So, for a few weeks now, in the Bronx/Queens area, can clearly pick up 96WE FM on 96.1 frequency.  When I 1st discovered it thought someone was streaming and someone how pirated that frequency, only to discover it is almost on a daily basis, at least based on my limited investigation. 96.0 is a spanish station, so when it fades 96.0 comes in

Is Aaron Brooks a free agent?  Would like to see him in the mix at the point, not really sold on Sessions.

During the off season Kareem needs to work w/Bynum some more, he still missing some umph

General Discussion / Criminalizing the Society

TT Guardian
By Dr. Selwyn R. Cudjoe
December 15, 2010

I always believe that the demise of the Grenada Revolution occurred because of the hotheadedness of forty-year olds who had little knowledge of the world and people. They knew theory aplenty but were not seasoned by common sense and wisdom that only comes with age. One is seeing a similar tendency in the UNC-led coalition called the People’s Partnership.

Anywhere you look you can see and hear Anand Ramlogan, the attorney general, who believes that every social problem can be fixed by bombast, the police presence or burdensome laws that infringe upon people’s freedom. Although it is true a T&T government only needs a Prime Minister and an Attorney General to exist, Mr. Ramlogan seems to feel that he is the law of land aided no doubt by the Prime Minister.

Image his fas’ness. Telling Jack to shut up. Well Jack really reach! A young man merely forty years old; holding his first substantive post in the society. Yet, he believes he could speak to anyone as he pleases. Jack, it seems, is merely the latest victim of his intemperance.

And what is Jack’s crime? He believes he should run his ministry as the law of the land demands.

It is important to understand that certain realities and realignments come with ‘Indian Time Ah Come’. One is faced with an essentially litigious mindset that believes that the law and the appeal to the law are the only ways to solve a problem. If yo’ mother take yo’ land; take she to court. If yo’ brother bodder yo, take him to the Privy Council. No one in T&T has taken as many constitutional motions to the Privy Council as have Ramesh Maharaj and Anand Rmalogan.

At the end of day Ramlogan would have used more English lawyers to interfere in our business than any previous attorney general. Whiteness, it seems, confers a mantra of authority. If a local problem is too intractable call down a white man. He has the answer. It’s a holdover from colonialism; a certain mindset that sees all virtues in whiteness and every vice in blackness.

A problem arises with the CAL board. Bring in a white man to solve the problem. There is too much murder, go back to the days of slavery; hang them high and bring back the cat-o-nine tail. “Beat dem bad and dey bound to surrender.” Forget the socio-economic or even cultural conditions that may be at the base of this behavior.

Under the current law, a person (not a suspected gang member, a suspected thief, or a suspected swindler) can be detained by our police without charge for as much as five days. Ramlogan observes that the present law allows that “if there are reasonable grounds to suspect a citizen of committing a crime, [a police] can arrest and detain [him or her] for such a time as reasonable having regards to surrounding facts and circumstances.”

Reasonable by Ramlogan’s definition “could be 48 hours; it could be five days.” Extending this logic, it could be five months or even five years. As it is asked generally in American jurisprudence, “What are the limits of this standard?” Should any law be so designed to give the police unfettered discretion to restrict a person’s freedom?

The class bias of this legislation is obvious which renders it unconstitutional. Ramlogan’s rationale for this draconian measure reads as follows:

“If you choose the bling culture and the sneakers culture. If you choose to laugh at a feller who is studying hard to reach somewhere but you want to wear a Puma and a Nike with air socks then the time has come for society to set you on a straight path and that is what this legislation is all about.”

The target of this piece of legislation is the black boy in the ghetto whom I presume prefers not to study; laughs at those who study hard; prefers Nikes and Pumas; and is associated with what can be called gang culture.

I did not see the same urgency to detain anyone for five days, five months, or five years who, it can be reasonably assumed, fleeced the public of monies that equated a million times the cost of a Puma (about $1,000) or a Nike. Such citizens continue to live large; enjoying the largess of their ill-gotten gains; and continue to move in respectable international circles. Yet the little black boy, poor and unschooled, who is accused of stealing a Puma can be snatched up and kept in the pen for five days or five months.

Tucked away somewhere in Ramlogan’s rationale is the proposition that all citizens are not equal in the eyes of the law. Under this legislation bail is being used in a punitive manner rather than to assure the attendance of the defendant when his presence is required in court.

Using Ramlogan’s logic one can now understand how persons suspected of causing more harm to the state than these young boys who steal Pumas are not subjected to the same draconian responses from the state? Does losing $1,000 create more suffering and pain among citizens than the fleecing of the public of $1,000,000,000? Are those persons accused of committing such crimes subjected to the same rules of detention as the black boy in the ghetto?

