Noreiga Named CAA Defender of the Year
Manneh and McKnight garner All-CAA Second Team Honors

Nov. 10, 2005

Fairfax, Va.--Senior Anthony Noreiga (D; San Fernando, Trinidad) became the first men's soccer player in George Mason history to be named Colonial Athletic Association Defender of the Year, which was voted on by the league's head coaches and announced Thursday evening at the men's soccer banquet in Norfolk, Va. Seniors Karim Manneh (Banjul, Gambia) and Teba McKnight (Couva, Trinidad) also collected conference accolades as both forwards were named to the All-CAA Second Team.

Noreiga anchored a Patriot defense that recorded five shutouts this season, including four in CAA play. Mason limited seven of the 11 conference foes to one goal or less. A three-year starter, Noreiga scored his fourth career goal and his lone goal of the 2005 campaign in Mason's season-opening 3-2 win at Liberty (Sept. 2). The Trinidad native was named to the adidas/Brown Classic All-Tournament Team on Sept. 11 in Providence, R.I. and this marks Noreiga's first postseason conference honor in his three-year career at Mason.

Manneh played in 17 of Mason's 18 games this season and finished the year tied in first among his teammates with four goals and second in points with nine. One of Manneh's four goals this season was when he scored the overtime goal to propel Mason to a 1-0 win over Penn State on Sept. 24, 2005. Manneh played wo seasons with the Patriots, saw action in 37 games and was in the starting line-up in 30 of those contests.

McKnight started every game during the 2005 campaign and finished first among Patriots in points (12), as well as assists (4) and tied Manneh in goals with four. McKnight scored a goal and dished out an assist to help lead Mason to a 3-2 victory over Drexel (Oct. 23) and also netted two goals in the Patriots 3-1 win over La Salle (Sept.20). Along with Noreiga, McKnight was named to the adidas/Brown Classic All-Tournament Team on Sept. 11, 2005. This marks McKnight's second-straight All-CAA Second Team nod as the senior forward was named to this team in 2004.

Telesford Named To Big South Men’s Soccer All-Conference First Team; Four Flames Named to Second Team

Liberty Flame Osei Telesford was named to the Big South All-Conference first team, the league announced Wednesday evening. The announcements were made at the conference’s annual men’s soccer awards banquet, held at the Radisson in High Point, N.C.

The Flames had one member on the first team and four on the second. Senior midfielder Telesford (San Juan, Trinidad) was selected to the first team, while junior forward Adrian Bumbut (Zalau, Romania), senior defender Jonathan Burklo (Tampa, Fla.), sophomore midfielder Kyle Cupid (Edinburgh, Trinidad), and Michael Ward (Seffner, Fla.) were named to the second-team all-conference squad. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Mahan (Waterford, Mich.) was also Liberty’s representative on the Big South’s All-Academic Team.

Telesford was named to the Big South All-Conference first team for the second time in his career. He was selected to the conference's first team in 2003 as a defender and in 2004, he was named to the Big South's second team. This season, Telesford moved to the midfield where he is second on the Flames in scoring with 17 points and tied for second with six goals.

Birmingham-Southern midfielder Thimo Langner and Panthers’ head coach Preston Goldfarb were voted the 2005 Big South Men’s Soccer Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. In addition, Winthrop goalkeeper Patrick Mitrovich was selected as Freshman of the Year, while Radford’s Patrick Colas was tabbed the Big South’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the sports information directors.

Langner led the Panthers to their second-straight Big South regular-season championship with 11 goals and 29 points. He currently ranks No. 10 in the country averaging 1.93 points per game and is 16th in Division I with 0.39 goals per game. He also ranks third in the League in goals, assists (7) and points. Langner finished with five first place votes and 15 points, edging out Winthrop’s Saidi Isaac by one point (six first place votes).

Goldfarb earns his first Big South Coach of the Year honor, leading his Panthers to their second-straight No. 1 seed in the Big South Men’s Soccer Tournament. The Panthers officially began playing soccer in the Big South in 2003 and have won two out of three Big South regular-season championships in its young membership.

The awards banquet serves as the kickoff for the 2005 Men’s Soccer Championship. The first round begins Thursday in High Point, N.C., with four games scheduled throughout the day on the campus of High Point University. Liberty, the championship’s fourth seed, opens the afternoon by squaring off with Winthrop, the fifth seed. The semifinals will be played Friday beginning at 4 p.m., while the title match is slated for Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
