Great stuff. Always nice to see us win a series.

But im not gonna get carried away because we need to win a test match (against someone other than Bangladesh).

Hopefully that can happen in our lifetime.

Yep, hopefully  :beermug:

Man Utd were just about good enough last season when Saha was injured but by no means were they unstoppable. A depleted Chelsea side took Man Utd till the penultimate game. Im gonna tell you now that a proud man like Mourinho wants that tittle back bad. If youre happy as Man Utd supporter to go into the new season with one conventional striker with physical presence then thats your choice. But if i was a Man Utd supporter i would be asking serious questions if another striker like Berbatov or Santa Cruz isnt bought bearing in mind the massive amounts bought on the other guys who i would argue are not as important as someone like Berbatov.

What kind of revisionism is this? “Depleted Chelsea team” Who deplete them, not their own management?

And I also seem to remember United playing with several injuries, Saha, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra out for significant spells.

Last time I checked Berbatov was not for sale so there is no sense in harping over buying him. It is not an either or situation and if Tevez is bought there will be no other big-money striker coming in again.

Don’t try to tie up nobody head about how you would be worrying if you was a United fan. That is wishful thinking.

Study how yuh going to play Lampard Number One (Ballack) and Lampard Number Two (Lampard) in the same midfield again and play one setta long ball for Shevchenko.

United have potential for success and potential for problems and so does Chelsea so please don’t try to make it seem like things so sweet down at Chelsea.

I am no Chelsea fan. Im a Spurs man. And i am not trying to take away from Man Utd's achievements of winning the Premiership last season. Why would I, I support Spurs? If you need to hear me say it i will say it- Man Utd deserved to win the tittle.

I am just objectively responding to Dwight Yorke's comments that after the Tevez signing Man Utd will be unstoppable. I disagree for all the reasons i have already said earlier in this topic. I am saying that Man Utd will not be unstoppable unless/until they get another striker in the mold of Berbatov not necessarily him if Spurs wont sell him but someone like him. Thats why i also threw in a name like Santa Cruz.

I think Tevez can be a good signing because i dont expet Nani or Anderson to play a great deal this season, and potentially you could play 2 holding mids with Tevez and Ronaldo starting on both flanks drifting in with Rooney behind Saha.

The query i have is if Man Utd are flashing money about wouldnt it be sensible to cover Saha as well with a natural replacement?

If Saha is injured Man Utd will be short of physical presence up front. Like how Barca were short when Eto'o got injured even though they had plenty skillful players. You can have plenty good players but you need a good balance. Man Utd better hope Saha stays fit if they dont sign another striker who can hold the ball up.

Im not so sure Man Utd will be unstoppable. I am very interested to see how this team will work if Saha is injured.

If Man Utd signed another stiker like a Berbatov or Santa Cruz only then i would say they would be unstoppable.

If???  :rotfl:  How many games did Saha play last season? The beauty of the victory last season is that the goals came from EVERYWHERE. Once the team plays the same fluid style, the goals will come... If Tevez settles, then the rest of the league aint ready for what he bringin... that is a player I coveted for years now (hell, since I saw him in Trini for the World Cup).

RIP to the ManU thread

I don’t know that there is any intention to sell Saha. Tevez is an addition to fill a recognized gap.

I would actually like to see Ronaldo playing a more conventional forward role. When I first saw him I thought that he had all the goods to make a good striker, touch, pace, skill, height, strength, two-footed shooting, heading ability.

He score 20+ goals last season from the wing he might be able to do the same from a more advanced, central position.

If Anderson and Nani really develop on the wings it might be worth trying to convert him.

Yep, i havent heard anything about Man Utd wanting to sell Saha either. My concern for Man Utd would be if Saha were to get injured as he is injury prone.

I feel Man Utd would be better off just buying a back up striker like Santa Cruz rather than converting Ronaldo to a conventional striker, because one of Ronaldo's main strengths is running at defenders with the ball at his feet. If Ronaldo goes as a conventional striker he will have to play with his back to goal for a large part which will take away from his main strength of attacking defenders with the ball at his feet.

Although i do agree Ronaldo also has all the attributes to play as a conventional striker but the question is it worth the sacrifice of taking away his creativity from attacking defenders with the ball at his feet? In my opinion no when a big club like Man Utd can just steal a player like Berbatov from my club Spurs to play that conventional striker role.

You could argue that Ronaldo could change positions like Henry did from wide to central. But in my opinion 20 goals and numerous assists would tell me to keep Ronaldo in the position where he currently is playing.