Why the reluctance to extradite persons for whom there is reasonable evidence to believe may have broken the laws of another country. Why aren’t the rights of the black boys in the ghetto accorded the same protection as those who are alleged of stealing millions of dollars? Why does the possession of blackness seem to be such a crime in the society?

Once any law is passed, it can be dusted off to suit any purpose an eager attorney general wants it to serve. Today it is aimed at the boy in the ghetto; tomorrow it can be construed to implicate the governor of the Central Bank. Next week it might be used to undermine the Chief Justice.

Tyranny does not come in one fell swoop. It arrives gradually as zealous ideologues chip away at our freedoms, a little bit at a time.

Let us refrain from going down the road of a police state. Holding a black boy in detention for five days without a charge is unconstitutional. Is this the price we want to pay to satiate Anand’s predilections and the PP’s fetish with legality?

Football / Latapy wants to stay on
« on: December 01, 2010, 10:25:44 PM »
Russell Latapy wants to stay on.
By: Kern De Freitas (Express).

Russell Latapy is not ready to step down as national senior team coach despite the Soca Warriors' early exit from the Digicel Caribbean Cup.

A sober Latapy, on return to Piarco International Airport yesterday from Martinique with the national senior football squad, told the media he has served national football in various capacities over three decades, and would like to continue to do so.

T&T went under 2-0 to a superior Cuba outfit on Friday, before Grenada shocked Trinida and Tobago 1-0 on Sunday. T&T ended their tournament with a 1-0 consolation win over hosts Martinique in their final Group H encounter Monday.

The former Falkirk FC player, though, would not speculate on whether he has a future with the national team.

"I understand (my coaching status) is an obvious question, but it is an obvious question that I cannot answer for obvious reasons. I have to sit down with the (T&T Football) Federation and those responsible, and then I would be in a position to answer that question."

Latapy said the team's poor finishing cost them a place in the semi-finals, and a berth in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

"…We have ourselves to blame always," the former T&T midfielder reflected, "because if we score our chances we will win games and then again we saw (missed chances) against Martinique as well. We wasted a lot of goal-scoring opportunities. I mean I will be worried if we weren't creating the opportunities."

Latapy conceded that Cuba were the better team in their opening encounter, but suggested that despite T&T's poor marksmanship, Grenada were fortunate to grab the winner against his team.

"Again we had the youngest team in the tournament though, so maybe a bit of inexperience showed," he added.

Latapy also appealed to the T&T fans to continue supporting the Soca Warriors in what he described as a learning period.

"We understand (the fans) disappointment, we as players share that disappointment and maybe more so than the fans. But again it's a process of learning and going forward, and I think we're going in the right direction," he reasoned.

In hindsight, Latapy would have liked to have had the entire team together for longer before they travelled to Martinique.

" There was progression during the tournament from the first game to the third game. The team played better with each game… I would (also) have done more work on finishing because I suppose that was our downfall, not taking our chances."

My Reaction: WDMC, HMFN!!  Take JW, LP, OC and go!!

On 24 June 2006, in Leipzig, Argentina and Mexico met in a pulsating Round of 16 encounter at that year's FIFA World Cup™. The South Americans went through with a 2-1 win, with the Mexicans' hopes of a quarter-final place dashed once again. Four years on, Javier Aguirre’s men are desperate for revenge and have the chance to test themselves against arguably the tournament’s form team. But will they be able to handle charismatic coach Diego Maradona and mercurial maestro Lionel Messi?

The match
Argentina-Mexico, Round of 16, Johannesburg, Sunday 27 June, 20.30 (local time)
Argentina come into the last 16 on the crest of a wave, having swept all before them in Group B and ended up with three wins and nine points. Coach Maradona seems to have forged a sense of purpose and endeavour from a squad that had its difficulties in qualifying for South Africa 2010 and, with an in-form Lionel Messi in their ranks, they are hoping to book their place amongst the world’s top eight sides for the second FIFA World Cup in succession. El Diego will also enjoy the luxury of having a full-strength squad to choose from, free from injuries and suspensions.

For his part, Mexico boss Aguirre has already expressed his disquiet at having finished in second place in Group A, largely because his team has been inconsistent so far. A fine victory against 2006 runners-up France was the highpoint of El Tri’s group games, but it was sandwiched between a draw with hosts South Africa and a narrow defeat against Uruguay.

However revenge will be uppermost in Los Aztecas’ thoughts, not least because the current squad contains several survivors of that last, fateful meeting with Argentina including Rafael Marquez, who scored Mexico’s goal in Leipzig four years ago. The objective for Aguirre’s men is plain and simple: to get to that elusive “fifth game” at a FIFA World Cup finals tournament, and to book their place in the quarter-finals for the first time in 24 years.

History is on the side of Argentina; in fourteen matches against Mexico in the last 20 years, La Albiceleste have emerged victorious on seven occasions, with five draws and only two wins for El Tri.

