same from me."

His signing reunites him with Alan Knight, FCD's current goalkeeping coach and a longtime standout 'keeper in the EPL. Hislop worked with Knight for three seasons while with Portsmouth, the same team where Knight and Clarke were teammates.

"I'm looking forward to it (working with Knight again)," Hislop said. "I had three very successful years with Alan down at Portsmouth. Before we came together, I think in 10 previous seasons, Portsmouth finished above 13th once. Professionally, it was a very successful three years. Personally, I have a lot of respect for Alan."

Another major factor in his signing was the great leadership he will likely bring to the team.

"I come with a lot of experience and plan to share that," he said. "I think that (leadership) is one of my stronger points at this stage in my career. I'm a good leader and can direct on the pitch most importantly. These are the things that I'm sure Colin (Clarke) is looking for me to bring to the team. It's a strong roster and just needs a little push. I intend to bring that."

Clarke knows that adding Hislop to the roster instantly makes them a better team, which should pay dividends in the playoffs.

"When we knew he was available, we jumped at the chance to bring him here," Clarke said. "Last year in the playoffs, I thought our goalkeeping was lacking when we needed it most."

The FCD head coach also feels that Hislop's signing adds further depth to his already deep roster.

"We knew at the start of this season that we were going to need a very deep squad to get through this season and we're adding another quality player," Clarke said. "Our goalkeeper situation now becomes to me, one of the best in the league.

"I feel that with the 'keepers we have with this club that we have built a very strong club from the back to goalkeeper all the way through to a championship."

HISLOP LANDS LEADING ROLE IN DALLAS

Shaka Hislop will return to America to finish his career after signing for FC Dallas from West Ham.

The 37-year-old graduated from Howard University, Washington, in 1992 and played for Baltimore Blast before joining Reading and spending 14 years in English football.

Hislop recently starred for Trinidad and Tobago during a World Cup campaign which saw them have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages before defeat to Paraguay ended their hopes.

"This is an exciting new challenge for me," said Hislop, whose move is subject to visa approval.

"I went to school in the United States and have a lot of respect for soccer in the country. I look forward to bringing my experience to a great organisation and help FC Dallas win championships in America."

Hislop had two spells at West Ham and also played for Newcastle and Portsmouth.

Although he was expected to spend most of last season on the bench, injury to Roy Carroll meant Hislop helped the Hammers reach the FA Cup final, where they lost to Liverpool on penalties.

Meanwhile, Preston right-back Tyrone Mears is set to complete his move to Upton Park.

The 23-year-old travelled to London on Monday to agree personal terms and Preston have confirmed he was due at Upton Park today to undergo a medical.

The Hammers turned their attention to Mears after attempts to sign England full-back Luke Young from Charlton fell through over the weekend.

Preston revealed they had turned down two bids from Charlton before agreeing a fee with West Ham manager Alan Pardew.

Good Talk.

People here talking about money and football. This move is not really about either. It is about a man winding down his career at 37 and deciding that lifestyle is the most important factor.

Zidane is retiring from all football except fetematches after this world cup. He is only 34.

Get some prespective people.

I will travel to see him play and we will welcome him with big cheers!
I have been a Shaka "groupie" since St Marys and not ashamed to admit it. They didn't even make a Hislop T & T jersey for the World Cup! His wife made her own! I bet you Dallas will make me one?

he's 37 years old. Good for him that he found a starting job in a league that is no-pressure, and where his wife and family can be comfortable. Shaka has proved it all in england already. Look forward to seeing your matches on TV Shaka.

    VERY WELL SAID!!

Plenty ppl saying Shaka make ah bad move but I am sure Shaka gave it a lot of thought and he did what is the best for himself and his family.  Some of allyuh does come down on players like you are actually in their shoes and know 100% of the facts.  True I find it very strange he left the EPL to go the MLS but Shaka knows what's his goals are and me must respect his choice.  Generally speaking, there is much more to life than playing in the EPL especially when yuh is 37 yrs old.

Shaka knows exactly WHAT he's doing, why he's doing it, and all the critics out there need to understand that when a man makes a decision in life, he makes one that at that time he feels is best for him and/or his family.  I wouldn't be surprised if the man setting himself up to get his coaching career going after his playing days are done.

I was very disappointed at first then i realized that most great players like to end their career in the MLS and also the man is thirty seven Westham might of just give him a year but in Dallas he probably getting more also it closer to home!!!!!!!!!

An important bit you've overlooked there is the fact that the ex Pompey coach, Alan Knight is the goalkeeping coach at Dallas. Shaka and Knight (AKA the Legend :notworthy:) got on very well at Pompey during their time together so I'm sure a big part of this is Shaka helping out a mate.

I think Shaka could have had one last season in the premiership before going out to the retirement home that is MLS, but Alan Knight tried to play one season too many and it was a disaster. This I'm sure was explained to Shaka.

Anyway, what has he got to prove? he has been there, seen it, done it and got the Tee Shirt. Good luck to him.  :notworthy:

I am really disappointed with some of the comments on this. Trinis really are the kings of the market crab syndrome.

First of all think about it...what would you rather do? Sign a one-year contract to be 2nd or 3rd choice keeper at a team where the average age is under 25? Or sign up elsewhere where you are sure to get regular playing time, and make a serious contribution?

You guys are acting as though the EPL is the all in all of football. So what if he's leaving the EPL? Hasn't he been here long enough? It's been 14 years people! I am quite certain that he has gotten fed up of alot of things, which I won't go into.

Should he sign a one-year contract at West Ham, be the 3rd choice keeper, warm de bench, and then be left out in the cold when that yea is up, and be forced to retire from the game beacuse of a lack of options? Or worse yet, go down the league table to some Championship or League one side?

If you have to take a step down in order to keep on playing, better to do it somewhere else, that you're familiar with, like to be, have friends and family, and where you'll be treated like the star that you are. Better to be the big fish in a pond, than to be a small fish in a really big ocean.

And let's not forget the family factor. Shaka has four daughters. And many of you do not realise what a shyte system the education system is here in the UK. Yeah, it's great for degrees, but anything lower, it's rubbish. Especially for the black kids. Bullying and violence is a serious problem here. Whilst the same can be said for the states, I am sure these factors also played a part in the decision. Not to mention the earlier points about possibly starting his coaching career over there.

Allyuh thinking now for now. The man is looking into the long term. Like allyuh forget that football is a job, like any other, so you have to think about career progress, job enjoyment, and future earnings. Alot of people leave a big money job and take one that's a step down, but the perks and conditions make them happy. Why can't a footballer do the same?

I say well done Shaka. Leave on your terms, and don't allow anyone to force you to retire. :applause:

If Jack wasn't in such a big hurry to rush and sign for a club that have no respect for Sancho, Shaka coulda probly put a good word in for him and he coulda be second string at West Ham...

hahah..sarcasm no doubt. One game in the WC and you gone from an injury prone Scottish league benchwarmer to a Premiership player? doh work so, even if you believe he has the talent.
Great move by Shaka. At 37, he looking to play a little less, probably spend more time with the family, less press intrusion into your life...etc. MLS is not a shit league. It is a developing league with some decent teams. Even if you realy do think it is a shit league for outfield players, there really is no such thing as a shit league for goalkeepers. The ball is still round and a bullet is a bullet. You never watch MLS? Even if you doh like the quality of play, the keepers still have to put in an honest shift.

See what I said? Hear it from the horse's mouth:

Courtesy West Ham United Fan Club

Shaka Hislop has spoken exclusively to whufc.com after leaving the Club to start a new career in the USA with FC Dallas.

The popular goalkeeper made a point of contacting us in order to bid a personal farewell to West Ham United supporters, and admits that it was a huge wrench to bring down the curtain on a 14-year playing career in England - five of which were spent at Upton Park.

"I'm extremely sad to be leaving West Ham United," he says, "but at the same time I'm happy and content that it is the right time to leave and that I ended in a way that I could only have dreamed of.

"It makes me so proud to know that I finished my playing career in England with a Club that I love dearly and had such an amazing experience with the FA Cup final at the end of the season.

