Title: Teenaged OpenerS (TT)
Post by: vb on May 17, 2017, 08:16:10 AM
Name nineTT openers who made their fist Class debut for TT whilst still teenagers.

I am not sure if Andy Ganteaume was 19 or 20 so I have excluded him.

NOT TALL MAN.

Just to be clear, did the seven openers make their debut as openers? For example, Andy Ganteaume eventually became an opener, but he started out batting lower down the order.

Yes, everybody made their debuts as openers. They were selected based on their performances as Openers.

Ganteaume is not  on the list.

Deeks, Gabriel is one. Six eight more to go.  ;D

Ganga yes. Ganga persad no. but thanks. You made me think of two others at that time. Anil Balliram. He would have made his debut just before or after his 20th birthday in 1994. I am not sure so won't give is name.

Just realized there is another so make it ten in total.

Ganga's debut was in the 1997 Red Stripe Cup vs Guyana which was played from February 21-24. CLICK HERE (http://static.espncricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1996-97/WI_LOCAL/RSC/T+T_GUY_RSC_21-24FEB1997.html) for the scorecard, which shows that he debuted as a middle order batsman.

Balliram made his debut in the 1994 Red Stripe Cup vs Windward Islands from January 7–10, when he was aged 19 years, 10 months, 12 days. The scorecard (http://static.espncricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1993-94/WI_LOCAL/RSC/WWD_T+T_RSC_07-10JAN1994.html) shows him opening the batting with Kenneth Williams, who made his first class debut at 15 years old, but not as an opener.

Ok. So balliram is in de mix.
Ganga as well because he was a specialist opener who debuted for TT as opposed to a middle order batsman who opened.
You know it never occured to me to watch the date of the match to figure out their age. SMH

That match was played February 10-12, 1989 and Ragoonath was born on March 22, 1968. So he was exactly 20 years, 10 months, 20 days when he made his debut.

hah ha  :D :D. I only remember Richard Gabriel. We get half-day from school to see TT in Shell shield. Gabriel, Bernard Julien and Sheldon Gomes were the school boys on the team. He was ok. Did not make a big score. Bernard of course was superb at bowling. Sheldon was a disappointment. He made quite a few ducks.

VB, I can't remember Gabriel score in that first game. He may as well made the fifty, but over all we(Trinis) at that time was expecting him to make the WI Test team. That was in the early 70s. Test cricket was the benchmark.  He eventually made the ODI in the 80s. Bernard was so mature for his age at that time. Sheldon was disappointing with the bat. Nice guy and superb fielder, such that he was selected 12th man on 2 occasions I think.