Players to watch
Lionel Messi v Rafael Marquez
The Barcelona team-mates will meet once again as international rivals, as in 2006, when Mexican skipper Marquez opened the scoring and Messi came on as a late substitute with only a matter of minutes left in the game. The FIFA World Player of the Year 2009 is yet to notch his first goal in South Africa 2010, and La Pulga will be hoping to open his account in the knockout stages. Marquez, however, has continued his knack of scoring goals from his defensive midfield position, and scored his country’s first goal of the tournament in the Opening Match against South Africa.

The stat
14 - No fewer than 14 current players are survivors of the two nations’ last FIFA World Cup meeting in Leipzig in 2006. Amongst the eight Mexicans and six Argentinians is midfielder Maxi Rodriguez, whose superb volleyed winner for the 1986 champions was named by FIFA.com readers as the goal of the 2006 finals.

What they said
“We’re going to give Mexico the respect they deserve because, in spite of losing against Uruguay, they know exactly what they're doing. We will try to get at them and look for their weaknesses. They will have to respect my players as well because we’re putting together a very good tournament and we'll give everything for the shirt,” Diego Maradona, Argentina coach.

“It’s Argentina, but so what? There is always a lot of pessimism in Mexico. Unfortunately sometimes we don’t believe in ourselves and we don’t have that extra self-belief that other teams have. We need to change that mindset. Argentina can be beaten and that’s the way we need to approach the game,” Rafael Marquez, Mexico captain.

Germany-England preview

Of all the great FIFA World Cup™ fixtures, Germany v England is one of the games guaranteed to captivate the entire footballing world.

Laden with a rich and tumultuous history, the match has featured some of the true legends of the game. Franz Beckenbauer and Bobby Moore were the towering personalities in England's sole FIFA World Cup™ triumph to date, at Wembley in the 1966 Final. Gerd Muller fired the extra-time winner when West Germany came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in the quarter-finals four years later in Mexico. The Germans prevailed on penalties in the Italy 1990 semi-finals, before going on to claim their third world crown. This time round, Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein provides the setting for the latest instalment in an enduring rivalry, which many on both sides would doubtless have preferred to see played later in the competition.

Germany's young team won Group D after a rollercoaster ride through the section. The critics were purring after a scintillating 4-0 victory over Australia, but a 1-0 defeat by Serbia brought the team back to earth with a bump. As it turned out, a deserved 1-0 victory over Ghana ultimately saw Die Nationalmannschaft through. As for England, the squad arrived in South Africa bristling with stars at the zenith of their careers, all of them determined to make up for past disappointments on the international stage. However, seemingly cramped by the weight of expectation, Fabio Capello's men scrambled to second spot in Group C with a crucial 1-0 win against Slovenia in their final match, following a 1-1 draw with USA and a frustrating stalemate against Algeria.

The game
Germany–England, Round of 16, Mangaung/Bloemfontein, 16.00

Both teams will take heart from weathering a crisis at the finals. Germany and England are fired up and confident of removing the first major obstacle on their path to glory. In public at least, both camps are professing delight at crossing swords so early in the knockout stages: a keen sense of anticipation and history in the making is, we are told, the dominant emotion. However, both Germany boss Joachim Low and his England counterpart Capello face potential selection difficulties. Bastian Schweinsteiger, a revelation so far in front of the Germany back four, is rated highly doubtful with injury, as is full-back Jerome Boateng. Striker Cacau is definitely out after rupturing a stomach muscle in training, but Miroslav Klose returns from suspension. For England, Wayne Rooney has lost form at the wrong time and is also carrying a knock on the ankle, as are Aaron Lennon and Michael Carrick.

Players to watch
Philipp Lahm v Steven Gerrard

The Bayern Munich and Liverpool men are unlikely to go head-to-head very often during the match, as Lahm operates wide on the Germany right and Gerrard, though he may be asked to play on the left, prefers to go through the middle. But both captains will be required to keep cool and show genuine leadership qualities when the emotional temperature inevitably starts to rise. Each must fire his troops up to the right level of intensity and determination without pushing matters to boiling point. This is a real test for the rookies, as both Lahm and Gerrard are wearing the armband for the first time at a major tournament as they deputise for injured duo Michael Ballack and Rio Ferdinand respectively.

The stat
27 – The number of times Germany and England have met in full internationals over the years according to FIFA's statistics. The Three Lions have won 12 and the Germans ten – though Germany have also triumphed on penalties in two matches which ended as draws after extra time.

What they said
"It would be a terrible mistake to underestimate them just because they had a few problems in their group. They may well raise their game for the knockout matches. We have no need to be in awe, and we certainly have no reason to fear them. We respect them of course, but we're not afraid," Lukas Podolski, Germany striker.

"I think we can go all the way this time. I've never felt it like this before in other tournaments. I thought it was an excellent performance against Slovenia and we can't wait to get to grips with Germany," Joe Cole, England midfielder.

