Toronto FC II sign Ryan Telfer
Toronto FC Communications

Toronto FC II announced Friday that the club has signed forward Ryan Telfer to a USL contract.

“Ryan has been training with us since the beginning of training camp and has fit in well within the group,” said Toronto FC II Head Coach Jason Bent. “He is a player that has good pace and can add a new dimension to the team’s attack. I would also like to thank Carmine Isacco and York University for their role in helping to develop Ryan.”

Telfer, 23, spent the past two seasons at York University. During the 2016 season, he appeared in 14 matches registering five goals and two assists for the Lions. He earned OUA West second-team all-star honours and helped York capture the OUA silver medal. During the 2015 season, he appeared in four matches registering one goal and helped the lions capture both the OUA and CIS championship. Prior to joining York University, Telfer played his youth soccer with the Erin Mills Eagles.

Young Toronto FC II forward, Ryan Telfer, pays quick dividends
By Neil Davidson (The Canadian Press)

Ryan Telfer wasted little time making his mark after signing with Toronto FC 2.

The 23-year-old former York University forward, who officially joined Toronto FC's USL feeder club last Friday, scored eight minutes into his pro debut Saturday night to secure a 1-0 win over Phoenix Rising FC before a soldout crowd of 6,890 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"It was out of this world, to be honest," Telfer said in his lilting Trinidadian accent. "Walking on the field and you have thousands watching you, it was almost like a dream. When you're growing up as a kid, these are things you want to do.

"It's so hard to explain that feeling, just walking into the stadium."

TFC 2 coach Jason Bent appreciates the feel-good story. While the former Canadian international's job is about trying to groom players for his team's MLS big brother, he and his staff also help unearth talent.

Telfer was invited to a TFC-organized college combine late last year after Bent and assistant coach Chris Pozniak, who knew York coach Carmine Isacco and his roster, suggested adding some local players.

A good showing there led to a training camp invitation.

"We thought he was something different — left-footed, very very quick, direct, strong and brave, very very brave," said Bent. "He settled into pre-season camp and did more than fine."

Telfer scored a number of goals in pre-season and convinced the coaching staff he belonged in a fine performance against Ottawa Fury FC.

The young forward paid them back in Phoenix.

"You always want players to justify your selections and he definitely took his opportunity, so it's more down to him than us," said Bent. "It was a good performance from him. He was a threat all night long. They couldn't handle his pace. ... All in all, a good encouraging debut."

His goal was icing on the cake. A sliding Telfer capped off an eight-pass movement that featured a fine through ball from midfielder Jay Chapman and a low accurate cross raked into the penalty box by forward Ben Spencer.

"I couldn't have scored the goal without Chapman and Spencer. And the other bunch of guys that were playing," Telfer said. "They just made it happen. All I had to do was put the finishing touch to it."

The five-foot-11 180-pound Telfer, who started soccer as a goalkeeper before switching to wingback, midfielder and ultimately forward, has been waiting a long time to be noticed. Growing up, Trinidad soccer officials ignored him.

"I've always been looked past, my entire life — until now," he said.

Born in Canada to parents from Trinidad and Tobago, Telfer grew up in Chaguanas in central Trinidad but regularly visited family here. He moved to Canada when he was 17 for school.

These days he is three years into a civil engineering degree at York University, although his studies have been reduced to part-time to fit his soccer in. He practises in the morning, goes to classes in the afternoon and then hits the books in the library in the evening.

He lives in suburban Mississauga which makes for quite a commute to the club's north Toronto training centre. "It's like five buses," he said with a laugh. "Bit of a hectic journey."

A good time to study?

"I use that time to sleep," he laughed.

We are TFC II - Ryan Telfer
By Adam Krueger (torontofc.com)

On this week’s edition of We Are TFC II, we sit down with forward Ryan Telfer.

What has been your favourite moment in your soccer career thus far?

Telfer: Scoring my first pro goal in my first pro start against Phoenix Rising.

Can you take us through that moment?

Telfer: It was unexpected for sure. I was surprised to score in the first seven minutes of my debut. It was an incredible feeling, to be honest. To put the ball in the back of the net to give your team the first goal of the season is truly remarkable.

At what moment did you know you could go pro?

Telfer: When I first got an email from Toronto FC for an invite to the college showcase.

What was it like to go through the showcase?

Telfer: Only a few players from Ontario got selected along with some US based players, after that two-day trial I was invited to preseason. I was like, let’s give it a shot. In preseason, I got to witness what it really takes to become a professional soccer player.

Do you have a coach/mentor who has impacted your soccer career?

Telfer: Carmine Isacco [York University Coach], he believed in my ability and gave me the shot I needed.

You come from the York University program. How was your experience there?

Telfer: It is a great system at York. I got my first playing time two years ago. I started on the bench, last season is when I really got some minutes as a starter. Carmine Isacco put all his faith in me and I showed it out there on the field and gave it my all.

You won two national championships at York. What was that like?

Telfer: To win back-to-back championships. You don’t see that in Canadian university sports. And to win the second one at home in front our fans, it was incredible. It was great to win the championship and bring it back to York.

A player you like to model your game after?

Telfer:  None. I always liked to be creative and be myself.

Taking a quick look at your phone, which photo in it means the most to you?

Telfer: A picture of my nieces and my girlfriend. It makes me realise how lucky and grateful I am to have them in my life.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Telfer: Video Games

Do you have a favourite game?

Telfer: I’m a hardcore Pokemon fan.

Pokemon Go?

Telfer: No Pokemon Go. Just the main RPG games.

You have a favourite generation?

Telfer: Gen two is always a favourite.

Do you have a favourite movie?

Telfer: Harry Potter

Music Artist?

Telfer: Coldplay

If you weren’t playing soccer what would you be doing?

Telfer: I’m still in school trying to get my Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering so I’m currently still doing it so hopefully I’ll be able to finish that up in the next two years.

Why Civil Engineering?

Telfer: When I was coming out of high school I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do. I first thought I wanted to be an architect at first but I knew that field was flooded right now so one of my guidance counselors told me that the engineering spectrum is a great area right now. I chose civil [engineering] because I am good at physics and calculus.

Ryan Telfer making the most of opportunity with Toronto FC
By Neil Davidson (The Canadian Press)

It’s early days yet but the 24-year-old midfielder-forward from Mississauga, via Trinidad and Tobago, is turning heads. Telfer topped off a man-of-the-match performance Friday night with the winning goal in Toronto FC’s 2-1 victory over Orlando City SC.

Telfer, making his fourth start, opened his MLS account with a beauty — a left-footed volley off a long-distance cross from Brazilian fullback Auro.

Two years ago, Telfer was scoring goals for York University. He was invited to a TFC-organized college combine in late 2016 after then-Toronto FC 2 coach Jason Bent and assistant coach Chris Pozniak, who knew York coach Carmine Isacco and his roster, suggested adding some local players.

A good showing there led to a training camp invitation.

“We thought he was something different — left-footed, very very quick, direct, strong and brave, very very brave,” Bent said at the time. “He settled into pre-season camp and did more than fine.”

The five-foot-11 180-pounder wasted little time marking his mark after signing with TFC 2 in March 2017. He scored eight minutes into his pro debut in a 1-0 win over Phoenix Rising FC before a sold-out crowd of 6,890 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Telfer, who had one goal and one assist in 29 TFC 2 matches last season, only signed a first-team deal in mid-April.

His first three starts were at left fullback thanks to a rash of injuries. He moved up to the left side of midfield against Orlando, giving makeshift fullback Will Johnson — in his 249th career MLS start — fits with his probing runs and crosses.

“He did exactly what we wanted him to do on the attacking side,” said coach Greg Vanney. “Which was get on the ball when he could and be aggressive and try to run at the outside back.”

“He gave us an honest day’s work defensively,” he added.

Added midfielder Jay Chapman: “He was dangerous all game.”

Telfer hardly cracked a smile after scoring, admitting later: “To be honest, it hasn’t sunk it as of yet.”

“I’m just happy to be part of the team and help these guys win,” he said in his lilting Trinidadian accent.

