Football / Worawi Makudi faces prospect of Fifa ethics committee inquiry
« on: November 02, 2011, 11:12:48 AM »
for misuse of football development funding. What are the checks and balance to prevent misuse of FIFA funding?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/15437574.stm

Fifa says Thai football boss Worawi Makudi will face a formal investigation by its ethics committee unless he provides proof by 1 December he did not misuse $860,000 (£535,000) of football development funding.

Thailand FA president and Fifa executive committee member Makudi is accused of using money for football projects on land that he personally owns, an allegation he denies. He maintains that the legal title for the land was transferred to the Football Association of Thailand (Fat).

A Fifa statement said: "After an in depth analysis of the documentation received so far, Fifa still considers further confirmation is required from Mr Makudi that the land has legally been donated to the Thai FA and that this donation is effective.

"Fifa has therefore asked Mr Makudi to provide by 1 December 2011 the legal provisions and documentation that would confirm this donation of land.

Should Fifa not receive the requested legal confirmation from Mr Makudi by that date, then the matter would be referred to the ethics committee

"Should Fifa not receive the requested legal confirmation by that date, the matter would be referred to the ethics committee."

The allegations, which first appeared in a Swiss newspaper in August, claim an artificial football pitch and new headquarters for Fat were built on land personally owned by Makudi.

It is also alleged that Makudi owns other plots of land around the headquarters in the Nong Jok district, near Bangkok.

The funding for both the artificial football pitch and the headquarters came from Fifa's Goal programme, which provides money to help national associations that lack the resources to develop football in their country.

Makudi would be the sixth senior Fifa executive to face an ethics hearing since October 2010 if he is unable to provide Fifa with the information it has demanded. It is understood he would face charges in connection with a possible breach of section five of the organisation's code of ethics.

Makudi sent 30 pages of land registration documents to the Zurich offices of Fifa on 21 October this year in a bid to clear his name.

"While performing their duties, officials shall avoid any situation that could lead to conflicts of interest.

"Conflicts of interest arise if officials have, or appear to have, private or personal interests that detract from their ability to perform their duties as officials with integrity in an independent and purposeful manner.

"Private or personal interests include gaining any possible advantage for himself, his family, relatives, friends and acquaintances."

Fat received $460,000 (£285,000) of Fifa Goal programme funding in 2004 to build an artificial football pitch.

An additional $400,000 (£250,000) was given in 2007 to build a three-story headquarters to provide Fat "the necessary space for professional leadership and administrative structures," according to Fifa's website.

Additional money from the Goal programme, also intended for the Nong Jok complex, was approved by Fifa in October 2010.

Fifa has confirmed to the BBC that the money was allocated "for rehabilitation work and [the] purchase of equipment".

However, in the wake of the allegations against Makudi the project has been suspended and the work will not continue until Fifa is satisfied over who owns the land.

In May, Lord Triesman, the former Football Association chairman, alleged to a Parliamentary committee that Makudi had demanded the TV rights for a proposed friendly game between England and Thailand in return for his World Cup 2018 vote. Makudi denied that was the case.

An inquiry into Triesman's claims was then instigated by the FA. It did not find any further evidence to support the allegation.

General Discussion / Rougier: No search for senior officers
« on: December 28, 2010, 12:45:19 AM »
This is ah rel dotish man, I swear. He once said that prisons don't need computer system because his officers have photographic memory.

‘Corruption in junior ranks’
By Akile Simon akile.simon@trinidadexpress.com

Story Created: Dec 26, 2010 at 11:54 PM ECT

(Story Updated: Dec 26, 2010 at 11:55 PM ECT )