I must agree with RRamdin. This is one of the worst declines ever. It has even got to the point where i feel the administrators are purposely trying to make the players look bad and leave them undeprepared for matches to embarass the players to take the spotlight away from them. Although the administrators stupid games are not working and we and the media will not take the spotlight of the administrartors we are still in a situation where in some games i dont believe certain members along the hierachy West Indies cricket want the team to perform. The decline will not finish until the current administrators go and competent ones are put in place.

Yes Garcia. Walter Boyd is my choice for who i would most like to watch on pure talent. That man had real skills when he got on the football pitch.

In my opinion Messi. The first leg of the champions league against Chelsea at Chelsea when Barca won 2-1 stands out in my memory when Messi showed why he is class. His whole all round performance. Also remember when Del Horno tried to kill him and he just said laters. Even the acting was good.

I hope Stanford is in it for the long haul. He is the only one around that has money to burn. Big up Stanford (for now anyway- i reserve the right to remove this big up). I read an article about this subject on cricinfo.

http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/stanford2008/content/story/300752.html

2 points to note.

1) He intends to make a profit at some point on the £100m he has invested. ??? Unless some major fraud taking place i cant see that happening for a long time.

2) He reckons West Indies will be a world beating team again in 3 years.  ??? Unless some global warming causes Australia, New Zealand, England, India, Sri Lanka and South Africa to be wiped off the map within 3 years i cant see that happening.

Anyways regardless of these 2 statements he seems to really want to make a difference and we can already see he is doing a lot of planning unlike the West Indies administrators.

12
We may have lost some ability but the players have always had the ability to perform they just for the reasons we have already suggested have not been able to. It is no fluke that our U-15 and U-19 teams are still amongst the best around. The U-15s won the world cup and the U-19s finished runners up. As i have said time and time again- one of the major problem is what happens to these players after U-19 level and more importantly what is going to be done about it?

Without Lara and Sarwan:

Chanderpaul lower down the order = 50 not out

Chanderpaul higher up the order = 100 not out

Although this is over simplified and Chanders will not make runs every time he walks to the wicket, we should still give the team the best chance of winning and surely with the current players available, that means Chanders up the order to face the majority of the deliveries available.

It would be nice to have Gibson somewhere in the West Indies cricket set up. Im not sure that coach of the West Indies is the right place for him with the current administrators because it would be a lose lose situation to be coach of the West Indies at the moment. As Savannah Boy said- he would be better off having a role in an academy for the time being. Do we have an academy?

I also saw this and its nice to hear an ex player like Lara say he is willing to do this. But Lara should be very careful that his time isnt wasted by working under the WICB. Maybe Lara should have a word with Standford and them two fix something up without the disadvantage of having to work with the current administrators of the WICB.

With Lara now retired, over the last 10 West Indian innings Chanderpaul has been either not out or has had to give his wicket away because he was batting with the tail. Chanderpaul is in the form of his life and it is being wasted with him batting at 5 because he has no partners to bat with. He should move up the order.

i think we should have toured zimbabwe, players like jaggy and barath would have got some valuable experience which would have benefitted us in the long run..

God is de BOSS....

Jaggy and Barath would get more valuable experience playing beach cricket in Trinidad than playing the current Zimbabwe side.

I love 20/20, but i take it for what it is. The real form of cricket is test cricket but i still love to watch a game of 20/20.

In the bowling department the skills used in 50 over cricket still apply- you have to bowl yorkers, give no width and chance the pace. When batting there is still room for good cricket shots as Devon Smith showed. I love 20/20 because it is a nice dessert to follow the starter of ODIs and the main course of test cricket.

I dont think anyone sane will forget that our test cricket is a total shambles just because we won a 20/20 game. But it is nice to see us being potentially good at a tournament which there will be an international world cup with ICC status on it.

Yet another victory for the WIPA in a dispute with the WICB.

It is great news that this tour has been cancelled. Our cricket would not benefit anyway putting aside the political issues.

23
I hate to spoil the party but even with this structure our batting will still not score enough runs to compete in test cricket.

i dont think we will do well, these are the best batsmen in the regionals, i think with some experience and the batting coaches and so on listed, we will win test matches and be able to rise to the top again...

God is de BOSS.....

They are the best batsmen in the regionals- yes.
Do they deserve a chance- yes.
Does the infrastructure of West Indies cricket prepare them to be successful in international cricket- no.
Will these players be successful at international level- no unless they are freaks of nature like Lara.

totally agree with you breddah, but these fellahs need the experience and intl matches under their belt, if they get that, they will flourish, i think we need to invest our time in the best in the region who perform, not fellahs who have potential and have been failing time and time again..

God is de BOSS....

