Bundesliga Weekly

Uncertainty interfering with play

There could have been plenty of talking points in Germany following the Bundesliga's ninth round of games at the weekend. Bayern Munich's continuing, and almost ridiculous, dominance, for instance, or the sudden insurgence of the cellar dwellers, as the bottom three teams all won away from home. Instead, almost everyone - from coaches to pundits like Franz Beckenbauer to the viewers of Werder Bremen announcer Arnd Zeigler's cult call-in show on regional television - were debating one particular aspect of the rulebook.

It wasn't just one game and one crucial situation that triggered the discussion but a series that stretched over the whole weekend. On Friday evening, reigning league champions Borussia Dortmund underlined their recent upswing in form by defeating a strong Werder side 2-0 in Bremen despite finishing the game with ten men. The result wasn't undeserved, as Dortmund displayed an uncharacteristic efficiency coupled with a great fighting spirit, and even Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf later said his players lacked determination on the night and couldn't complain about the outcome.

What he did complain about, though, was inconsistent refereeing. The visitors' second goal came from a corner Werder's defence couldn't properly clear. As Dortmund defender Mats Hummels knocked the ball back into the goalmouth, his team-mate Patrick Owomoyela was onside and proceeded to put the ball away from close range. But another Dortmund player, striker Robert Lewandowski, had been clearly offside, standing in the six-yard box.

Obviously, the referee had felt that Lewandowski wasn't interfering with play - had been in a so-called "passive offside" position - and thus allowed the goal to stand. But Schaaf pointed out that the German FA's referees had visited the clubs before the season to inform players and coaches that passive offside would be penalised much more often in the future. This new directive was the result of a seminar held in May, known as the FIFA Referee Assistance Program, meant to make this particular refereeing decision less of a judgment call.

But the remainder of the Bundesliga weekend would prove that passive offside is now even more confusing and seemingly arbitrarily enforced than before. On Saturday, a close and tense game between Mainz and Augsburg probably turned three minutes before the break. As Mainz winger Marcel Risse was about to cross from the right, striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was a few inches offside near the penalty spot. Risse didn't set up Choupo-Moting but pulled the ball back for the onrushing Nicolai Müller, who fired the ball into the far corner past the passive offside Choupo-Moting.

The beaten Augsburg keeper Simon Jentzsch later said that Choupo-Moting had not been obstructing his view, but adding: "I'm glad the referee blew his whistle." Because that's what happened - the goal was disallowed. Eight minutes from time, Augsburg started a rare counter attack which led to a - correct - penalty and the only goal of the game. It was Augsburg's first-ever win in the Bundesliga, but it left a sour taste. As early as half-time, Mainz business manager Christian Heidel complained that "a clearly legal goal" had been chalked off.

Those two decisions were contentious and crucial enough, but the matter came to a head during the last game of the weekend, Sunday's clash between Cologne and Hannover 96. A great Lukas Podolski free-kick put the hosts ahead, but then the visitors put Cologne under pressure and went looking for what would have been a deserved equaliser. On 70 minutes, Hannover midfielder Sérgio Pinto scored with a powerful first-time shot from the edge of the penalty box. However, the goal wasn't given, because Pinto's team-mate Didier Ya Konan had been standing in the box, a few steps to the goalkeeper's left, as he hit the shot.

While Ya Konan had clearly not been distracting the goalkeeper or interfering with play in any other way, the new interpretation of the rule may have forced the linesman to wave his flag, as the player could have been too close to the action for comfort, even though Cologne goalkeeper Michael Rensing later admitted he'd had no idea why the goal wasn't given. Then, 16 minutes later and at the other end, Podolski struck home from a tight angle to make it 2-0. It was a fantastic goal - but, while the ball whistled through the air, Cologne's Adil Chihi was in a blatant offside position right smack in the middle of the six-yard box. This time, however, the referee regarded this as passive offside and allowed the goal to stand.

Hannover were particularly unhappy about these calls, as the team would have climbed into second place with a win in Cologne, which would have set the stage perfectly for the coming Sunday, when league leaders Bayern travel to Hannover.

This match should be the sternest test so far for a side that is running away with the Bundesliga in record-setting fashion. The Munich giants and their new goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, have now gone 748 league minutes without conceding a goal (the record, set by Timo Hildebrand with Stuttgart, stands at 884 minutes) and last Saturday, against Hertha, the team jumped to a three-goal lead within the first 13 minutes, thanks in large part to the wizardry of Franck Ribéry, rejuvenated under new coach Jupp Heynckes.

