Football / Is Wim solely to blame?
« on: April 02, 2007, 04:35:20 PM »
Wim has been with us a decent amount of time now and many of us are not pleased with the result. (Myself included)

At first I thought  he should have extended his hand to the local football fraternity and bring them aboard. A lil analysis however  brought me to the realization that it is Trinis we dealing with. Who in they right mind would want to bring in men who will undermine and divide and talk everything down? Who does fight down each other more than trinis?  Rum talk, picong whatever we call it, we all know it never falls into the category of Constructive criticism.

These are the things I see Wim having to contend with.  English is not the man first language. (Hence tact and euphamisms might be hard. ) Trinis does picong and rub everybody but fellow Trinidadians wrong. We culturally have a laid back mentality in everything. (Hurricane and curfew party). He doh have an open budget. Jabloteh give the man stress with player selection. He is in Beenie's shadow with way less talent at his disposal. We suffer from Trini tunnel vision. (We have the best women, beer, food, footballers etc. in the world) We believe everything can be fixed in a day so we does start the day before. We are the kings of post mortem analysis but when is time to put a plan foward everybody quiet. He dealing with the TTFF.

So my next thought is okay if Wim don't want to go to the local football fraternity maybe the football fraternity should go to Wim. Stroke the man ego make him feel  important and find out what needs to be going on for them to fit into his plan.  I was looking around but I don't think I have seen any evidence of this going on. I only seeing men firing shots in public.

Maybe  Secondary schools should invite Wim to their training sessions. Maybe the Pro League should sit down with the man and ask him what he sees as the solution to the problem and stop sharpening iron with iron. Maybe the local coaches should unite to devise a youth deveopement strategy and ask for input.

Has the local football fraternity and even we the fans created an environment where Wim feels comfortable to work? Or have we made him defensive and afraid to loose. Maybe if he is approached in a positive way he may open up.

It seems that Wim does not have the leadership ability and charisma that Beenie has. He has however worked with Beenie for a while. I assume he at least has some  football acumen. Maybe he can teach local coaches something. He has an international perspective. He may have seen different approaches to dealing with problems. Maybe he can expose us to new ideas.

I read a thread before where Yorke was saying that Keane borught in people who he could talk and relate to. Yorke himself being one. He also brought Yorke for his dressing room skills. Many articles suggest that this has helped team moral and developement. Wim's Yorke is Densil Theobald.

I just was wondering what are the other perspectives.

Football / Is Ato assisting in player development for the Warriors?
« on: October 04, 2006, 12:03:38 AM »
I remeber Ato saying he was going to work with the players on they speed. Did this even pan out?

Ato should consider making a video for training. It have real men who running and ain't know what they doing right and wrong. This could help our footballers as well as track. It would be nice for him to pass on what he learned.

General Discussion / This man talking bout bannaa republic!!!

Those in glass stadiums...

Wembley Stadium, as seen on Tuesday in London, England. The stadium was due for completion in August 2005. However, Wembley may not be ready in time to host the 2007 FA Cup final in May after Australian construction firm Multiplex revealed that it may not be finished until June 2007.

It's the sort of story usually associated with banana republics. After years of discussion and negotiation, the decision to construct a new national super-stadium is taken. Amid considerable fanfare, the project gets going and everyone looks ahead to the unveiling of the magnificent new facility.

But problems start to crop up. Delays, cost overruns and squabbling between the partners in the consortium all contribute to a hugely expensive fiasco, leaving many to regret that the whole thing was ever undertaken in the first place.

This time, though, we're not talking about the bumbling backwaters of the Caribbean, the endemically corrupt African heartland or the greedy schemers of Asia. This is London, the capital of the United Kingdom, the centre of what was once an expansive British Empire, a city at the very core of a culture that prides itself on propriety, organisational efficiency and a stiff upper lip.

Wembley Stadium, the home of British football since 1923, is a name usually associated with legendary deeds on the pitch. Now, however, it is being dragged through the mud of an incomplete playing surface as a bitter dispute between the builders and owners of the new project rages on.

