Morgan, Brewer shine Schools All Stars Basketball

Division MVP Hakeem Morgan of East Mucurapo and International School of Port-of-Spain (ISPS) stand-out Remy Brewer led the T&T Schools’ Basketball Association’s (TTSBA) North Zone All Star Under-17 team to a 55-52 win over East Zone Under-20 champions, St Joseph Secondary, last week in an exhibition match closing the North Zone season.

Morgan, who was largely responsible for East Mucurapo’s capture of yet another Under-17 North Zone league title earlier this month, top scored for the North Zone All Stars with 17 points. Brewer, one of few players to play in all three divisions this season, and who was named MVP for the U-15 and U-20 divisions after guiding helping ISPS the double, contributed with 12 points for the North Zone All Stars. On the opposite end, St Joseph brothers Ahkeel Boyd and Ahkeem Boyd, scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Shakiel Bertram added seven.

The All Star team from the North Zone comprised players from five schools who stood out during the league campaign. East Mucurapo was represented by four players: Morgan, Josiah Best, Tehrek Scott and Isaiah Francis, while ISPS fielded three players in Brewer, Sekou Folie and Ephrain Archer. The other players selected were, Malcolm Douglas and Kobee James (QRC), Israel Daniel (Belmont Boys), Ezekiel Humphrey (South East Port-of-Spain) and Rafer Richardson (Success Laventille Secondary).

Following the conclusion, the respective MVPS and winning schools were awarded medals and trophies for their efforts.

North out plays South All Stars 100-89

Dextroy Manswell and Adrian Joseph did everything they could to upset the party, but even their combined 77-point tally could not prevent their 100-89 loss their South Zone All Stars team suffered at the hands of a North Zone Men’s First Division All Star team at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo on Sunday.

Despite playing for Police, which campaigns in the North Zone, centre Manswell and point-guard Joseph played for the South team during Sunday’s contest.

Three matches were played comprising the best players from the School Basketball Association’s North Zone Under-20 league, the U-16 league, the Women’s Division and the Men’s First Division. They played against an East Zone Under-20 All Star team, San Fernando Secondary for the Under-16 All Star Match and a South Zone Men’s All Star team respectively.

In addition to the matches, dozens of players participated in a three-point shoot-out contest and a slam dunk contest.

On Sunday, the All Star weekend lit up when the best from the North Zone combined against those from the South Zone. Although the North Zone’s All Star team was led in terms of scoring by Akil Paynter and Saiki Guerra, who scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, they still managed a relatively comfortable and an evidently economical win against the South Zone team, which had Manswell and Joseph running riot over the court. Joseph was later named MVP of the match. The dunk-out competition among the men was won by Patrick Scipio, while Jamile King won the three-point shoot-out.

A day prior, the Women’s Division All Stars from the North Zone were divided into two teams. In the end, the ‘A’ team, led by senior national women’s team player, Kielle Connelly, scored a 41-23 win. Connelly scored ten points and was subsequently named the MVP, while Crystal Ann George, winner of the three-point shoot-out, supported with six points. Iyanna Hughes and Alicia Cumberbatch were the top players for the ‘B’ team, scoring nine and six points, respectively.

UTT & Army fight back in Big 4 series

The University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT) and Defence Force (Army) men's basketball team bounced back from their opening game loss to even the series -1-1 in the Semi-Finals of the North Zonal Basketball Commission Big Four tournament on Sunday at the Eastern Indoor Complex, Tacarigua.

In the opening encounter against Shak Attack, UTT led by Captain Patrick Scipio with 21pts rallied back from a 30-41 deficit at the end of the first half. Facing elimination, head coach Lenny Guy applied a full court press from the opening minutes of the third quarter as UTT controlled the tempo for a well deserved victory, 87-74.

For the winners, Scipio was ably supported by Jeffery Harris with 18pts while Ernesto Romain chipped in with 13pts. For Shak Attack, power forward Andrew Ifill scored a game high 26pts and Kurt "Koto" Christian had 15pts.

In the second game of the double header, national standout Steven "Lighter" Lewis with 24pts guided Army to a comfortable 94-77 win over Police. Lewis ended the game with 24pts for the winners. From the tip off, Army controlled the battle and ended the first half ahead, 48-35.

For the winners center Kevian Bacquain, who missed the opening game of the best of three series, supported Lewis with 20pts while point guard Derrick Boxhill added 12pts. For Police, center Dextroy Manswell top scored with 16pts, Fabrice Fisher had 14 and Ronel Winter got 12pts in a losing effort.

Meanwhile, the deciding game of both series will be played on Sunday 26th July at the Jean Pierre Complex, Port of Spain. The winners of both series will clash for the championships while the losers will compete for the third and fourth places respectively.

Police start bpTT Mayaro basketball title defence in style

A member of the Police Service team tries for the basket in the Premier Division match with La Horquetta Forces at the opening of the 2015 bpTT Mayaro Basketball League on Sunday. Police won 84-75.

Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), the reigning North Zone champions, have started the defence of their Premier Division title in style as they won their opening game of the 2015 bpTT Mayaro Basketball League when the season was launched at the Mayaro Indoor Sport Facility on Sunday.

In the second of two competitive matches, Police demonstrated that they would be keeping a tight grip on the trophy when they turned back a determined La Horquetta Forces team 84-75, with Dexter Manswell contributing 18 points. La Horquetta’s Jeffrey Borne was top-scorer in the match with 36 points.

In the first game, Maloney Pacers triumphed over Mayaro Pacers 70-59 in an Under-23 fixture. Mayaro led in the first quarter but Maloney went ahead in the second and maintained their lead to the very end with Mohammed Elias scoring a three-pointer right at the buzzer.

The season got off to a colourful start with the parade of teams. Not surprisingly, Police captured the March Past title, with Newlands Knicks placing second, while High Voltage (Arima) and Maloney Pacers tied for third.

Now in its third year, the Mayaro Basketball League is organised by the South Corner Basketball Foundation and sponsored by energy company BP Trinidad and Tobago.

Joel Primus, Community Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations Adviser, bpTT, urged the players to take the sport seriously since they can take it to the highest international level as a profession. “Sport, in this case basketball, can be considered recreation, an avenue to alleviate crime, a means of bringing communities closer together but it can also be converted into a career. How far you take it depends on your discipline, attitude and passion. You should aspire to be basketball stars on the national and international stage,” Primus told the players.