PRISONS COMMISSIONER John Rougier says he does not intend to subject his senior officers to scrutiny searches while entering the prisons because statistics have shown that the corrupt officers were within the junior ranks.
Rougier also said that Ceron Richards, secretary of the Prisons Officers’ Second Division Association (POA), is “farse and out of place” when Richards called for searches to be conducted on senior prisons officers.
Richards, during a radio programme last week, stated that, “We (POA) are not in support of any one-dimensional approach which is mainly just prisons officers being searched and more so prison officers in the Second Division.
“Trafficking of illegal contraband and items are human behaviour. Therefore it is reasonable to assume that all persons entering the prisons should be given equal treatment, because they are potentially equal in terms of being exposed to illegal activities.”
He said, “One of the things we would like to see happen with this new initiative is that all persons, all persons in within the prison system and stakeholders are searched before entering the prisons,” Richards stated.
Three weeks ago, there were allegations that a senior officer assigned to the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca, had given a prisoner a quantity of marijuana and other contraband items.
A search was conducted on the inmate’s cell but the drug was found in the court yard. Police who were called to the facility believe that the inmate tossed the drug through his window moments before the search.
One of the officers who conducted a search at the inmate’s cell was subsequently transferred to the Port of Spain State Prison, the Express was told.
In response to Richards’s statement, Commissioner Rougier said he stands firm in his decision that his senior officers would not go through scrutiny searches because the officers are not involved in the trafficking of drugs and contraband into the prisons.
Rougier said, “I would not allow my senior officers to come out of their cars to go through a baggage scanner system. What is happening is that we have systems in place where we search under people’s cars and that their trunks will be opened.”
“All officers including senior officers would be subjected to that, but I am not prepared to have my senior officers come out of their car and go through a baggage scanner.  Mr Richards farse with himself... as far as I am concerned he is farse and out of place,” Rougier said during a telephone interview on Friday.
He added, “The thing about it is that they (POA) are bringing a lot of allegations to distract from the problems in the systems where the rogue and young officers are concerned, and are always trying to bring my senior officers in the fray.”
Rougier said he was certain that his senior officers are not engaged in the illegal trafficking trade within the prisons.
“I know my senior officers and they are not corrupt officers. When they come to a station to do their work and carry out supervision and monitor the same junior officers. I trust my senior officers and let me tell you something, my senior officers are not involved in this trafficking,” he said.
“People could say what they want, but I know my senior officers and they are not involved in this drug trafficking and bringing in cell phones and all this sort of thing for inmates.
He added, “I am confident about that and as a matter of fact they (senior officers) have been putting pressure on junior officers... Mr Richards is only farse with himself and that’s the level of disrespect that Mr Richards and the association have for senior officers. That is what is creating the indiscipline within the service where a man can go on the radio and speak that disrespect, going to the public and implying that senior officers are involved in trafficking,” Rougier said.
However, in response to Rougier’s statements, president of the POA Rajkumar Ramroop yesterday maintained that both senior and junior officers should go through the same level of searches.
He said there are similar systems in prisons across the Caribbean, where every member of staff is subjected to scrutiny searches.
“If they have nothing to hide, they going through the scanner with the bags and baggage should not be a problem,” Rajkumar said.
He called on National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy and Minister in the Ministry of National Security Subhas Panday to ensure that every prison officer is searched upon entering penal facilities.
Rajkumar also issued a call to Sandy and Panday to ensure that the Prison Service Amendment Act, which deals with corrupt prisons officers, searching of officers among other things, be proclaimed by President George Maxwell Richards.

Cricket Anyone / Ganga hits WICB’s lack of professionalism
« on: March 30, 2010, 06:33:58 AM »
http://guardian.co.tt/sports/cricket/2010/03/30/ganga-hits-wicb-s-lack-professionalism

“The structure of cricket in the West Indies is not a professional one, it is a very amateur structure.” This was the opinion shared by T&T Cricket captain, Daren Ganga, as he delivered his presentation on ‘You, The Leader’ on the first day of the Thinking Sport Symposium. The Theme of this year’s edition is entitled ‘Our Heroes, Their Stories’, at the Cascadia Hotel, St Ann’s yesterday. Asked what was his greatest challenge on or off the field, by one of the eager participants of the annual symposium hosted by the Sports Desk, a non-profit organisation chaired by Trinidad Guardian Sports Editor, Valentino Singh, Ganga responded; “Being consistent at the highest level.”

Ganga went on to explain that as a young player introduced to the West Indies system, he noticed that there was no structure in place for rehabilitating players. “When a player does well and he gets the opportunity to play at the highest level, if for some strange reason that player goes off the boil a bit, that player is obviously dropped because it’s international cricket and we are expected to perform at a certain level,” said the highly successful T&T skipper. “A lot is left up to the player, there is no framework to take that player forward, to communicate to that player, what their deficiencies are and how they can get back to the level they want to be, so that they can perform at the highest level.” He added that off the field a number of problems afflict West Indies cricket and this does not help the player. “Off the field, is the greatest challenge, where things such as plane tickets, accommodation, training uniforms, sponsorship and other things that people don’t really think about, are a problem in the West Indies, contributing to its unprofessionalism.

Asked if he could change one thing about his cricketing career, Ganga said; “I would start my career a little later.” Following Ganga, T&T’s Miss World 1986, Giselle La Ronde West, facilitated her topic, ‘Beauty in Sport’, sharing her experience in the beauty industry and her life as an athlete and a professional. La Ronde West impressed upon the 150-plus students present at the Cascadia ballroom, that maintaining a balance between the sport and academics, or in her case, sport and beauty, is essential to being an all-round individual. La Ronde West, who beat popular actress Halle Berry, the year she took the Ms World crown, said where her height and wardrobe were deficient, her attitude, and desire to learn about others and tell the world about her country, proved to be, as she believed, the deciding factor in her victory.

