West Indies have dropped allrounder Marlon Samuels and opener Kieran Powell from their squad for the second Test against New Zealand in Trinidad, and replaced them with uncapped batsman Jermaine Blackwood and Leon Johnson.

Blackwood, a 22-year old from Jamaica, has played 16 first-class matches and averages 40.38, with three hundreds and six half-centuries. He scored two centuries for the High Performance Team in recent matches against Bangladesh A. Blackwood also scored 94 and 118 in the final of the 2014 regional four-day competition against Windward Islands.

Johnson, 26, played three ODIs for West Indies in 2008, against Bermuda and Canada, but hasn't appeared in an international since then. The Guyana batsman scored three half-centuries in the two matches against Bangladesh A. Johnson averages 33 after playing 50 first-class games.

Samuels was dropped after he made a pair in West Indies' 186-run defeat in the first Test at Sabina Park. He was dismissed second ball both times, and has only three scores above 20 in his last 12 innings.

Powell made 28 and 0 in Jamaica, and has consistently failed to convert his starts for a while now. He passed 20 in eight of his last 15 innings but has a high score of 48 in that period.

The second Test against New Zealand begins at Queen's Park Oval on June 16.

Squad: Denesh Ramdin (capt), Chris Gayle, Kraigg Brathwaite, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Jermaine Blackwood, Leon Johnson, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kemar Roach, Jerome Taylor, Sulieman Benn, Shane Shillingford, Jason Holder, Shannon Gabriel.

Good to see Blackwood and Johnson getting a chance.....what's the point of doing well in the regional tournaments if it doesn't earn you a test call-up.
If left up to me Darren Bravo would get the axe as well; he's done nothing of note recently to justify his continued presence on the squad. He needs to be sent the message that you can't coast by on perceived potential and a sprinkling  of decent past exploits; he needs to step up now!

Dwayne Bravo misses out again
Published: guardian
Saturday, June 14, 2014

The West Indies cricket team, trailing 0–1 in the current Test series against New Zealand, will have to do without the services of allrounder Dwayne Bravo after he again damaged his hamstring and will be out for up to a month. Bravo was called up for a preparatory camp to prepare for the current series in Barbados. The right-hander took active part in the camp but was declared not fit enough to take on the rigours of a five-day Test match. He was expected to be in the fray for the second Test that begins on Monday at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain but re-injured his hamstring and will now not be available to make his much anticipated return to Test cricket.

Meanwhile, the West Indies team for the second Test flew into Trinidad last night and today, will begin preparations for the second Test. The Caribbean boys went under to the Kiwis by 186 runs in the opening match of the series at Sabina Park in Jamaica on Wednesday, the fourth day of the Test. Skipper Denesh Ramdin lost his opening Test as West Indies captain but will be looking forward to make amends in the second match, which will be played in front of his home crowd. Over the next few days the West Indies coaching staff is expected to do a lot of work with the batsmen, who failed miserably in the first Test. The West Indies tallied 262 in the first innings and 216 in the second. Things could have been far worse for them in the second innings were it not for a record last wicket stand of 82 between Shane Shillingford and Sulieman Benn.

New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum said he was expecting a backlash from the home team. “The West Indies are a very proud team and we expect them to come hard at us in Trinidad. They are not a team to roll over and we expect that they will be coming for us. There is not much we can do about that. All we have to do is to prepare well and stop focussing on the opposition. “I mean we have to focus on them in terms of their strength and weaknesses but at the same time we cannot forget our game. We need to keep fine tuning our game and take it from there. We have some very eager players with us and they want to do well badly and this has been working for us over the past year.”

Black Caps pondering over final XI

Sunday, June 15 2014
newsday

NEW ZEALAND are mulling over the Queen’s Park Oval pitch here as they contemplate their final XI for the Second Test against West Indies starting tomorrow.

The tourists fielded two seamers and two spinners in the First Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica last week, coming away with an emphatic 186-run victory inside four days.

However, coach Mike Hesson admits they are not too sure what to expect from the Queen’s Park Oval surface.

“I’ve heard contrasting views. Some have said it’s going to be a dustbowl and others have said they’re going to leave plenty of grass on it,” Hesson said.

“I’d expect something similar (to Kingston) but with (Kemar) Roach and (Jerome) Taylor they’ve got a couple of very good seamers so I thought they would have left a bit more life in it. For this Test they might see that as a different way to attack us.”

On a flat Sabina Park track, New Zealand were led by an eight-wicket haul from debutant off-spinner Mark Craig as he destroyed the Windies in both innings.

Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi grabbed three second innings wickets as West Indies, set 403 to win, tumbled to 216 all out.

If the pitch looks like it will favour seam, fast bowler Neil Wagner will be a serious consideration, with Sodhi sitting out, as Craig assumes the role of frontline spinner.

“With left-handers (Craig) is going to be our trump card. Ish didn’t bowl as well as he would have liked in the first innings but he bowled superbly in the second,” said Hesson. “They complemented each other really well and that’s what you need to win Tests away from home.”