He said that bpTT, whose home community is Mayaro, would continue to partner with the South Corner Basketball Foundation to develop the sport in the south-eastern communities.

Kyron James, councillor for Mayaro/Guayaguayare, praised bpTT for its “sterling and longstanding contribution in supporting sports in the region over the years. He appealed to the players to be competitive but display the highest standards of sportsmanship.

Twenty-four teams will compete in the 2015 bpTT Mayaro Basketball League. They will play in four divisions, Premier, Under-23, Women and Community League. Matches continue at the Mayaro Indoor Sports Facility on Saturday from 6 pm.

Games for the Mayaro Basketball league will start on August 19th with community division games being scheduled during the week and the other three divisions for weekends. Some of teams that are not too far from Mayaro may be scheduled for games during the week sparingly.

Teams confirmed for the divisions

Petro Stars guard Adrian Joseph dribbles down the court as centre Miguel Williams of Detour Shak Attack runs in to defend during the HOS Events Two-Day Basketball Extravaganza fiinal at the Southern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Pleasantville, San Fernando on the weekend. Petro Stars won 85-59.

There are now calls for another basketball contest similar to the HOS Events Two-Day Basketball Extravaganza held at the Southern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Pleasantville, San Fernando on the weekend.

Eight teams including Defence Force, Petro Stars, Petro Jazz, Detour Shak Attack, BTU Ballers, Quarters and the University of T&T (UTT) which had two teams, took part in the tournament for a whopping $25,000 first prize that the Petro Stars won eventually. But the prize was just part of the excitement in a shortened version of the sport. Organiser Musa Rahaman said he got the concept from the now popular Twenty20 (T20) cricket game.

“I have seen a number of T20 matches at the Oval and I decided to implement it in the sport of basketball which I enjoy playing, and it was exciting,” Rahaman said. At the tournament, matches were played in 16 minutes (8 minutes per half) and there were a number of additional events such as a slam dunk contest, three-point shoot out and a slam dunk contest for children under the age of 10.

Rahaman said he would satisfy the desire of the teams and the basketball fraternity by hosting a March Madness basketball extravaganza and he was hoping to get either 12 or 16 teams. He said the winning team would walk away with a whopping $100,000 cash award once sponsorships are forthcoming.

He is calling on corporate T&T and government to come on board and showcase the best basketballers in the country in true NBA style.

He wants the competition to be a fixture on the NBFTT calendar in the future. At this weekend’s tourney there was instant replays and NBA style racks.

Petro Stars defeated Detour Shak Attack 85-59 in the final, which was a full 40-minute game, for the $25,000 winners’ cheque courtesy Hideout Construction Services. Shak Attack received $5,000. Meanwhile Keon Joseph of Defence Force claimed the Slam Dunk contest and $5,000 from Flavorite. Orlando Mapp of Shak Attack walked away with Venture Credit Union’s $5,000 for the Three-Point shoot out.

There were also $200 vouchers given out by Keith Khan Book Sellers to youngsters under the age of 10 for a slam dunk competition as well as entertainment from international slam dunk expert Guy Dupuy of France and Porter Mayberry—the world shortest dunker.

According to Rahaman, the tournament was made possible from a number of businessmen who, like him, would come out and take a basketball “sweat” in the evening after work. He pointed out that their only problem to date, was receiving sanction from the National Basketball Federation of T&T (NBFTT) since they only have a few days before the actual start.

He noted that for the March Madness contest his organisation has already submitted a request for sanctioning and they are still awaiting a response. Anyone wishing to contribute or take part in the event can contact Rahaman at 657-8000.

Is there a sport run in T&T without confusion?

National basketball tourney will go on says vice president

Brian Lewis, president of the TT Olympic Committee, Darryl Smith, minister of sports, Garvin Warrick, president of the T&T basketball Federation and Glyne Clarke, president of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation CBC, are engaged in a conversation at the opening of the 2015 National Basketball Championship at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Despite calls by clubs, coaches and other stakeholders to postpone the National Basketball Championships, vice president of organisation and development of the NBFTT, Barry Stewart, is adamant that the tournament will proceed as planned.

The event opened on Saturday at the Jean Pierre Complex but two of the four teams scheduled to play, BTU Ballers and Petro Jazz, failed to show for the 5 pm bounce off.

In the second game, Detour Shak Attack beat Valencia Heat 68-64. Minister of Sports, Darryl Smith, who was expected to give the feature address, failed to do so, in spite of his presence.

Smith was joined by president of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC), Glyne Clarke, and president of the T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC) Brian Lewis, who was also expected to address the gathering but who also did not.

The tournament continued last night with a clash between the Ministry of Sports Schoolaz and Valencia Heat from 6.30 pm at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua and NBFTT officials were expected to distribute fixtures for the tournament to participating clubs.

Asked why the first match was not played, Stewart said BTU Ballers did not have sufficient uniforms for players as their manager had only recently returned from abroad. He said this was communicated to NBFTT officials, but the information did not reach him in time.

Stewart said be believed that some clubs were deliberately creating confusion by expressing unwarranted concerns that contradicted key decisions made by the board.

In clarifying this statement, he explained that the Championship was a fixed tourney on the basketball calendar which should have been held some three months ago.  “The only real concern for the Championship coming off was the prize structure which stated that the winning prize would have been $10, 000,” Stewart said.

“Even I didn’t agree with that but that was sorted out as the prize money was increased to $25, 000 but yet they want us to postpone it again.”

He said it was also difficult to get two other teams to play the opening game because of the limited time available.

Stewart also took offence to a newspaper report by a group of concerned coaches calling for the postponement of all basketball related tournaments until a proper assessment, planning and organisation element was implemented.

It stated also that following a meeting on last Wednesday, club officials Kern George and Melissa Guerero called on the NBFTT for an open-forum type general meeting to be held among all stakeholders to chart a way forward and develop a calendar of events for 2016.

Stewart cleared the air, saying Wednesday’s session was not a meeting but rather a discussion to find out the possibility of holding a youth and women’s tournament as part of the national championship.

Police stay perfect; Jazz hold off Valencia

DESPITE showing signs of rustiness after a long layoff, Police made their title ambitions absolutely clear when they returned to action in the National Basketball Federation’s (NBFTT ) club championships on Sunday, beating Ministry of Sport Schoolaz by 13 points at the Jean Pierre Complex.

The victory was the lawmen’s fourth win from as many outings, keeping them third in the points table and maintaining their status as one of two unbeaten teams.