Rounding off the first day, was motivational speaker, Don La Foucade, who, in his usually animated way, spoke on ‘Positive Vibes’ as he used his gift of words, to inspire those present to believe in themselves. “True beauty has everything to do with what’s on the inside. Nobody can make you feel unhappy unless you give them permission,” said La Foucade. Earlier in the morning, title sponsor, bmobile, made their presence felt, with greetings from Camille Salandy, head of public relations and external affairs, TSTT, who explained that the company often looks for investment opportunities such as the Symposium, and as such, the TSTT Foundation was shaped out of their interest in helping young people. The symposium continues today at the same venue where, the students will be facilitated by Olympic Committee general secretary, Brian Lewis, sport analyst and swim coach, Anil Roberts and national 100 and 200 metre hurdler Jehue Gordon.

Since 2006, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been orbiting Mars, currently circling approximately 300 km (187 mi) above the Martian surface. On board the MRO is HiRISE, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera, which has been photographing the planet for several years now at resolutions as fine as mere inches per pixel. Collected here is a group of images from HiRISE over the past few years, in either false color or grayscale, showing intricate details of landscapes both familiar and alien, from the surface of our neighboring planet, Mars. I invite you to take your time looking through these, imagining the settings - very cold, dry and distant, yet real. (35 photos total)

Football / 'Gustine' rolls past 'Caps': St Augustine 3 - 0 Carapichaima
« on: November 19, 2009, 08:14:11 PM »
'Gustine' rolls past 'Caps' 3-0.
Justin Henry (schoolsportcentre.com).

St Augustine Secondary defeated Carapichaima by 3-0 at the Larry Gomes Stadium, and kept their dream of capturing all four Secondary Schools Football titles alive by advancing to the semi-final of the National Intercol competition.

'Gustine' will face a more stern test when they meet South giants Naparima College in the Coca-Cola National Intercol semi-final being played on Thursday 26th November at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium.

The game was more evenly matched that the scoreline suggests, with Carapichaima actually enjoying more of the ball in the first half.

Despite their possession, 'Caps' failed to create any clear cut goal scoring opportunities against a very disciplined St. Augustine defense. Chances were also rare for St Augustine, but they did open the scoring in the first half when Dinell Lopez rose first to a corner to head the ball home.

St Augustine made two key switches in the second half as Coach Michael Grayson introduced substitutes Xavier Navarro and Aeion Charles. It was their introduction which changed the complexion of the match.

Aeion Charles scored the second goal when he got onto the end of a through ball from midfield, pushed forward into the penalty box and shot to goal. 'Caps' goalkeeper Akeel Alfred appeared to have the shot covered, but the ball took a wicked deflection off the Carapichaima last stopper before finding its way into the roof of the net.

The goal was a cruel blow to Caripichaima and the team lost their shape on the pitch as a result, allowing St Augustine to dominate proceedings with their swift counter attacks. The 'Caps' players began to show their frustration, and tempers began to flare, causing the referee to stop play for altercations as a result of off the ball incidents.

St Augustine never lost focus and sealed the victory when they got their third goal on another lethal counter attack.

This time it was Stefon Pierre who picked up the ball in midfield and ran through the heart of the Carapichaima defense and released a left footed strike in the bottom left hand corner of the goal, giving keeper Alfred no chance.

'Gustine' were through to the semi-finals, and for yet another season, Carapichaima failed reflect the same dominance they showed in the Central league, against opposition from other zones.

It wasn't all positive for St. Augustine though, as the victory came at a high price. 'Gustine' will have to face Naparima College without midfield maestro and skipper, Jevaughn Vance, who will miss the next game through suspension after picking up his second yellow card in consecutive games.
'Green Machine' cruise into semis.
By: Roger Seepersad (T&T Express).

St Augustine kept their quest for a clean sweep of titles alive when they defeated Carapichaima in a Coca Cola National InterCol quarterfinal fixture, at Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, yesterday.

’Gustine’, who lost to ’Caps’ at the same stage in last year’s tournament, were able to come away with a 3-0 victory this time around thanks to goals from Dinelle Lopez, substitute Aeion Charles and Stefon Pierre.

The ’Green Machine’ went ahead in the 32nd minute through a corner which Lopez headed into the back of the net after the Carapichaima keeper Akiel Alfred failed to clear. ’Gustine’ could have gone in front much earlier had skipper Jevaughn Vance done more with Vernell Ramirez’s 17th minute pass which left him with only the keeper and defender Dennis Hunte to beat. It was Hunte who came out on top as he made a crucial tackle to keep the Central champs in the game.

Carapichaima also had a good opportunity to go ahead three minutes earlier when Isiah Rivers’ cross was sent wide by Anton Gill, not troubling ’Gustine’ keeper Kerron Jones.

A defensive blunder in the 45th could have given the Green Machine a 2-0 lead at the half. Tevin Dick lost out to Ramirez just outside the penalty area, but Alfred was quickly off his line to make a close range save.

In the second period, however, Carapichaima were hit with a barrage of attacks from ’Gustine’ and it was only a matter of time before the East champs went 2-0 up.

