Entertainment & Culture Discussion / Heavy D Dead at 44
« on: November 08, 2011, 04:57:38 PM »
Rap legend Heavy D -- one of the most influential rappers of the '90s -- died earlier today ... TMZ has learned.

Heavy D -- real name Dwight Arrington Myers -- was rushed to an L.A. hospital around noon today ... and was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1 PM. He was 44 years old.

We've learned a 911 call was placed from Heavy's Beverly Hills home around 11:25 AM to report an unconscious male on the walkway .

When help arrived, we're told Heavy D was conscious and speaking -- and was transported to a nearby hospital.

He died a short time later.

Cops are investigating the death -- and so far, there are no obvious signs of foul play. Police are currently at the home.

What about Track & Field / Usain Bolt to race Chris Johnson
« on: January 04, 2010, 02:32:53 PM »

Not sure if this should be in the Joke section. Yahoo have the nerve to put up this picture and ask who is the fastest human  :o

Since Usain Bolt burst onto the worldwide scene in the spring of 2008, no sprinter has been able to touch him. Now, the self-proclaimed "fastest man in the NFL" is going to try.

ESPN reports that NFL rushing champ Chris Johnson is in talks with the three-time gold medalist to run a charity race that will determine the world's fastest human. The camps are still discussing the distance of the race. Johnson wants a shorter sprint, which would theoretically favor him, and Bolt would prefer to keep things closer to 100 meters.

Short or long, it doesn't matter. Let me write this slowly so there's no confusion: Johnson. Doesn't. Have. A. Chance.

I don't want to hear about his fast 40 times at the combine or how Bolt is a notoriously slow starter or how if you sync up Bolt's blazing 100 from the Beijing Olympics, it looks like Johnson could hang with him for the first half of the race. Those facts are minor distractions obscuring the most important point of all: Usain Bolt is the fastest human being who has ever walked the Earth. Running a 4.24 at the combines and having the ability to outrun a safety for the Houston Texans doesn't mean Johnson can compete with that.

If they're running in pads or on turf maybe Johnson could have a shot. Not on a track though. Sprinting is a discipline. There are nuances to running a race. It's not just outrunning the guy taking an angle.

The reason Usain Bolt is a slow starter is because it fits in best with his racing style. He builds to peak speed in the 100. That Johnson's sprint matches up with the beginning parts of Bolt's race makes as little difference as the Broncos leading the AFC West on Halloween. All that matters is how you finish. And in a race of 10 meters or 1,000, it would be stunning if Bolt didn't finish ahead of Johnson.

There was some chatter during the last Olympics that an NFL team could give Usain Bolt a workout based solely on his speed. But people came to their senses and realized that speed doesn't necessarily make a football player. The same logic applies here. Just because Chris Johnson is fast doesn't mean he can hang with a world-class sprinter.

I'd certainly watch a Bolt-Johnson race. And I certainly won't be surprised when Usain Bolt crosses the finish line first, as usual.

Entertainment & Culture Discussion / No Machel for Carnival 2k10 ???
« on: December 30, 2009, 10:34:27 AM »
Hearing this talk since Miami Carnival....But...Ah wonda if he could really hold out...

Courtesy Trinidad Express

Machel Montano is so far holding fast to his decision not to do any live performances in Trinidad and Tobago for Carnival next year.

He will also not hold his popular Alternative Concept (AC) concert for Carnival.

This is sad news for fans who have been hearing his new music on the airwaves and looking forward to seeing him perform.

Already released are ’Hot Like Pepper’ recorded with Serani, ’Tell Me’, ’Bad Behaviour’ , ’Bumper To Fender’, ’Awrite’ and ’Feteing On’ with Skinny Fabulous.

These are singles on a soon-to-be-released album titled Machel Montano Album 34.

Between 1986 and 2009, Montano, who began singing as a child, recorded 33 albums.

Montano has also been in talks with Phase II Pan Groove to record their 2010 Panorama song, making it the second consecutive year he will be associated with the band, but it is understood a decision has been taken that Kernel Roberts of the HD family will provide the vocals.

Speaking to the Express yesterday, Montano’s mother Liz Montano said Machel decided to work solely on his forthcoming album but not do any live performances in T&T.

Machel is performing in Jamaica on January 2, 2010 at a concert billed as ’Shaggy and Friends’ which is a charity concert for the children’s hospital in Jamaica, Liz Montano said.

The decision not to hold the popular AC, after seven years was due to a lack of venues, she said. It comes in the wake of Government’s announcement, which has affected several promoters, not to make the Hasely Crawford Stadium available for Carnival events.

This had been the venue for the AC for the past three years

However the HD band, consisting of Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy, Zan and Umi Marcano, all have hits and will be working in fetes for the season, she said.

