I'm kinda hoping they go with this midfield trio Song, Frimpong and Rosicky in the hole Theo, RVP , Gervinho up top!!

Thinking they will go with Ramsey ahead of Frimpong.

Arsenal scored more goals that all the teams above them with the exception of ManU. However, they gave up more goals that evey team above them. I am not sure if its just the back four, because Arsenal's midfield defending is IMHO very weak and fails to protect its back line, sepecially with both full backs bombing forward. When they were having success the midfield general Viera was not only a ball winner, but a superb passer and organizer. Not to mention they had the likes of Petite and Edu. Yes they need a quality central defender, but for me the most pressing is a stable, athletic defensive midfielder.

I agree with you. But I would go a step further and say it's not just the defensive midfielder, but the defensive efforts of the entire midfield in general.

As much as i'd like to believe in the man, Wenger doesn't make sense sometimes. He keeps saying that he will only sign players of super quality that can add something to Arsenal. How does this square with his signing of Silvestre, Squillaci and Sol? He has said that we need a CB since January and nada so far. Man needs a calpet to get moving!

He says that will only spend big on players of "super quality". Silvestre, Squillaci and Sol were brought in as cover not as main signings.

Statements like this makes no sense to me. It will always be better to try than to not try at all. And to besides trying  to reach Brazil will only help the team be better prepared for 2018. What will he rather us do ??? sit down and do nothing for four more years ??? yeah this will really help us for 2018  ::)

My thoughts exactly. Why do you have to give up on 2014, to put things in place for 2018 and beyond? Makes no sense.

But I will disagree with you about Adam...Adam is a big player and had he a better supporting cast he would have done even more. He will do well at Liverpool. Good set piece taker and good passing range and puts in a good blade when needed. I find it is hard to get a player like that for less than 10 mil...he and Nzogbia are bargains.

I think Charlie Adam is good at set pieces. Otherwise he's not that good. I don't think he will shine at Liverpool. I think he actually better off being a big fish in a small pond. We will see though.

Theoretically we have brought in Myachi.. misspelt sorry, Gervinho, Vermalean, Frimpong, Traore ... 5 new players ... but I think we need just one more defender ..... a solid one offensively we always miss walcott ... more than any other attacker barring RVP.
I watched this Mata guy today and wasn't completely impressed to be honest if we were to get the one defender and Mata and sell Nasri and keep Cesc for one more season I think that would be good business.
This may sound crazy but I've made two observations ..... one I really like Rosicky in that role that Cesc plays in themiddle this season I've seen no one play it as well... and two to win this league you dont only need silled players but mentally tough ones as well which leads me t believe that at some point both Frimpong and Song have to be starting at the same time in the midfield with maybe Wilshire playing that attacking role!!!

Miyachi and Traore still have a lot to prove. Frimpong and Gervinho even. Out of those 5 players I would say we have one we know we can rely on, two who have impressed in (meaningless) preseason games and look capable, and two young players who are hit or miss. With Traore, all signs point to miss. With Miyaichi, I think he just needs more time to develop. But more transfers will arrive. I think at least two. But they will happen when sales are made. Once the Bendtner, Almunia, Eboue deals are sorted, then I think we can look forward to more signings. Just my guess, 3 weeks to go before the close of the transfer window.

Oh, I can't wait to see Walcott on one flank and Gervinho on the other. Their pace is going to destroy teams.

I am very impressed by Frimpong, and I think of all the young players he is the only one who looks like he can make the step up into the first team. Jenkinson isn't too bad either but he's been less convincing. Expected more from Miyaichi after all the reviews but from what I've seen he looks more like a player that should be sent out on loan, than one who is pushing for the first team.

When you study that this was an Arsenal team without Nasri, Fabregas, Wilshere, Walcott and Koscielny ... things are not that bad. The second half was the Carling Cup team playing against seasoned internationals. That said, if Vermaelen or Gibbs gets injured, Arsenal are in trouble. I'm not even convinced that Gibbs is ready to be the starting LB yet, but I'm convinced that Traore is shaky. And without Vermaelen, we are exactly where we were last season. Depth in those two positions are lacking.

I do expect Wenger to bring in a defender before the window closes though.

[EDIT] Regarding the second goal, Squillaci eat a beat. Every defender is get leave out now and then. How come no one blaming Fabianski for getting beaten on his near post from a shot outside the area? Squillaci is usually the goat but today I will defend the guy. He had a decent 45 minutes.