The second goal came when Charles fought his way inside the penalty area and struck a fierce drive that Alfred had no chance of stopping.

And the nail in the coffin came three minutes from time, Pierre doing the honours after another breakdown at the back for Carapichaima. St Augustine will now face Naparima in the semifinal round on November 26.

Football / 'El Do' shock 'Pres': Presentation 2 (3) - (4) 2 El Dorado
« on: November 18, 2009, 05:48:04 PM »
El Do shock Pres, book final four spot.
By: Kern De Freitas (T&T Express).

El Dorado East Secondary’s brave ’Blue Thunder’ sounded their intentions to go all the way in Coca Cola InterCol, dumping out Presentation College at the quarter-final stage 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

After a perfect four from four shots, Keron Bethelmy missed ’El Do’s’ final effort, but goalkeeper Christian Edwards saved two ’Pres’ kicks, the first from Rodney Young, and the last from Kevin Moodie, to spare El Dorado’s blushes and send them into the final four after a 2-2 regulation time score.

Goals by Shaquille Smith and Daniel Cyrus helped El Dorado survive 90 minutes, after captain Wesley John and Amare Thomas had helped Pres take the lead after they had fallen behind early.

Before Presentation even had time to settle, they conceded due to hesitant defending. On five minutes, national youth player Cyrus shrugged of the half-hearted challenges of a few defenders, and muscled his way towards the 18-metre box, before slipping the ball to Smith who had the simple task of shooting past Wesley Douglas in Pres’ goal.

Despite the early advantage, El Dorado played rather negatively in the first half, sitting back and waiting for the counter attack.

This allowed Pres to push forward as they desperately sought the equaliser before half-time.

Pres striker Tristan Khan was the main offender. He missed at least three clear chances--a 23rd minute blast that rocked the near post, and another in the 35th that flashed past the far post.

Thomas collected the ball at the penalty spot after a defensive mix up, but hit wide, before John showed his teammates how to get it done with a perfect drive past Edwards from the top of the 18-metre box after a pass by Young to lead his team in level at the break.

Barely a minute had gone by after the match resumed when Pres went ahead, Thomas delivering a rocket from outside the area that surprised Edwards, and the South champs had a 2-1 lead.

They piled the pressure on, trying to put the result beyond doubt. But against the run of play and all the pressure, found themselves on equal terms again after giving up a free kick at the edge of the area in the 66th. Cyrus stepped up with a beauty that dipped at the last minute, completely fooling Douglas as it slipped through his attempted swat, onto the underside of the crossbar and over the line.

John could have put Pres back ahead but he twice headed onto the crossbar.

Regulation time ended with the teams deadlocked at 2-2, although Keelon Joseph forced a late save from substitute Pres ’keeper Terrence Ramsaroop. But El Do held their nerves when it mattered, and Edwards kept Pres out to send his team through.
El Dorado to face St Mary’s in semifinals.
By: Kevin Sunich (T&T Guardian).

Custodian Christian Edwards was the hero as El Dorado East ended Presentation South’s season with a 4-3 win on penalty kicks in their Secondary Schools Football League 2009 Coca Cola National Intercol quarterfinal match at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, yesterday.

Edwards saved kicks from Rodney Young and Kevin Moodie who had a chance to level the score at 4-4 after the south zone champs penalty kicks specialist custodian Terrence Ramsaroop blocked Keron Bethelmy’s kick. Pres had but only itself to blame as it failed to convert countless opportunities.

The match started at a fast pace with both teams looking for the opening item, but it was the “Blue Thunder” that took the early advantage. National youth player Daniel Cyrus picked up the ball on a counter attack, dribbled past four Pres players before releasing Shaquille Smith on the far left.

Smith collected the ball cleanly and travelled into the box before sending a shot past Custodian Wesley Douglas to make it 1-0 in the 5th minute. The south champs went after the equalizer, however its marksmen especially Tristan Khan seemed to be just wide of the mark on most of the attempts.

It would, however, get a boost heading into the second half as captain Wesley John fired a low shot from outside the 18-yard box, which left Edwards helpless in the goal to make it 1-1 in time added on.

Pres came out in the second period still on a high after scoring on the stroke ofthe first half, and on its second attack took the lead. Amare Thomas received a pass just outside the box on the left side and fired a bomb which left Edwards as a spectator in the 47th minute to make it 2-1.

This goal seemed to have taken the wind out of El Do and Pres was looking set for the semis as it continued to run at its opponents defence at will. They, however, continued to miss chances, which eventually turned around to haunt them as El Do pulled one out of the blues.

Against the run of play Cyrus on one of the east zone runners-up few attacks up to this point, was fouled on the left side just outside the 18-yard box in the 65th minute.