The last time Bayern made it 3-0 so quickly in the league was in February 1983, when Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scored a hat-trick and Bayern beat Karlsruhe 6-1. Yes, it's an age like that and it's such players you have to compare the current Bayern side to. After all, the club legend, and current chairman, Rummenigge finished that 1982-83 season with 20 goals - his modern-day counterpart Mario Gomez has already scored half that amount with just nine games gone.

So perhaps it's indeed the case, as some observers already suggest, that Bayern face something like true competition only in the Champions League. Napoli held them to a draw in Italy on Tuesday night but, even so, you'd have to say this season is shaping up to have all the markings of something memorable. Bayern are so good, they don't even have to complain about the refereeing.

LAW 11 – OFFSIDE

Offside position

It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.

A player is in an offside position if:

• He is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the Second-last opponent

A player is not in an offside position if:

• He is in his own half of the field of play or
• He is level with the second-last opponent or
• He is level with the last two opponents

Offence
A player in an offside position is only penalized if, at the moment the ball
Touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee,
Involved in active play by:

• interfering with play or
• interfering with an opponent or
• gaining an advantage by being in that position

No offence
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:
• A goal kick
• A throw-in
• A corner kick

6
Every time I watch Barcelona they always leave a player offside just to cause confusion in the defense of the opposing team only to have a player like messi or pedro start a run from about 10 yards in front of the last defender, then someone like Xavi or Iniesta plays a ball over the top, the defense laps thinking a player is offside then all of a sudden Messi or Pedro get a running start on all the defenders and just has to make a pass to the player who was originally offside to score……
What do you think?
Is this unsportsmanlike like conduct?

Kaka set to be confirmed as a Real Madrid player
By Soccernet staff

June 8, 2009

Brazil international Kaka appears certain to be confirmed as a Real Madrid player after completing a medical on Monday.

Kaka: Madrid move on the horizon

The 27-year-old AC Milan playmaker was given permission to meet with Real officials between World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Paraguay and is thought to have passed both initial tests and a full medical at the national team's base in Recife.

Providing there are no last-minute problems Kaka will become Real's first signing following the return of Florentino Perez as club president.

If the deal is concluded the fee is expected to be £56m, which would smash the previous world record of £47m paid by Real to Juventus in 2001 for Zinedine Zidane and could be the first in a new wave of 'Galáctico' signings.

Kaka, who converted a penalty in Brazil's 4-0 win in Uruguay on Saturday, has refused to discuss his future since joining up with the Brazil squad last Tuesday.

When he last spoke publically about his future, Kaka insisted he was desperate to stay at the San Siro, but the economic realities of such a huge transfer fee mean Milan are eager to do business in order to provide new boss Leonardo with transfer funds. Ironically, it was Leonardo who helped persuade Kaka to join Milan from São Paulo in 2003.

Confirming that the medical had taken place a statement on the Brazilian Football Federation website read: ''The technical committee of the Brazilian national team attended the request of Kaka and the board of Real Madrid and released the player to perform the routine examinations in a clinic in Recife.

''The CBF had to make all the arrangements for the test through its Medical Department head Jose Luiz Runco, who accompanied the player during the tests.''

Regardless of whether a deal is completed on Monday or early on Tuesday Real Madrid will have to wait before they can parade Kaka at the Santiago Bernabeu due to Kaka's commitments with Brazil.

After entertaining Paraguay in Recife on Wednesday, Brazil begin their Confederations Cup campaign against Egypt next Monday and will be in action until June 28 if they make it through the tournament.

Ronaldo scores first goal for Corinthians

Ronaldo headed an injury time equaliser to spark wild celebrations

Brazilian striker Ronaldo, playing only his second game since a knee injury last year, scored an injury-time equaliser to give his new club Corinthians a 1-1 draw with arch-rivals Palmeiras on Sunday.

Ronaldo, who came on as a second-half substitute, was booked for climbing the fencing around the pitch to celebrate with the supporters after heading home at the far post from a corner in the second minute of injury time.

Part of the fencing gave way but nobody appeared to be hurt. Police rushed in to restore order and allow the game to continue.

