T&T girls secure two silver medals in Youth t-tennis
Shammi Kowlessar

BOTH Trinidad and Tobago girls’ teams earned silver medals when the Caribbean Youth Table Tennis Championship served off yesterday in Guyana.

After beating Guyana 3-0 and losing 3-1 to eventual champions Dominican Republic when the straight round-robin event began the day before, the Under-19 girls needed to go down to the wire to edge Jamaica for second place.

With the fixture deadlocked at two, Imani Edwards-Taylor, runner-up in both major senior tournaments contested last year, whipped Kelsey Davidson 12-10, 11-5, 11-1.

The southpaw had earlier given T&T a 2-0 lead by beating Tsenaye Lewis 11-13, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9, after Priyanka Khellawan, who had also flown the red, white and black in the open Caribbean Championships a few days before, cruised past Davidson 11-5, 11-9, 11-3.

Mikah Stroude seemed on her way to completing the sweep, but she failed to close out a 2-0 lead and was eventually nosed out 7-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 13-11 by Liana Campbell.

And then Lewis forced the decider with a convincing 11-9, 11-6, 11-4 triumph over former two-time U-13 champ Khellawan.

Needing to beat Jamaica to edge the Guyanese for the silver in the U-15 straight round-robin event, T&T prevailed 3-1.

Chloe Fraser, the other member of the senior Caribbean team, got the ball rolling with a commanding 11-4, 11-3, 11-3 triumph, and came back to finish the job in similar fashion, 11-8, 11-4, 11-4.

Jordan Thong, who has also been training in France for the last nine months, lost the only point for T&T 11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 11-8 as the Jamaicans made it one-all.

But then Lyllana Boodhan, a winner of seven junior titles this season, got things back on track 15-13, 11-4, 11-6.

The T&T girls had beaten Guyana 3-1, but went down 3-0 to eventual champs the Dominican Republic on Monday.

Both boys’ teams advanced to last night’s semi-finals.

After edging Guyana 3-2 in their opening fixture the day before, the U-15 boys crushed Barbados without losing a single game to win Group 2.

Sekel McIntosh completed the rout 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 after Malik Gopaul had prevailed 11-8, 11-7, 11-2 and Gabriel John had cruised home 11-4, 11-3, 11-4.

After going down 3-0 to Dominican Republic on Monday, the U-19 boys also did not drop a game against Grenada to finish second in Group 1 and earn a place in last night’s semis.

Nicholas Lee won 11-5, 11-5, 12-10; Ameer Mohammed triumphed 11-1, 11-4, 11-5; before Nicholas O’Young got them across the finish line 11-9, 11-6, 11-3.

Bachu, Partap-Boodhan dominate Low Cost Table Tennis

by Shammi Kowlessar

DHARION BACHU and Linda Partap-Boodhan were the leading players in the Low Cost Caroni Zone Table Tennis Association Tournament at the Tunapuna Hindu Primary School, Pasea Main Road, Tunapuna.

As one of the top players in the country, Partap-Boodhan was the overwhelming favourite in her six events and she walked away with gold medals in all.

However the little-known Bachu could have been the player of the tournament as he finished with four golds and three silver medals from his seven events.

In addition to capturing his age-group (Under-11) title, the impressive youngster was crowned Under-13 champion and finished runner-up in the Under-15, 19, and 21 divisions. Bachu then went on to beat Roshan Mahangroo 10-12, 11-5, 14-12, 11-6 for the B class title, and combined with fellow Under-11 champ Anandi Mahangroo and Isreal Ali to secure the team title for Spotlights.

Partap-Boodhan completed her perfect campaign Monday night by winning all four matches in a straight round-robin event for her second straight women’s singles crown.

The country’s former top-ranked player has started five days earlier by retaining her veterans’ (Over-45) title and she was also triumphant in women’s team, open teams as well as the doubles and mixed doubles competitions.

Partap-Boodhan combined with Jessy Sampath and Pretti Singh for gold in the women’s team event and with her daughter Rayanna and Sharaaz Ali to lift the open A class trophy.