Other winners on the evening were Petro Jazz, who edged Valencia Heat in a thriller and BTU Ballers, who defeated Upstate in a bottom-of-the-table battle.

Police were playing for the first time since the Christmas holidays, and it showed as Schoolaz kept it close in the first two periods. The Ministry of Sport team actually led 16-12 after the opening quarter, before Police edged ahead 31- 29 at the half. The officers then led by nine points after three quarters before closing off 75-62 winners.

Wesley Vincent led Police with 23 points; Dane Daniel had 14, Kenrick Bernard got 11 and Don Wilkinson had 12. Dale Copeland once more led Schoolaz, tallying 17 points; Kiev Chessney had 15, Keya Blackett got 11 and Triston Benjamin weighed in with 10.

Police thus remained joint second in the standings with Petro Jazz on eight points from four games.

The Jazz came within two points of losing to Valencia having led for three quarters of the contest.

The southerners led 20-15 after one and seemed to be cruising as they extended their advantage at the half to 38-22; and after three quarters, Petro Jazz had taken their lead to a commanding 29 points (63-34).

But in a fantastic display of determination, Valencia Heat outscored their opponents 38-11 in the final stanza, only to lose by a bucket, as the final buzzer sounded with Petro Jazz holding on, 74- 72.

Ako Pascall and Kevin Sarjeant both scored 22 for the Jazz, while Michael Pantin had 11. Valencia’s challenge was spearheaded by a game-high 28 points from Michael Saunders; Kyeon Joseph got 15, Randy Greenidge 14 and Kevin Greene had 10.

Earlier, BTU Ballers defeated Upstate in a see-saw affair — a result that left Upstate still seeking their first win after five outings.

Upstate led 17-15 after one, but BTU were ahead 32-25 at the half, and they continued to lead 48-42 after three quarters before going on to win 66-58.

Walter Peters led BTU with 27 points; Kevin Flemming had 14 and Jerome Joseph, 10. Marvin Allan carried Upstate with 15 while Keron Davis had 10 and Kofi Campbell, 8.

Upstate remain the cellar- placed team on four points, one less than BTU. Detour Shak Attack maintain pole position in the nine-team table with nine points from five games, followed by Petro Jazz and Police on eight each; Schoolaz are fourth on eight points, but their six games played are the most by any team thus far.

Warwick quits as basketball president

RACHAEL KING

Two years into his leadership of the National Basketball Federation of T&T (NBFTT), president Garvin Warwick has stepped down from the post. Warwick submitted his resignation letter on Monday with immediate effect, citing that personal reasons forced him to leave prematurely.

“Generally due to work and family commitments I did not have the time to give my 100 percent towards the sport,” Warwick said yesterday.

“But still we at the board were able to accomplish a lot. We launched a mini basketball programme in partnership with NGC’s (National Gas Company) Right On Track programme that were rolled out in all communities and signed an MOU with UTT to develop a School of Basketball.”

However, he did admit that it was not smooth sailing all the way through but said that the many issues were not the reason why he left.

“Over the last two years we (NBFTT) continuously faced uphill battles starting within our own boardroom. There are a lot of changes that need to be made by the executive of the NBFTT starting with the constitution in order for this organisation to move forward. I don’t have the time to commit fully to the task.”

In his resignation letter, Warwick listed what he referred to as milestones that the NBFTT had accomplished under his watch. It said: “Got seven of the nine zones active after a three year inactive period, lectured 122 coaches in 2014 at Level I, launched four out of five school zones, both male and female as well as under-15, U-17 and U-20 age-groups, completed two years of audits (12-13); (13-14)and this current one (14-15) financial statement is completed.”

Three VPs also resigned

Warwick’s exit makes it four persons overall who have left the executive sooner than expected.

The others are former vice-presidents Daron Lall (technical and training services), Chezette Baillie (communications and marketing), Alexis Browne (organisation and development).

However, Lall’s departure totally contrasts that of Warwick’s as part of his reason for leaving dealt heavily with the mismanagement by the federation under the former president’s watch.

Lall said that the board had strayed from what was promised when they were elected at the annual general meeting (AGM) and he felt the constitution was disregarded.

“The constitution was being used conveniently,” said Lall yesterday. “The president and secretary had openly stated that they purposely withheld information from me. Information which I would have needed to operate as the vice-president of technical and training.”
Another reason for him vacating his post was the board’s failure to deal efficiently with disciplinary problems.
“The inability of the Federation to deal with internal disciplinary issues, including a matter where I brought myself, along with the general secretary and president before the board, has not been dealt with to date.” His exclusion from a number of meetings and being given late notice of meetings on numerous occasions which were primarily held in Port-of-Spain, an issue he brought to the board’s attention continuously as he is based in South, prompted Lall to take such actions.
“I had been excluded from selected elected officers meetings and most of the ones that I had been invited to only give 24 hours or less notice. Due to my location and work obligations that was not enough time to make the necessary arrangements. “Some of the decisions made by the NBFTT, in my humble opinion may seem right to some but the proper process was not being followed, compounded by the lack of transparency.”
He said it affected his ability to perform his duties as vice-president so he officially tender his resignation in December.
“I wish basketball nothing but success, may the sport grow and may the individuals who manage the sport also grow,” said Lall.

Mitchell to act as NBFTT president

CLAIRE MITCHELL will serve as acting president of the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT ).

Mitchell, who is also the NBFTT secretary general, will sit on the hot seat after the resignation of Garvin Warwick - who is currently the advisor to the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Darryl Smith.

Warwick’s resignation was accepted at the NBFTT statutory board meeting on Saturday last.

According to a media release, “this was the Board’s first opportunity to meet since Warwick tendered his resignation on January 25 2016.” Similar to Warwick, Daron Lall stepped down as vice president (technical and training services) and, as a result, Arnold Thomas will temporarily serve as that role, as well as his current position as assistant secretary. “The Board of Directors wishes to thank all parties who continue to support basketball in Trinidad and Tobago as we restructure and improve opportunities for the sport to flourish,” the media release ended.

Mayaro Basketball League opens

Detour Shak Attack displayed consummate all-round skill when they started their defence of the bpTT Mayaro Basketball League Premier Division title in convincing fashion at the launch of the 2016 season at the Mayaro Indoor Sport Facility on Sunday.

Shak Attack sounded a warning that they would be keeping a tight hold on the premiership trophy when they turned back a determined La Horquetta Forces outfit, 78-64.