Voice of the fans
"It's coming home, it's coming home, football's coming home! And after this game, Germany are going home!” FIFA.com user robfylan (England)

Have Your Say
Can England banish the jinx which seems to descend on their meetings with Germany at major tournaments, and finally lay to rest the ghosts of shoot-out defeats in 1990 and 1996?

Football / Just come back from the Nou Camp....
« on: July 31, 2009, 09:28:22 PM »
Was a sight to behold, football fans period, but Barca fans in particular would enjoy the experience and mind you I did not even see a match!  Some of the highlights:

(i) At the entrance to the museum were glass cases w/the Barca kit from inception to current.  (Boy boots were awful looking in the early 1900s, glad I missed that era)

(ii) Upon entering the actual museum the players who competed in the historic treble are portrayed, little write up of each of them along w/a photo and their resp team shirt.

(iii) The history of the club is portrayed throughout w/past legends to current stars displayed on gigantic boards

(iv) Video clips of various games from this past season are on show throughout the museum, in particular the 2-0 CL final and the game vs RM at the Bernabeu.  The 3 trophies are also on display and that was a major hit, everyone was taking photos in front of those.

(v)  A few $$ making schemes as well of course, you can take pics w/players superimposed and w/the last CL trophy for a few Euro.  In the gift shop you can purchase nuff nelia

Then low and behold as I was walking away from one of the displays, I see this magger man in a sailor hat and dark macohmeh man shades on, it was Pep, disguise worked well, but I was bein a nosy trini, so ah pull him sqaure for a quick SWN interview, here's how it went:

100% B: So Pep, nice disguise, but quickly, I am from TT and am a Barca fan, did not think I would be seeing you here today
Pep: Yes, had to stop by to close a few last minute things, but seeing that you are a fan all the way from TT, I decided to oblige

100% B: Thanks again, well, this may not be the best way to start this interview, but why sell Samuel?
Pep: Yes, this is a hard one for fans to swallow and the players as well.  Samuel is a truly great player and it is no overstatement when I say that he was in part responsible for the two recent CL successes we have had

100% B: Yes, well I read on "La Vanguardia" his "last" interview where he stated that the players were not at all happy w/this recent move, could you comment further?
Pep: I'd love to, but I really cannot, let's just say Joan can be a challenging personality to please at times.

100% B: Fair enough, on SWN, many Barca fans were truly unhappy
Pep: Yes, this is not surprising, but Ibra is a very good player and I think we will continue to grow from strength to strength.  We wish Samuel well at Inter

100% B: Are you familiar w/the SWN?
Pep: Are you kidding me?  Of course, I first heard of the forum when TT qualified for the 06 WC and decided to check it out, I actually did not realize you were a Barca fan, I am more familiar w/posters such as Freakazoid, Disgruntled, Filho, and Jah Gol, from a Braca standpt that is

100% B: Anything in particular stands out for you from reading SWN?
Pep: Yes, you guys don't keep anything back.  I most particularly like some of the TT expressions I have learnt such as "Bazodee", "chupidee", "labourer", and then my personal favorite "macoh meh man"

100% B: Why is "macoh meh man" your favorite?
Pep: Depending on your next few qus, you will see why

100% B: Fair enough, any comments on the trophies this season?
Pep: We had an awesome year, I know many credit me, but quite frankly the players worked very hard, in the end we even had a few major injuries and suspensions threatening our successes but we pulled through

100% B: Any comments on the CL final?
Pep: Great game for us, Man U is a great team and Alex F is a great coach, but once we were playing vs the macoh meh man, we had to go for the jugular and run rings around the 11 cones from Man U (nice one Dinho  ;D)

100% B: LOL, you mean CR?  :rotfl:
Pep: I mean the man is a very good player, but he whines to much, so I must apologize to DHW, Cappo, SM, and others, but once the macoh meh man was a Man U player, we went for the kill

100% B: What about the 6-2 vs RM at the Bernabeu?
Pep: You know, we just clicked that game, truly in the back of our minds we were thinking, CL final coming up, let's fine tune, cause let's face it, the league title was already won.

100% B: What about next season? RM have strengthened their team
Pep: Well, the 6-2 at the Bernabeu will look like baby food as the macoh meh man has now changed teams, so let me apologize to Kicker, Toppa, and all others ahead of time, but this guy makes me want to anihilate an opponent on the field of play

100% B:  :rotfl:  Nice Pep, well thanks for your time, I know the friendly is coming up this weekend, can we expect anything?
Pep: Yes, we will give some of the 2nd team players more playing time, it's an off season friendly vs LA after all

100% B: Well best of luck next season, still upset about Eto'o, but we will move on
Pep: Understandable, good luck in your 2010 campaign

100% B:  :frustrated:
