Football / Pope On The Pitch
« on: December 18, 2006, 11:17:49 AM »
Just came across this on CNN.com (Maybe they could make room for some CIC standouts :

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -- The Vatican may be the world's smallest state, but it is thinking of mustering a soccer team that could compete with the world's best, according to Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone.

"I don't rule out that in the future the Vatican could form a top soccer team of the level of Inter, Roma," and other Serie A sides, Bertone was reported as saying in the Italian media.

The number two to Pope Benedict, a well-known soccer fan, recently said the Holy See could form "a magnificent team" by drawing on the hundreds of Brazilian students at its pontifical universities around the world.

He used to commentate on the matches of Genoa and Sampdoria for a local TV station when he was archbishop of Genova, where both teams are based.

Bertone is not the only soccer crazy cardinal. His colleague Fiorenzo Angelini is an ardent AC Roma fan and often commentates on Serie A matches for Vatican radio.

The Vatican, covering less than 0.5 square kilometers (0.1931 square miles), may struggle against the soccer elite, but it could prove a handful for similarly tiny San Marino and Andorra, who have competed for years in international soccer, losing nearly every game.

San Marino, a fellow micro-state inside Italy's borders, lost 13-0 to Germany in September.

Football / London Trip Take A Bite Out Of TrueTrini
« on: March 09, 2006, 08:38:14 AM »
Since getting back from London, we boy was under de weather.

Last night, he went to the hospital. Nothing alarming or life threatening as far as I could tell. But he's been really sick, lots of coughing, loss of voice, feeling weak etc. Hopefully, he should be back to his usual self shortly.

I didn't want to disturb him late last night to see if he'd gone back home or spent the night in the hospital, so I don't know as yet. I'll provide more information as I get it.

Is one ah we own, so... yuh know how it go.

Football / What if it goes to Penalties, who should kick, who in goal???
« on: November 14, 2005, 01:10:12 PM »
In the unlikely even that this next game comes down to penalties, who gives we Warriors the best chance at winning?

My take on it:

In goal - Shaka
Kickers - Dwight, Latas, Birchall, Edwards, Whitley

Football / Is There Progression in T&T Football?
« on: July 15, 2005, 08:30:38 AM »
Granted, I have been away from Trini for a minute, but even if I think of the U14, U17 and U19 teams I remember, there hasn’t seemed to be a natural progression of consistency, i.e. the nucleus of a particular team remaining together and progressing on to the senior level, even as a trickle as younger players replace veterans.

I think if there is a “near” constant among the traditional, successful football powers, it is the progression of talent from youth through to senior level.

Is there such a progression in T&T? If not, how can we ever develop consistency, strength and dominance that all the fans here desperately want and clamor for?

I remember reading in another post here, something to the effect: “we are striving to develop a squad versus developing football in Trinidad.” I think there is a lot of substance in that statement. It points to us repeating a cycle every so often, of scrambling to put 22 men together for WCQ or for Gold CUP or for whatever tournament comes along. Is that the case in T&T?

Football / TnT Greatest Players
« on: May 17, 2005, 07:13:32 AM »

Man, I was pleasantly surprised to see Ian Clauzel listed among TnT's
greatest players. I was at the Mucurapo/John-D game cited in the article in
the Dread Dribbler. I saw Clauzel do things on the soccer field that I have
never seen anywhere else, and mind you, I lived in Germany for 3 years and
saw games at the highest level. I went to CIC and was in Form 1 & 2 in 77
and 78. I remember Clauzel was all over the Express and Guardian when he
hit the scene so I went to see him when Mucurapo played Tranquil on CIC
grounds. From then, I was mesmerized and did all I could to see every
Mucurapo game after that. Just the other day, I was telling another Trini
here, that Clauzel was certainly, the most entertaining, and in my biased
opinion, the best player ever to play in the Colleges League. Maybe that is
only because I saw him play, personally, on many occasions. I am glad to
know that Moose is alive and well.