This doesn't change the fact that I would still like to see him replaced. Lol.

that ever happened to our football, going to the world cup?

i kinda want tuh think so, bc since we went to that tournament nothing eh go right with T&T football. not one player landed a good contract after the WC, the best players got black listed, beenhakker bounced, infighting between the federation and the ministry of sports caused ah whole lot of anxiety to the hard core fans with threats of suspending the football.

we eh win the regional tourney in the last 5 yrs, as ah matter of fact jack took ah holiday from caring for the senior team to advance his political career. he brought in two clueless coaches to save money for his political campaign, as ah result we missed out on the gold cup twice in succession, and private investors lose faith in the federation and stop backin the football, jack warner just had ah field day with the fans and the the football showing us who is boss.

now i don't know bout allyuh, but i would gladly give up the last WC experience just to see our football build and head in the right direction instead the negative experiences over this past five yrs of total neglect that our football has suffered all @ the expense of going to a world cup.

i'd much rather be in jamaica's position, they missed out on the hex bc their football was weakened, but they took time and build slowly, now they are a force to reckon with, they won two regional tourneys back to back and reached the quarter final of the gold cup, beating some big teams in the process.

now every body want tuh play them, and they have money in their coffers to subsidize their travel expenses, i even saw on fifa .com that they have a game with china on the 10th. tuh tell yuh the truth, and ah hate to admit it, but i'm truly jealous of them, ah hope they show camps and his imps how tuh run ah federation

IMO jack warner orchestrated this whole WC journey so he could raise money for his own personal use. this WC was about jack's coffers and never for the advancement of T&T football , BC since then the man eh do nothing right by the mens senior team, which lead me to believe that this WC was ah curse rather than ah blessing.

i truly hope that fifa finds camps guilty of accepting bribes, him and his subordinates and ban them for life, just remove the whole org and set up new elections. (ah guess ah just grasping @ straws here) it's never bad tuh dream though.

Correlation. Not causation. Making the world cup isn't the reason things fell apart.

My thing about the centre backs is we need 3 attributes. 1) Aerial ability, since Arsenal's weakness last season was defending high balls into the box, other than that they conceded the least goals from open play of any team in the league. 2) The mentality to just blast the ball into "Row Z" because all those jokey half clearances killing us. 3) Not necessarily a starting defender but someone to push Squillaci down the depth chart, because TV and LK have the ability, as does Djourou when he in form.

This is what killing Djourou in my opinion. Tries to be too neat in the back when he can just clear. He often talks about liking playing midfield and maybe you see it in the way he plays the ball out of the back.

Don't you think that is how they practise it on the Arsenal training ground? Play 'cultured' football instead what Arsene9 would consider 'loutish' kicking the ball away! I think the problem with some footballers today not just some Arsenal players is they don't take in consideration 'time, place and score'; which has led to poor decision making on the field.

Djourou need to be more loutish then. A lot of the mistakes he makes are due to trying to be too composed under pressure. He needs to watch some videos of Vidic.

Funny that you use Vidic as an example, because sometimes I feel he boots the ball out of play when he had a play to pass it. But I guess he does that because he understands his limitations  which supports your point about Djourou.

Clearing the ball too often vs dallying on the ball too often. As a defender you're probably better off doing the former.

It's not an attack/defense thing, but I will agree that the attack has a lot to do with it. Oftentimes last season, I have commented during games that Arsenal needs to stop playing with their food. They are usually in complete control of a game on the field, but not on the scoreboard, and (much like this weekend with NY) they piss away chances until the opposition scores (usually a lucky goal or a set piece). I think this is why Wenger looks at attacking players more. He knows it's not enough to dominate, everybody can get scored on, but you need to be able to make your dominance count. I don't count preseason games much, after all, Van Persie spent most of his time trying to nutmeg a defender. Not exactly a focused effort.

One of the things this team does, that the invincibles era did not, is slow down their game. When Arsenal went down a goal in the Highbury days, they didn't change the attacking philosophy, it didn't become more direct, they just did it faster and faster so that the opponent was run ragged and then the killer blow was applied. This team likes to get into a lead and then coast. It's the coasting that's killing them, not the offence or defense.

Just my 2 cents.
Very well said. The truth is if we put away half the chances we have and stop coasting we would be much better. They were clinical in 2 games for me last season and they had alternate results because of their mentality.

Newcastle they were clinical and got to 4-0 then their arrogance made them stop playing and they were punished for it. Chelsea they were up 3-0 but because they respected that Chelsea could still come back they kept vigilant to the end.

The big problem with this team is they need to be more "efficient" offensively and more mentally stable.

Fabregas makes the team a lot more efficient. They missed him last season. I also think Arshavin in the position behind the striker could make the team a bit more efficient. These guys know when to be direct and are a bit more decisive in their passing/attacking play. Just my opinion.

I know how it is with eh being brave enough to kick ball..took me a solid ten mths and that was with rehab 5 times a week

A year? Ten months? Thank goodness I didn't have ACL damage. I would a die being unable to kick a ball for so long. I so tusty I would a probably be kicking a ball in half the time and end back up on a operator table. Lol

You feel he have we to study? The man say he looking for a defensive signing and the transfer window still have a month to run. Arsenal really only need a centre back with good aerial and clearing ability. Honestly I more worried about no left winger. And of course if Frimpong can back up Alex Song.