‘Niggle’ could prompt bowling change for 2nd Test

West Indies find themselves in a familiar position heading into the second Test against New Zealand starting today at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain.
The hosts are one-down in the three-match series following a 186-run loss in four days at Sabina Park and West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin said they have learnt from their mistakes and will be coming harder at New Zealand to try and level the series.

“I think we tried (in the Jamaica Test)...They wore us down, they batted with a lot of patience,” said Ramdin, noting that the home team needed to take note of how the visitors batted and try to emulate them in Trinidad.
In the four days since the end of the first Test, Ramdin said they have been looking at some footage and talking about the opposition and how patient they were with bat and ball.
“We as batters need to spend more time at the crease and we need to do that in this game. We know they might come with a different attack but we are prepared for it,” the skipper added.

To try and turn their fortunes around, the West Indies have opted for a few changes to the squad, dropping out-of-form middle order batsman Marlon Samuels and opening batsman Kieran Powell and bringing in Jermaine Blackwood and Leon Johnson, who were both successful with the bat for the West Indies Sagicor High Performance Centre against Bangladesh A.

Yesterday, Ramdin said both replacements could be in line for a Test debut and that they might even have to tweak their bowling

Johnson ‘elated’ with WI call-up

Guyanese middle order batsman Leon Johnson is  ‘very happy and elated’ to be called up to the West Indies team for the second Test against New Zealand starting tomorrow at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Johnson, from Kumauni Creek in the Demerara River, opener Kraigg Brathwaite and middle order bat Jermain Blackwood were three changes made to the Windies squad after the team lost the first Test by 186 runs at Sabina Park last week.
“I just want to continue scoring runs as I have been doing and make meaningful contributions in whichever way I can to the team” Johnson told the Kaieteur News shortly before leaving for Trinidad and Tobago.

The talented player who also bowls useful spin made his first-class debut for Guyana against the Leewards at Enmore in 2004 when he was just 16.
Johnson has two hundreds and 19 fifties from 50 first-class matches and has been consistent this season for Guyana when he registered his maiden first-class to for his country in Antigua against the Leeward Islands in April.

“I think the main reason for my recent success is due to me maturing not only as a player but a person as well, so that has enabled me to understand the game and my own game better,” explained Johnson.

Inshan Ali: "To the West Indies Board of Control, are you for real? Why isn't Sunil Narine in the team for the second match? Maybe the cricket board for the West Indies can tell me why. If they are basing their reason that Sunil Narine did not report on June 1st, and decided to play in the final IPL game which his team won, they, the selectors of the West Team need to be fired.

Reason: Brendon McCullum played the match two days earlier for Chennai. Had Chennai won that match, he would have played the final match on June 1st against Narine's team. I doubt strongly that the New Zealand selectors would have dropped him because he is the captain. "

Jordanious77: "The BIG difference between McCullum and Narine is McCullum was told he could play the IPL finals. Whereas I'm guessing Narine was told to leave his IPL side and join the WI team and he made his decision clear. I guarentee that if McCullum was asked to join up with NZ early he would have. McCullum would put his country first, and Narine didn't. That is the main point of difference here. If McCullum had been asked to come back early and he didn't, i'm 100% sure NZ would have dropped him for the tests as well. Narine lacked respect for the team and ALL team managements have to stand up to players not putting their team first in order to create a winning culture."

New Zealand have lost their last nine wickets for 101 runs. What a comeback from the home bowlers, and that amid their fielders missing so many opportunities. Most of the New Zealand batsman contributing to their dismissals, including the solid Tom Latham, who made his third successive fifty. The pitch had eased out after the first hour, but New Zealand have ceded the advantage Latham had built up for them. There is still some help out there, and West Indies are faced with just under half an hour of batting

Ten wickets going down in two sessions. New Zealand squandering a superb start before they pulled one back late in the day with the wicket of Gayle. The ball is still new and it will be a testing first hour for the hosts on day two. Will also be interesting to see how the two NZ spinners go, with Benn finding plenty of bounce and some turn on occasion.

Windies bowlers restrict Black Caps

Had the West Indies fielders been World Cup footballers, they would have been hauled off the field for missing six chances against New Zealand yesterday. But the opposition did not make them pay. A three-wicket burst by Jerome Taylor after tea, and better catching saw to that, as the Black Caps were curtailed for 221 on the opening day of the second Test.

And perhaps the tone for this match was set when in the seven overs West Indies batted before the close, late swing by Trent Boult plucked out Chris Gayle’s off-stump, leaving nightwatchman Sulieman Benn to go to the close with Kraigg Brathwaite at six for one.
Taylor’s perfect length in a five-over spell (5-0-19-3) rescued a day at the Queen’s Park Oval that was going to pieces for Denesh Ramdin and his men before the break. But Taylor removed Jimmy Neesham, BJ Watling and Ish Sodhi to seize the advantage for the Windies, after Benn had made the initial breakthrough, winning an lbw decision via the Decision Review System (DRS) against visiting captain Brendon McCullum.