"I can honestly say that my last game in English football was without doubt the biggest highlight of my 14 years playing in this country. After the initial disappointment and heartbreak of how the game actually finished, I walked around the pitch in Cardiff and the image of the Hammers fans in those stands is a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I felt it was a fitting way to end my career.

"I've spent the last few days talking to the likes of Alan Pardew, Paul Aldridge and Ludek Miklosko, thanking them for the opportunity they gave me last year that enabled me to realise some of my dreams about English football and West Ham United in particular.

"I'll certainly take them up on their offer to come back and pay a visit in the not too distant future, and I'll look forward to meeting up with the many great friends I have made during my two spells with the Club. I'll never forget my time at West Ham."
Explaining the reasons behind his decision to embark on a new life in the US with his young family, Shaka admits that it had always been his ambition to move nearer to his Caribbean roots at the end of his playing career in England.

"The opportunity was presented to me during the summer, and the possibility of moving to the States is something that I've been thinking about and considering for some time now," he says. "My kids are getting to the age now where I want them to have stability in the next few years, and my wife and I decided that we both wanted to move closer to Trinidad, where our families still live.

"I've given it a lot of thought, but eventually decided that it would be the best thing to do for personal reasons. I always saw my future as taking this route, and a big part of my long-term ambition is to contribute in any way I can to Trinidad and Tobago - at the very least in a sporting sense.

"Being on the south coast of the USA means that I can get home very quickly whenever I need to and, after the experience I have just had at the World Cup finals, that has taken on even more of a significance. There is so much passion for the game in Trinidad and Tobago, which has just been amplified this summer, and I want to be closely involved with that.

"And from a football point of view, joining Dallas is a very exciting and interesting challenge, and one I am really looking forward to. I lived in the States for four years before I came to England and the MLS is a league that has grown and grown since then.

"I've signed an 18-month contract as they are in mid-season at the moment, but I am not really looking beyond that - it's just a case of settling in to our new surroundings and taking everything as it comes."

And finally, the man who gave nothing but loyal and dedicated service during five seasons and more than 150 appearances at Upton Park offered his own departing message to the fans who will no doubt be sad to see him go…

"I've been racking my brains thinking about what to say to the fans," he says. They've meant so much to me during my time at West Ham - in the four years I spent here originally and in the last 12 months - and I just want to thank them for the wonderful support they have always given me.

"I will look back on my last year in English football with a lot of fond memories - it really was something to be a part of - and I look forward to coming back to Upton Park in the not too distant future, to sit with the Hammers fans and cheer the team on."

I don't think the MLS is a shit League at all. As a matter of fact the League deserves more credit.
Crowd wise they pull more than the Dutch League, Austria and Belgium who league numbers are inflated only because of their truly big teams. It also has served the USA well and dear I say provides a working opportunity for many CONCACAF players including ours. My father always says make sure your house in order before yuh cry down someone elses. We calling their league shit, then what is ours? MLS is a young league and in many instances is compared to leagues that are over 70 years old.
I can tell you if you see FC Twente play WillemII, yuh face stretch from yawning. Many a night I have seen some very good games in MLS and yes poor games too. But I can say the same for the Premier watching the likes of West Brom and Sunderland.

From the club that has had Bryan Haynes and Mickey Trotman play for them, we're very happy to have Shaka playing with us.  The fact that Alan Knight also knows Shaka and has a good relationship with him makes it even better.  From all indications, Shaka is a true professional who will strengthen our goalkeeping position (traditionally a strong one in MLS and the US) and this is awesome.

As for where MLS stands in the world of football, no, it isn't the Prem or La Liga or Serie A or BL, but it has turned out some players who have made an impact on the World Cup stage, and is a growing league.  I hope any and all of you who can make it out to our stadium to see Shaka play for FC Dallas.  Having hosted some great national teams (Mexico, Ghana, US) for matches, and their response to it, Pizza Hut Park is something I think you will enjoy.

To my friends Mike and Andy that I met on the way to the World Cup - hello!