With Justin Morrow a long-term casualty with a calf injury and Ashtone Morgan nursing a sore hamstring, Toronto has been short on the left side. Telfer has proved to be a useful, albeit very soft-spoken, addition.

“He’s another guy that’s stepped in and learned and only gotten better with every game he’s played,” said defender Eriq Zavaleta.

“He’s a good kid. He works hard,” he added.

Captain Michael Bradley also likes what he sees, pointing to Telfer’s athleticism, power and competitiveness.

“When we needed a play tonight, he came through for us.”

Born in Canada to parents from Trinidad and Tobago, Telfer grew up in Chaguanas in central Trinidad but regularly visited family here. He moved to Canada for school when he was 17.

Signing with Toronto FC has not gone to his head. He continued his civil engineering degree at York on a part-time basis. And he took a procession of buses to get to the team’s north Toronto training ground.

Telfer, who started soccer as a goalkeeper before switching to wingback, midfielder and ultimately forward, has been waiting a long time to be noticed. Growing up, Trinidad soccer officials ignored him.

“I’ve always been looked past, my entire life — until now,” he said after joining TFC 2.

Ryan Telfer contributing after unexpected path to Toronto FC
By Sam Stejskal (mlssoccer.com)

That wild story that was floating around the internet about Ryan Telfer over the weekend?

It’s not true, according to the Toronto FC player.

While the 24-year-old Telfer was not, in fact, first noticed by the Reds at a chance men’s league indoor match against TFC GM Tim Bezbatchenko, his actual path to the pros is only slightly less unlikely.

Telfer didn’t turn professional until he was 23, years after most top prospects get their start. His first pro deal wasn’t even in MLS, with the Mississauga, Ontario native signing a USL contract with Toronto FC II last March.

Less than a year earlier, after barely playing in his first two years of Canadian college soccer, reaching that level looked like a pipe dream for Telfer.

“I think around 21, around that age I realized I was getting a little bit too old. I thought I was getting a little bit too old to be recognized, to be professional,” Telfer told MLSsoccer.com over the phone earlier this week.

It’s not hard to see why he felt that way. Telfer and his family moved from Ontario to Trinidad when he was less than a year old. He didn’t return to Canada until he was 17. After a couple of years in the Canadian Soccer League and League1 Ontario, he walked on to the team at York University 2014.

At first, it was tough sledding for Telfer at York. He didn’t earn a single minute in his first year at school and only played in four matches in his second season. Minutes weren’t guaranteed in his third year, but Telfer earned time – and took full advantage of it. He recorded five goals and two assists in 14 starts in the 2016 season, earning a conference all-star nod and, crucially, working himself onto TFC’s radar.

TFC II head coach Jason Bent and assistant Chris Pozniak pushed for Telfer to be invited to the club’s annual college combine in December 2016, where Telfer’s solid play earned him an invite to TFC II’s 2017 preseason camp. Once more, Telfer took advantage, impressing enough to earn his first pro offer that March.

He appeared in 29 games for TFC II in 2017, recording one goal and four assists while primarily playing at left wing back. He spent time with Toronto’s first-team for portions of the 2018 preseason, then, as the team were dealing with a raft of injuries and resting their starters in MLS matches due to their Concacaf Champions League run, got signed by the big club in April.

He’s started four games since, with his best performance coming in last Friday’s win against Orlando, Telfer’s first start at winger. He terrorized Lions right back Will Johnson in the first half, regularly beating him on the dribble to setup several excellent chances, including a point-blank look for forward Jordan Hamilton. He saved his best moment for the dying minutes, however, smashing an Auro cross out of the air and into the back of the net in the 87th minute to give Toronto a much-needed 2-1 victory.

He’s been understated with media since, preferring to let his performance speak for him.

“I was just happy to get the three points that we needed so badly,” he said. “It was just important for me to lift the spirits of the team and that was the only thing I was thinking at the time.”

It’s unlikely that Telfer will continue to consistently start once TFC return to health, but his contributions over the last month are a good illustration that, even though he got a late start, not every player needs to come through the prescribed path to make an impact as a pro.

“I quickly understood that most players who went to MLS in their first season were starting at a much younger age,” he said. “For me, I just wanted to give myself a chance to adapt quicker than others. I wanted to grasp the whole concept of the tactical game, the technical game and just try to work harder than everyone else so I could be at that same level as them when they would be 24. That’s what I try to do every day.”

York9 FC acquires Ryan Telfer on loan from Toronto FC
York9 FC Staff

York9 FC has acquired Ryan Telfer on a season-long loan from Toronto FC, bringing on the Canadian left winger for the inaugural 2019 Canadian Premier League season.

Telfer, 25, made 15 regular season appearances for the Reds in the 2018 MLS season, starting nine times.

Telfer featured for both the York University Lions and for League1 Ontario’s Vaughan Azzurri during his youth playing days, with the Mississauga native joining Toronto FC II in 2017 ahead of his graduation to the senior team in the following year.

He joins York9 FC to play under head coach Jimmy Brennan, who is excited about the prospect of adding the versatile left-sided player to his ranks.

“I think everyone knows who Ryan is and we think he’s a player who is going to help our squad,” Brennan said. “It’s going to be good for him, and good for our relationship with TFC. With Ryan coming here, he’s going to play a significant role with us and be a leader, on and off the pitch.

“He’s going to bring a different dimension to our team and we’re excited to work with Ryan and see him in a York9 jersey for this coming season.”

Brennan also affirmed that the cross-city connection between the two clubs would be fostered with this first MLS-to-CPL loan.

“Myself in particular, I have a good relationship with Toronto FC and the people upstairs,” Brennan said. “It’s the game of football – it’s about creating relationships and working with each other.

“This is an example where both of us are in each others’ backyards and this will be beneficial for us and for TFC.” said York9 President Preben Ganzhorn. “We’ve known Ryan for a long time and seen him developing and getting his games, but it’s an opportunity now for him to come to this side and get more games under his belt. We’re looking forward to it.”.
Title: Ryan Telfer soaks in 2nd pre-season after ‘out of the blue’ loan

Ryan Telfer soaks in 2nd pre-season after ‘out of the blue’ loan
By Armen Bedakian (canpl.ca)

For most of the Canadian Premier League’s crop of talented footballers, a league-wide foray to the Dominican Republic for pre-season training is a final step toward getting into tip-top shape ahead of kickoff on April 27.

But York9 FC’s Ryan Telfer is in a bit of a different situation.

See, while Telfer’s teammates get up to pace under the Caribbean sun, he’s getting back to work – back, indeed, for this is Telfer’s second pre-season in as many months, having already spent time in California from late January through February with his parent club Toronto FC.

Two full pre-season camps ought to get a player in the best shape of his life by our count.

And, as an aside, perhaps the York9 FC loanee is one of the more fortuitous players in the league, as far as enduring the Canadian winter is concerned.

“Some people might say so!” Telfer replied, when posed that very thought by CanPL.ca. “Around Christmas time for my vacation, I also went back home to Trinidad. I really skipped the winter cold … and I’m happy that I did – I guess I’m quite a lucky guy!”

When Telfer returned from California, he didn’t expect to be back in a pre-season camp for quite some time. But, with Toronto FC looking to loan out their left-winger for more meaningful minutes, the opportunity to start fresh was born when Carm Isacco – once his coach at York University – heard of a possible loan arrangement.

“It came out the blue,” Telfer said, of his loan move. “I knew something was in the works, so TFC came to me and said ‘We would like you to go on loan and get some minutes under your belt, so you can come back and be more of a main figure at TFC.’

“One of those loan options was Ottawa, and some of the other TFC guys went there (on loan) as well,” Telfer continued. “Then Carm found out, and he believed it would be a better fit for me to be at York9, stay close to home, and get some meaningful minutes as well.

“I totally agreed with that. It was a better fit for me. It’s been perfect.”

Reunited with Isacco, Telfer has been more than impressed with his new environment, too.

“The one big thing I can compare (between TFC and Y9) is the professionalism that I see in training and beyond with the club,” Telfer offered. “I’ve been honestly impressed so far, to see that a new team could have these professional standards that they’re upholding. I’m very pleased. From the first day I came in, I’ve been impressed.”