Giant left-arm spinner Benn (28.4-6-73-3) and Shannon Gabriel (12-2-43-2), playing his first Test at home—replacing the injured Shane Shilingford—chipped in with four wickets between them as New Zealand collapsed. They lost seven wickets for 62 runs.
Benn, victim of four of the six missed opportunities, was eventually rewarded for utilising his height and the bounce the pitch offered him; while Taylor (17-5-34-4) who also removed opener Hamish Rutherford (in for Peter Fulton) in the first session, kept his length just full enough — especially in that post tea session — to entice his victims into giving catches.
New Zealand’s rapid decline in the afternoon left WI skipper Denesh Ramdin with a smile on his face. That smile was not there however in the last over to tea, when in the closing minutes of the session, debutant Jermaine Blackwood missed Ross Taylor (45 not out) at backward point, and in the last over,  Ramdin himself and solitary slip Chris Gayle allowed a Taylor edge to sail between them, and Kirk Edwards grassed a one-handed effort very close in on the on-side, next ball, the last of the session.

Those were three escapes for Taylor with just 17 to his name. He would get a fourth later before Benn ended the innings with the wicket of Trent Boult.
“What happened was that we created the chances and once that was happening we knew we could do it again,” an unperturbed Taylor said of those second session mishaps.
He certainly kept his cool to deliver in a way the West Indies have missed too often in his absence of nearly five years.
The let-offs, while not reflecting well on the choice of shot by the batsmen, was also an indication that the bowlers could get more joy from this surface than they did in Jamaica. So while perfect foil Benn and quicks Taylor, Gabriel and Kemar Roach would have been pleased to keep the total below 250 after opener Tom Latham (82, 229 minutes, 10 fours) and Kane Williamson (42, 153 minutes, five fours) had posted 105 for the second wicket.
The Windies only removed Rutherford in the first session, but might have done better had they collectively made the batsmen play at more balls after McCullum had won the toss and decided to bat first again.

Latham and Williamson put on 105 for the second wicket after left-hander Rutherford followed a ball he could have left and gave Gayle the first of his three catches in the innings.
Latham, with his third consecutive half-century of the series was threatening to hold up the Windies even further. But a tumbling low catch by Benn in the gully ended his resistance after lunch at 146 for three. Big Benn did not miss his targets on this day.

Don: "I think today has been a reality check for Mark Craig and the NZ team. Debut 8 wickets, playing at the international level must have seemed so easy just the match before. However, at this level if you aren't right at the top of your game every ball, every session you'll find yourself in trouble very quickly. Although when a team is going through a successful patch its good for them to find themselves on the back foot every now and again, just as a reminder that at this level you can never take it easy. David Leggat: Taylor haunts Black Caps yet again

12:11 PM Tuesday Jun 17,

The last time New Zealand clapped eyes on Jerome Taylor he was belting them about Dunedin's University Oval en route to a maiden test century.

That was late in 2008 when, batting at No 8, his run-a-ball 106, as part of a 153-run stand with Shiv Chanderpaul, helped pull the West Indies from a dicey situation and ensure a draw.

Now, after a four and a half year absence from the international stage, Taylor's class has added fresh penetration to the West Indies attack.

His four for 34 spearheaded their running through New Zealand for 221 on the first day of the second test at Port-of-Spain today.

That comes after an impressive display of control in unhelpful conditions in the first test loss in Jamaica. Taylor's 37-16-65-4 for the match brought back control so badly missing from the seamers during their tour to New Zealand last summer.

Jimmy Neesham, BJ Watling and Ish Sodhi were whisked out in similar fashion, edging catches behind the wicket when pushing away from the body at deliveries swinging away in the space of 16 balls. Suddenly 192 for four became 199 for seven and the shape of the game had changed significantly.

Taylor's most celebrated performance was ripping England out for 51 on his home ground at Sabina Park in early 2009. Taylor's five for 11 - Strauss, Cook, Pietersen, Collingwood and Prior, no mean haul - set up an innings and 23-run win.

Nine months later he was gone, bedevilled by injury, and that seemed his lot. For a long time it appeared to have brought a premature end on a burgeoning career, which began 11 years ago.

Instead Taylor is back, still just 29, and setting high standards for the West Indian seamers.

As for New Zealand, Hamish Rutherford fared no better than Peter Fulton at the top of the order, 22 balls over three before an edge to slip, and had Ross Taylor not been badly missed in consecutive balls on 13 and 17, 221 would have been substantially trimmed.

Trent Boult's peach to remove Chris Gayle before stumps slightly redressed things. But New Zealand have plenty to do in the coming days to keep their nose in front in the series.

Bravo, Brathwaite grateful for help

When Kraigg Brathwaite reached his first Test century and Darren Bravo his first in the Caribbean and on home soil, they were not thinking of themselves only.

Bravo ran towards where his parents sat in the stands and also dedicated his 109 to the Special Olympics athletes of Trinidad and Tobago. He also took the time to thank brother Dwayne for the chat they had before the match, and mentor Brian Lara.
“Brian is my role model,” Bravo said after scoring his sixth Test century.