He stepped up to take the free kick in the 66th and sent a shot which sailed just over the hands of Douglas and into the right side of the net to make it 2-2. This goal brought back life into the El Do players and its small group of supporters. Pres on the other hand went in search of the winner, with a number of runs, and would count itself a touch unlucky after not being awarded a penalty for a handled ball in the box.

But in the end the “Blue Thunder” which had all but one of its players in its half ofthe field, was able to hold on until the end of regulation time. El Do will now face north zone league champs St Mary on Tuesday in semifinal action.

Yesterday’s Results

EL DORADO 2 (Shaquille Smith 5th, Daniel Cyrus 66th) vs PRESENTATION 2 (Wesley John 46th, Amare Thomas 47th).
El Do won 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Green Machine crush Barataria 13-0.
By: Kern De Freitas (T&T Express).

Class was undoubtedly in session yesterday at Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar as St Augustine Secondary delivered a telling lesson--in the form of a 13-0 hammering--to newly-promoted East Zone Senior Division winners Barataria South Secondary in East Zone Coca Cola InterCol quarter-final action.

On the surface, it looked like a hazing ritual, as evidenced by a 4-0 half-time scoreline. It turned out to be a full-blown assault with a second-half beaver-trick by midfielder Dwayne Salazar and a double by Zavion Navarro, after ’Green Machine’ captain Jevaughn Vance notched a brace in the first period.

Barataria were out of their league and it showed early on, but they kept the scoresheet clean for half the opening session, largely because St Augustine’s shooting compass let them down.

But Stefon Pierre changed that in the 25th minute, putting away Theon James’s corner kick despite Barataria goalkeeper Shkeel Johnson getting a palm to it.

Barataria did not look horrendous coming forward and flashes of potential could be seen there. But the gap in class and experience between the teams was unmistakeable and Barataria were able to make few soujourns forward because of the constant need to defend.

Three more goals came in six minutes before the break. First, Nikkel Collymore struck in the 39th, then skipper Vance doubled up in the 41st and 44th minutes, twice chipping a hapless Johnson, who did get a hand to the second effort.

Things got no better in the second period and the Green Machine had doubled their lead by 70 minutes.

Collymore resumed the onslaught in the 54th, following a procession of misses by his teammates, and Aeion Charles (64th) also hit net, while substitute Navarro made it 7-0 with his first touch of the match.

Salazar beat Johnson four times inside the last 21 minutes, including a banana kick from the corner flag, and Brian Hernandez put the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) ’Big Five’ champions into double figures in the 83rd.

Navarro finally put an emphatic full stop on the scoring in the 90th and the onslaught was finally over.

Arima North Secondary would have looked on worriedly as St Augustine piled on the goals, as they are the next team in line to face the rumbling Green Machine in the East semi-finals on Saturday at the Malabar venue.

Arima got past Trinity College East in the second match at ’Larry Gomes’ yesterday with second half items from Kyle Campbell and Nicholas Armstrong.

Start time 20.00 (14.30 GMT)

Big Picture

A game between two under-rated teams that have shown they are not to be trifled with. Trinidad & Tobago are one of the two unbeaten teams in the tournament, emphasising their dangerousness with a stunning four-wicket victory in a high-scoring encounter against a strong New South Wales on Friday.

With four points and a solid net run-rate (+1.438) they have one foot in the semi-finals; only an embarrassing big defeat to Eagles couple with a New South Wales win over Somerset can jeopardise their chances. Their trio of spinners have proved hard to handle, allrounder Dwayne Bravo is the tournament's leading wicket-taker, captain Daren Ganga is winning plaudits for his inspired leadership and their young aggressive batsmen have piled on the runs - not much to complain about for T&T so far.

They need to be wary of their opponents on Sunday, the Eagles, who have improved with every game. They were outclassed by NSW in their opening game, scraped through to the second round courtesy the win over Sussex through the one-over eliminator, and sauntered to a convincing five-wicket victory over Somerset. They need a massive victory against T&T to boost their abysmal net run-rate (-1.107) to qualify for the semi-final (though a win by any margin will do if NSW lose to Somerset earlier in the day). One of the Eagles' strengths is their fast-bowling allrounders - Ryan McLaren, Alan Kruger, Dillon du Preez - who ensure they bat deep and give Boeta Dippenaar plenty of bowling options.

Watch out for

In the opening rounds, Kieron Pollard set tongues wagging more with his funky hairstyles than his cricketing prowess. After he dismantled Moises Henriques on his way to a jaw-dropping 18-ball 54 against NSW, it is his big-hitting that is getting all the attention. Powell's batting prowess and exuberant personality should make him irresistible to IPL teams; the ka-ching of a fat contract can't be far away.

Morne van Wyk was a pivotal member of the Eagles' run to the finals of the Pro20 earlier this year. He was the highest run-getter in that tournament, and has proved to be the glue that holds a top-order together here as well. An unfussy 47 against Somerset which ensured the small target was easily overhauled showcased his value.