Part of that is working with head coach Jimmy Brennan, who Telfer said gives off the “mannerisms that make you feel almost like your coach is a teammate alongside you on the field.”

Another big factor? A new role in the middle, with plenty of room to roam.

“Here, I’m playing central midfield more in a free role when I can play on the wing if I need to,” Telfer revealed. “They want no restrictions on me, and want me to play with total freedom.”

Telfer may not have expected his 2019 season to turn out this way, but a saunter down south sets the stage for a historic moment he’s now eagerly anticipating – the inaugural match at Tim Hortons Field.

“It sits in my mind the entire time, knowing that you get to be on that roster of players walking out and making history for the first time with a professional, top-flight league in Canada,” Telfer concluded.

“It’s honestly mind-blowing. I’m so proud to be a part of what Canadian soccer will be, as a whole.”

No better feeling’: Y9’s Telfer on scoring 1st goal in CPL history
By Marty Thompson (canpl.ca)

It hadn’t hit Ryan Telfer until after the full-time whistle.

Makes sense, considering when and how his historic goal came about.

Just as supporters, players and coaches at Tim Hortons Field revelled in the euphoric state induced by the initial ceremonies and pomp surrounding the first match in the Canadian Premier League’s history, it happened.

York9 captain Manny Aparicio cut the Forge FC’s backline with a smart through pass, which Telfer wiggled through a sliding defender. That opened up a 1-v-1 opportunity with Forge goalkeeper Triston Henry. Telfer wouldn’t miss his mark.

In the 3rd minute, Ryan Telfer became the first goalscorer in CPL history.

“It’s a special feeling. Just to be known as the first goalscorer in this new league is something special to me,” Telfer told reporters after the match, having just seen messages from family, friends and supporters.

“It honestly hits inside. There’s no better feeling than having family members being proud of you.”

The 25-year-old referred to the goal “something done on the training pitch” following the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw after Kadell Thomas’ equalizer in the 78th minute.

“Realizing Manny had space and time to turn, there was only one thing on the mind. Manny knew exactly where I was gonna be.”

The on-loan Toronto FC midfielder, one of the biggest names listed to any CPL roster heading into the league’s first season, added the momentous goal loosened up his less professionally-experienced teammates.

“(The early goal) took a lot of pressure off the backs of players that are playing in their first professional game. It lets them relax and play free,” Telfer said.

Prepared to walk away from Tim Hortons Field honours even and history made, Telfer put the support of his family, specifically his dad, front and centre.

“He’s always been my main supporter from Day 1,” Telfer said. “Reading that text from after coming back to the locker room means a lot to me.”

From Telfer’s “Day 1” to the CPL’s “Day 1”.

A fitting end to an unforgettable day in Hamilton.

WATCH: Ryan Telfer comes on as a substitute in the 87th minute to provide the assist for the stoppage time equalizer in Toronto FC's 2-2 draw with Sporting Kansas City. That makes it two assists in two different leagues in the same week. Why is he not in our Gold Cup squad?

Good for him. The irony is that he was able to seize this chance because of the Gold Cup. Imagine what he might have been able to contribute at the GC.

Why not? Is he exploring other international options? Right now we're in dire need of strikers and he can seize an opportunity if he continues to keep scoring and develop with Toronto.

There was an article where he was interviewed and was asked how come he wasn't called up to the National Team and he said he was passed up each time he tried out for them by the TTFA so he moved to Canada and became a citizen there. If I manage to find the article I will post it up here.

It seems like we can't assess talent correctly. That's the same thing they did to Shaq Moore, now he's playing in Spain and for the US.

This right here is why he would decline getting called up to the Soca Warriors. Cause the blasted TTFA ignored him throughout his trials.

Allyuh should ask allyuh self, why should Telfer want to join TT. Our FF is dysfunctional. Our coach is "shit" according to many on this forum. We don't play friendlies to get playing time for marginal players and other players like Telfer and Greg. The FF dropped out of the Olympic qualifications and they not sending a team to the PanAm games. So why should Telfer and Greg want to be on this shit squad when they have a better chance playing with the Canucks? if DL is a shithong coach, he has nothing to offer them. Why would they want to play for a shithong coach?

I would dearly love to see these players on the squad. But when are they going to get a run. DJW has to organize games. We doh even play games at home any more. Almost all of our games are away, with the exception of the just past WC.

TFC’s Vanney impressed by ‘confident’ Telfer ahead of Leg 2 Impact tilt
By James Grossi (york9fc.canpl.ca)

There was an insightful bit of fun in the post-match press conference following York9 FC’s 2-1 win over FC Edmonton on July 14.

Ryan Telfer had just scored the game-winner for York9, latching onto a long-ball from Manny Aparicio before burning past the Edmonton defence to pick out the far-side of goal with a right-footed blast.

“Ryan’s right-foot, it’s not bad. A couple goals with that right foot now,” said York coach Jimmy Brennan, referring to Telfer’s blast against the Montreal Impact in the Canadian Championship as well as the decisive goal against the Eddies.

“He keeps telling me he’s left-footed, but keeps scoring with his right.”

Telfer interjected: “Better than yours, buddy.”

“It is better than mine,” admitted Brennan, breaking into a story. “(Ryan) said to me the other day, he goes, ‘Gaffer, your left-foot is not bad. You know the only difference between you and me?’

‘What’s that?’ asked Brennan. “‘He goes: I’ve got a right-foot.’

“Thanks Ryan.”

On loan from Toronto FC, Telfer has quickly become one of the stars of the Canadian Premier League, scoring two goals in league play, one the first-ever, and another two in the Voyageurs Cup, including York9’s first-ever home goal in the second leg of their series against AS Blainville.

He has a knack for the big moment, as his strike against Montreal evidenced – he scored in his professional debut in USL back in 2017. That back-and-forth with Brennan was a show of how the Mississauga-native has blossomed.

Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney, who watched that match against the Impact closely, was well aware of Telfer’s ambipedal abilities, too.

“I did (know he had a right-foot),” Vanney said with a smile.

“He’s developed a lot of confidence, and he knows he’s capable of not just competing, but excelling,” Vanney continued. “You can see his chest is up and he’s very comfortable, and that he can make a difference.

“That’s part of the purpose (of his loan): to gather that level of belief and feel that (confidence). It’s been a great experience for him and we’ll continue to keep an eye on him.”

Telfer has played in each of York’s 14 CPL matches thus far and all five cup games as well.

“At this point in my career, those minutes in this competitive league are very important for my development,” Telfer said.

“That’s one of the main reasons I came in the first place.”

The calibre of play in the CPL has not surprised him one bit, either.

“One of the first things I said was that a lot of people were going to be surprised at the level of this league and the quality of the players,” Telfer said, noting that for those people, it’s been ‘a pleasant surprise.’

With that decisive second leg against Montreal on Wednesday at Stade Saputo, and with the series tied 2-2, it is clear that Telfer’s loan thus far has borne fruit for both York9 and Toronto, opening the door for similar agreements in the future.

“It has to be an avenue that we continue to look at,” Vanney said. “This year we were all wondering what the CPL was going to look like, how it would fit in, and how could that be of good service to us, but also to those teams.

“We’re getting a better feel of that now as the season progresses.”

CPL clubs are expected to develop their own academy systems in the future – Edmonton has notably looked to theirs this season with the likes to Marcus Velado-Tsegaye, David Doe, and Prince Amanda joining the first team – but until those are fleshed out, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for clubs to make enquiries at the other professional clubs for burgeoning talents like Telfer that are in need of minutes.

A quick look at player resumes across the league sees stints, whether at the first team or academy level, with those other pro clubs – Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and Ottawa Fury FC – dotting every roster. There is tons of talent in Canada; the challenge has always been finding a place to flourish.

“It’s good to have a logjam,” said Vanney of the number of players itching for a step up. “At the end of the day, not all these players are going to come through. But if we can open up new pathways and new doors for them, the ones who don’t play for the first team can go on and have great careers too.