You have so much faith in Frimpong? I worried about that position too.

Frico,

I had the same type of injury in 2003.  I continued playing on it for 7 years, and finally I had an operation done in November of last year.  The good news is that there is a new procedure for this type of injury, and you would be out of the operating room the same day and able to walk normal after 3 days.  It is called "knee arthroscopy".  The doctor makes two small incisions on either side of your knee (the size of a half ah channa)and runs a telescope through one side and repairs the tear from the other side.  Really really cool procedure.. these are the pictures of my meniscus from the operation.  One shows the good knee and the other shows the tear on the bad knee

arthroscopy aint new at all unless u consider a surgery that is general practice from the 90s new. It does however bring down the amount of time for recovery. But again, all depends on how bad the tear is. All my knee meniscus surgeries were done arthroscopically but all had different recovery times due to the type of tears. Just don't want you to think just because it is done arthroscopically that you are guaranteed to be able to walk normal after three days, we have had the problem here at the hospital i am at with patients expecting recovery times to be the same as their friend's. Then they are very disappointed if it is a tear like my first one that required the meniscus to be stitched together and take longer
If yuh brave yuh cud ask for local anesthetic and u can watch ur own surgery. Although most doctors don't tell you about that option until u say u have a fear of going under general.

yea, it's not new. had a meniscus tear and did "anthro...yadayada" in 2006. woke up in the middle of the surgery all kind a thing. was able to walk out the hospital with a cane and got the cast off in about 2 weeks. the toughest part is the physiotherapy to restrengthen. in the little bit of time that my leg was in the cast some serious muscle entropy took place.

What league is Santa Rosa FC in? I find it strange that they own his contract.
The club is owned by Keith Lok Loy. They own some players and loan then out untill they can get into the Pro League. Not a bad business plan, either they get in and have players or they get money by selling the players and get money to develop the club more.

That's what I figured. I just hope they don't price this guy out of a move.

To me it's bad practice to sell a starting player before getting a replacement. Now it could be that they do have the replacement lined up, but if it turns out that they are now shopping for a left back, then they taking huge risks with this team.

I think Wenger has the confidence in Gibbs to replace Clichy which is why he didn't line up a replacement. Otherwise, I think replacements are being lined up before players go. Which looks like the case with Gervinho and Bendtner.

What's funny is that everyone was calling Clichy a liability not too long ago and saying that he should be shown the door. Then when he goes to an opponent, a lot people are saying that we shouldn't be strengthening our competition. I just hope it's not the same people, and that the fans not that fickle.

Football / Re: Stern Interview
« on: July 07, 2011, 04:53:31 PM »
this is not really about Stern ...this is about an approach which has failed to stimulate interest in T&T football ... look how dey flocking to see young Brazil eh ? ...you tink it eh have better old stagers dan some ah dem who starting ? but de coach thinking bout de WC to be played in Brazil . You tink Fabiano  and  Kaka kyah make dat team ? you really tink so ? but dey watching though ....

I agree with you to an extent. The difference is that when you talking about Brazil, the youth that coming through their ranks and getting national team call ups are the ones who have the ability. So when you throw them in the national team is to give them experience.

So its the same with Trinidad. Bring through the youth that have ability. Unfortunately it seems that coaches (except maybe Maturana) coming here and not seeing enough in the young players to integrate them. Sad to say. Maybe as you mentioned earlier they give up because they aren't given the chance when they expect it. The ones who do that need to be a more persistent and patient.

Fabiano and Kaka might make the Brazilian national team under a different coach. Maybe the can't anymore, I don't follow those players. But even if they could, they are not being replaced by youngsters who are a step down from them in their level of play, and they aren't being replaced by players who aren't good enough to get the results the team needs. And that's the two things any coach going to be thinking about when he has to make the decision between a Stern John and young local player.

As you say, this is not about Stern himself. And I'll make it clear that I am not a fan of Stern John. But at the same time, if Stern gets back to a decent level of fitness, I will be hesitant to put player like Jorsling ahead of him in an important national team game. Because from what I've seen, A league is rubbish compared to International football, and scoring goals Orlando Pirates/against Caribbean opposition doesn't necessarily translate into performing against the US, Costa Rica etc. On the other hand, I might be more likely to put a Darryl Roberts in ahead of Stern cause he's played in the Dutch League against better opposition and did well.

Basically my point is, a principle is a principle. But the fact-specifics matter. Or to put it another way, I'm all for giving young players a chance, but not just for giving them a chance sake. Development is important, but results are as well. And its possible to balance both with a mix of experience and youth. That's the coach's call.