The 47-year-old and her other daughter Llyanna whipped Rayanna and Shreya Maraj 11-3, 11-6, 11-6 in the doubles final and she and Ali were 11-9, 11-6, 12-10 winners over Llyanna and Satesh Jordan in the mixed doubles final.

Llyanna was upset in two finals but still ended up with three titles.

The Lakshmi Girls High School student defeated Rayanna to keep her under-21 crown when the tournament served off last Wednesday, but went down when they met in the under-19 final the following night.

And Llyanna beat Maraj in the Under-15 final on Friday night but lost for the first time when they clashed for the under-13 title the same night.

Ali and Jerry Joseph won all three matches in a straight round-robin event for the men’s doubles crown.

After coming within two points of defeat in the fourth game to defeat Joseph 4-11, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10, 11-6 in the semis, Harnarine Moonasar was an 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8 over Ronnie Guevara in the Over-45 final. Frankly Seechan, who dominated eventual champ Aaron Wilson in the first two games of the quarter-finals of the National Championships last month, expectedly captured the Division A crown without dropping a game.

In the final, the 58-year-old prevailed 11-8, 11-5, 13-11 over Tobagonian Messiah Walcott, who had beaten Bachu for the Under-19 title.

Aasif Allie beat Bachu for both the Under-15 and 21 crowns, while under-nine competitors Aria Manjoor and Trent Sampath were the youngest champs of the six-day tournament.

STRAKER NETS OUTSCORE SPARTANS TO GO 3-1 FOR THE SEASON
by ian wason

Straker Nets continued their surge towards the Christmas break with a 98-59 win over Spartans in the BBL at the St Paul Street multi-purpose facility on Monday.

The Nets flew off to an early 32-13 first-quarter lead, after Naython Lewis scored 11 points in that period with 3 threes. Sadiki Guerra also hit 2 threes in the first quarter for 10 first-quarter points.

Spartans enjoyed better second and third quarters as they came into their stride, winning the second quarter 17-16 and winning the third quarter 22-21. But they still trailed 67-52 at the start of the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was all Straker Nets as they restricted Spartans to just 7 points, as the North Zone runners-up racked up 31 points in the final period, to win 98-59 to go 3-1 in the BBL.

The prolific Sadiki Guerra scored 26 points to lead all scorers, while Naython Lewis added 16 and Richard Guissepi contributed 15.

For Spartans (1-2), leader Shornelle Pompey scored 17 and Jahiem Furlonge added 16.

Coach Benny wants Belmont FC to become pro unit
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Newsday)

BELMONT FC won their first Northern Football Association (NFA) League Cup title at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field in Mucurapo on Wednesday night.

An early second-half strike from Kendal Hackett was enough to give Belmont FC a 1-0 win over Guerreros FC. Belmont FC became the second team from Belmont to win the title following in the footsteps of St Francois Nationals who won previously.

Former St Anthony’s College players Che Benny and Haile Beckles are among those on the Belmont FC squad. A total of 18 teams competed in the tournament over the past six weeks.

Belmont FC coach Mark Benny was pleased with the effort of his players but thinks the standard of play could have been of a higher standard.

"Performance wise I think we could have been better. We have always been one of the fitter teams in the league."

Belmont FC have been in existence for six years and is a community-based team as 75 per cent of the players are from Belmont including goalscorer Hackett.

"Most of the players though are homegrown to our credit. It is more a Belmont-based team. We have a few people from outside, but they are friends of the players."

Benny has goals for the club and does not want to see the club stay in the NFA. "We want to bring a professional unit out of Belmont. From day one that has been the dream."

Belmont FC trains at Queen's Park Savannah which is within walking distance from the community.

With support from sponsors, the club can reach further. Asked where he sees the club in two years, Benny said, "We know how the football goes. It is all dependent on sponsorship. Right now everything usually is on my pocket. We try to do fundraisers in between. We are hoping to do something where we could get the community involved."

Benny was thankful that fans made the trip from Belmont to the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field for the match. "We had a good turnout last night and we had a lot of Belmont supporters. We trying to keep that (because) you play for community and family first. We have a set of players who represent Belmont to the best of their ability and we just want to carry that forward."