“That’s the way it works everywhere else around the world.”

Title: Ryan Telfer on his national team decision

Ryan Telfer on his national team decision
By John Jacques (Northern Tribune)

25-year-old midfielder Ryan Telfer has been a star player in the burgeoning Canadian Premier League: he’s scored four league goals (along with two in the Canadian Championship, including one against Montreal), has consistently looked dangerous, and even bagged an assist when he made a three-minute substitute appearance for his parent club, Toronto FC.

The form of the former York Lion has impressed TFC head coach Greg Vanney, with Telfer crediting his good MLS showing to his time spent in the Canadian Premier League. To that end, he’s been called the perfect prototype for what a loan in the Canadian Premier League can do for a player.

So, it shouldn’t be surprising to hear that there are rumours of a potential national team call-up in Ryan’s future, with the caveat that it’s not only one country looking at the winger. While Telfer is eligible to play for Canada, he could also play for Trinidad and Tobago. Recent rumours have indicated that he may get an invitation from the latter, where he spent some sixteen years growing up.

When asked by Vince Alvarado of the Nine Stripes Podcast about the rumours and if he could make a decision between representing Canada or Trinidad and Tobago when it comes to starting an international career, Telfer was honest in his answer: it’s a difficult decision.

"It's something I've been looking at myself. Every good player has represented their national country of choice, and it's an opportunity that's supposedly coming towards me. I have to make a certain choice on who I would like to represent. Honestly, at this point it's hard to say which one to go towards."

With Telfer having strong attachments to both countries, it’s absolutely fair for him to take his time with the decision – though neither Canada nor Trinidad and Tobago have made their efforts to court the player come in a highly public manner as of yet. With the Nations League matches coming up in the near future, however, that might be subject to change. Telfer knows it.

"Coming towards September, there's going to be Nations League games. You know, those are important games for both countries. To this point it whoever is willing to give me the opportunity. I don't want to step into that area of thinking, you know, I'm just going here just for show. I want to go there and make a difference. It's up to whoever is willing to let me do that. When the time comes, I'll have to make that choice."

It’s wise thinking from the 25-year-old: if he gets cap-tied to a country that only plays him a handful of times, it’s not the greatest career move when compared to representing a country that might give him opportunities to play consistently down the road.

Teal Bunbury once made a similar decision: eligible to play for both Canada and the United States, the Hamilton-born forward eventually decided on the Stars and Stripes. Given that he was the son of Canadian international Alex Bunbury (who wants to start a CPL club in Montreal), the move didn’t set well with Canadian fans.

York9 FC gaffer Jim Brennan, perhaps sensing that a Teal Bunbury-like situation may arise, chimed in and offered his support for Telfer:

"We've talked about it. At the end of the day, he's got to make a decision which is best for his career, so he'll take his time with it. Whichever one he chooses, we'll support because he deserves it. It's always nice to be recognized by two countries that want him to come play. It's an important decision he has to make, but whatever it is, as a club, star, and players, we'll support that decision that he makes."

Whichever way the decision goes, Telfer’s time spent playing in the Canadian Premier League helped put him on the radar for the national teams of both countries, and that’s exactly what the league is designed to do: give domestic players minutes on the pitch in a professional environment to help them showcase their skills.

In Telfer’s case, it evidently hasn’t taken long for him to showcase exactly what he brings to the table. To that end, the 25-year-old has some big decisions coming up in his future: aside of potentially declaring for a national team, his contract with Toronto FC is set to expire later on this year. It’ll be interesting to see if he renews with his MLS club, joins York9 FC on a free, or does something entirely different.

Whatever happens, the Canadian Premier League allowed him to flourish, and that can only help attract more players oh his caliber to the league in the future.

“Those names have been part of these selection discussions, and that’s exciting because in the past they’d be sitting on the bench somewhere and not anywhere near the [national team] conversation because they weren’t getting regular minutes and a chance to perform,” Herdman explained.

York9’s Telfer thankful for international chance offered by Trinidad and Tobago
By James Grossi (canpl.ca)

York9 FC’s Ryan Telfer has a knack for making history.

The 25-year-old attacker scored the first goal of the inaugural Canadian Premier League season on April 27 at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton. He bagged York9’s first goal at home as well, in the Canadian Championship against AS Blainville a month later, and there was his cracker against the Montreal Impact, the first goal scored by a CPL player against an MLS side.

Then he made a little more history this past international break. On Sept. 9, Telfer became the first CPL player to score an international goal when he tucked one in for Trinidad and Tobago in a 2-2 draw with Martinique at home in the Concacaf Nations League. (Ex-Forge FC loanee Emery Welshman scored for Guyana, but that was before the CPL season kicked off.)

Telfer is back with Y9 now, but he’s still buzzing from making his international debut for Trinidad.

“It was one heck of an experience,” Telfer told CanPL.ca. “Different in general from club football, the international level is more competitive, you felt that in both games.

“The intensity, what’s at stake for the fans, points towards qualifying for the Hex.”

Telfer made his debut for T&T a few days earlier away to Martinique, a 1-1 draw between the two nations, after only finding out he’d be suiting up the day of the match, having rushed to get his passport details sorted and join the squad. It was in the home fixture when the reality really sunk in.

“Getting to play your first game at the country you’re representing, being able to play in front of family and friends, who you grew up with for the longest while, was a truly honourable experience,” Telfer said. “Very humbling indeed to understand where you come from, the same streets you come from, being able to put the colours on your back and represent the country in total.

“I really enjoyed my time, being able to play in front of your home crowd. For (them) to be behind your back, supporting you every time you touch that ball, gave me so much energy.”

Before he could relish that moment, he was faced with a choice: Trinidad and Tobago or Canada? Telfer was born in Mississauga, Ont., but was raised in Trinidad, so when he received a call-up from T&T manager Dennis Lawrence for the country’s first two Nations League matches, Telfer had to decide to which country he would pledge his international allegiance. In the end, he accepted the invite from the Soca Warriors

His decision came down to two factors: a chance and the challenge.

“I was really looking for that one chance to express myself, to prove what I could bring to the table,” Telfer explained. “That was a chance Trinidad was willing to give.

“I really liked the idea of a challenge.”

He added: “Would I be able to help Trinidad and Tobago football to move further, help them to qualify for a Gold Cup, even qualify for the Hex? That’s something that I want to take seriously. I don’t really like being on the back burner, being able to see things happen. I’m one of those guys that wants to make a difference; that has to make a difference.

“That’s what my time at York9 this year has brought me, and what Toronto FC sent me here (on loan) for: being able to step up to the plate and prove yourself that you can change things for yourself. That’s what I really look forward to.”

Though mentioned by John Herdman as someone they were tracking heading into the latest Canadian national team camp, Telfer said there was no contact between himself and the coach.

“Just before I was called up to Trinidad, I was on the short list before Herdman picked his final squad, but not anything from him personally leading up to this,” Telfer said. “It made my choice pretty much made up knowing that. If I had the chance, maybe I would have (taken) that path.

“I was just looking for the one chance to showcase my skills and see what I could bring to the table. It came to me as who was willing to give me that platform first, I was going to jump up at it and it turned out this way.

“There was also a gut-feeling for me to lean towards this side. Honestly, I’m happy with the situation.”

Still, Telfer sees a bright future ahead for Canada.

“Everyone knows the talent Canada has right now,” Telfer offered. “Players playing in Europe: Alphonso Davies, (Junior) Hoilett for a few to name. Even guys getting called up from the CPL, like (Marco) Carducci. You’re starting to see all the Canadian talent flourish.”

He continued: “It’s really coming together under Herdman. He has a very good reputation and what he is doing so far you could see in the results.

“I honestly believe (Canada) will be able to do great things in the future.”

And he sees a parallel between Canada and Trinidad and Tobago.

“Canada took a step back from the international game for a long time, things haven’t been so great, but now the talent is starting to come back. Time was there weren’t a bunch of players on your radar,” Telfer said.

“Being able to play with these guys on the field, you understand these guys have talent, we have a pretty good shot at this.”