“When he scored his first hundred (in T&T), I was right up in the members stand looking on, so I knew that whenever I got the opportunity, I wanted to go out there and actually make a hundred on my home ground. It was my first hundred in the Caribbean, so it was a special one, knowing I made it in front of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”

Bravo also spoke about timely advice from the former West Indies ace batsman Lara before the match. “He just told me that I should concentrate as much as possible. He has been looking at me for quite some time and he believes that my concentration tends to lack a little bit. He told me that whenever I get past 30, my average tends to be in the high 70s, so what he was trying to say, whenever you get a start it’s very important that you carry on, so I listened to him. It was a great feeling and I would like to thank him very, very much.”

Brathwaite, 21, made the most of his recall to the Test side for this match with his 129, spread over six hours. And when he got the single that took him to three figures, there was one he remembered instantly.
“I thought about my father,“ said Brathwaite, to whom he dedicated the knock. The opener also mentioned the work he did recently with “positive person” Sir Viv Richards at the Sagicor High Performance Centre, which has helped with his new approach to batting.

He was also grateful to Bravo with whom he put on 182, a record for the fourth wicket against New Zealand. “Obviously he’s a good player. He was talking to me a lot, telling me to play straight and it worked out for both of us,” he said.

And Bravo also was full of praise for his batting partner.
“I must say very well done to Kraigg. That was a fantastic innings. He eased the pressure on me the way he batted. He’s very disciplined, so I was happy to bat with him, I’m happy that myself and Kraigg were able to put the team in the driving seat.”

Oval distraction

A day at the cricket has been a less frequent experience for me this season; and not by design. But for this West Indies versus New Zealand Test match, I am determined to make up for lost time; even if that means taking my eyes off the World Cup for a couple hours. World Cup fever though is like dust; it gets into everything, including the Queen’s Park Oval.

Monday, 11.30am,
Gerry Gomez Media centre
“Portugal is a football team?” West Indies Cricket Board media officer Adriel “Woody” Richard is asking, challenge ripe in his tone. The first match for Woody’s beloved Germans and the Portuguese is less than half hour away, but he is in a belligerent mood. He gets some support. “Portugal is something to eat!” chimes in the local cricket board’s media man Zaid Mohammed.
That is what Woody is expecting his Germans will do in a few minutes. The football talk is livening up the room in a way the cricket is not doing. Guardian reporter Venode Mamchan is offering to bring coffee to various people. He’s sure they will need it as New Zealand proceed calmly to lunch, only one wicket down for 86.

The Oval pitch may have a tinge of encouraging green, but there seemed to be no special challenge for the batsmen. West Indies, playing Shannon Gabriel for the injured Shane Shillingford, did not make Tim Latham, Hamish Rutherford and Kane Williamson play at the ball often enough, not in areas that would get them out. Lunch score not encouraging: 81-1

2.45pm
The Germans feasted on their Portugal, 4-0. Woody can’t stop talking about it. But the West Indies players could not be as content having their tea right now. They got two more wickets in the second session. But they should have had more. The Windies missed about five chances after lunch, four of them going to hand.

Dangerous Ross Taylor tried his best to get out. He cut straight to new boy Jermaine Blackwood. Ball went through him. Bowler Sulieman Benn was not pleased.
Taylor then gave catching practice to Denesh Ramdin and Chris Gayle. He put the ball between them and they watched it and each other as it went for four. Why only one slip for your fast bowler at this stage?
And just to test whether this was one of those days when he could do anything and get away with hit, Ross struck the same bowler Jerome Taylor up the on-side of the pitch, only for the man placed close-in there, Kirk Edwards to put down the catch.
With that they all went to tea. How different 159 for three would have been but for all that! Big Benn only had one wicket up to that time, but he had applied enough pressure to have taken about three.

Three is what he eventually ended up with though. The last session turned the day around. Taylor stepped it up, bowling consistently on a full length, the fielders started holding catches again and the wickets began tumbling down.
West Indies have so missed Taylor’s skill with the ball and awareness of what is required in a given situation. Hope he can stay fit. Taylor and Benn put WI back in the match with New Zealand all out for 221. Good comeback. But will those missed chances still turn out to be a factor later on?

5.20pm
End of play near; end of Gayle already. Big man looked very uncertain at the crease, and did not cover his off-stump for the one that Trent Boult bowled him with. Benn replaced him for night watchman work. Wish they would stop with that. Let the specialists go and bat. This will be an early wicket in the morning.

Tuesday, 10.30am
Took the bowlers four-and-a-half overs to get rid of Benn. It was a bit much to expect he would last too long against the still new ball. Kirk Edwards now gets the chance to earn his pay.