’Remember he said he wanted to give them space to develop themselves,’ Liz Montano said.

With AC out of the picture the two major concerts planned for that day in Port of Spain are ’Brass The Rebirth’ and ’Temperature’.

Promoter Cliff Harris, who has not yet announced a venue for ’Brass The Rebirth’, said the event would pay tribute to the late Jamaican bandleader Byron Lee who for several years was one of the headline acts of ’Brass’.

As a result, Harris said, the crowd could expect a ’barrage of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires hits’.

Harris added: ’The decision to produce The Rebirth’ on February 6, 2010, came after careful consideration of the market and the overall industry. There seemed a need to provide a medium for young acts to showcase their innate talents. In addition to this, within the past five years, the Carnival vibe has been numbed by an expected schedule of events and particularly on what was traditionally Brass night-one show that enjoyed seven fruitful years, but in 2009 proved successful but uninspiring.’

Roy Maraj, whose ’Temperature’ takes place at the Queen’s Park Oval, will provide a Jamaican flavour with artistes like Beenie Man and Maka Diamond. This in addition to Bunji and Fay-Ann and the Asylum Band, KMC with Red Black and White and Ronnie McIntosh and Shurwayne Winchester and You, to name a few.

Maraj said his rationale for the Jamaican artistes was ’to break the monotony of the local acts who play the same thing in all the fetes.’

Maraj added it was a great loss to the season not to have the music of Destra Garcia (who is pregnant) and Montano.

World's Largest Bridge to Stretch Over 13 Miles Long

link

Maybe.. that dream of the Trinidad-Tobago bridge can come through after all ?????... it will be about half that size...

Construction on what would become the world's longest marine causeway, connecting Qatar and Bahrain, is due to begin next year, and what a project it is: We're talking about a bridge more than 13 miles long, costing around $3 billion.

Somewhat adorably named the Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Causeway, this massive bridge is expected to take around 4.5 years to complete and cost somewhere between $2.3 and $3 billion, but should be a great help for travel between Qatar and Bahrain. The trip currently takes more than four hours and will be reduced to 30 minutes on the bridge, and those in charge expect 10,000 to 20,000 vehicles per day to use it.

Football / BECKHAM TO MAKE UNITED RETURN: But only in a charity match
« on: December 10, 2006, 02:12:41 PM »
BECKHAM'S RETURN THRILLS GILL

Manchester United chief executive David Gill is delighted to have the chance to welcome David Beckham back to Old Trafford.
Beckham is the first big name to be confirmed in a European Select XI that will play United on March 13 next year as part of a joint UEFA/EU-sanctioned charity game.

The match will commemorate not only the 50th anniversary of the Busby Babes’ entry into European competition, but also the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, signalling a united Europe.

Italy’s World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi will take charge of the European team, which will comprise of the best European-born players from all the major clubs in the continent.

Barcelona’s Frank Rijkaard and Lyon’s Gerard Houllier have already offered their support, while Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger have been sent letters outlining the project in the hope Chelsea and Arsenal will make some of their big names made available.

But, no matter what the eventual make-up of Lippi’s star-studded team, the return of Beckham, almost four years after he was sold to Real Madrid, is sure to be the main attraction.

“It is wonderful that David is coming back,” said Gill.

“He was a very important factor in our success throughout the 1990s and early into the 2000s.

“He is one of the best players the club has had and it is great to have him back.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? DAVID BECKHAM

Gill has pledged that all proceeds from the game, through ticket sales, television rights and even cash taken at the kiosks will be channelled into charitable causes through the new Manchester United Foundation.

Projects have already been identified in Belgrade, where the Busby Babes played their final game, and Munich, where the plane carrying them back from Yugoslavia on February 6, 1958 crashed, resulting in the deaths of 23 passengers, including eight players.

The club are keen to make a distinction between this game and any actual commemoration of the Munich disaster, which is sure to see calls for funds raised to be given over to the victims’ families.

However, any plan to mark that particular sombre occasion with a game on the actual day of the crash will be affected because of FIFA’s decision to make it a designated friendly date on their international match calendar.

Tiger wins British Open, 11th major title
Story Tools:     Associated Press

HOYLAKE, England (AP) - Tiger Woods had an answer for everyone Sunday on another methodical march to victory in the British Open.

One month after missing the cut for the first time in a major, Woods was ruthless as ever on the brown-baked links of Royal Liverpool, making three straight birdies to turn away a spirited challenge by Chris DiMarco and win golf's oldest championship for the second straight year.
He closed with a 5-under 67 and became the first player since Tom Watson in 1982-83 to win consecutive titles.