Maybe the result of last year's Ashes series has something to do with it, but whatever the reason, Multiplex-an Australian construction company-is at loggerheads with Wembley National Stadium Ltd to the extent that a project already three times over the original budget and almost a year behind schedule, could be bogged down even further in all sorts of legal wrangling.

This year's FA Cup Final should have been the curtain-raiser to the new facility, yet now it seems that it won't even be ready for the 2007 showpiece occasion of British football, at least as far as the Aussie builders are concerned. It is the sort of acrimony and bacchanal that is often believed to be the sole preserve of us colonials.

All of this should serve as a timely reminder to those up north who are already rejoicing in ridiculing almost everything associated with the West Indies' hosting of next year's Cricket World Cup. Indeed, as usually applies when the English are here every four years or so for a full tour, several journalists will be coming here for the sole purpose of digging up as much dirt as possible from arrival to departure for the enjoyment of their readership back home.

Speaking of ridiculing, in the midst of last week's launching of World Cup 2007 in India, there were all sorts of stories coming out of the sub-continent about fans there being worried about accommodation, inter-island travel, security, high prices and almost anything else that could come to mind.

Well, there is one guaranteed way to enjoy a hassle-free World Cup: stock up the fridge, stay home and watch it on TV.

Part of travelling to an exotic destination to witness a major international sporting event is to experience the lifestyle and culture of that part of the world. This includes both positive and negative. The Caribbean is one of the world's premier tourist destinations, not just for the sun, sea and sand, but also because of a much more relaxed approach to life.

This "no problem man" principle may seem completely at odds with the super-efficient operations demanded for a global sporting event, and inevitably there will be instances where flights are late, luggage is at another terminal, confirmed hotel bookings mysteriously disappear and the cost of everything, from a taxi to a coconut with medium jelly, seems unreasonably high. These are not new complaints, yet people keep coming, if only to find something new to moan about.

A lot of money is being spent and considerable effort is being expended to ensure that all of these inherent inefficiencies are ironed out as best as possible for the six weeks of the World Cup. There will be sufficient English, American, Australian and other international sports management experts floating around to have enough of us natives on our best behaviour.

Hoteliers, tourism associations and governments are all pitching in, acutely aware that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sell their destinations to the world. Most territories whose economic survival is effectively based on regular arrivals are pulling out all the stops in the hope of cashing in on the extravaganza.

So we are spending money we don't have and constructing stadia and other facilities that will remain on the expenditure side of national budgets for many years to come. But that is our problem. We have chosen to host the Cricket World Cup and all that it entails, and if it means we are all cussing each other and pointing fingers in various directions after April 28, 2007, that is for us to deal with.

Yet no amount of effort can ever guarantee that there won't be problems, some minor, some infuriating and maybe even the occasional one bad enough to regret ever coming here. That's the way it goes, and it is more than likely that those coming for the first time, exercising basic common sense and keeping an open mind about things generally, will look back on the entire experience as an enjoyable one.

You can't please everyone, so there is no use trying. And anyway, every country has a Wembley Stadium-like skeleton in the closet that should temper the eagerness to condemn everything in sight come next March

2006 World Cup - Germany / Theobald keeps cool for England.

Theobald keeps cool for England
http://www.myfootballnews.co.uk/news_jump.html?story=668746

Falkirk midfielder Densill Theobald is not letting unexpected success go to his head after helping Trinidad & Tobago to a fine World Cup start.

Theobald, who failed to break into the Bairns side this season, played for 66 minutes of the 0-0 draw with Sweden.

"We're keeping our cool heads," he said. "We know our next game is our most important game, which is England.

"We will go out there and show the same hard work, the same determination and the same fighting spirit."

But the Soca Warriors face selection problems if they want to build on a surprise draw in their first-ever appearance at the World Cup finals.