So, what if Trinidad ever plays Canada in the future and he has to line up against the Reds?

“That would be a pretty mouth-watering game,” Tefer said. “If that ever happens, I’ll really look forward to marking that one on my calendar.”
Title: York9’s Telfer learned to love the game in Trinidad and Tobago

York9’s Telfer learned to love the game in Trinidad and Tobago
By James Grossi (canpl.ca)

Ryan Telfer’s recent pair of appearances for Trinidad and Tobago in the CONCACAF Nations League was a homecoming of sorts for the York9 FC midfielder.

Telfer made history this past international break when he became the first CPL player to score an international goal when he tucked one in for Trinidad and Tobago in a 2-2 draw with Martinique at home. (Ex-Forge FC loanee Emery Welshman scored for Guyana, but that was before the CPL season kicked off.)

It was a special moment for Telfer, who was born in Canada, but was raised in Trinidad, living in the central region of the country, and playing his football, for club and school, in the capital of Port of Spain.

“I played for Skhy FC, a small club, but they base themselves as an academy,” Telfer told CanPL.ca. “The whole environment was more focused on helping players in their technical abilities and whatnot, that’s what they really focus on, that’s what really helped me in what my game is today. I also went to Fatima College, one of the most prestigious boys’ schools, secondary schools in Trinidad. I played there as well. They were one of the top teams.”

It was there he learned to love the game.

“In Trinidad and Tobago there is only two sports growing up: either cricket or football, and football was the major one,” Telfer stated. “My dad used to play soccer as well, he was always around (the game), always playing football.”

He added: “There was always a football around the house, gradually I started picking up the sport. And so, in time, having friends who played as well, just in the streets, that’s where I truly learned to love the game for what it is. I really enjoyed the times where you’re able to pick up a ball and you make friends so easily. And having family and friends supporting the game and playing, it made me want to play more.”

When Telfer was called into the national team by coach Dennis Lawrence, it was as though he was reuniting with old friends.

“I went to school with Sheldon Bateau, he was the captain, Adrian Foncette. Those two guys I went to school with at Fatima College,” Telfer explained. “(Kevin) Molino was always a name when I was growing up, one of the top prospect players. Joevin Jones, Leston Paul, names that were around the time when I was there, hearing about these guys, these guys are really good.

“Being able to share the field with them was really humbling experience.”

As a group, the Soca Warriors aim to bring their nation back to the highest echelons on the international game: The World Cup, just as some of the greats have in the past. The country’s lone appearance came in 2006 when it bowed out in the group stage.

“You aspired to be one of those guys. Shaka Hislop being able to go to the Premiership, as well as Dwight (Yorke) and his time at Manchester United, the things they did there. They represented the flag of Trinidad and Tobago,” Telfer said. “As a kid, looking at these guys play, you wanted to do that same thing, to put your country on the map as well.

“Coming from a small country in the Caribbean you don’t really hear much of guys going to Europe and making a name for themselves. I was part of that generation that really looked towards these guys, especially during World Cup qualification in 2006. That changed everything for a whole lot of people. They made the dream look believable, a future that everyone in my generation really looked forward to and that’s what we’re trying to pursue now.”

Having shared the spoils against Martinique, Trinidad will face Honduras in October and November in Group C of the Concacaf Nations League to determine who moves on to the finals in June 2020.

With seven goals in 26 league and cup appearances while on loan at York9 from TFC, Telfer credits the CPL for giving him the platform to excel: “That’s what has been flourishing for me at York9, realizing that potential and stepping up to the plate.”

His parents, both “born and bred” in Trinidad and Tobago, regularly watch him at York Lions Stadium, but were unable to be at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, though he did have a supporter’s section.

“They come to see me play football up here,” Telfer laughed. “I guess they didn’t see this coming, where I would be called to Trinidad and having to go back there. They missed the first game of me playing for Trinidad and Tobago.

“Those were my uncles, my brother; family and friends supporting me there.”

The one in the TFC shirt was his brother.

And as for that goal.

“You know me, hardly any celebration at all,” Telfer quipped. “There was a rebound in the box, it was a 50-50 chance, was of those where you had to get there first to have a sniff at goal. Fortunately, I got there first and it went in.”

Title: Ryan Telfer left unprotected in MLS Expansion Draft

Ryan Telfer left unprotected in MLS Expansion Draft
By John Jacques (Northern Tribune)

With both Nashville SC and Inter Miami CF preparing for their inaugural Major League Soccer seasons, another expansion draft is due to get underway next week. 19 MLS clubs will need to participate in the draft, which gives the two aforementioned expansion teams an opportunity to take players from the other MLS teams.

Clubs that lost a player to the expansion draft last year are exempt from this year’s draft. MLS Cup runners-up Toronto FC didn’t lose anyone to the draft last year, which means that TFC head coach Greg Vanney may potentially lose one of his players in this year’s edition of the expansion draft.

While he was allowed to protect a limited amount of players on the club roster, one of the club’s unprotected players will be a familiar name for Canadian Premier League fans: it’s none other than former York9 FC winger Ryan Telfer.

The 25-year-old winger had a stellar year in Canada’s only domestic professional league: he scored ten goals in 32 appearances across all competitions, including the league’s first-ever goal and, later on, a crucial one against the Montreal Impact in the Voyageurs Cup.

His quick attacking play and positional versatility eventually led to a call-up for Trinidad and Tobago, for whom he scored a goal for on his second appearance. He was also recalled to Toronto FC for a single match, contributing an assist in just three minutes on the pitch. All-in-all, he impressed head coach Greg Vanney as he racked up professional minutes on-loan in the CPL, though his future with the MLS side ultimately remains unclear.

With Toronto FC having no shortage of attacking midfield options through the likes of Jonathan Osorio, Nicolas Benezet, Alejandro Pozuelo, Marky Delgado, and Nick DeLeon, the club has opted to leave Telfer unprotected. Even midfielder Tsubasa Endoh, who started in the 2019 MLS Cup Final, was left unprotected. The club is likely gambling that neither Nashville nor Miami will want to use an international roster spot on the Japanese midfielder.

For US-based clubs, Telfer would similarly count as an international, as Canadian players only count as domestic players for Canadian MLS sides. It’s another calculated rationale behind leaving the 25-year-old unprotected.

Even if Telfer doesn’t get picked up by Nashville or Inter Miami, it’s not clear if the Mississauga-born winger lies in Vanney’s plans: York9 FC gaffer Jim Brennan said he would love to have Telfer back, but any potential move – whether it comes as a permanent transfer or another loan – may depend on whether Toronto FC renews Telfer’s contract, which is set to expire at the end of the calendar year.

Of course, Telfer isn’t the only Toronto FC player left unprotected: it wouldn’t be too surprising to see either expansion team pick up Justin Morrow, Laurent Ciman, or Tsubasa Endoh, so the fact that Telfer is more of a known product in Canada than the USA may benefit CPL fans hoping he’ll return to the league in the near future.

Still, Inter Miami hasn’t been shy about picking up players with high ceilings from north of the border: the club has already acquired David Norman Jr. from Vancouver (who spent a month on loan with Pacific FC), and also picked up Toronto FC midfielder Jay Chapman last week.

The 2019 MLS Expansion Draft will take place on Tuesday, November 19. Both Nashville SC and Inter Miami CF will be allowed to draft up to five players each, with the caveat that once a player is selected from an existing MLS team, no other player can be drawn from that club’s roster. So, if Nashville or Inter Miami picks up Morrow, it means that Telfer and the rest of the unprotected TFC players would be exempt from the rest of the draft.

For what it’s worth, it seems like Telfer prefers to stay close to home: he almost went on loan to the now-defunct Ottawa Fury earlier this year, but York9 FC assistant head coach Carmine Isacco – who coached him through his years at York University – ultimately convinced Telfer that a loan closer to home would be a better fit for him.

Interestingly, FC Cincinnati’s Blake Smith is neither on the MLS side’s roster nor on the club’s unprotected list. Despite being placed on waivers by FC Cincinnati earlier this year, he was still loaned to Pacific FC for the duration of the inaugural season. Smith’s future in the MLS remains unclear, and when asked if a potential return to the Canadian Premier League was on the cards, he simply said that one never know what the future holds.