Discussing what may have contributed to the success of the team, Benny pointed to the defence. "Defensively we pride ourselves on our rugged and sturdy defending. Even though we never won the league (previously) we always come out probably conceding the least amount of goals. We are a very solid unit and we play for each other."

as inaccessibility to it is creating a gaping hole in the development of basketball in the north zone and the Caribbean,” Mitchell said.

I don't know about the Caribbean. I do know it is a gaping hole in TT netball and basketball. I would really like to see how they will redesign this facility. I do hope the main court has removable playing surface for basketball and netball. But certainly welcoming news.

The Jean Pierre complex as a sporting venue had problems from the very beginning with it’s design. If memory serves me right I believe it was designed by Emile Elias. Where the gym is was an after taught of what to
do with that space after the outer courts were designed. Sports like table tennis and badminton could not use the gym because of the air coming in from the top. The eventually took care to some extent of that but from day 1 it was as a badly designed sporting facility.

Basketball fraternity welcomes rebuilding of Jean Pierre Complex
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH

THE LOCAL basketball fraternity welcomes the reconstruction of the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.

The longstanding multi-sport facility, opened in 1979 for the staging of the Netball World Cup, is earmarked for demolition and rebuilding by the Ministry of Sport and Community Development owing to its outdated and irreparable state.

The venue is the official home of netball but also a major host for sports including basketball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis.

Since the pandemic hit in March 2020, the facility was closed and did not reopen when covid19 restrictions were lifted earlier this year because of its derelict condition.

Sport Minister Shamfa Cudjoe confirmed last Wednesday that it needs and will get a total overhaul.

Claire Mitchell, National Basketball Federation (NBFTT) president, welcomes the reconstruction.

“The Jean Pierre Complex, since its creation, has been the most coveted and easily accessible place for basketball and other sport to be played.

“I support the demolition and rebuilding of it as soon as possible, as inaccessibility to it is creating a gaping hole in the development of basketball in the north zone and the Caribbean,” Mitchell said.

She hopes the complex is replaced with amenities to host national, regional or international tournaments or even a basketball World Cup. This comes on the heels of TT’s inaugural participation at the FIBA 3x3 Under-18 World Cup in Hungary last week.

To host such high-calibre events, Mitchell said, “This would require at least a world-class tournament court, warm-up courts/areas, seating accommodation, parking, bathroom facilities and dormitories for local preparation camps. The new complex should also act as a national team training centre.”

The Jean Pierre Complex has an indoor court with seating and two outdoor courts with stadium seating. It stands in the same compound as the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

The stadium is also in visible disrepair and in need of refurbishment.

A decision on whether major restoration work or possible total reconstruction would be done on the stadium remains uncertain until further assessments are done.

Works on the two facilities however, will only start after TT hosts the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in August 2023.

In the interim, only facilities being used as official CYG venues, such as the Dwight Yorke Stadium (Tobago) and Couva’s Ato Boldon Stadium, the National Cycling Velodrome and National Aquatics Centre will get the lion’s share of restoration.

So work on the complex will begin in late 2023 or early 2024.

Mitchell added the lengthy wait for the venue may be a challenge, but believes the end result augurs well for basketball development.

“Basketball will surely suffer in the interim. However, in pursuit of excellence, these are some of the pitfalls that occur. The hope and increased opportunities for the development of the sport that rebuilding brings will be worth it in the end.”

Currently, netball and basketball, among other sports, have been using other indoor arenas to host events, practise and prepare for tournaments.

For indoor training, they use the Southern Regional facility in Pleasantville, Maloney Indoor Complex and Woodbrook Youth Facility, and for outdoor use, Nelson Mandela Park in St Clair and Maloney Outdoor courts.

“The reality is that we cannot use the complex as a venue resource in its present condition. Basketball and others are already exploring alternatives such as training and playing outdoors.

“We struggle around the weather, the effect of certain surfaces on our joints, inadequate changing rooms, competition with community residents and other disenfranchised sporting disciplines for space etcetera.

“We have to do something positive with the convenient space that the Jean Pierre Complex occupies and move forward with purpose,” Mitchell said.

BIG BASKETBALL LEAGUE TO JUMP OFF IN NOVEMBER
by ianwason

The inaugural Big Basket Basketball League is set to jump off in November with 10 of this country’s biggest basketball teams. With sports recently reopening, after its closure due to the covid-19 pandemic, basketball is set to be in for a time.