The German Shepherd Breed Club of T&T (TGSBCTT) is hoping to create history at the upcoming 22nd WUSV World Schutzhund Championships 2009, at Krefeld, Germany. The event kicks off on Thursday and ends on Sunday, and, for the first time, this country has sent a delegate to participate in the K-9 competition. Twenty-nine year-old Vithala Singh of El Dorado with his K9 partner, Xito Vom Conneforde, will represent this country for a chance to be the number one K9 athlete team in the world. They will compete in three phases of Schutzhund, which are, tracking, obedience and protection. They will come up against some of the best dogs and trainers in the world, from 41 other countries carded to be part of the prestigious dog event.

Singh, an avid dog enthusiast is also a martial arts teacher. In 2003 he was a founding member of The German Shepherd Breed Club of T&T. The German Shepherd Breed Club of T&T is a member club of the World Union of German Shepherd Clubs (WUSV) with headquarters in Germany. In giving some history about the sport, Singh said the dog world in this country for decades, was dominated with English imports, due to quarantine restrictions, primarily from show bloodlines. These bloodlines make up the vast majority of the German Shepherd breed which is overseen by the local T&T Kennel Club.

Singh and his associates have imported West German, East German and Czech and Slovak Bloodline dogs, and created their own trend of dog on the island. “We were getting dogs from an entirely new gene pool and although we had to endure the wait for our dogs in quarantine both locally and in the UK. In the end, it was worth it,” he said. At the competition, Singh is relying on his long time friend and coach, Ivan Balabanov, to put the finishing touches on his routine. Also in Germany to lend support is his advisor and mentor Ajay Singh of Southern California and Christopher Seeyave, Information Officer of T&T Royal Canin distributor.

General Discussion / Honduras coup warning for T&T—Panday

This asshole should be charged with Sedition.

Published: 30 Jun 2009

Leader of the Opposition Basdeo Panday says the military coup in Honduras should be seen as a warning for T&T. Panday said this in response to questions on Sunday’s bloodless coup, in which the military seized power from Manuel Zelaya, the democratically-elected President of the Central American country. He was taken to Costa Rica, and new interim leader, Roberto Macheeletti, has imposed a curfew. Panday said such developments would occur in any country when the democratic means of change were blocked.

“I have been saying that when you block the democratic channels for change, people are going to resort to violence. What has happened in Honduras is a warning for Trinidad. ”Mr Manning is lucky he did not get his jet,” Panday said. Asked if he was condoning the coup, Panday said it was not a matter for him to condone or not to condone. “That was a peripheral issue.” Prime Minister Patrick Manning, in a statement hours after the coup, had called for the immediate restitution of Zelaya. Meanwhile, the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) has joined an increasing list of international organisations which have condemned the military coup on Sunday morning.

Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was ousted from power by the military in a bloodless coup and taken to Costa Rica because he was proceeding with a referendum in defiance of the Supreme Court there, which ruled the initiative to be illegal. The ACS, which is headquarted in Port-of-Spain, said it adhered to the position of the Central American Integration System (CISA), the Rio Group and other international organisations that have condemned “the violation of the constitutional and democratic order in Honduras.”

The ACS added that it also condemned the way the Honduras military personnel treated the country’s Foreign Minister, Patricia Rodas, and the Ambassadors of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. “The situation is a serious violation of international law, and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. “This rupture of the constitutional order is unacceptable, and the ACS reiterates and demands his restitution as president of the republic.”

General Discussion / Speaker suspends heated House
« on: May 09, 2009, 03:59:48 AM »
No story on why the woman interupted the session though. What is her story.

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article_news?id=161475205
Anna Ramdass aramdass@trinidadexpress.com

There was a heated sitting of the House of Representatives yesterday, as tempers flared and venom spewed between the People's National Movement (PNM) and the United National Congress (UNC) in two separate incidents.

In the first incident, House Speaker Barendra Sinanan was forced to suspend the sitting of the House and in the second, he ordered that a woman who was sitting in the public gallery, and who interrupted the sitting with her outburst, be forcibly removed from the Chamber.

The fireworks began when Works Minister Colm Imbert raised the UNC's dirty laundry in the House and made reference to recent statements by Opposition MP Jack Warner against his colleagues on a public platform.

"I find it very difficult to stand here and listen to allegations of impropriety and integrity from the members opposite. That's a bitter pill to swallow," Imbert said.

He was speaking on the Opposition's private motion which called for the removal of Karen Nunez-Tesheira as Finance Minister.

Imbert, reading from a newspaper article, highlighted Warner's claims that he paid the salaries of UNC members for some nine months to the tune of some $1.4 million when there was a general election tie. He also made reference to claims by Tabaquite MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, that Warner had paid Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday's legal fees and saved him from selling his house.

Panday became visibly angry and shouted, "Lie! Don't cast aspersions on us when you have money in Grenada! Don't do that!"