Trinidad and Tobago Senior team forward Ryan Telfer has signed with Cyprus First Division club, Nea Salamis Famagusta FC until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Telfer previous played with Canadian clubs Toroto FC and York 9 FC and is now excited about joining the European ranks.

“Fully excited to make this move to Nea Salamis. It’s always be on the books to make move across to Europe, to be able to play for a First Division club and experience European football. It just so happened that the opportunity has come at the right time after having a pretty good season with York 9 on loan from Toronto FC,” Telfer told TTFA Media on Wednesday.

“Upon Toronto FC fully releasing me, it opened a bunch of options. It then became apparent that European clubs were interested. I’m really excited to see how well I can fare against top opposition in Europe. I’m very eager to play with this team.”

Telfer who made his debut against Martinique last year is anticipating the year ahead with the National team with international friendlies coming up in March ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup playoffs in June against either Barbados or Guyana.

“Having this experience out here can possibly prepare me for bigger things with the national team. Seeing that we have a Gold Cup to qualify for and there is still some World Cup hopes, it’s a lot to look forward to this year and I’m definitely eager to come back and play for the national team,” Telfer added.

The 25-year-old Telfer, a former Fatima College player, was signed by Toronto FC in 2018 before going on loan to York 9 where he scored 8 goals in some 26 appearances. He has three goals in six appearances for T&T.

Nea Salamis are currently sixth on the league table. The club is named after the ancient city of Cyprus, Salamis or Salamina, which is located nearby modern Famagusta.

The Nine Stripes have moved swiftly to secure the return of former loanee Ryan Telfer from Nea Salamina Famagusta in Cyprus.

Following a successful spell with York9 FC last year, the winger left Toronto FC at the end of the season after they declined to pick up his option for 2020.

Fresh from eight goals in 26 games in the inaugural season of the Canadian Premier League – where he netted the first goal in league history three minutes into the opener against Forge FC at Tim Hortons Field last April – he took up a short-term contract offer to play in the Cypriot First Division.

The versatile attacker also claimed the honour of being the first person to score for a CPL team against Major League Soccer opposition when he equalized against the Montreal Impact in the Canadian Championship.

Having featured for both York University Lions and League1 Ontario’s Vaughan Azzurri, he returned to the region last March after playing in 16 MLS regular-season games for Toronto FC, as well as 38 times for Toronto FC II.

He has been capped six times by Trinidad and Tobago, with his first coming in September 2019. By scoring in only his second appearance, against Martinique in the CONCACAF Nations League, the 26-year-old from Mississauga, ON, also added the accolade of the first international goal scored by a CPL player to his resume.

Telfer said: “York has always been a second home to me and it feels good to be back. To the fans and club, I’ve got unfinished business here.”

Managing consultant Angus McNab added: “We are delighted to welcome Ryan back to the club. We have had to be a little patient to get this deal completed, but now that it is, we’re all looking forward to the prospect of him rejoining the group. To be able to add a player of Ryan’s calibre to our attacking options only enhances how competitive we expect to be when we resume.”

“He will always be a hugely important figure for both York9 FC and the CPL after scoring such significant firsts. After the sale of Emilio [Estevez], it was important to ensure we brought in a top-quality replacement, and with Ryan, we have done that.”

York9 FC’s Ryan Telfer: Athletes need to speak up about racial inequality
yorke9fc.canpl.ca

Should pro athletes speak out about social issues?

It’s an interesting debate that has taken place the last few years as more and more sports personalities use their celebrity to shed light on such important topics as racial inequality.

The question of whether athletes should enter the public forum has come to the forefront again, as protests have been staged around the world in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death at the hands of police in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

As the Black Lives Matter movement has gained momentum, stars from sports leagues all across the world have taken advantage of their platforms to offer their thoughts on issues of race and white privilege.

Sports fans appear to be divided into two camps. On the one hand, they applaud the bravery of their favourite athlete in taking a public stand. Others feel they should keep quiet, and “just stick to sports.”

The argument that athletes should shut up and just stick to sports is “total tomfoolery,” according to York9 FC winger Ryan Telfer.

“If you look at celebrities, musicians, actors, and those who are highly-regarded in the community, they have a big influence on the people who follow them. It’s the same thing for athletes. I know the thing with sports is that some people think it should take a neutral stance, that sports should not be divided up in terms of what people believe in. For me, in terms of the sporting community, athletes should use their platform to shed light on (societal issues),” Telfer told CanPL.ca.

“I’m sure the (most famous) athletes in the world are getting advice from people close to them not to take a stand because you never know how it might come out and be interpreted. But they shouldn’t be afraid to speak out.”

Telfer, a 26-year-old from Mississauga who grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, explained that as a person of colour in Canada he sometimes feels like “an outsider.”

“Where I’m from in the Caribbean, you don’t see that kind of (racism) on a daily basis. Not to say it doesn’t exist where I’m from; it does, but not to the point where it’s sometimes so in your face,” Telfer said.

“I’ve always grown up thinking that there’s some good in people, and I’ve always been taught to believe in the equality of people, and not focus on whatever their bad parts are.”

He later added: “I have to admit in my time that I’ve been called names … It’s tough to see how things have escalated to this point just because people look different.”

As someone who is has been on the receiving end of racist remarks, Telfer feels it is important to give his to “support to people who face injustice their entire lives.”

But he also stressed that the issue of racism extends far beyond the United States and Canada – that people have to look beyond their local communities.

“As much as things need to be talked about (the situation in the U.S.) with the police, I always think about the big picture. Even though America is a first-world country and people deal with racial injustice, you have to think about it globally. If you look at different areas around the world – over in Africa, most people there are black but there’s still racial injustice there,” Telfer offered.

“This goes beyond the issue of race and colour. … People have to stand up for themselves. Communities need to come together, not just black or Asian communities or white communities – everybody has to come together as human beings and stand up for what is right.”

WATCH: Ryan Telfer reflects on World Cup qualifying, the compressed schedule and its challenges. Telfer scored against Guyana in the opening match of the 2022 qualification campaign.

https://youtube.com/v/PPVJpTZclaE

We have to rest and recover, says national striker Ryan Telfer.
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday).

NATIONAL men's football team forward Ryan Telfer believes the two-month window ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s next FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bahamas, on June 5, should provide the men’s team with ample time to rest, recover and positively reflect on their opening two results against Guyana and Puerto Rico.

On March 25, the national team recorded a winning-start to their Concacaf World Cup qualifier campaign by defeating Guyana 3-0 at the Estadio Panamericano, San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. Three days later, they held on to a 1-1 result against hosts Puerto Rico at the Mayaguez Athletics Stadium, Mayaguez.

With Bahamas and St Kitts and Nevis (June 8th) next in line to face the T&T team in the first round of qualifying, Telfer wants his teammates and coaching staff to use the coming weeks to recuperate and better prepare for the forthcoming matches.

Telfer said, “It’s a good thing that it’s (next qualifier) not too close and not too far away. This game (Puerto Rico) will still be fresh in our minds and we will like to make amends in the next round of games. We would have a lot of time to repair and look at the teams we’re going to play.

“Having guys go back to their clubs and carrying out playing games and further training will help and boost the squad entirely. It’s just the amount of time we would have to repair is something good for us,” said Telfer.

The 27-year old got on the scoresheet against Guyana by netting T&T’s third goal in the 44th minute. He also started against Puerto Rico before he was replaced by Willis Plaza in the 69th minute.

One of the major takeaways for Telfer after the Puerto Rico fixture was not underestimating opponents for World Cup qualifiers. According to him, no matter the size of country, population and/or what sporting facilities are at their dispersal, opponents must not be taken for granted.

“It didn’t go the way we expected it to go. The team and everyone felt that we fell a little bit short in getting the three points. Looking at it from another perspective is that it’s an away game and we got away with a point. It shows a lot of things that we need to work on off the training pitch,” he added.