Lunch, noon
Good morning’s play. Entertaining. Surprising really.
Didn’t expect that West Indian batsmen, so lacking in runs lately, to have played so positively. Give Edwards credit. He didn’t let rookie off-spinner Mark Craig settle. Played sweetly through the covers and thumped him for a couple sixes too. Jimmy Neesham also got slapped around too in his 55.
The big surprise was that Kraigg Brathwaite took his cue. He shed his default slow mode and attacked Craig, even when New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum packed the avenue through midwicket for the off-spinner.
Even when Edwards went, Darren Bravo got 10 runs off his first three balls. It was good cricket, the batsmen attacking and the fielding side staying on the attack, close fielders flocking around the batsmen like corbeaux circling for food.

Gus Logie, West Indies hero and coach of not so long ago was there taking it all in. Not too many others were there with him, such are the times, so different to when he played Tests here. Didn’t miss the World Cup this morning. Hope the rest of this match is as much of a distraction.

McCullum and Latham will open the batting. Rutherford had not taken the field this morning with an upset stomach, and he cannot bat till the New Zealand innings is 164 minutes old, we are informed on air. Or he can come in at No 7, if New Zealand lose five wickets before that time elapses. Latham to take strike. Taylor from round the stumps, an angle that bothered Latham in the first innings

James: "Nasty little session coming up for New Zealand. 6 overs or so from Roach and Taylor. Little to gain and a lot to lose."

Cricket: Black Caps trail by 166

10:00 AM Thursday Jun 19, 2014

New Zealand battled back strongly after conceding a first innings lead of 239 in the second test against the West Indies today, reaching 73-1 in its second innings at close on the third day at the Queen's Park Oval.

No. 3 Kane Williamson hit an unbeaten 38 and shared a determined, unbroken second wicket stand of 64 with opener Tom Latham, who struck 30 not out.Pacer Jerome Taylor removed stand-in opener Brendon McCullum, the Kiwi skipper, and finished with 1-15.

The West Indies, replying to New Zealand's first innings of 221, had earlier stretched its overnight 310-5 to 460 all out half hour before tea.

Newcomer Jermaine Blackwood hit a forthright 63 off 110 balls with six fours and two sixes.

He shared stands of 47 with veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul and 76 with captain Denesh Ramdin to help ram home the advantage the hosts had built on day two.

Chanderpaul struck five fours and a six in 47 while Ramdin hit four boundaries in 32 off 67 balls.

New Zealand removed nightwatchman Kemar Roach (6) and Chanderpaul in the morning session. Roach chipped Trent Boult to short midwicket at 333-6 while Chanderpaul was given out lbw playing no stroke to a big-spinning leg break from Ish Sodhi - after a TV review - at 380-7.

But Blackwood and Ramdin consolidated the Caribbean's side advantage after the break with an enterprising half century stand.

The tourists eventually wrapped up the innings with three wickets for the cost of four runs.Blackwood edged to Ross Taylor at first slip off Sodhi while Ramdin picked out the same fielder, who dived to his right to haul in a brilliant catch to give seamer Jimmy Neesham his first scalp.

Sodhi ended the West Indies' resistance when Jerome Taylor (4) holed out to long-off.

The leg-spinner earned career-best figures of 4-96 while left-arm seamer Boult took 3-75.

New Zealand, forced to open with captain McCullum instead of the ill Hamish Rutherford, survived unscathed to tea.

But Taylor struck early in the final session when he gained an lbw verdict against McCullum (3), who failed as he tried to overturn the decision on TV review.

But Latham, with three successive half centuries behind him, and the equally assured Williamson blunted the home team over the next two hours, ten minutes with few alarms.

The pair, which has already shared two century stands in this series, chose defense as their main method. Williamson blossomed at times and counted five fours off 118 balls, while Latham struck four boundaries off 122 deliveries.

ICC MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dubai, 19 June 2014

Tim Southee fined for breaching ICC Code of Conduct

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has been fined for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Code for Players and Support Personnel during second day’s play in the second Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain.

Southee was fined 30 per cent of his match fee by Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, after he pleaded guilty to breaching Article 2.1.8, that relates to ‘conduct contrary to the spirit of the game’.

The incident related to Southee’s confrontation with West Indies batsman Kirk Edwards around the 31st over of the West Indies’ first innings, which required the intervention of the on-field umpires.

Commenting on his decision, Mr Broad said: “Southee’s behavior towards Edwards was unacceptable and contrary to the spirit of the game. He disregarded the on-field umpires’ previous warnings and continued to engage with Edwards, which required the intervention of the umpires in the middle of the pitch.

David Leggat: Pressure on young batsmen to save test

12:51 PM Thursday Jun 19, 2014Add a comment

Tom Latham hasn't put a foot wrong as a test opener; Kane Williamson's resolute qualities are not in doubt.

The two young men shape as key to New Zealand's prospects of surviving the second test against the West Indies.

When they resume the fourth day early tomorrow at 73 for one, New Zealand will be trailing the hosts by 166 runs, with their captain, Brendon McCullum already dismissed and a question mark over the health of opener Hamish Rutherford.

A far cry indeed from the first test in Jamaica, won so handsomely by 186 runs.

