Actually that was a huge controversy earlier this year. They voted on whether or not to put a canopy over part of the stadium's seats, but the measure was soundly defeated because of the recent retractable-roof baseball stadium debacle in Miami (by some estimates, the baseball team's owner more or less got over $1 bil of taxpayer $-for free. He then proceeded to sell off all his players and laugh his way to the bank).

As far as Costa Rica's performance is concerned, if they don't beat Canada by at least 3 goals in their last game to move on to the next round, their coach is not coaching another u17 team. Stick a fork in him he is done. They were piss poor. With that being said, Cooper must have told them to see the shot and be the shot. The first goal was soft. The keeper was snoozing and when you snooze you loose. The second goal by Sam was a gem, a little higher exactly where it was placed and not a goalkeeper in the world was going to save that rock. I will save my indictment of this performance for later. Congratulations on the win, yeah, but now you are left depending on another team to determine your destiny.I'll call a spade a spade: the first goal, took a slight deflection. I don't think it was only a result of the keeper being asleep.
I agree with Deese- I'm not taking anything away from our boys' effort, but it was obvious that CR side is not too good of a team at all, especially by Costa Rican standards.
Also, just an observation: T&T had a definite physical and athletic advantage and used it for all it was worth. The difference in size and athleticism between the squads made us look like one of those African "U-17" sides.
Hopefully T&T will have a chance to remove all doubts against a better team in the quarterfinals.

IMO Latapy might still be manager today given 3 major resources: more control over his selections, time, and quality friendly matches. I don't know how much you can expect from any national team manager who doesn't have access to those things. Given all that and the terrible state of our national football federation when he was managing, I don't think he did too bad.

In regards to Birchall getting called up: I'm no blind devotee of any player, I'm only blindly devoted to T&T football, even despite what I've (and everyone else here) had to go through as a fan. That being said, I have no doubt the coaches/management are not as dotish as people make them out to be, and that Birchie's selection is definitely warranted. I'll retract this statement when we have other midfielders under the age of 30 who have no problem finding a side to play for in MLS or Europe.

There's no draw- they place the teams in groups based upon parity and potential crowd draw. In the last tournament, they announced the groups in early March, though.

I know you're just trying to be realistic, but there is no need to doubt that this side will play a great brand of football and make all the Caribbean proud. This group of young men is arguably one of the most successful Caribbean teams in history. They have held their own in FIFA competition against big youth sides like like Italy, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, and the core of this same Mexico team (the last three games I mentioned were all draws at the most recent Pan Am games with a relatively unprepared T&T side, due to circumstances). This may be one hell of a Mexico side, but I have absolute confidence that our team will pull out a result.

I guess with this kind of info fields like that will not be suited for T&T,it will not even be cost effective.I must say though it's the best surface for Indoor Soccer,the Indoor facilities that have them do good business because you can play any day/time without any obstruction,they lasts years because you don't have to worry about the concerns you posted.

Coops: I must mention that the pitches that I spoke about were in Miami, Texas, and Atlanta; three very hot places. In T&T, there's more consistent cloud cover and more days with rain than any of these places, so the "heat sink" issue may not be as great of a problem (as a side note: the overheating issue occurs because the black rubber pellets on the field absorb and retain heat extremely well). Perhaps someone should do a study on the Marvin Lee Stadium to see how it fares during the day prior to moving on with building other plastic pitches in T&T.

« on: December 02, 2011, 02:56:44 PM »The surface has improved considerably. I've played on some where I could goalkeep in short sleeves, because it was so padded. The blades were like real grass, and it was real cushiony. Then, you have the cheap surfaces that are being laid down by NYC Parks & Rec that is just not up to standard. You get what you pay for. It's much better than the commercial carpet that was passed off as turf field in the 80s and 90s.
True, fieldturf (the artificial turf mentioned here) today is much better than the astroturf of yesteryear. The problem is that it's not truly maintenance-free, as this article seems to purport. If fieldturf is not properly maintained (i.e. properly patched, etc.) and then replaced at the end of its useable lifespan, and if the rubber pellets that they spray over the turf aren't occasionally replenished, then those fields are just as hard and unsafe as the old astroturf. There was a specific artificial pitch here in Miami that wasn't properly maintained; I ended up breaking my arm there as a result.
There are three disadvantages to this kind of artificial pitches that haven't been mentioned yet-
A. Those tiny recycled rubber pellets that are used to pad the turf get stuck in your shoes and can make running extremely uncomfortable.
B. When I broke my arm on the turf field, my surgeon told me that fractures are 40% more likely to happen on turf fields than grass; even the "new" turf described here. Just something to consider.
C. Fieldturf gets VERY hot in the summer, especially if directly exposed to sunlight. An official university study said that turf can get hotter than 170 degrees Fahrenheit (77 C)
when exposed to sunlight, which is way over the maximum recommended playing field temperature of 120 Fahrenheit (48 C) for athletes. If I had young children, I would definitely have second thoughts about sending them to train or play on a field that hot; you might as well send your kids to play in a sauna. Here's the funny part... There were fieldturf fields where I used to train, and they would spray water on the fields every 20-30 minutes to keep them from overheating during the summer. It just seemed ironic that they would go through the trouble of installing artificial turf only to be watering it more than grass.