Telfer also pointed out that travelling to Puerto Rico on March 26, the day after the Guyana clash, may have also taken a toll on the squad. Their hectic schedule of back-to-back matches only allowed for two days of training prior to the Puerto Rico match.

“I, and some of the guys believe that, we could have prepared much better. With a short period of time playing Guyana two days prior. That space of recovery and regrouping and trying to get a sheet (team) for looking towards the Puerto Rico game was a very small amount of time.

“I believe if we had more time, a day or two days extra, a lot of things could have been put in place for what we wanted to do. But this is World Cup qualifiers and these things happen. It’s just for the team and coaching staff to be on one page and be able to have a game plan from the get-go,” Telfer added.

He, however, lauded coach Terry Fenwick’s inclusion of more experienced players to the squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

Against USA on January 31, in T&T’s first international friendly in over a year, Fenwick fielded a much younger outfit and was handed a 7-0 whipping. Several seasoned players were unavailable for the friendly and Fenwick opted to give a few debutants and inexperienced players a chance.

But with the addition of more experienced players such as captain Khaleem Hyland, Levi Garcia, Joevin Jones, Sheldon Bateau and Aubrey David to the squad, T&T displayed better composure on the pitch.

“Having a makeshift squad to play against the USA compared to a bunch of seasoned players to come back and play these World Cup qualifiers," Telfer said. "That alone is a huge difference on things off and on the pitch.

“It was better in Puerto Rico because we have guys who played Nations League games back in 2019. It was almost the same core group of players with just a few exceptions. Just from the experience alone, a couple years ago, really helps towards something as huge as World Cup qualifiers,” he added.

History-maker: Breaking down Ryan Telfer’s CPL career so far
By Martin Thompson (canpl.ca)

Ryan Telfer is back in the CPL – what history will he make next?

The 27-year-old signed for Atlético Ottawa this week after leaving York United last Fall. Telfer, you may recall, has had quite a successful career at the CPL level, making 39 appearances for York (then York9 FC) across two seasons, scoring ten goals and adding three assists.

Telfer, a native of Mississauga, Ont., has quietly racked up quite a list of accomplishments through the first two CPL seasons, going all the way back before the league’s inaugural game on April 27, 2019.

Here’s what the CPL’s history-maker has managed to accomplish so far – with his next chapter in Ottawa coming up next.

First MLS-to-CPL loan
Telfer became the first player loaned to the CPL from an MLS club in March of 2019. Swapping Toronto FC for the Nine Stripes, Telfer had returned to York Lions Stadium where he starred for York University before featuring for Vaughan Azzurri of League1 Ontario and, eventually, climbing to TFC through their second team, where he featured 38 times in 2017 and 2018.

It was a meteoric climb through the ranks in the Greater Toronto Area which culminated in a once-in-a-lifetime moment just down the road in Hamilton.

First goal in CPL history
You remember this one, yeah?

Just as supporters, players, and coaches at Tim Hortons Field revelled in the euphoric state induced by the initial ceremonies and pomp surrounding the first match in the Canadian Premier League’s history, it happened.

York9 captain Manny Aparicio cut Forge FC’s backline with a smart through pass, which Telfer wiggled through a sliding defender. That opened up a 1-v-1 opportunity with Forge goalkeeper Triston Henry. Telfer wouldn’t miss his mark and his chance to be a name synonymous with the CPL forever.

“It’s a special feeling. Just to be known as the first goalscorer in this new league is something special to me,” Telfer told reporters after the match, having just seen messages from family, friends and supporters. “It honestly hits inside. There’s no better feeling than having family members being proud of you.”

First goalscorer at York Lions Stadium
Telfer’s next history-making moment came just under a month later when the Nine Stripes faced AS Blainville in the Canadian Championship.

After a scoreless first leg in Quebec, Telfer and co. returned for a pseudo-home opener against the PLSQ side. Difficulties in front of goal plagued Jimmy Brennan’s group until the 70th minute when Simon Adjei, unlucky not to score himself, thumped a ball towards the keeper, who parried the opportunity up for a diving Telfer.

While a dry run for their CPL home opener against Forge that weekend, you couldn’t ignore Telfer notching yet another record.

First goalscorer against an MLS opponent
In a gritty, all-out affair with the Montreal Impact (now CF Montreal) at York Lions Stadium, Telfer was the Nine Stripes player to step up when it mattered with a rocket of a second-half shot at York Lions Stadium.

At a field he was used to, from his time at York University, against an MLS opponent he had previously faced, the occasion seemed to Telfer’s level in an unexplainable way. Perhaps it was the confidence that bred from both instances.

First international goal in CPL history
Telfer’s play in 2019 quickly caught the attention of Trinidad and Tobago – not before Canadian men’s boss John Herdman showed interest – and soon enough he had jetted off to the Caribbean to represent the Soca Warriors.

In his second international match against Martinique, Telfer found the back of the net with a mad scramble. Oddly similar to his last international marker which, you guessed it, has set another record…

Most international goals by an active CPLer
Telfer’s four goals for the country while a CPLer is a record among players active in the league. His last came in March against Guyana in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying when he, uh, capitalized on an error for the goalkeeper.

The 27-year-old has made eight appearances for Trinidad and Tobago and is set to play a big part in their World Cup qualifying campaign which will continue in June with crucial tilts against the Bahamas and Saint Kitts and Nevis – the latter of which could be a group decider. Perhaps a chance to add to his tally?

Telfer settling at Columbus.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago winger Ryan Telfer is slowly adjusting to his new environment after making the switch to Columbus Crew 2 on an MLS NEXT Pro professional contract last month.

Telfer joins Crew 2 after spending the 2021 season with Atletico Ottawa of the Canadian Premier League. The former Toronto FC player is currently recovering from an injury sustained in the 1-1 draw with Guyana in the Courts Caribbean Classic fixture in Port of Spain last month but is keeping a keen eye on T&T’s upcoming Concacaf Nations League assignment which begins away to Nicaragua on June 3.

We caught up with him today.

Q: Ryan, can you tell us about the past few weeks at your new club since you completed the recent move.

RT: It as been a quiet few weeks since my move here. I have been recovering from an injury since the Guyana friendly so I’m focusing on being able to get back on the field. This has been my main priority.

Q: What is it like at the new club? New environment, teammates, new city.

RT: It’s lways great to embrace a new club, environment and city. I have been welcomed with open arms into this organization and it’s been excellent so far. The club and its facilities with its staff are world class. It’s great having a mixture of new and old teammates on the team and it’s been going pretty well under the new coaching staff here. I haven’t been able to explore Columbus yet but I’ll be able to soon once the summer months arrive.

Q: Reflecting on the last coming together of the national team, what were the major points for you? Team spirit, fight, other aspects on and off the pitch.

RT: Team chemistry and identity are some of the major points that we have been working on together as a team. With every camp, we’ve been improving as a group in the way we play and carry about ourselves on the field. We want to be that team that is stubborn to play against while being able to express ourselves out there. We’ve also never had all our players available for selection so I look forward to that moment when it happens.

Q:What are your thoughts on the draw for the Nations League? How do you assess the Group?

RT: The Concacaf Nations League is gonna be an exciting one for us. There are teams who have been improving their football pedigree as well as our so called ‘jumbie’ team that caused a wreck in our World Cup hopes (Bahamas). Either way, it has been engraved in us that we don’t cater or care who we play, our job is to bring Trinidad and Tobago football back to where it belongs. With that being said these aren’t easy games and there is no such thing as an easy team in international football so the focus will be on us and how we want to establish ourselves out there.

Q: Talk about the importance of us starting the campaign well in June with sights set on automatic qualification for Gold Cup 2023.

RT: It’s very important to start well in any competition that you are in. Being able to get those first set of points can pave the way for the rest of the group stage. We want to be that team that determines their own fate at the end of it all.

Q: How much are you anticipating June and the four matches back to back?

RT: As the international break slowly approaches, it’s something I always look forward to as a national team player. And especially under these new circumstances under the Nations League banner, these matches are worth something and it makes it much more exhilarating to be a part of it. Hopefully I’m fit enough to participate.