In the first game of an entertaining double-header, Maloney SOS Basketball Academy ran past Rio Claro Villers 71-51 in the under-19 division.

The 2016 season got off to a colourful start with a parade of participating teams. So far, a total of 19 teams are registered for this year's edition of the league, competing in three divisions— premier, under-19 and community.

Now in its fourth year, the Mayaro Basketball League is organised by the South Corner Basketball Foundation (SCBF) and sponsored by BP Trinidad and Tobago.

BPTT community liaison officer, Matthew Pierre, said that the energy company had reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the league and was proud to sponsor basketball, alongside other sports. He urged the players to play hard but with discipline and good sportsmanship, and to use the opportunity to progress to higher levels of the game. Pierre also expressed the desire to see more teams from Mayaro itself taking part in the tournament.

Apart from showcasing the immense basketball talent in the region, a major objective of the initiative was to foster greater camaraderie among the various communities and provide wholesome activities for the youths, explained Pierre, himself a former stand-out national player.

South Corner chairman, Quammie Alexis, said that his organisation was grateful to bpTT for its partnership in reviving basketball in the region, adding that the SCBF would utilise all the resources at its disposal to ensure that the game grows from strength to strength.

Former T&T basketball stars Derek ‘Cornbread” James and Stephen “Lighter” Lewis witnessed the launch.

Competition in the premier and under-19 divisions will resume at the Mayaro Indoor Sport Facility on Saturday, September 1, while the community league will see action on Wednesdays, starting from September 7.

THE Maloney Gardens Community once again played host to the 'Stories of Success' basketball academy summer camp, which ran from the July 11 – August 29, at the Maloney Indoor Sports Arena.
Led by former national player and SOS Basketball Academy Head Coach Kern George, the 2016 'Ball All Summer' basketball camp maintained its focus on enhancing participants' knowledge and athletic ability in the sport of basketball, encouraging the pursuit of educational achievement and advocating socially responsible behaviour.
The success of the camp was once again made possible through the support of a cast of dedicated personnel. SOS assistant coach Kenyatta Alfred was a mainstay throughout the camp, and was ably assisted by Stefan Dillon (Head Coach of the University of Trinidad and Tobago) and Ian “Poison” Gomes (Brian Chase Basketball Academy coach).
Avionne Maule (Defence Force) lent her expertise in physiotherapy, while Renaldo Alexander and Saleem Henry of GT Fitness challenged the campers with a series of strength and conditioning exercise routines over the course of the two months.
Kenrick Julien and Patrick Scipio (recently recruited to the Wiley College, Texas Basketball Programme), as well as ex-NBA player Terry DeHere, mentored the group, offering insight to their experiences and words of encouragement to keep pushing to be better on and off the court.
Over 50 participants from Trinidad, Tobago and the United States took part in what was the fourth edition of the camp, which in the past has produced several national basketballers at various levels.
Academy members Nickolai Mills, Kalique Robertson-Forrester, Jedidiah Celestine and Jamal Prince journeyed to Georgetown, Guyana as part of the Trinidad and Tobago Boys' Under 16 Basketball Team that took part in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) U16 Championship in July.
At the under-15 level, Jadon Daniel and Jaheim Evelyn joined Mills, Prince and Robertson-Forrester on the T&T roster in Patillas, Puerto Rico for the CentroBasket U-15 Championships in late August. And in Jamaica, Charles Williams, Clint Graham and Mohammed Elias all featured for Team T&T on their way to bagging gold at the Caribbean Hoopfest Under 19 Tournament in Montego Bay, also in August.
With the conclusion of the “Ball All Summer” Camp, training now returns to its regular weekend schedule (Saturdays 9am – 1pm, Sundays 5pm – 7pm), with attention now switching to preparation for the NBFTT National Boys & Girls U-17 3x3 Championships, as well as the Digicel NBA Jumpstart Clinics.

Basketball Federation in limbo again

SPORTS COMMENTARY
Keith Clement

For the second time in six years the sport of basketball has collapsed resulting in many decisions being taken without the necessary Board approval as is required for compliance with the constitution, regulation and decision-making protocol documents of the National Basketball Federation of T&T.

On January 25 this year Garvin Warwick resigned as the sport’s president to take up the appointment of Advisor to Sports and Youth Affairs Minister the Honourable Darryl Smith which left the sport in limbo as he became the fourth of seven elected officers to sever ties with the organisation.

However, back on March 12, the board of directors approved transferring some of the powers of the president to the general secretary with the intention of getting the annual general meeting (AGM)—outstanding since December 2015—organised. In fact, the critical 2014-2018 Strategic Plan of the sport was to be approved at that meeting according to the November 2015 board minutes.

At the September 10 Board meeting the AGM was set for October 15. However, to date no notices were sent to the membership which is one of the critical functions of the general secretary. Notices for AGM must be issued 14 days in advance, so come Saturday the AGM will not be held again.

While the general secretary is parading as the acting president of the organisation, no such title was bestowed upon her at the March 12 meeting according to article 14.2 of the said constitution. Could you imagine someone signing a letter twice—as general secretary and as acting president? Yes, it happened.

The sport of basketball is currently reeling under mismanagement of every sort because individuals entrusted with office to manage and guide the sport are using it for their own benefit.

Further research also showed that the head coach of the boys under-15 team was relieved of his duties on the recommendation of a board member and the vice president of Organisation and Development who sat on the interview panel for coaches recommended himself for the position. Without board approval he travelled to the tournament in Puerto Rico as the team’s head coach.

When yesterday’s statutory Board was convened at the Conference Room in Maloney, only the general secretary and representatives from the South and North Zones were present which meant once again there was no quorum to conduct the business of basketball.

Of the three elected officers left, the vice president of Finance and the assistant secretary have not attended Board meetings since May. What is also sad is that the vice president of Finance has not tabled a financial report since August 2015, a concern that was raised during the Board’s aborted meeting on May 14.

Despite not having constitutional board approval, the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago continues to fund projects that are submitted to it by the general secretary.

Further, the key general meeting, according to article 19.4 of the constitution which requires that the membership be presented with the sports’ annual budget, development and strategic plans, did not take place despite its being constitutionally due before September 30 each year. In fact, this year marks the third consecutive year that such a meeting did not take place.

The big question is what is the basketball fraternity, the clubs and players who are directly affected doing about this? This year with the exception of Tobago there were no zonal competitions and there will be no National Tournament.