I agree in this is what should be done- i would not neccessarily choose the players you have chosen, but i have stopped worrying about team selection and selectors now. I feel it is all a waste of time and effort unless we start at the top and get rid of the administrators of West Indies cricket because whoever we pick and give experience to we are still getting cut ass for the forseeable future because of the stucture and systems in the whole of West Indies cricket.

Purely on defending- who is better, Puyol or Ramos. For example if you needed someone to take Drogba out of the game.

Not really sure how to answer that- not a coach or a tactian......Positionally Puyol might be better as he's more experienced. Ramos is also young and sometimes over zealous in his challenges at times....But consider this- Ramos outshone Cannavaro this season and was easily Madrid's best defender....

Well this Sergio Ramos must be some player if you all are saying he is potentially better than Puyol. In 2006 Puyol was my player of the year. He had everything- he had recovery pace, technically good on the ball, great positionally and very importantly can mix it with the top headers in the game and additionally is a leader. Puyol covers all areas of defending for me. Unfortunately i have not been able to see much of the Spanish league this season but i look forward to watching Sergio Ramos next season because if he is potentially better than Puyol he must be some player!

Surprised you never heard/seen Sergio Ramos- he is young, but he was Spain's starting right back this last World Cup. He plays both stopper & outside full back....He's not as seasoned as Puyol, but definitely has it in him...

Don't just take my word for it though- I'm not a big fan of Puyol....

No i have heard of him and i know he has been getting rave reviews but i havent got round to sitting down and watching 90 minutes of Real Madrid this season so i havent had a chance to see what he can do. If he played in the World Cup i didnt really notice him possibly because i wasnt looking closely at the Spain games.

With Gabrielle Marcotti, who i listen and read a lot of, and yourselves biggin up Sergio Ramos i will make sure i take a closer look next time i watch a Real Madrid or Spain game. (Without having seen much of him) I really cant believe he should be so high up as 13 in the rankings?

26
However I do agree the change in selectors even if we still will get a cut ass.

27

Cricket Anyone / Re: WIPA vs. WICB on Zimbabwe Tour - who is right?
« on: June 27, 2007, 12:41:05 PM »
We all know none of the Test playing nations want to play in Zimbabwe because of the political issues involved. Its as simple as that. Their cricket team is so weak now because of the politics it a disgrace (even more than the WICBs runnings) that the ICC have not done anything about it. Every test playing nation will try to pull out of a tour to Zimbabwe if they can find a way. However a lot of politics is involved, i.e. some countries might need a vote from Zimbabwe so will just play there for that vote.

Since West Indies do not need Zimbabwe's vote any time in the near future given we have hosted the World Cup and do not have a candidate to run for ICC presidency it is common sense that West Indies should pull out of the tour.

However the only 2 ways i think there are to pull out of a tour to Zimbabwe without having to pay compensation is to get a block from the Government, or to have evidence that it is unsafe for players to play in Zimbabwe.

Basically the WICB cannot afford to pull out without having one of the above two reasons (i assume the WICB have not even considered doing this anyway) and in any case do not seem to really care about the players anyway so will be happy to send any squad to Zimbabwe.

However the WIPA have the players best interests and the players obviously do not want to go (who would?) so the WIPA have to find a way to act in the players best interests. It is unlikely that every government in each of the individual countries in the West Indies will come together and agree to block the tour so the WIPA only have one other option. They had to come up with some sort of evidence to say it is not safe for the players to go which i believe they have done. I commend the WIPA for their work.

I understand that the WICB cannot afford to just pull out of the Zimbabwe tour for financial reasons but why are the WICB are trying to sabotage the WIPA plans to get the tour called off. As far as i understand if there are player safety issues then no compensation has to be paid? It appears the WICB are just trying to create more rifts and are trying to embarass the players but everyone can now see through it and the WICB now have nowhere to hide. The WICB has been exposed for what they are not just in this issue but in other issues that have occured this week and previously and no doubt will be in the future.

To answer the question- the WIPA are totally correct to do what they are doing. With regard to the WICB, because i am not 100% sure about the compensation issue i cannot say 100% whether the WICB are right or wrong at this moment but you know what i believe.

remie, i've seen in the news that the player safety concern has been raised - unfortunately i cannot recall who raised the issue (wipa or wicb).

david moore cited this upcoming tour as the one where he wanted to use spinners. funny how that work eh - (steups).
Yep, it was the WIPA who raised the issue on safety because they are trying to get the tour cancelled. The WICB are saying that it is safe for the players because they want the tour to go ahead even it means playing 11 amateurs from the West Indies- because Ganga, Joseph and Ryan Hinds have turned down the captaincy and a lot of other players will not tour.