TTFA Media: Thanks for the time Ryan. Hope to see you again soon.

T&T will face Nicaragua in Managua on Friday June 3 in its opening CNL fixture. They then host Bahamas at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on June 6 before traveling to St Vincent/Grenadines to play on June 10th before hosting the Vincentians in Port of Spain on June 13th.

From Maple Fields to International Dreams: The Inspiring Journey of Ryan Telfer
By Matteo Cozzoli (miamifc.com)

In the world of professional football, some players rise through the ranks effortlessly, while others embark on a challenging and winding path before finding their footing. One such player who epitomizes resilience and determination is Ryan Telfer, a name that has been making headlines with his recent performances for Miami FC.

Telfer’s love for the beautiful game was nurtured on the youth fields of Mississauga, Canada, where he honed his skills and developed a passion for the sport. His perseverance paid off when he earned a scholarship to attend York University in Toronto. During his time at the university, Telfer’s performances caught the attention of coaches and scouts, providing him with an opportunity to showcase his abilities at a higher level.

In 2018, Telfer’s dream of becoming a professional footballer materialized when he signed with Toronto FC, a Major League Soccer (MLS) club. It was a breakthrough moment for the then-24-year-old, as he donned the iconic red jersey and made his professional debut. His journey from the local leagues to the MLS served as an inspiration to many upcoming players.

Despite showing glimpses of his talent in the MLS, Telfer faced challenges in securing a regular spot in the starting lineup. The fiercely competitive nature of the league demanded consistent top-notch performances, and Telfer found himself seeking opportunities to further develop his skills and gain valuable experience.

His determination to succeed led him to Ottawa, where he joined Ottawa Fury FC on loan in 2018. Telfer’s stint with Ottawa proved fruitful as he became a key player for the club, impressing with his goal-scoring abilities and dynamic attacking style. His time with Ottawa Fury FC allowed him to refine his game and prove his worth on the professional stage.

In 2019, Telfer’s journey took an unexpected yet exciting turn when he signed with York9 FC, a Canadian Premier League (CPL) club. Returning to his roots, Telfer embraced the opportunity to play in Canada’s newly established professional league and became an integral part of York9 FC’s squad. His performances in the CPL earned him accolades and the admiration of fans across the country.

In September of 2019 Telfer was first called to the Trinidad and Tobago National Team and has since made nine appearances. He has added a respectable four goals during that time, and will be a player to look out for in future fixtures.

In 2021, Telfer’s talents caught the eye of Miami FC, and he made the move to the United States to join the club in the USL Championship. Once again, Telfer faced the challenge of adapting to a new team and league, but his resilience and adaptability shone through. In his new surroundings, he quickly established himself as a key player, becoming a fan favorite with his electrifying performances and crucial goals.

Fast forward to the present, and Ryan Telfer finds himself in the prime of his career. His remarkable journey from the local fields of Mississauga to competing at the professional level across different countries is a testament to his unwavering determination and passion for the sport. Telfer’s story serves as an inspiration to all aspiring footballers, showcasing that hard work, perseverance, and the refusal to give up can lead to success, even in the face of adversity.

“You have to love everything about it,” said Telfer when asked how he stays mentally prepared and focused, “the preparation, the work, and the success. You have to be motivated to get better every single day.”

As he continues to excel for Miami FC, the football world watches with anticipation, wondering what other heights this tenacious journeyman can reach. Ryan Telfer’s name may not have graced the biggest headlines in football, but his story is one that deserves recognition as a testament to the unyielding spirit of an athlete on a path less traveled.

Warrior Profile: Ryan Telfer – Focused on the job at hand for T&T
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

Ryan Telfer’s omission from Fatima College’s 2010-2011 BG T&T Secondary Schools’ Football League squad only motivated him to work harder.

Despite helping the school’s U14 and U16 teams dominate their respective divisions during his time there (2006-2011), the 29-year-old right-winger was overlooked by then coach Huston “Baba” Charles for a senior team pick in his final year.

Undeterred, and brimming with talent, Telfer travelled to Canada, went to York University in Toronto and began competing with the university team. He impressed, and in 2017, transferred to Toronto FC’s second team for an entire season.

In 2018, he played three games with the club’s second team, and was then called up to play for the first team in Major League Soccer (MLS), in his first pro contract. He found it tough to secure a regular spot in the starting 11, and joined Ottawa Fury FC on loan later that year.

For the 2019 season, he signed with York9 FC, and played in the newly established Canadian Premier League.

His attacking style was recognised by then Trinidad and Tobago coach and 2006 World Cup player Dennis Lawrence, and Telfer earned his first senior national call-up.

He made his debut against Martinique in the Concacaf Nations League and helped win a penalty for T&T to earn a draw. Since then, he’s made 11 appearances and scored five.

Following a successful season with York9 FC that year, Telfer moved to Cyprus to play for Nea Salamina Famagusta. His spell there was short-lived and he returned to Canada, to rejoin the renamed York United.

Over the next two years, Telfer represented Canadian club Atletico Ottawa in 2021, then moved to Columbus Crew II to play in the MLS Next Pro, which they won in 2022.

Now he plays for Miami FC in the United Soccer League. They’re currently eighth in the playoffs and need a win from their final match against Sacramento FC on Saturday to make it in.

On Friday night, however, Telfer suits up in red, white and black for T&T’s Concacaf Nations League A test against Guatemala at Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, from 9pm.

“I’m missing the last game (Miami FC) of the season, which could ultimately decide our fate, whether we’ll have a post-season (competition) or not.

"But it’s about getting your priorities right. You have to weigh your options. We (T&T) just need one win to put us into the knockout rounds, and it’s important for the country and younger generation of footballers. We don’t get the opportunity every year to qualify for a prestigious competition like Copa America. I have faith in my clubmates and the national team,” he said.

Telfer is one of six foreign-based players brought in for Friday’s clash and Tuesday’s away test against Curacao.

T&T won their two opening group A matches against Curacao and El Salvador, and one win from either upcoming match, guarantees them a spot in the quarter-finals.

Against the latter, Telfer scored in the 22nd minute to level the match 1-1, which spurred on the Angus Eve-led unit to a nail-biting 3-2 victory.

Like his coach, Telfer wants more support from local fans on Friday.

“Nothing changed from since we were last here, about a month ago (against Curacao at Hasely Crawford Stadium) playing at home. If we (are) honest with ourselves and the surroundings, no one actually believes in us to make it to the knockout round, despite even having six points at this stage. People still believe Guatemala to be the better team and whatnot,” he said.

When asked how he plans to handle the match mentally, Telfer replied, “It’s just the focus, being humble and knowing what we’re worth and what we can accomplish if we put our heads together.

“That’s the mindset: nothing to be worried about. God will decide your fate at the end of the day, as he did last month. We have to keep focused on the task at hand, keep out the noise.”

On his goal against El Salvador, he said, “It was a great feeling. (It) came from all of us, especially the back line, for keeping us in the game for the most part. We just needed that one chance or glimpse of home to get going, and it just so happened to be me.

“From that point, the goal made everyone believe that nothing is impossible.

"Sometimes players get scared going into those games, especially the younger guys, the atmosphere sometimes get to them, and it just helps them realise that they have talent too.”

His dream for T&T football is to see the national team “flourish,” whether it’s qualifying for the World Cup or any major tournament, to lifting any trophy or cup.

“We’re giving it our all and hopefully we’d get a chance to play in the expanded FIFA World Cup in future years.

"You just want to give hope for younger generations here in T&T. Let them know they will be wearing my jersey one day.”

Telfer showered praise on domestic football club Skhy FC for playing an integral role in crafting him into the player he is today. He also acknowledged York University coach Carmine Isacco for giving him the opportunity to express himself on the pitch, a move which propelled his football career at a critical stage.

We expect Ryan to help us stretch the game and bring his ability on the ball this season.”

Telfer is a household name in the Canadian Premier League, having played from 2019 to 2021 with York United and Atlético Ottawa. He scored the first goal in CPL history on April 27, 2019, in the league’s inaugural match between York and Forge FC. In 49 league matches, Telfer has scored 11 goals.