On assuming office in September 2015, Minister of Sports Darryl Smith promised the population that under his watch sporting organisations would be held accountable for every cent of taxpayers’ monies given to them.

The record will show that following the 2014 AGM Team Strong led by Warwick was elected into office unopposed with officers Garvin Warwick (president), Alexis Browne (vice president—Organisation and Development) and Daron Lall (vice president—Training and Technical). However, they all resigned by January 2016. The vice president—Marketing and Communication Chezette Baillie, who was not on a slate, also resigned.

The elected officers of the Basketball Federation are Hyacinth Hart, the vice president of Finance; Claire Mitchell, the general secretary; and Arnold Thomas, assistant secretary.

The last time the sport was in a similar crisis was in 2010.

Baptiste powers Police to b-ball honours

Rachel Thompson-King

Forward Aneicia Baptiste’s allround performance in the final of the Female Basketball Association (Fem BA) Under-21 Easter Basketball Tournament helped Police claim the inaugural title and earned her the “Most Valubale Player” award.

Baptiste topscored with 20 points, pulled down five rebounds and stole the ball eight times to pilot Police past Quarters United, 63-50 in the title match on April 16 at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Tacarigua.

She had help in the form of another forward Janeisha Casssimy, who registered a double-double adding 14 points and grabbed 10 rebs. She also shared the ball three times to aid in the victory.

Their teammate Tahirah Hollingsworth also reached double-figures, netting 12.

For Quarters, Shania Emmanuel, who was named the league MVP, scored a match-high 23 points, securing 15 boards and six steals and Breanna Charles poured in 11, had three rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

“Watching the final between Quarters and Police was so heart-warming and exciting. The game was intense like a college basketball game. Steal after steals, rebounds, blocks and assists, great shooting and eye vision of the court,” said the coordinator of the league, Alicia Cumberbatch.

“The emotions I felt was unexplainable towards this game but one thing I know we (the committee members) at Fem BA will help those get better and become great by allocating the players to development programmes in T&T.”

Emmanuel was definitely one of the bright spots in the league. She was most deserving of the league award tallying 47 points, 25 rebounds, nine steals, two assists and two blocks, guiding her team to the final after playing unbeaten in the preliminary round on April 14. She also got the trophies for having the most points and best defensive player.

The following day (April 15) during the All Star activities, Emmanuel emerged the MVP and the three-point shootout winner while her teammate Jamika Knights was the U-21 Skills Challenge winner.

At the award ceremony of the three-day tournament, Police head coach Alfonso Raphael picked up the prize after being named the “Coach of the League”, Ize-Tao Best of Malick and Brian Chase Academy’s Joreius Headley shared the “Most Improved Player” award.

“Fem BA would like to express our deepest gratitude to our sponsors, Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Haynes Plumbing 1990 Limited, Micron Limited, Renova Limited and Plenty Sport, participants, media represetatives and supporters for helping us make yet another successful tournament,” said Cumberbatch, a national player.

“Fem BA will continue to improve the state of basketball for our female basketballers in T&T. Failure is not an option.”

Connelly leads Police to FemBa title

A leading 36 points from Kielle Connelly saw the power forward lead Police to its second straight title in the Female Basketball Association (FemBA) Tournament held over the weekend at the Maloney Indoor Sports Arena.

Connelly helped the policewomen defeat Quarters United 91-61 in the final on Sunday evening in the two-day competition which had some of this country’s top senior players and up-and-coming basketballers on show.

“It feels good,” said a proud Connelly. “Even better because it was basically a young side. Glad to have led them to victory.”

Connelly emerged as the “Most Valuable Player” (MVP) in the finale for her all-round performance also grabbing four rebounds, had two assists and stole the ball three times.

“By winning it (MVP award), I just hope the younger ones coming up take example of how I play. I tried to lead the team and it wasn’t easy because the other teams gave us a great run for our money.”

She did not do it alone though as she was well supported by six-footer centre Samantha Wallace with 16 points, eight rebounds, three steals and a block, and Joelisa Cooper with 13 points, grabbed two boards and stole the ball four times. The team effort helped Police win its second consecutive title in as many years.

“It feels great,” said Connelly of helping Police defend its crown. “It’s like we’re helping contribute to women’s basketball in the country in some way.”

Police entered the final as the only unbeaten team, winning its two matches on the opening day, Saturday, against Quarters (68-57) and Brian Chase (36-33). In both matches, Connelly was the topscorer notching 29 and 20, respectively. Quarters edged Brian Chase by one point (45-44) in the other match to finish with a better record and progressed to the decider.

Stepping up for the south-based Quarters unit was Jamika Knights, who produced a team-high 24 points in the final with three steals. Her teammates Breanna Charles added 12 and Nilleen Ramdial 10 in a losing effort.

Knights picked up a number of prizes including being named the MVP of the All Star match, was the best Under-16 player and won the skills challenge. Also receiving individual awards were Wallace (best defensive player) and her teammate Tia Bruno won the three-point shooting contest in one of the few competitions that showcased women’s basketballers this year.

“I applaud FemBA for doing this. It was just sad that the people who claim to love the sport so much didn’t come out and support,” said a disappointed but optimistic Connelly. “But these young ladies coming up are going to be a force to reckon with."

40 kids to participate in March Mayhem Basketball Skills Clinic

On Saturday and Sunday, Spartans TT Sports Club will host March Mayhem Basketball Skills Clinic with American coach Mark Cook.

Spartans TT has partnered with British Airways on this Clinic as part of their Flying Start programme, which is a global charity partnership between British Airways and Comic Relief. British Airways wants to help give children in the countries, which they fly, to the chance to have a brighter future. This is why 100 percent of monies raised by this Clinic will go directly to Comic Relief.

The camp will be hosted at the Jean Pierre Complex from noon to 3 pm both days. A total of 40 kids from different clubs, between the ages of 14-17 years, were selected to participate in this two-day skills Clinic.

As part of their sponsorship, British Airways will have Gold cardholders, and local sports icon, Dwight Yorke, make an appearance at the start of the event, noon on Saturday. He has also pledged to give a motivational lecture to the kids on the essential ingredients to success in sports and at the end, distribute autographed Manchester United t-shirts to each participant. Cook is certified by FIBA, NFHS, Stanford University and Columbia University. Cook has worked with Fast Break Kids AAU, Brooklyn Rams AAU and Urban Assembly of Global Commerce High School, before becoming head coach of the Boys JV Basketball team at Avenues The World Upper School in 2014.