Rangers defender Marvin Andrews has tweaked the knee on which he a year ago refused surgery after picking up a cruciate ligament injury.

"It is without doubt the lowest point in my football career"
Trinidad & Tobago goalkeeper Kelvin Jack

He missed the game against Sweden and is a doubt for Thursday's meeting with England.

Coach Leo Beenhakker will also now have to do without New England Revolution left-back Avery John after his sending off against the Swedes.

"It will be difficult to make up for Marvin and Avery," added Theobald.

"We were able to deal with missing Marvin against Sweden. Hopefully, we will be able to deal with missing Avery too."

Former Dundee defender Brent Sancho, now with Gillingham, started in place of Andrews on Saturday.

And Atiba Charles or Evans Wise will most likely replace John in the starting line-up on Thursday.

Kelvin Jack will struggle to win back his starting place in goal after picking up an injury in the warm-up against Sweden.

Jack, out of contract with Dundee, was forced to watch from the bench as veteran Shaka Hislop made a string of crucial saves.

And he admitted: "I was in tears in the dressing-room before the game.

"It is without doubt the lowest point in my football career and all the boys were trying to pick me up.

"That shows the type of spirit there is within the squad, but the result more than any words helped dry away any tears.

"I got a calf injury on Tuesday and tried to shrug it off, but it was tight during the warm-up when I was doing my kicking.

"I didn't want to make it any worse or jeopardise things for the team.

"I hope this is just the beginning of our adventure and there will be more games to come and chances for me to play."

Dundee United forward Collin Samuel started the game along with midfielder Densill Theobald, who did not make one appearance for Falkirk this season.

Rangers' Marvin Andrews dropped to the bench after picking up an injury.

Goalkeeper Kelvin Jack, out of contract with Dundee, was injured in the warm-up and was replaced with Shaka Hislop.

Veteran Falkirk midfielder Russell Latapy and St Johnstone striker Jason Scotland were also on the bench.

Both Theobald and Samuel were substituted during the second half of their country's first-ever appearance at a World Cup finals.

Former Celtic striker Henrik Larsson started up front for the Swedes

L.A.'s Glen named Player of the Week.
Major League Soccer Communications.
[/size]

NEW YORK -- Cornell Glen, the newly acquired striker of the Los Angeles Galaxy, is beginning his Green-and-Gold career with a bang by taking home MLS Player of the Week honors for Week 3 of the 2006 MLS season. Glen made his first start for the Galaxy on April 17, after having arrived on the through a trade with the Colorado Rapids, and he promptly converted two excellent passes from teammate Landon Donovan to give his team a 2-1 win over rivals Chivas USA.
Playing in front of a packed house at The Home Depot Center, Glen was the beneficiary of a superb individual action by Donovan. Streaking by multiple defenders, Donovan chipped the ball back across the box to a wide-open Glen, who coolly slotted home the winner in the third minute of injury time. It was Glen's second goal in nine minutes, after having driven home the tying goal off a knock-down header by Donovan in the 84th minute.
The dramatic come-from-behind-victory gave the Galaxy bragging rights in the first game of four between Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy, both of whom share The Home Depot Center. The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected every week throughout the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).

2006 Player of the Week Winners
Week 1: Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo)
Week 2: Jaime Moreno (D.C. United)
Week 3: Cornell Glen (Los Angeles Galaxy)

Football / The Soca Warriors logo
« on: December 06, 2005, 05:09:58 PM »

I was patiently waiting on somebody to start this thread but ah get tired. If it was started send me the link.

Is it me alone who wondering what that logo have to do with the Soca Warriors?
Okay we had a good fight but that logo does not represent the country. That coulda be any country.
This to me is a reflection of all the dotish decisions that going to be made in managing and marketing the team. Something real wrong if a set ah hard back trini see that and choose that to represent us.
I can tell you from now, if that is the logo they going and put on the merchandise I am boycotting.
Let dwight and the whole team open an account I will contribute there.

Right about now the knock offs on ebay looking nice.  ;D