Imbert continued making reference to Warner's statements as Panday and other members of the Opposition front bench retaliated.

"Honourable member for Couva North. Please. Order!" shouted Sinanan.

"He's casting aspersions on us when his owns hands are dirty!" yelled Panday.

"You know I like you in the House, so please," Sinanan told Panday, advising him to answer to Imbert when he makes his own contribution.

Imbert continued informing the Speaker that he would ask that the standing orders of the House be invoked to end the sitting, if Opposition members continued imputing improper motives on him.

Opposition MP Kelvin Ramnath shot back, "Who the hell you think you are?"

A frustrated Sinanan then said, "No, no, no, now please!"

He added that it was not right for members to behave in this manner.

As he continued to face objections and arguments from the Opposition, he said, "I am warning all members I intend for this sitting to go smoothly. If any member misbehaves you stand the possibility of being put out. I am not making any jokes."

Panday rose to his feet and, quoting the relevant standing orders, said Imbert was imputing improper motives against the Opposition.

The Speaker allowed Imbert to continue and he smiled, saying, "I don't know why they are so jumpy." Again, the verbal attacks from both sides continued.

Sinanan rose again, saying he was very impressed with Panday's recent statements about wanting to return the Parliament to its pristine glory. He again called for peace.

Imbert continued, saying he had told no lies and only wanted to point out the hypocrisy of the Opposition.

"You don't worry about our issues. Worry about the $6 million in Grenada," said Panday, as he mumbled that Warner had made a deal with Imbert.

The bitter cross-talk continued and Sinanan rose again.

"I'll tell you what, I'm going to suspend the sitting of this House for five minutes in which time I am inviting members to cool down and cool their tempers."

He then left the Chamber, leaving the MPs to continue arguing during the suspended time.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning walked in and wore an expression of surprise as he met the uproar and was given an update by his colleagues.

After five minutes the debate resumed and as Imbert tried to bring up the issue again, but the Speaker ordered that he not make reference to it again.

However, as Opposition MP Vasant Bharath was on his feet making his contribution, there was another outburst, this time from the public gallery.

"Allyuh want to kill me and my children! Allyuh want to kill me!" shouted a woman, later identified as Arima resident Millicent Reid.

All members froze in silence.

Manning, who was making an exit, stopped in his tracks and looked at the woman.

"Remove that person from the House. Remove that stranger from the House!" Sinanan ordered as the woman continued her outburst.

A team of police held the woman by her arms and dragged her out of the Chamber as she moaned, "Oh God, somebody help me! Somebody help me! Please! Oh God!"

It was only last month that another woman had also interrupted the House sitting and was forced out of the House.

General Discussion / US holds court in Trinidad
« on: May 04, 2009, 09:27:00 PM »
http://guardian.co.tt/news/crime/2009/05/05/us-holds-court-trinidad

The seven accused are: Army Corporal Ricardo De Four, Zion Clarke, Kevon Demerieux, Anthony Straker, Wayne Pierre, Christopher Sealey, and Kevin Nixon. Four other Trinidadians pleaded guilty, Army Sgt Leon Nurse, Jason Percival, Russel “Saucy” Joseph, and Winston Gittens. The Guardian learnt that Nurse and Percival, a former soldier, will be two of the main witnesses for the US Government, having struck a deal with the prosecution, but they also face a prison term, despite the deal and the guilty plea. Five of the accused, who filed a motion to suppress evidence, lost last week. In a 51-page ruling dated April 28, Judge Bates dismissed their claim and ordered them to stand trial.

This Winston Gittens name ring a bell. Can't recall where, thinking Mount Hope secondary.

Arranger Edwin Pouchet and National Panorama winner Silver Stars dared to be different as the preliminary round for the annual Pan in the 21st Century continued on Friday night with conventional bands in the northern region.

Pouchet shocked supporters and pan lovers alike with his arrangement of Rock band Queen's Hall of Fame classic "Bohemian Rhapsody".

If nothing else the song was different from everything heard in the history of the competition. Pouchet said it is time to start thinking outside of the box.

"If we continue with the same type of songs, R&B and Jazz, we will run out of songs to play," he said.

Silver Stars pulled the largest crowd for the night and did not disappoint its audience. The players were very much into the song, feeding off of the vibes to put down a great performance under the direction of conductor Donnel Thomas.

The night kicked off with Caribbean Airlines Invaders and its rendition of Teddy Pendergrass' "When Somebody Loves You Back". From Tragarete Road, the judges went to Charlotte Street at bp Renegades and listened to a spirited version of Stevie Wonder's "Do I Do".

It was refreshing to see the youths of Pandemonium line up behind their instruments to perform Quasi Paul's arrangement of John Legend's "Green Light". Spectators at this panyard said it was one of the best performances for the night.