He worked with NYC Basketball Kids, and has had the opportunity to lead youth basketball clinics with the Brooklyn Nets and NBA players such as Zach Lavine, CJ McCollum and Devin Booker.

Army marches past Police 99-89 in OT

Rachael Thomspon-King

Defence Force forward Steven Lewis brought the excitement on the opening night of the Barry Stewart Invitational Basketball League, so too his opposing Police point guard Ronell Winter, but it was the army coastguard combination team that prevailing with an exciting 99-89 overtime win.

The Men’s Premier Division match unfolded at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Chaguanas on Sunday. It was the feature match of four played on the night in three divisions to mark the Second edition of the league, which is being held in honour of Vibert “Passay” Dean, a long-standing player whom the basketball fraternity lost in May.

It was a pretty even match from the jump with the police officers taking an early 26-22 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, Defence Force boosted by Lewis with support from Kensley Sandy (16) and Kerry McMillan (10) fought back and grabbed a four-point advantage at the halfway mark.

That lead was short-lived though as Police rallied back in the third period to go ahead by a narrow one point (62-61) as the teams continued to trade baskets into the fourth quarter.

Winter was fierce from beyond the three-point arc, connecting 10 in his match-high 33 points but it was the one he hit with two seconds left to play that was most critical as it levelled the scores at 85 to send the match into an extra five minutes of overtime play.

Police though lost some its lustre in the extra time, only adding four points to its total while Defence Force went on to dominate scoring 14 in that period, to emerge with the 10-point win.

Police had two other players scoring in double-figures including forward Wesley Vincent (19) and post-player Don Wilkinson 18 but in a losing effort.

Earlier in the other match in the top division, Straker Nets defeated Stories of Success (SOS) Basketball Academy, 81-75. Play got on the way after T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC) president Brian Lewis did the jump ball.

SOS spurred on by twin brothers Ahkeem and Ahkeel Boyd made a huge comeback in the fourth and final quarter after being down by 20 points (67-47) at the end of the third period but it was not enough to overcome Starker.

Post-player Ashton Demurrell top-scored for the winner with 20 points and his teammate Triston Benjamin added 10 in the six-point win.

In the Under-19 Division match-up, led by Josiah James with 21 points, Grande Young Stars beat New Age Lions, 55-47 while in the U-15 category, Uthman Bilal (18) starred for 500 Hawks in their 47-34 win over Brian Chase Academy.

Also in attendance to witness the exciting matches were former national player Gerard Moore, who played at New Mexico State University under legendary coach Lou Henson. Moore of Point Fortin was an All American at Southeast Illinois College (SIC) and in 2008 was inducted into the SIC Hall of Fame. He also competed with Straker Nets in the past.

Forward Kern George netted an easy lay-up to score the winning point for the Stories of Success (SOS) team in its 41-35 victory over Sweaters of Sangre Grande in the Sangre Grande Ruff & Ready 4v4 Basketball League at the Foster Road Basketball court on Saturday.

George's final basket worth a single point to reach 41 points to bring it home for the Maloney-based SOS team in the inaugural league with a new concept to basketball competition according to coordinator Jeffrey Harris.

He said, " We got the idea from looking at FIBA 3v3 and the Big 3 League being played in the US." The main rules are as follows seven players per team - four playing with three run-in substitutes - on any dead ball. There is a 12-minute stoppage time per half. One point per basket inside the arc, two points per basket outside the arc, and three points per basket once scored from the three-point spot identified on the court.

There are two ways a team can win, the first is having the most points at the end of stoppage time or the team, which reaches 41 points first, wins.

"Popular local basketball players are participating in the excitement while we bring to T&T, the 'Rocka Park' experience. We have player interviews, fans interviews, an in-game DJ and commentary and every night giveaways," said Harris, adding to the thrill of the innovative competition, which has 10 teams competing for the $10,000 first place prize. The runner-up receives $5,000 and the third place finisher gets $3,000.

The other teams are Buckets of Arouca, Ball Hungry of St Augustine, D'Hill of Lavantille, Golden State (Valencia), Sangre Grande All Stars, Grande Ext (Sangre Grande), Rebels (Sangre Grande) and Hey Now (Tacarigua).

Harris works on a committee that include Kevin Thomas, Mickiel Williams, Francis Harris and Marlon Burnett , all of the Sangre Grande community for a tournament sponsored by Savings & Deals Supermarket, Cost Cutters Supermarket, Darryl's Famous Foods, Juteram Auto Supply, Phats International, Be The Change Movement, and other community members of Sangre Grande.

George will be back on the court tomorrow (Saturday) with his SOS team aiming for its third straight win after beating Hey Now, 41-38, last Friday. The Maloney unit will play Ball Hungry, who has a win against Grande Ext (35-24) and a loss to Buckets (33-30).

Martin's dunk wins it for Straker Nets

Centre Allister Martin slammed home the game-winner for Straker Nets to register a tough 86-84 win over Stories of Success (SOS) Basketball Academy to take Game 1 of the best-in-three series of the semifinals contest. Action was in the Men's Premier Division of the Barry Stewart Basketball League which is titled "Basketball For Basketballers" and played at the Maloney Indoor Sports Arena on Tuesday night.

With 0.57 seconds left in the match and scores tied 84-84, point guard Sadiki Guerra drove from the top of the key down the middle lane, drew three defenders and simply slipped the ball to the awaiting hands of the six-footer Martin, who put down a huge dunk while being fouled in the process. This sent the Straker Nets bench into a frenzy sensing victory.

Martin (10 points) missed the free throw to complete the three-point play, and Kern George grabbed the rebound and unleashed a last-gasp long-range shot from deep into the other end of the court, but his shot missed its target, gifting the Straker team the opening win.

"The game was really tough, SOS played their hearts out," said Guerra following the match. He scored a team-high 23 points.

The SOS players will rue their missed chance of giving Straker its first loss of the season after leading by as much as 20 points (59-39) in the third quarter thanks to a dazzling shooting performance from point guard Ahkeel Boyd from beyond the three-point arc. He connected seven three-pointers overall for his match-high 36 points.

"In the first quarter, the point guard got too much of free shots. He was killing us," said Guerra. "He scored like four threes in the first quarter. Whoever had to mark the brothers had to stay close to them."

The other brother he was referring to was Ahkeem Boyd, who added 13 to SOS's score.

SOS did their homework, restricting Straker's leading scorers this season, Jeffrey Harris and Guerra, in the first two quarters while getting the jump on the more experienced team.