Is it that you see young players who are good enough that considering Stern's inclusion shouldn't even be an option? Maybe we agree in principle and that is the real difference between your opinion and those you are open to including Stern. Sad to say, I'm not that confident in a lot of the young players in our national team setup. And maybe that's with good reason.

ps. The other thing is I don't think that developing players is the responsibility of a national team/coach.

The examples you gave are of active players who never stopped playing or were always on the team. not the same is it ? Stern worked his way off the team ..remember ?? and not for the first time .. so your examples should be of players in similar circumstance. this is more like resurrection  rather than  continuation ....and that is  my point ?

we are rebuilding here, or supposed to be , ...is Stern a part of that ? is it for his leadership skills that he is maintained ? why not use the younger kenwyn Jones for that ...and try to focus on the future with young aspiring talent ?

No I cant support a call for Rocky , Star that he was , but like Kwai chang Cane used to say ..." grasshopper it is time for you to leave the kung Fu  temple "  :beermug:

Lol. I hear you. But Stern hasn't played himself off the team until someone else plays them self onto it. It's not like other players haven't gotten a look. Things rough with our talent pool.

at this rate we might as well bring back Latapy yes ! where we going wid Stern ?? back to the future ??

If he trains hard and is better than the younger players, why not pick him?

Yuh think Liverpool will have a big game and play Hendedrson instead of Gerrard because they looking to the future?  Or Chelsea with Sturidge and McEchrean instead of Drogba and Lampard??

If he not performing, then drop him.........but if he is doing well in training, then the man should play, talk done!!

ah loveit!!

...and he might be better than the young players at this time but  when he finally retires he may have retired more young players who gave up serious training because of lack of opportunity. It was the same when he was a young player trying to get a break ...many of us had to make noise for him because he was from El and east ...this is a cycle breds ...lets not continue to moonwalk in our approach to achieving success ....too often we seem to be going forward while sliding backwards ....just so you dont miss the pun ... :beermug:

Disagree with this big time. If you give up because you didn't get the opportunity you missing the point of what it means to be a professional and what competition is all about.

I agree with you ..but you know what ..many of them do ! Have you never had to talk to a young person who was ready to give up ? I have had many ...all it takes is a little encouragement for them to give of their best. The converse is sadly also true ...all it takes is a little discouragement for them to give up .

Not every athlete is a brian lara who could keep on making centuries while not being selected to the west Indies team .
Let me go back to the original argument ..Stern is neither the present nor the future of Trinidad football but will always be a great contributor to past teams . I therefore do not see his selection to the present national team scenario as a positive move ...

I don't think people are saying he is the present or future, but rather if he shows in training that he is better than the young players they're open to idea of making him the present.

When I think about this argument, it reminds me of Arsenal. You can give young players a chance and let them get more experience from an early age, hoping that they develop into top players. Some will turn out like Fabregas and shine, some will turn out like Senderos and flop. But in order to give them the chance, sometimes Arsenal had to let the Vieira's and Henry's move on. Even though they might still have had something to contribute to the team. In the end they've developed some good talent, but at the same time they haven't won anything in a long time.

So to use it as an analogy for Trinidad, we want to give young players experience but we need to balance that with our desire to win games and qualify for the World Cup. And from what we see, our depth of talent is not sufficient enough that we feel it's worth letting a player like Stern go IF he has something to contribute to the team. I don't think the argument here is as much about Stern as it is about the principle of the thing.

And you used Dwight Yorke and Hutchinson as examples, but look at Alex Ferguson and a player like Van der Sar. With the amount of young talent in Man Utd squad its arguably more reasonable for Ferguson to let younger players takeover the reigns. But he still keeps the Scholes, Giggs etc around the team and plays them in the big games because sometimes that experience is what you need to win on the day. Just as Sterns experience MIGHT be what we need to get past a Guatemala or something in a crucial qualifier.

Point is, if he shows that he can contribute he might be useful. It doesn't mean we don't give young players opportunities. That's what friendlies and squad rotation is about. But if you have a young player who gives up because Stern is around he feels like he hasn't been given a chance, then he probably doesn't have the mental strength to succeed as a footballer.

Goalkeeping dept .. we have two talented kids who have come of agelast eason all three got injured .. again not a norm so realistically I think we're good in that dept.
We cant go changing up everything believe it or not we have talent on this team to do some real damage

I would say one talented kid. Fabianski is horrible.

Allyuh have to understand what American coaches look for first is size, speed and strength. Javed is a defender if I recall correctly so he will be easily bypassed.

Food for thought, if Messi had tried out for the MLS he never would have made it.

Speed and strength, yes. Size, not necessarily. Though it does help. And that's not just MLS, that's ALL top level football.

Messi has the first two. And incredible skill. So yes, he would have made it to the MLS. To think that he would not is absurd. Food for thought, is Keon Daniel big, strong and speedy?