As the name suggests, the Big Basketball League will be the biggest privately run league, sanctioned by the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago.

The League will see 10 teams divided into 2 conferences, with each of the 10 teams playing each other once. The top 2 teams in each of the conferences will square off for the conference’s best of 5 finals. The conference winners will then play in the best of 7 finals.

Some of the features of the League include 12 minutes duration of the quarters instead of 10 minutes and the All-Star Weekend at the end of the regular season where the fans will determine who plays in the All-Star Game. There will also be a reward for the team with the noisiest and best supporters.

Families will be encouraged to come out in their numbers on Christmas day and on New Years’ day as some mouth-watering fixtures will await basketball lovers. Fans and supporters can keep up with the tournament on wavetvtt.com to check fixtures, results, and stories, as well as vote for the All-Star starters and the MVP.

All 45 regular season games will be streamed live in addition to the playoffs. Fixtures will be released as soon as all the teams confirm participation.

The League is expected to begin on the first Friday in November with games on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until the playoffs.

Daniel Phillips made his first start in midfield for St Johnstone, and looked pretty good. He won six of his 10 duels and showed good strength, as well as some nice touches on the ball.
He was taken off a bit earlier than might have been expected because of an early booking, but showed some promising signs.

wasn't his brother called up more than him?

Yes, Dre has 10 senior caps and Ajani has two. Dre also featured for the T&T U-17 and U-20.

Thanks Tallman.

Atlanta United signs Ajani Fortune as Homegrown player
Atlanta United Communications

Atlanta United announced today it has signed Atlanta United 2 midfielder Ajani Fortune to a Homegrown contract through the 2024 season with multiple additional option years, effective Jan. 1, 2023. Fortune, who made his debut with the Trinidad and Tobago national team in 2021, joined the Atlanta United Academy in 2018 and has played 48 matches with ATL UTD 2.“We’re excited to sign Ajani as a Homegrown Player after following his development with our Academy and ATL UTD 2,” Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said. “Ajani’s progression to the First Team is a credit to him and the excellent work being done by Matt Lawrey and our developmental pathway. He’s a talented midfielder who reads the game very well and has a great work rate. We look forward to him taking the next step of his career.”

Fortune, 19, has become a staple of Jack Collison’s ATL UTD 2 setup in midfield since signing from the Atlanta United Academy in August 2021. The Raleigh, North Carolina native has made 14 appearances, 10 of them starts, logging 971 minutes in the 2022 USL Championship campaign, including captaining the side in its last match against San Antonio FC on July 16. In his three seasons in the USL Championship, Fortune has made 48 appearances, 31 starts and has scored three goals.“I’m really pleased for Ajani because I’ve seen first-hand how hard he’s worked for this opportunity,” Atlanta United 2 head coach Jack Collison said. “He brings such energy to his role in the midfield and he’s always taken the chances he’s been given to take the next step in his development, going back to his days in the Academy. He’s earned that next step and I’m ecstatic that it’s here with the club.”

Joining the Academy before the 2018-19 season, Fortune worked his way through the ranks in the U-17 and U-19 squads before making his professional debut with ATL UTD 2 against Charleston Battery on July 11, 2020.“We are so proud of Ajani and his accomplishments here at Atlanta United,” Atlanta United Academy director Matt Lawrey said. “He exemplifies the humble work rate we always talk about here in the Academy. His technique, calmness on the ball, and ability to solve any situation with his talents and his brain, define him as a player. But his humility, willingness to work hard for his coaches and teammates, and love of the game define him as a person. We are so excited for him to take his next step in his career.”

The midfielder earned his first international call-up for the Trinidad and Tobago national football team on Jan. 31, 2021, making his debut against the United States in a friendly the next day; he has made two career appearances for his country.

Atlanta United (6-8-6, 24 points) travels to Los Angeles to face LA Galaxy on Sunday, July 24 (9:30 p.m. EST, FS1/FOX Deportes, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).

TRANSACTION: Atlanta United signs Ajani Fortune as a Homegrown Player on July 21, 2022, effective Jan. 1, 2023.