In fact the West Indies have got themselves into a formidable position in similar fashion to New Zealand in Jamaica, dismissing the opposition cheaply in their first innings, piling on a strong first innings of their own - in which two batsmen, Kraigg Brathwaite and Darren Bravo (for New Zealand read Williamson and Jimmy Neesham) made centuries and Jermaine Blackwood added a lively half century on debut.

The task is tall for New Zealand.

Still Latham, with scores of 83, 73 and 82 in the series, and Williamson, who hit his sixth test hundred in Jamaica and has now eased his average up to 37.12, are well capable of hunkering down. Latham is just 20 runs short of becoming the eighth Black Cap to score four successive half-centuries.

Rutherford's illness did raise one interesting point, though.

McCullum, a former test opener, whose days going in first appeared to be over after the tour to South Africa at the start of last year, stepped up to fill the temporary vacancy.

This is the man who scored New Zealand's first triple test hundred four innings ago, has averaged 49.9 since the start of England's visit early last year and who, you'd have thought, should have been best employed in his usual position.

Clearly pushing wicketkeeper BJ Watling up to the top, after hours in the field, was not on, but this was a case where perhaps Williamson and the following batsmen should simply have moved up a spot.

Consider Williamson has been a de facto opener all last summer as Peter Fulton and Hamish Rutherford battled dreadful batting yips. Since putting on 95 against the West Indies in Dunedin in the first test of the home summer, that pair have average 14 for the first wicket.

Would Williamson have been significantly handicapped by having to walk out for the first ball with Latham? Don't think so.

Instead McCullum, first test failures notwithstanding, was removed from a position in which he must feel a high degree of comfort.

McCullum's 302 at Wellington against India was a monumental demontration of defiance and concentration. New Zealand will need those qualities in abundance over the next two days.

Instead the player who has proven he can do it most recently, has been removed from the equation for a short term fix.

10.05am Finally we have the groundsmen out. They are scraping off pieces of that loose surface. The hosts won't like this delay. Should have been taken care of before the start of play

10.04am Nobody has come out yet to do something about this. It's just the batsmen and the umpires scratching and gardening in the offensive area

10.02am Oh hold on. There is a delay. The pitch around the foot marks, right at the crease, is coming off, as if damaged. This will need repairing. It is peeling off. Not sure why this has come to the notice of everybody at the time of the start of the day's play
No crowd despite this being holiday to watch the home side push for a win. Kane Williamson and Tom Latham walk out to resume the hard work from yesterday. How are West Indies going to go about this? Spin is the first option. The new ball is 39 overs away

9.55am "The cracks have opened but very very little," says Jeff Dujon of the pitch. "It remains a pitch that is good for batting. The bowlers will really have to toil."
Five minutes to go to the start of day four

9.45am The skies are clear blue right now, and we are on for an on-time start

10.10am More testing going on. Wonder how the batsmen in the shed feel about this? Wonder who is happier with this delay? Ten minutes lost say New Zealand, but uneven surface to stand on says West Indies
We are ready to go again

10.07am Seven minutes lost already. The batsmen are testing out the area now. Umpire Rod Tucker has just used the hammer to see how solid the surface is

12.02pm A very good session for West Indies comes to an end. It is not just the result - three big wickets - but the effort they have put in and the discipline they have observed. This is a flat pitch, and needs all the hard work. West Indies have shown that all. Benn has removed left-hand batsmen Latham and Neesham - the latter with a stunning return catch - and Roach has accounted for Williamson. West Indies must be scenting the win now, but there is still some way to go.

5.32 pm West Indies have toiled very very hard all day. They are on the verge of a big win but they have been stretched to the limit by the ninth wicket pair of BJ Watling and Mark Craig. The two came together 27.3 overs ago when an innings loss was almost written on the cards. But they batted and batted and batted. New Zealand are only 18 runs ahead and do not have much of a chance with two wickets in hand. Keep an eye skywards as there is a some rain in the air. It is not likely to threaten the game though. David Leggat: Please Lord, give us rain

10:54 AM Friday Jun 20, 2014

That New Zealand took the second test into the final day is hugely to the credit of BJ Watling and tyro Mark Craig.

Their unbroken 45-run stand ensured that New Zealand can have a prayer meeting overnight - "Please Lord, the locals need some rain" - otherwise, barring a truly remarkable rearguard action, the teams will go to Barbados with all to play for.

Watling, who has so often been a rock in the middle to latter stages of New Zealand innings of late, has battled through 61 overs for his 38; Craig has done sterling work over 102 balls for his 29.

Since his first innings duck at Wellington against India in February, Watling has scored 124, 89, 22 not out, 0 and 38 not out.

That pair have avoided an innings defeat, and would be entitled to cast a sideways glance at some of their team mates' batting efforts today.

Tom Latham got a cracking ball from Sulieman Benn, who spat up at him, but Ross Taylor and Ish Sodhi attempted forcing shots outside off stump they didn't need to play, while Tim Southee's 15 off 12 balls and subsequent loose shot were hardly what was called for.