Woods tapped in for par for a two-shot victory over DiMarco, and pent-up emotions tore through his lips as he screamed "Yes!" He then buried his head in caddie Steve Williams' shoulder and sobbed, his chest heaving.

Trinbago, NBA & World Basketball / Steve Nash.. big football fan

'I can't wait another four years'

by FIFAworldcup.com

Steve Nash, basketball player

Many of you will have know that Steve Nash is widely considered the best point guard in basketball, and that this year he became the first player in his position since Magic Johnson to win back-to-back MVP awards.

What you might not know is that the Johannesburg-born 32-year-old is a devoted football fan, having inherited a love of Tottenham Hostspur from his English father. Nash, in fact, trained with the London club as a youngster and, though it is in another sport that he has since made his name, the Phoenix Suns’ star player retains a genuine passion for the beautiful game, a passion clearly evident when he spoke to FIFAworldcup.com after Italy’s thrilling semi-final win over Germany.

So, what did you think of the game?
Fantastic. Amazing. We had a fantastic time, especially during extra-time. It was great end-to-end action.

Who impressed you most?
I thought that the Italians defenders were terrific, (Gennaro) Gattuso included. They ran so much and I must say that I was very impressed. Alessandro Del Piero is also a friend of mine and I was really happy for him that he came on and scored a goal. It was a great finish, and the first goal was fantastic, too. The way Grosso finished it was terrific, and Pirlo made such a beautiful pass to set it up. To make such a thoughtful pass in the last minute of extra time was very impressive. I was happy for Alex (Del Piero) because he has not played too much (for Juventus) in the Italian championship. We were very excited.

Are you a Juventus supporter?
Yeah, because of Alex, that’s my team in Italy.

And what about the German team?
I actually was really impressed by them. On paper, in the transfer market, I don’t think they would go for the same price tags as the Italians would. But for them to be so organised and to create as many chances as they did – not that Italy didn’t create a ton of chances themselves – was very impressive. They were very intelligent and well-organised, and very strong.
But I supported Italy because I have a friend on the team.

You are very passionate about football, aren’t you?
I play in the summer and I do love it. I can shout and get passionate about it, but I often get very nervous. It’s difficult sometimes; I’d much rather be playing, but I love the game. First and foremost, I’m an England fan. My parents are both from London, and all my cousins and extended family live there. I grew up an England fan, in an English household in Canada. We support Tottenham Hotspur in our house. But then I’m a fan of football. I love to see good football, and I love to see people play at this wonderful level we see at the World Cup.

Which games have you most enjoyed during the tournament?
The way France played against Brazil. That game was the highlight of the tournament for me, because France played so well against the reigning champions. Ronaldinho’s considered the best player in the world, but Zidane showed that, on his day, he’s still the best. That, and Alex scoring yesterday, were the two best moments for me.

As a fan, I went to the last World Cup and saw England play Argentina. It was great to be there. There’s a rivalry between England and Argentina, so to be there was fantastic.
In an upsetting way, I must have been about 12 years old, but I remember when Maradona scored two goals – one of them quite controversial – against England in Mexico, to knock England out. It was quite upsetting. That said, the second goal is still one of the best goals ever scored in the World Cup.

Have you been disappointed with England in this competition?
No, I can’t say that. Obviously, in the first three or four games they didn’t play up to their capabilities, but it’s difficult for them, there’s always a lot of pressure. They didn’t quite have the chemistry right up until the Portugal game, but then they started to play much better. Then came the red card. I thought they deserved to win that game, but the way they fought and battled with only 10 men, I was extremely proud of them. It was an amazing performance considering they were down to 10 men. It was too bad they went out, because they were just starting to play the way they’re capable of.

Who do you think is the player of the tournament?Right now, I would say Zidane. He didn’t necessarily play his best in the group stages, and I think France were struggling with their chemistry. But in the last two games, the ones that have counted the most, against Spain and Brazil, he has been outstanding and played at the highest level.

Who would you like to see in the final?
I’d like to see France and Italy again. That would obviously be a replay of the EURO 2000 final, which was a fantastic game.

Would you like to add anything?]
I can’t wait another four years for the next one!

Do you have an official website or a charity you’d like to promote?

www.stevenash.org/ It supports children, kids, youths – anything to do with kids, really. We’ve done a bunch of work in Central and South America, and some things in Canada.

Ben Wallace is bringing his rebounds, blocks and steals to the Chicago Bulls.

The free-agent center, a four-time Defensive Player of the Year, is leaving the Detroit Pistons to sign with the Bulls.

It's sad to see him go.. especially since the Pistons was the best defensive team in the league.. but it boils down to $$$. Detroit was willing to offer a four-year contract worth about $50 million. The Bulls have just offered him more..