The Maloney-based team SOS backed by its home-based supporters, raced to a 26-14 lead in the first period and built up a 32-17-point advantage in the next quarter but with the likes of guard Joel Hinds and post player Moriba De Freitas keeping up the attack for Straker, their team rallied back to trail, 45-37 at the half.

In the third quarter, SOS mounted its biggest lead of the match 59-39 with 5.11 minutes to go in the period, but it was short-lived as Straker determined not to be upset by the young team, fought back and managed to pull within 10 (61-51) with 1.12 on the clock in the third. The period ended with SOS still in control, leading 66-55.

"The coach told us we're down by 18 points, we just have to claw back on each play, and we will get back into the game," said Guerra on the advice of coach Barry Stewart as Straker through its low-post game chipped away at the lead.

The inexperience of SOS coach Kemrick Julien showed as his team started to implode.

George was guilty of two turnovers which Straker converted into five points as the opposition came within two points, 77-75 with 4.01 minutes remaining in the match. Moments later he was one of four SOS players to foul out. The others were Ahkeem Boyd (13), Charles Williams and Brandon Kelly. Straker too had two players fouling out in Harris and Steve Williams.

Meanwhile, De Freitas tied the score (77-77) with a dunk and later went to the free throw line after being fouled. He connected one of two free throws to give Straker, its first lead of the match, 78-77. The teams continued to exchange baskets, and it was in the final play of the intense match-up started by Guerra that determined the winner. This after Boyd (Ahkeel) turned over the ball passing the ball out-of-bounds.

"We listened to our coach, and we clawed back to win the game," said a pleased Guerra.

Tonight the teams return to the court at the Jean Pierre Complex in Port-of-Spain for game two with Straker seeking to close-out and book its spot in next week's best-of-three series finale.

Detour Shak Attack will have the same intention tonight as well as it takes on Defence Force in game two of their semifinal series. Led by post player Shawn Lawrence with 19, Shak Attack defeated the Army/Coastguard combination team, 82-74.

Former University of T&T (UTT) players, Jeffery Harris and Joel Hinds, have been chosen as assistant coaches for the Frenchy US Camp which started on Friday in France. The camp will be staged across 110 cities over a 12-week period.

Harris and Hinds will travel to a new city in France every week to coach a different group of kids. Their participation is mainly through the initiative of national player Kyle Rowley with assistance from former national team manager, Albert Lee Young.

Rowley has partnered with Frenchy Associate in the global strategy and marketing of its programmes. This year's camp will be the biggest in Europe.

Frenchy Associate is the leading establishment for basketball camps in Europe and is managed by the president of the organisation, Arthur Framery. It organises basketball camps, entirely in English, using the latest and most elite equipment for European clubs and academies all around the world.

Young participants will have the opportunity to play basketball in an elite programme and with a high level of training which can help them to improve their skills, abilities and understanding of the game. The participants are from nine to 20 years old.

Over the years, Frenchy Associate has had strong growth in terms of the number of kids and camps. From the first camp in 2013 with 35 participants to the 110 camps with 3,500 participants this year covering France, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and Spain.

PORT OF SPAIN (Trinidad and Tobago) — Doors have started to open wide in Trinidad for two outstanding young players that are showing great promise in basketball.

According to the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT), two of their best basketball players younger than 13, Ty Warwick and Carissa Ramdial, have been called to participate at Club Enterprise Basketball in Maryland, USA, as part of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).

This is a great opportunity for these girls to experience a higher level of competition and, at the same time, showcase their abilities in front of high school coaches and academies with superb athletic programs.

The first tournament will take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from June 28 to July 1 and players could eventually participate in other competitions in the future.

“The NBFTT is very proud of our elite women athletes Carissa Ramdial and Ty Warwick,” said Federation President Claire Mitchell to FIBA.basketball. “This could open doors for other young prospects at a time when the development of women’s basketball in Trinidad and Tobago is on the rise.”

In Warwick’s case, she had already participated in the club last year and was an essential part of the roster that achieved the title of the Summer Slam Tournament. This made her the recipient of an invitation to play with the team to the East Coast AAU National Championships.

Ramdial, for her part, had been part of the Latin American camp of the Jr. NBA in Brazil after being scouted by UBA’s coach in 2018.

AAU is one of the largest nonprofit sports organizations in the world. Established in 1930, today it has more than 700,000 members and 150,000 volunteers in its 41 sports programs. The organization's mission is to offer local and national sports events to promote the mental, moral and physical development of its participants.

COLLEGIATE PLAYERS WILL BE COACHING ASSISTANTS IN FRANCE

Meanwhile, the Federation also announced that two of its national college players were chosen to be assistant coaches in several camps that will take place in France. Jeffery Harris and Joel Hinds will be part of the Frenchy US Camp, whose schedule includes over 110 stops throughout three months, and will welcome players of the ages of 9 to 20. The opportunity arises from the initiative of national team players Kyle Rowley and former national team General Manager Albert Lee Young, who will oversee the global marketing strategy of the camps.

Clippers Crowned National Champions

Caledonia Clippers emerged men’s champions of the National Basketball Federation of T&T’s (NBFTT) National Invitational Championships (NIC) after defeating Stories of Success (SOS) Basketball Academy 108-95 in the decider at the Maloney Indoor Sports Arena on Sunday.

Kirk Baptiste led the way for Clippers with a game-high 25 points as Clippers swept the three-game series 2-0.

SOS entered game two already at a disadvantage following a narrow 77-76 loss to Clippers in game one on Thursday.

In a frantic effort to keep their championship hopes alive, the SOS unit was combative from the jump, applying defensive pressure from coast-to-coast. During the first quarter, it was a showdown between Clippers’ Kurt “Koto” Christian and SOS’ Ahkeel “Smally” as the two guards were going at each other on each possession.

The young SOS group stayed within striking range in the first half of play, limiting the on-court production of Clippers’ Adrian Joseph through their defensive strategy and ending the first two quarters 24-29 and 52-55 respectively.

However, Ako Pascal, who recorded a season-high 35 points in Caledonia’s victory over SOS during the regular season, began to heat up, scoring 11 of his 22 points in the second period.

In the second half, the physicality of the contest grew much to the disadvantage of the SOS outfit. Despite SOS’ open displeasure with the officials, the men in orange ferociously battled throughout the entire contest.

In spite of SOS’ fight, it was not enough as Joseph, Pascal, Christian and defensive specialist Baptiste combined for 44 points in the Clippers’ 53-point charge towards the end of regulation as they swept their opponents.

