Some impressive times for our under 18 at the Carifta trials.
Keep an eye open for:
Avindale Smith 16y 100m
Adell Colthurst 17y 100m (Glad to see he made the team)
Jenae Spinx 17y 100m
Akilah Lewis 17y 100m
Deleth Charles 16y 100m
Jacob St clair 19y 400m
Judah Taylor 19y 400m
Rae Ann Serville 15y 400m (This girl is special)
Che Lara 16y 400m
This is the first time in a long time that we have 3 qualifiers for all under 18 100m and 400m. This goes for both boys and girls. Will be interesting to see which 2 get chosen for Carifta.
The girls u18 4x400m & 4x100m teams are looking strong. 3 girls made the Carifta standard for the 100m and 400m very easily.
Will post some times soon

Moved this post here from the other thread I posted yesterday:
Carifta trials from tommorrow. Excited to see where Khalifa is. I predict a nice 11.3 opener if the wind behaves. If she is faster she should be in 11.0/sub 11 form in time for Worlds. Who knows, if they get favourable winds she may run a 11.1 at Carifta like last year (discounting the headwind). What would bring me most joy is a sub 23.
Looking forward to seeing other youngsters too! Wishing them continual health and improvement.

The under 18 girls are running well and Jenea Spinks was not in the race. Sad because she would have been a great addition to the relay team and she would have probably won this race. Hope she is not injured.

Rae Ann Serville: definitely one to watch
-
Jenae Spinx has a qualifying time from last week. I also think she made a qualifying time in the Preliminaries. But yes. She might be injured.
That kid Avindale is the real deal. Him and Colthurst is what we were looking for.
-
Rae Ann Serville: definitely one to watch
She is. I think she is actually 14.. 14 with 55.00pb is scary .. Shaunae Miller territory. She beat the u20s . And met the Carifta u20 standard.
-
Hopefully if she recovers she could still get a spot on the relay team at the very least.
I just realized Avindale and Colthurst running very well! This should be a decent Carifta Games.

We have been declining as a team at Carifta for the last few years, winning less and less each year. Let us hope this year we see a turn around for the better
.
-
I think it will be better than last year. Maybe a third place finish behind (we know JA winning) bahamas/b'dos. Not sure if we are quite ready to regain second spot.
Khalifa is slightly ahead of where she was last year. She ran 11.39 with a 2. tailwind at carifta trials. So by that perhaps she may be able to run 11.10/11.09 at carifta if she gets favourable winds and the track ok. By the time worlds come around she should be 11.0/10.9x form barring injury. I pray she remains healthy throughout and all our athletes.

Interested also to see one of Ato's newest charges Kelsha Fortune in action.

Avindale is about 14/15 and ran 10.45 very fast
-
Avindale is about 14/15 and ran 10.45 very fast
Although it was wind aided, it is still a very fast time. Colthurst was the one tipped to be the next great sprinter. But he had some injuries for the past 2 years. Certainly impacted his progression. John is also a good prospect at 15/16 yrs. I can't recall the last time we had 4 u18 making the Carifta standard for the 100m.
I think we have a strong crop coming up:
Smith 100/200
Colthurst 100/200
John 100/200
Lara 200/400
Spinx 100/200
Stanisclaus 100/200
Lewis 100/200
Charles 100/200
Serville 200/400
Too bad Spinx was injured. She probably would have met the u20 standard easily. Despite being u18

I believe she was actually born in the US Virgin Islands which makes her American.
I am guessing that one of her parents is Trini or has Trini roots.

Where did you get info that Kelsha Fortune was running at the 2017 T&T Carifta Trials?
For all you know Kels may already be 20 years old or alternatively may not yet have a T&T passport to officially allow her to Rep 868 at an International Track & Field Meet.

Don't know about Tyrell. But Akanni is an NCAA athlete now. So they ain't letting him compete at Carifta.. Especially considering that the NCAA outdoor season officially starts next week.

Some of the juniors will be competing this weekend for Carifta spots. I believe Jenae Spinx will get an opportunity to tryout for the Carifta Games. Plus Rae Ann Serville will try the 200m after last week's mishap. I think Jenae and Rae Ann will push each other to impressive 200m times.. Stay tuned

Kelsha's DOB is 10-4-98 (same as Sarah Wollaston's) and she has a TNT passport, having competed before at JR Champs/Carifta Trials. That wasn't the problem. The problem is that she got hurt the week before Trials, and even though she wanted to run, I overruled it because I could see the leg wasn't anywhere close to ready yet.
I also kept my 14-year-old phenom, Briana Williams, who was scheduled to be running as a guest, out, because she had PR'ed 4 times in 7 days (11.9, 11.8, then 11.7, 11.66 to make the Jamaican under-18 Carifta team two weekends ago) but she rebounded today with a PR 24.12 the 4th fastest time in US high schools for 2017.