Along the way Jimmy Neesham fell to a superb return catch by big Benn, low to his right, and Hamish Rutherford made a judgment error, shouldering arms to a right armer coming around the wicket to be lbw.

Had Rutherford, produced a decent score he could have ended the debate over which two out-of-sorts openers, Peter Fulton or himself, should get a second opportunity in the third test alongside Latham.

So in pockets there was fight, but not enough, and not consistently enough.
The West Indies bowlers are far removed from the largely sorry lot who toured New Zealand last summer.

Jerome Taylor and Kemar Roach have added punch while Benn, an average performer in New Zealand five and a half years ago, has done admirably.

Assuming they wrap up the victory tomorrow - which would be only their second in the last 14 years at Queen's Park - who will take the momentum to Kensington Oval in Barbados? The home side you would imagine.

Therein lies the rub for New Zealand, who took a grip on the series in Jamaica but have been second best throughout the first four days.

New West Indies batsman Jermaine Blackwood says that the key to his successful entry into Test cricket was playing his natural game.

Blackwood scored 63 off 103 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes, as he helped the West Indies to reach 460 all out in reply to New Zealand’s 221 all out. Batting a second time the New Zealanders reached 73 for one at the close of the third day.

Blackwood speaking to reporters at the close of play said: “When I went out there I was a bit nervous for the first over but after that I settled down and played my natural game and this really helped me.

“Having Shivnarine Chanderpaul out there was also a big help as he was coming up to me and telling me to play my natural game and just settle down.”

Blackwood said he enjoyed his time out in the middle and around the West Indies players.

“Being around some really good players is tremendous. Having to play my first match with guys like Chris (Gayle) and Shiv is tremendous and they have been good to me and this is helping me as I go about this first match.”

The Jamaican added that his stint at the Sagicor High Performance Centre (HPC) in Barbados has really helped his game.

“The HPC has really helped me with my game. I was allowed to concentrate on my cricket while there and bat many more balls. I was able to leave a lot of balls and take my time a bit.”

Blackwood, who up until three weeks ago did not even have a First Class century, now has three and a Test fifty. He said batting longer was the key.

“Batting more balls is what got me to triple figures in the games before the Test and even this 63 I got here is because I was able to play balls on their merit. I am not going to change my game much, if a ball is there to be hit, I am going to hit it and this should lead to success.”

Its now lunch ...

Taylor to Craig, no run, length delivery on off, Craig waits on the back foot and defends it to cover

Taylor to Craig, FOUR, this is horrible! dropped by third slip - Big Benny. Taylor gets this one jag away a touch, gets the outside edge which flies at a comfortable height to third slip.. It just bursts through his fingers.

Taylor to Craig, FOUR, edge and dropped by Gayle! This is incroyable! This one should have been easier - maybe for Ramdin, definitely for Gayle.. Through the cordon and four

1.12 pm Bad news for West Indies, the covers are coming back on. It has started drizzling again.

1.05 pm The covers are coming off now. We will have restart soon. mikesiva: "I'm a bit concerned about the QPO outfield. That part of Port-of-Spain is built on land that used to be mangroves, so, when it rains, there's really nowhere for the water to run off to. As a result, it settles in the outfield."

12.55 pm The sun is out as we head into the fourth innings but it will be a while before we get going; the covers are soaking wet. West Indies don't need any more of these breaks. Just 93. They do get tricky these ones sometimes though. In another news, Rod Tucker has been replaced by Illingworth as he is not well.

jack: "Gayle should not open, instead should come in at 4 or 5, and then blast away if required. If he opens and fails yet again as he normally does, it affects the morale of the team....Good luck WI...you have earned this victory when it comes...best wishes from Toronto"

Superb innings from BJ Watling, playing more than 200 deliveries. It might still not be enough to save the Test for New Zealand, but Watling is putting together a series of fighting innings just when his team needs it.

12.15 pm Covers are coming on as it begins to rain at the Queen's Park Oval.
Raff: "Craig top-scored for NZ with 67. How frequently does a batsman batting at 10 or lower top-score for his team? Can't imagine it's all that frequent -- especially now that Phantom is not playing test cricket. "

Olly B: "To paraphrase the great Bolly Birmingham "those little Kiwis will be praying for it to rain and rain hard""

victor: "Can someone loan me a couple of TVs? There's two Test matches and a World Cup to watch." I'm keeping an eye on three TVs here.

I glad the NZ strech them to the max. Doh give them no easy win. the 99run partnership for the last wicket was prob. the best thing.  The WI must develop some fortitude. CONGRATS to them though. Thanks NZ for making the game exciting. Show them how to fight for it.

Cricket: Gayle powers West Indies to win

6:22 AM Saturday Jun 21, 2014

Left-hander Chris Gayle hit six sixes in a whirlwind 80 off 46 balls today to power the West Indies to a 10-wicket victory over New Zealand midway through the fifth and final day of the second cricket test.

Gayle added seven fours as the hosts raced to a victory target of 93 without loss in just 13.2 overs at Queen's Park Oval, finishing on 95-0.