Seven teams participated in this year’s competition. The other teams were Police, Brian Chase Basketball Academy, Maloney Pacers, Prisons and Defence Force.

Following the preliminary round, SOS finished at the top of the table and the Clippers, Defence Force and Police were ranked second, third and fourth respectively.

Clippers swept Defence Force 2-0 in the Big Four semi-finals, securing their place in the series final. SOS’ journey was a bit longer as they defeated Police 2-1.

In the women’s division, Police, Defence Force, Brian Chase and Enterprise-Maloney Combined fielded teams to form a pool of four in the competition, which jumped off in December with some of the top available teams in T&T in the men’s and women’s divisions.

Police were crowned the women’s champions with Defence Force placing second and BCBA securing third place.

Score:

CLIPPERS 108 (Kirk Baptiste 25, Ako Pascal 22, Kurt Christian 22, Adrian Joseph 16) v SOS 95 (Ahkeel Boyd 24, Kern George 14, Keron Stephens 12, Jelani Valley 11).

Quarter scores: 1st. 29-24, 2nd. 55-52, 3rd. 86-70 (All in favour of Clippers).

Clippers won series 2-0

Special Awards:

• MVP: Adrian Joseph (Clippers)

• Best Defensive Player: Kirk Baptiste (Clippers)

• Most Promising Player: Ahkeel Boyd (SOS)

BIG BASKETBALL LEAGUE TO JUMP OFF IN NOVEMBER
by ianwason

The inaugural Big Basket Basketball League is set to jump off in November with 10 of this country’s biggest basketball teams. With sports recently reopening, after its closure due to the covid-19 pandemic, basketball is set to be in for a time.

As the name suggests, the Big Basketball League will be the biggest privately run league, sanctioned by the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago.

The League will see 10 teams divided into 2 conferences, with each of the 10 teams playing each other once. The top 2 teams in each of the conferences will square off for the conference’s best of 5 finals. The conference winners will then play in the best of 7 finals.

Some of the features of the League include 12 minutes duration of the quarters instead of 10 minutes and the All-Star Weekend at the end of the regular season where the fans will determine who plays in the All-Star Game. There will also be a reward for the team with the noisiest and best supporters.

Families will be encouraged to come out in their numbers on Christmas day and on New Years’ day as some mouth-watering fixtures will await basketball lovers. Fans and supporters can keep up with the tournament on wavetvtt.com to check fixtures, results, and stories, as well as vote for the All-Star starters and the MVP.

All 45 regular season games will be streamed live in addition to the playoffs. Fixtures will be released as soon as all the teams confirm participation.

The League is expected to begin on the first Friday in November with games on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until the playoffs.

Basketball fraternity welcomes rebuilding of Jean Pierre Complex
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH

THE LOCAL basketball fraternity welcomes the reconstruction of the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.

The longstanding multi-sport facility, opened in 1979 for the staging of the Netball World Cup, is earmarked for demolition and rebuilding by the Ministry of Sport and Community Development owing to its outdated and irreparable state.

The venue is the official home of netball but also a major host for sports including basketball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis.

Since the pandemic hit in March 2020, the facility was closed and did not reopen when covid19 restrictions were lifted earlier this year because of its derelict condition.

Sport Minister Shamfa Cudjoe confirmed last Wednesday that it needs and will get a total overhaul.

Claire Mitchell, National Basketball Federation (NBFTT) president, welcomes the reconstruction.

“The Jean Pierre Complex, since its creation, has been the most coveted and easily accessible place for basketball and other sport to be played.

“I support the demolition and rebuilding of it as soon as possible, as inaccessibility to it is creating a gaping hole in the development of basketball in the north zone and the Caribbean,” Mitchell said.

She hopes the complex is replaced with amenities to host national, regional or international tournaments or even a basketball World Cup. This comes on the heels of TT’s inaugural participation at the FIBA 3x3 Under-18 World Cup in Hungary last week.

To host such high-calibre events, Mitchell said, “This would require at least a world-class tournament court, warm-up courts/areas, seating accommodation, parking, bathroom facilities and dormitories for local preparation camps. The new complex should also act as a national team training centre.”

The Jean Pierre Complex has an indoor court with seating and two outdoor courts with stadium seating. It stands in the same compound as the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The stadium is also in visible disrepair and in need of refurbishment.

A decision on whether major restoration work or possible total reconstruction would be done on the stadium remains uncertain until further assessments are done.

Works on the two facilities however, will only start after TT hosts the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in August 2023.

In the interim, only facilities being used as official CYG venues, such as the Dwight Yorke Stadium (Tobago) and Couva’s Ato Boldon Stadium, the National Cycling Velodrome and National Aquatics Centre will get the lion’s share of restoration.

So work on the complex will begin in late 2023 or early 2024.

Mitchell added the lengthy wait for the venue may be a challenge, but believes the end result augurs well for basketball development.

“Basketball will surely suffer in the interim. However, in pursuit of excellence, these are some of the pitfalls that occur. The hope and increased opportunities for the development of the sport that rebuilding brings will be worth it in the end.”

Currently, netball and basketball, among other sports, have been using other indoor arenas to host events, practise and prepare for tournaments.

For indoor training, they use the Southern Regional facility in Pleasantville, Maloney Indoor Complex and Woodbrook Youth Facility, and for outdoor use, Nelson Mandela Park in St Clair and Maloney Outdoor courts.

“The reality is that we cannot use the complex as a venue resource in its present condition. Basketball and others are already exploring alternatives such as training and playing outdoors.

“We struggle around the weather, the effect of certain surfaces on our joints, inadequate changing rooms, competition with community residents and other disenfranchised sporting disciplines for space etcetera.

“We have to do something positive with the convenient space that the Jean Pierre Complex occupies and move forward with purpose,” Mitchell said.

I don't know about the Caribbean. I do know it is a gaping hole in TT netball and basketball. I would really like to see how they will redesign this facility. I do hope the main court has removable playing surface for basketball and netball. But certainly welcoming news.

The Jean Pierre complex as a sporting venue had problems from the very beginning with it’s design. If memory serves me right I believe it was designed by Emile Elias. Where the gym is was an after taught of what to
do with that space after the outer courts were designed. Sports like table tennis and badminton could not use the gym because of the air coming in from the top. The eventually took care to some extent of that but from day 1 it was as a badly designed sporting facility.