Thanks for clearing that up AB. Keep up the good work with the girls. Btw what are Kelsa's times?
What you think about these 4 juniors coming up.. Serville, Smith Spinx and Colthurst? They have real potential. .

TYRA GITTENS UPDATE
In her 6th event this morning Tyra unfortunately fouled all her 3 attempts in the Javelin throw and scored 0 points in that event as a result. However she is still in gold medal position but needs to win her final event this evening (800m) to still secure gold so the pressure is on.
Tyra Gittens was on course to set a new Carifta record in the Heptathlon but after those 3 fouls in the Javelin throw this morning I don't think a new Carifta record for her is still possible even if she manages to win the final event (800m) and still wins the gold medal as many folks were predicting. I think the current Carifta record is 5231 pts set by Ayesha Champagnie of Jamaica in 2015 at the Carifta Games in St Kitts.
Lets wish Tyra good luck in her Final event, the 800m, this evening!

There is some bad coaching here if she was not advised to at least get her last jump in for points rather than winning the jump. That would have at least secured her position. It is important to first win and hope for records after.

In this interview she said she is from Trinidad & Tobago but live in Tennessee so I am assuming she was born in T&T

We already did better than last year. Last year was terrible
Session five here at Carifta 2017 is over. With one session to go, the T&T count is five gold medals, four silver and six bronze. Already, the 2017 performance has bettered 2016's three gold medals, two silver and nine bronze.

Make that 6 gold. Khalifa does the 1/2 double.

Yes better than last year. It depends how you look at it, I think Bahamas still did better than us. Yes we ahead because of one more gold medal. But they have much more medals than us. I might be sounding picky, I still feel we under-acheiving. I am glad to see some individual outstanding performances. But more has to be done to close the gap with JA.

It look like Puma outfitting most of the teams. That is nice.

At this stage I don't look at who is ahead of us, I am just simply looking at what direction we are going. Hopefully with this improvement from last year we are going in the right direction and we improve more next year.

I certainly agree with you. Better than last year but still not good enough for the financial and athletic resources at our disposal. Our problem again is a lack of planning and organizational structure

ARGUMENTS ABOUT CARIFTA BOYS U20 4X4 FINAL STILL GOING ON
Yes folks, there are still arguments about the Boys U20 4x400m relay final going on on YouTube and elsewhere!
Some Jamaicans are saying that T&T cheated and should have been DQed in the Carifta Boys U20 4x4 Final because in their view Kashief King obstructed Christopher Taylor on the final home straight of the 4th leg.
Here is my argument from a T&T perspective after viewing replays of final:
Sorry guys but it is dishonest to say that T&T's win was dishonest!
T&T won that 4x4 final due to a better team effort and clever strategy and running.
T&T placed its fastest U20 400m sprinter Joshua Jacob St. Clair on the 2nd leg which is exactly where JA messed up and so St. Clair managed to open up a 30m gap by the end of the 2nd leg.
In the end T&T won that race because pressure does 'buss' pipe and Taylor ran out of gas on the final leg for JA due to having a 30m gap to make up!
I hope you do realise that Kashief King and Christopher Taylor were in lanes 2 and 3 respectively at the start of the last 100m down the home straight so both runners gradually changed lanes at the same time and rate coming down the home straight. So does Christopher Taylor of JA have more rights to drift and change lanes coming down the home straight than Kashief King of T&T has? I don't think so.
Maybe if Christopher Taylor had stayed in lane one down the home straight he could have won the race for JA from the inside lane and would not have run out of gas which is what happened which is understandable after having to close a 30m gap.
Jamaica lost this race because they messed up their first exchange and T&T took full advantage and deserved the win for their great team effort.
Well done to all the teams in that final for making it the most entertaining and exciting race of the entire 2017 Carifta Games! :-)

CHRISTOPHER TAYLOR'S NEAR COMEBACK IN CARIFTA GAMES 4X4!
FloTrack, Published on 21 Apr 2017
Trinidad & Tobago took the baton with a huge 30m lead in the CARIFTA Games U20 Boys 4x400m.
Jamaica's Christopher Taylor tried to pull off the comeback, but didn't quite have enough in the tank...
My comment: Christopher Taylor ran out of gas after sprinting the first 350m of his leg almost full out. Kashief King did not hit Christopher Taylor as some Jamaicans are trying to claim though King gradually drifted from lane 1 to lane 3 over the last 100m to make the job of Christopher Taylor's running pass him on the home straight a bit more difficult. That was clever running by King and was within the rules as why should King make the job of Taylor running pass him easy? Also note King did not suddenly jump from lane 1 to lane 3 but gradually drifted from lane 1 into lane 3 over the last 100m which athletes are allowed to do. See video just below for confirmation!