Man of the match Kraigg Brathwaite followed his first innings 129 with 14 not out.

The three-match series is now level at 1-1 with the final test in Bridgetown, Barbados, starting on Thursday.

After dismissing New Zealand for 331 in its second innings, a rain delay of an hour jangled West Indian nerves but the sun emerged and Gayle quickly erased any doubts with a typically power-packed innings.

The 34-year-old opener was particularly severe on left-arm seamer Trent Boult, who disappeared for three sixes overhead in his third over.

Gayle brought up the equal second fastest 50 by a West Indian when he smacked his 28th delivery for his fourth six, and he continued to plunder all the tourists' bowlers.

Victory was completed when Gayle cracked his seventh four through the covers off Kane Williamson's part-time off-spin.

Earlier, New Zealand carried its overnight 257-8 to 331 before being bowled out on the stroke of lunch.

Wicketkeeper B.J. Watling ended 66 not out after a marathon which spanned 6 1/2 hours and occupied 216 balls.

Left-handed tailender Mark Craig struck nine fours in a top score of 67, his maiden test half century.

Watling stretched his defiant overnight partnership with Craig to 99, a ninth wicket record for New Zealand against the Caribbean side as well as at this venue. Kemar Roach eventually made the vital breakthrough and led the West Indian bowlers with 4-74.

Shannon Gabriel took the final wicket and finished with 2-66. Fellow seamer Jerome Taylor took 2-73 and left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn claimed 2-78.

The West Indies only had themselves to blame as Craig rode his luck early in the day.

He was dropped by Sulieman Benn and Gayle off successive balls from Taylor. Benn grassed a very sharp chance at third slip while Gayle was late to move to a first slip chance that wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin could easily have gone for.

Craig, in his second test, brought up 50 off 126 balls with seven fours. Watling followed soon afterward, having faced 164 balls with three boundaries.

The resistance finally ended when Roach induced Craig to edge a drive through to Ramdin.

Last man Trent Boult (8) hung around for 40 minutes before Gabriel also claimed an edge to Ramdin as he tried to evade a short ball.

"I thought we were pretty good for most of the Test match but that first innings, getting out for 220-odd was not good," says Brendon McCullum. "West indies deserved to win. We were 160 for 3 and we were in a very good position then, we could have gone on to record 400, but there were no partnerships. Credit to West Indies for coming back after we had them back for the first two sessions of the Test. We will cop that on the chin, we were second best, but we need to make sure we come back strongly in the next Test."

"It was a fantastic win. The conditions were tough for the bowlers," says Denesh Ramdin. "The pitch was placid, it was one in which you had to keep working well. Sulieman Benn put on a marathon spell. We were a bit lazy in the field. We hope we don't take it lightly against the lower order next time. Hopefully we can get a good pitch in Barbados, where batsmen can score runs and fast bowlers can take wickets.

" Kragg Brathwaite is the Man of the Match for his maiden Test century. He says, "I was looking forward to it (to the hundred). I have been doing a lot of work, especially against spin. I put in a lot of hard work, stayed positive and it worked well. It was not easy (staying away from the team)."

McCullum: WI deserved to win

The New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum believes the West Indies deserved their hard-fought ten-wicket win yesterday but promises his side will bounce back stronger for the deciding Test in Barbados next week.

Speaking to the media following the game at Queen’s Park Oval, yesterday, McCullum said it was good to see the West Indies fight their way back into the series especially on the first day of the second Test when New Zealand were in a decent position after two sessions of play.
“West Indies deserved to win. We were 160 for three and we were in a very good position then but credit to West Indies for coming back after the first two sessions of the Test,” said McCullum.

Meanwhile, West Indies skipper Denesh Ramdin was all smiles after his first Test victory in charge of the regional side and it was even more special for the wicket-keeper to get success in front of his home crowd. “It was a fantastic victory in the end. It was a hard-fought win,” he said.

Ramdin had called for more patience heading into the contest and was happy with the way his players responded and he believes that it made a difference in the end.
“I think we bowled the right areas and we were a lot more patient in this game. They were 80 odd for one wicket on the first day and we pulled in back by Tea time and then having lost the toss and to bowl them out, any captain will take that in a day’s play,” he said.
“The conditions were tough for the bowlers but our bowlers put in a lot of effort and our batters did the job in the first innings was good to set up the match. Coming out of Jamaica we needed to attack the bowlers more and be confident and play our natural game,” Ramdin explained.

However, Ramdin insisted that the home team still have some work to do ahead of the final match of the three-Test series and they struggled to dismiss the Kiwis in the second innings, allowing a 99-run eighth-wicket partnership to stretch the game into the final day. “It was frustrating having that lower order come and put on a partnership. They gave us some chances but we did not take them. And at the end of the day I think we were lackadaisical in the field and we were not hungry for that last couple of wickets there,” said Ramdin.

“We came back this morning (yesterday) with a lazy attitude and that could have haunted us but we came out on the better end in this match. It is very important that we stay patient, stay humble and hungry for success when we head to Barbados,” he added.