"I'm very sorry for the incident, but I couldn't contain my emotions," Ronaldo said in a touchline interview.

Ronaldo, who defied predictions that he would have to end his career after the injury 13 months ago, later told a news conference: "It was a big fright, it was a rather irresponsible attitude because the fence wasn't so strong after all. But you don't think at the time, you just want to celebrate with the fans.

"It's always emotional to bounce back.

"I can't explain what I felt but I certainly thought about .... all the difficult moments I've had in this recovery."

Ronaldo vowed there was more to come.

"This is just the beginning. There's still some way to go .... I need to lose a bit of weight and gain some speed and mobility."

The 2002 World Cup winner ruptured a tendon in his left knee in a Serie A game playing for AC Milan against Livorno in February last year.

It was the third such injury of his career and came when he was already suffering from a loss of form and fitness problems.

"They said he would never play again and there he is scoring a decisive goal in an important game," Corinthians coach Mano Menezes said.

Ronaldo left Milan and joined Corinthians in December.

He made his first appearance last Wednesday, also as a second-half substitute, and suffered a black eye after being hit by a microphone as reporters invaded the pitch after the final whistle.

A capacity-crowd of 45,000 packed the Prudentao stadium in Presidente Prudente, 580 km from Sao Paulo, for the Paulista championship match on Sunday.

The three-times World Player of the Year came on in the 64th minute with Palmeiras 1-0 ahead, Diego Souza having scored in the 48th minute, and dominating the game.

Ronaldo struck the crossbar with a shot from outside the area before scoring his first goal since January last year, when he was on target for AC Milan against Napoli.

Palmeiras coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was unimpressed and criticised the referee.

"I think he wanted Ronaldo to score a goal," said the former Brazil and Real Madrid coach.

"He kept awarding free kicks near our penalty area. I think the referee was affected psychologically (by Ronaldo's presence).

Ronaldo on target again for Corinthians

Ronaldo has returned in impressive form since his injury

Ronaldo continued his impressive return from a year-long injury layoff as he scored for the second game in a row to give Corinthians a 2-1 win over Sao Caetano on Wednesday.

Sao Caetano had taken a 22nd minute lead with a Marcelo Batatais header before Andre Santos rifled in the equaliser with a long-range shot in the 35th minute.

Ronaldo, playing his third game for Corinthians and starting for the first time in his home debut, swept the ball home with a first-time shot from Dentinho's low cross in the 51st minute.

The former Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, AC Milan and Inter Milan player, who scored an injury-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw with arch-rivals Palmeiras on Sunday, went off in the 78th minute to a standing ovation from the 30,000 crowd at the Pacaembu.

Ronaldo, 32, ruptured a tendon in his left knee in a Serie A game playing for AC Milan against Livorno in February and later left the Italian club. He joined Corinthians in December in a surprise move and made his debut one week ago.

Corinthians stayed second in the Paulista championship and cut Palmeiras's lead to a point after Vandelei Luxemburgo's team could manage only a 1-1 draw with Ituano.

Football / Corinthians set $10m release clause for Ronaldo
« on: December 18, 2008, 10:24:27 AM »
Brazilian giants Corinthians have set a release clause of $10.6million for Ronaldo.

The 32-year-old has arrived at the Sao Paulo club for one year as a free agent, and Corinthians clearly intend to make it difficult for anyone to tempt him away in that time.

Director of marketing Luis Paulo Rosenberg said: ''Corinthians are protected.

''We already thought about him leaving the club. We have paid nothing to sign him and would receive 25million reais if he quits.

''It would be the best business in the history of the club.''

Rosenberg is sure Ronaldo will not leave Corinthians before December 31, 2010 - even though the release figure is not insurmountable for the richest European clubs.

''There is no chance for Ronaldo to quit. The world is running out of money.''

Rosenberg also cited previous interest from Manchester City - although his recollection that the Barclays Premier League club made an offer is at odds with word from Eastlands last summer, when they reported they eventually chose not to pursue the player.

''He has recently had an offer from Manchester City but preferred playing here,'' said Rosenberg, who added all the agreements signed with the companies interested in using the image of Ronaldo will also have a compensation clause if the one-year contracts are broken.

''If Ronaldo wants to quit and the company also want to, it will not be that simple,'' he explained.

''Everything will have a clause. There might be an interest in the player, but the shirt is Corinthians.''