The next stop was Power Stars, one of the oldest steel orchestras in Trinidad. This band has been going through trials and tribulations over the recent years, including having lost its sponsor, T&TEC. And it was good to see it back into competition, with its complement of "pan babies" -- members are as young as seven years -- playing Victor Antoine's arrangement of Mary J Blige's "Take Me As I am".

Humming Birds Pan Groove easily won the prize for Best T-Shirt on the night. The band wore a beautiful red T-shirt with the national flag in the middle of a pan surrounded by it's name. The orchestra played R Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly".

It was 10.30 p.m. and people were gathered in Eastern Quarry without fear as they waited the judges' arrival at Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille. The band gave the audience six minutes of Tevin Campbell's R&B hit, "Can We Talk", arranged by Ken "Professor" Philmore.

It was a night that truly belonged to the many youths and their parents who came out to participate and support this competition despite the crime problem, especially in the areas of some of the panyards.

I would love to hear Silver Star's rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Pandemonium? What!!!, When did my band get back together. Sweet. :beermug:

Prisoners kaiso in the Square
February 18th 2009

Calypsonians in their own right, the inmates from maximum security at Port of Spain, Golden Grove, Carrera and the women's prison performed before an appreciative crowd at Woodford Square.

Call it kaiso, kaiso.

The onlookers found so, and were disheartened to know that the show was shortened to accommodate Parliament.  What intrigued the audience most was the lyrical content of these bards who sang about this country's climate.  Kaiso Monarch Keith King sang a message of unity, a plea to rebuild the country.
But the crowd wanted more of the sweet voiced Bangladesh Baron.  The annual Inmates Calypso Fiesta is in its ninth year.  Organisers say the 10th edition will be extra special.

Football / Boucaud joins Wycombe Wanderers.
« on: August 09, 2007, 05:10:34 AM »
Boucaud joins Wycombe Wanderers.
(Wycombe Wanderers).

Wycombe have signed midfielder Andre Boucaud following a successful trial with the club. The 22-year-old Trinidad and Tobago international has penned a one-year deal with Wycombe Wanderers and becomes boss Paul Lambert's 11th new signing of the summer. Boucaud, whose former clubs include Reading and Peterborough, has spent the pre-season with the Blues and featured in all their friendly games. He was a free agent after leaving Kettering Town at the end of last season. Lambert told the club's website: "I'm delighted to get Andre. He's been with us for a few weeks and he's done really well in training and in our pre-season games. "He's only 22, but he plays older than his years and he's a gritty competitor who is also very good on the ball. I'm sure that our fans will like him."
"I'm just a player who loves football.
By: Dale Hurman (Wycombe Wanderers).
[/size]

At just 22, you might not have expected midfielder Andre Boucaud have had such a colourful career that has included spells with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur on the one hand and Kettering Town on the other.
After spending almost six weeks on trial with the Blues Andre is happy to have signed his contract. He said: "It's a relief I've signed, I've signed for a year. Now I can get my head and prove myself really."
He spoke about the early years of career that saw him move across London from Queens Park Rangers to Tottenham Hotspur and then to Reading. "He (then Reading manager Alan Pardew) is the man who really gave me my opportunity in football. He went on to West Ham and left me behind. It was quite difficult."
He then explained his move from the Royals to the Posh in summer of 2004. "I wasn't playing at Reading so I decided to go on loan it was a great experience. Obviously it helped me because when my Reading contract came to an end I had a club, I didn't have to go on trial so it helped me very well."
"I played a lot of games for them, obviously being on loan twice and signing permanently. As everyone knows about Peterborough it was a bit up and down, new managers and stuff like that so it's difficult to get your foot in and play week in week out."
After leaving London Road last summer, Boucaud found himself playing with Kettering Town in the Conference North. Andre explained: "At the end of the day it was a reality check. I went down there and there's not much football being played, it's a lot more physical, but at the end of the day it was football and I needed to show that my head's right and I can get down and play football."
Having spent some time with the Blues this summer, Andre is grateful for the opportunity. "They're a nice bunch of lads here, great manager, good assistant and I'm just grateful they gave me the opportunity and I'm glad to be here and playing football."
Andre was asked why he might not yet have fulfilled the potential of his early years and he responded: "Who knows, maybe it was me, maybe it was people's opinions of me. Maybe I didn't know when to shut my mouth when I should have. But you live and learn, I'm only 22, it's not too late hopefully I'm putting the right foot forward and taking it from there."
"My head's right, I'm here to work hard and hopefuly get Wycombe into League One"
When asked what kind of player he considered himself, Andre said: "I'm just a player who loves football, I like to get it down and pass. It's how football should be played. It doesn't mean to say just beause you're in a lower division you can't play football and win the league. I believe if you're good enough you can do it."
During a tough League Two season there will be times when it's something of battle and Andre said: "Well going down into non-league, Conference North you have to put your foot in because if you don't you just get bullied and hopefully that's done me well going down there. "
