James Russell "Rusty" Houser methodically shot 11 people in a Lafayette, Louisiana, movie theater on Thursday night using a handgun he legally purchased from an Alabama pawn shop, authorities said Friday.
Houser stood up in the theater where the comedy "Trainwreck" was showing and fired off one 10-round clip, Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craig said at a press conference.
"This was slow and methodical," Gov. Bobby Jindal said. "This was not a single burst."
Houser left the theater through a side door and headed toward his car, a 1995 Lincoln, but saw a police cruiser arrive in the parking lot, Craig said.
Houser, 59, reloaded his handgun, re-entered the theater and fired three more rounds, Craig said.
Then Houser, a law school graduate with a history of mental problems, fatally shot himself in the head, Craig said.
"Out of 20 rounds he shot 11 people, but some people suffered multiple wounds," Craig said. "One person was shot four times."
Two women in the theater were killed and nine were injured. Craig said four of the wounded have been released from hospitals. Of the five still hospitalized, four are in stable condition and one is critical, he said.
The gun Houser used, a Highpoint .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol, was legally purchased in February 2014 from a pawn shop in Phenix City, Alabama, Craig said, citing the the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Police don't know why Houser opened fire in the theater or why he came to Lafayette, about 500 miles from his stomping grounds in Georgia and Alabama.
Besides an uncle who died about 35 years ago, Houser, 59, didn't have any known connection to the city of 120,000.
He arrived on July 2 or 3 and had been staying in a motel, Craig said. He had just borrowed $5,000 from his mother, said Louisiana State Police Col. Michael Edmonson, but "he needed money."
Craig said authorities think Houser even went to a church in Lake Charles and obtained food and money. He'd been talking to some locals about opening an oil-change business, the chief said.
But he never said or did anything that presaged the outbreak of violence.
Craig said police are researching Houser's movements and reading his journals and his online political blogs, in which he railed against government. There's no indication he had an accomplice, Edmonson said.
At the press conference in the theater parking lot, Jindal, a presidential candidate, was asked what he would do to stem gun violence. He declined to talk about that, saying, "It hasn't been 24 hours. Let's focus on these families."

ROSEBURG, Ore. Ten people were killed when a gunman opened fire at Oregons Umpqua Community College on Thursday, forcing the nation to face yet another mass shooting.
Seven other people were injured, and the shooter is dead, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin told reporters. Earlier estimates had put the number of people hurt much higher.
Multiple law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation identified the gunman as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer. Investigators have interviewed members of his family and friends, they said.
I will not name the shooter, Hanlin said. I will not give him the credit he probably sought.
Authorities credited a quick response by law enforcement for keeping the death toll from climbing higher.
A law enforcement official said shooter Chris Harper Mercer had body armor with him and was heavily armed, with a large amount of ammunition enough for a prolonged gunfight.
Hanlin said tactical teams and bomb squads had cleared the buildings on campus and were working to clear hundreds of vehicles parked on campus.

And with the fatal shooting in Virginia today in which a gunman shot himself after killing two reporters and wounding one more person plus the shooting of four during a Minneapolis home invasion, the number of mass shooting incidents has risen to 247 for the year.
These numbers are compiled by the moderators of the GunsAreCool subreddit, a sarcastically named community that tracks gun violence in America. They define "mass shooting" as any single incident in which at least four people are shot, including the gunman. The tracker comes in for some criticism because its definition is broader than the FBI's definition, which requires three or more people to be killed by gunfire. But the broader definition is nonetheless a useful one, because it captures many high-profile instances of violence like the recent Lafayette theater shootings that don't meet the FBI's criteria.
Some gun rights advocates like John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center object that the broader definition includes a lot of gang killings and domestic disputes that the average person wouldn't necessarily consider a "mass shooting." But there's an uncomfortable assumption here that some crime victims' lives should be valued differently or are less worthy of attention than others.
A more expansive definition of "mass shooting" underscores the extent to which firearms make it relatively easy to hurt large numbers of people in a very short time. With a gun, you're able to inflict bodily harm on a person once they're in your line of sight. With something like a knife or your hands, you need to get right up close to a person.
There's no easy fix to gun violence in this country. As gun rights proponents are quick to point out, municipalities with strict gun laws, like Chicago and D.C., see more than their fair share of gun crime. But it's nevertheless a fact that the level of gun violence we see in the U.S. is like nothing seen in other wealthy Western nations.

KUSA - More people are starting to wonder if the deadly rampage at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood Friday that left three people dead and nine others wounded was domestic terrorism.
"Well, certain it's -- it is a form of terrorism," Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-Colorado) said on CNN's State of the Union Sunday.
But just because an act is violent doesn't mean it qualifies as domestic terrorism, said former ATF Special Agent John Risenhoover. He has investigated domestic terrorism cases before. During his more than two decades with the agency, Risenhoover worked on the Oklahoma City bombing, which remains the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history.
"One of the things that's really tough when you talk about domestic terrorism is you have to prove intent and motivation," Risenhoover said. "There has to be a goal. Usually political, usually to influence government."
The United States government defines domestic terrorism as activities with the following three characteristics:
Involve acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law;
Appear intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination. or kidnapping; and
Occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S.
Risenhoover says categorizing this crime as domestic terrorism in this case would be possible, but 9NEWS legal analyst Scott Robinson points out it's not an option on the state level.
"There is no Colorado domestic terrorism law," Robinson said. "We don't really define domestic terrorism."
Robinson echoed Risenhoover's assessment: the case could qualify, once a motive is clear.
"Is this an act of domestic terrorism? That's up to the listener to decide. But certainly, with multiple people injured and killed, and what could be a political motivation, it might well be," Robinson said.
The only way to charge the gunman under domestic terrorism would be to bring forth federal charges.
And, even if it does fit the definition, domestic terrorism doesn't carry any specific charge -- in other words, there's no crime of "domestic terrorism."
The U.S. Attorney for Colorado's spokesman told NBC News has they support the state investigation at this time.

Ribbit, good question, I suspect a bit of both. I was trying to point out that when white folks commit mass murders the default position in the media always seems to be that they were not right in the head. It's not a benefit of the doubt that gets extended to others.
Also it feels like words such as thug and terrorist have evolved to become catch-all slurs against particular groups thus making it easier to dismiss their actions rather than searching for a root cause. (Want to point out that I am by no means trying to excuse any violence committed by anyone no matter their justification or perceived grievance). It's much easier to say thugs (i.e. Blacks) are low lifes than talk about lack of opportunities in black communities. Terrorists "hate us for our freedom" papers over deeper questions about Western policy in the ME, Israel/Palestine.
But seriously, would a person in their right mind strap a bomb to their chest and walk into a place full of civilians and detonate so they could please an all powerful God (one so powerful that they need them to smite the unbelievers in their stead) and get 72 virgins?

Yuh banging yuh head ... understandably so. Yet, in the White House Trump and Sarah Huckabee Sanders et al. are likely "glad" to be off blast due to the shooting. No pun intended.
