This is for the Laker fans primarily as I can't imagine a laker hater having a favorite laker pt guard, but if you do/did pls comment.  Most would say Magic I imagine, for me it was as well, but immediately after Magic it was Van Exel, loved this youth game, imagine LA suffered w/talent like Van Exel, Eddie Jones, Elden Campbell and others, well we know why.  Fisher has the rings to prove it, but he comes in after Nick for me and not b/c we share the same 1st name  ;D

The Soca Warriors will look to break a three-match winless streak at home to Honduras when both teams face off on match day two of the 2010 South Africa World Cup Concacaf Final Round qualifier tonight from 7 pm at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. However, at Mucurapo, history will not be on the side of the hosts who have failed to muster a win in three home matches against the Central Americans, the last of which was a World Cup qualifier in 2002 which ended in a 4-2 defeat at Mucurapo. In the other two matches, T&T battled to 0-0 also in a World Cup qualifier back in 1990 at the Queen’s Park Oval, and a 1-1 draw in 1971.

Overall, T&T has only managed to beat the Hondurans twice, the last of which came via a Stern John strike in a 1-0 win away to end the host hopes of 2002 World Cup qualification while the last time both teams met Honduras won 3-1 in Honduras in a 2007 friendly. A win for T&T tonight will go a long way in helping on the road to South Africa, but the job will not be an easy one as the Soca Warriors go into match without suspended trio of captain, Dwight Yorke, Christopher Birchall and goalkeeper Clayton Ince.

Yorke was banned by Fifa for four matches for allegedly abusing Mexican referee Marc Rodriguez after the El Salvador match, but the ban has since been reduced to two matches while Birchall and Ince picked up yellows cards and will miss the match through suspension also. With the void left by Yorke and Birchall in the middle, coach Maturana will have to decide from Anthony Wolfe, Densill Theobald, Clyde Leon, Trent Noel, Russell Latapy and Khaleem Hyland to fill gap while goalkeepers Marvin Phillip and Jan-Michael Williams are in line to take Ince’s spot in goal.

The back four is expected to comprise Andrei Pacheco, Dennis Lawrence, Keyeno Thomas and a surprise role for Anthony Wolfe at right back. Yesterday, the T&T squad had its final training session at the match venue. Captain and coach Francisco Maturana revealed that the session was satisfactory. “To me the session was maybe one of the better ones for us and I am pleased with the way things looked. Now the important part is execution because what happens in the 90 minutes against Honduras matters most to all of us,” Maturana said. “Everyone must believe that we can get everything possible from this game.

At home you are under pressure to get all the points, but I think we need to use it to our advantage. We must play the game using everything to that we have in our hands and I think if we can minimise our mistakes and capitalise on our chances then we can be happy at the end of the night.” T&T and Sunderland FC striker Kenwyne Jones added “We’re at home and we want to get three points. I think Honduras are very similar to the teams we have played in the past. We just need to focus on the way we play and the things that we need to get what we want from this game,” Jones said.

“What would make us happy would be six points but moreso we’re not going to lose any matches,” Jones concluded. Honduras, who warmed up for the T&T match with a 2-0 win over American First Division club, Montreal Impact on Sunday will be without striker David Suazo, on loan to Portuguese club, Benfica from Italy’s Inter Milan, due to a serious knee injury.

With Suazo out injured Honduras’ Colombian coach Reynaldo Rueda will hope that in-form Italian Serie B striker Julio “Rambo” Cesar of Parma, midfielder and captain Amado Guevara, Necaxa striker Carlos Pavon and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Wilson Palacios pick up the slack. Following tonight’s match the Soca Warriors depart tomorrow morning at 6am for Nashville, Tennesse where they meet USA in another qualifier on Wednesday night. In the other matches, Costa Rica 2-0 winners over Honduras on match day one travels to Mexico while El Salvador, who came from behind to draw 2-2 at home with T&T is at home again to USA, which won 2-0 at home to Mexico on February 11.

Jorsling seeks Dubai challenge
Soldier of fortune off to Middle East

TT Express Lasana Liburd

Trinidad and Tobago striker Devon Jorsling left the Piarco International Airport on Tuesday afternoon on a flight to Dubai that will take him just under 24 hours to complete. It is a long way to go for respect but the 25-year-old soldier is desperate for a new challenge.

Al Dhafra Sports and Culture Club, a United Arab Emirates First Division outfit, were on the hunt for a target man with physical presence and an eye for goal. Their search led them to the Trinidad and Tobago Pro League and the Defence Force number nine who topped all domestic scorers with 29 goals in all competitions.

Jorsling and Al Dhafra will size each other up, over the next two weeks, before agreeing to an initial six-month deal. The prospective move might put the left-footed striker outside the radar of national senior team coach Francisco Maturana. But then his performances at Pro League level did not do as much as expected and Jorsling hopes that success on foreign soil, albeit in the Middle East rather than Europe, would show his potency in any environment.

"It is a good opportunity to come up against different guys," Josling told the Sunday Express. "It will test me. Who knows; it might help me to get a better look in the national team."

The former Malick Secondary Comprehensive student has never been afraid to blaze his own trail.

Jorsling, a Morvant resident, got much of his early football education in south Trinidad as a W Connection youth player. At 17, he toured Venezuela with the Connection senior team but his failure to immediately break into the senior ranks prompted him to switch camps to Caledonia AIA.

At 18, he scored two goals in his debut season with the "Eastern Stallions" where he was understudy to Warren Butler and Trevor Puckerin. But then came a setback which proved to be a turning point in his career.

Jorsling grabbed headlines with a double strike as the Trinidad and Tobago national under-20 squad whipped hosts Suriname 4-0 to advance. But he suffered a broken leg in the process and was unavailable for the next round as T&T, who also had Kenwyne Jones and Clyde Leon in their ranks, were eliminated by Cuba.

Jorsling was unable to kick a ball for two years while, as his Caledonia contract had expired, his mother, Charmaine Jorsling, footed the medical bills and saw about his financial needs. The five-foot-eight striker saw his weight soar to 230 pounds as he moped about his misfortune.

"My mom begged me to join the army when I recovered," he said, "so my future could be more secure and I would still have a job if something like this ever happened to me again."

Jorsling still remembers the lonely evenings when he jogged around the Queen's Park Savannah and then peered in his mirror at home and struggled to see improvement as he fought with his weight.

"I felt like (my comeback) wasn't going to happen plenty times," said Jorsling. "I was trying to do the correct thing and I wasn't seeing any improvement. But I felt I was too young to give up."

Lieutenant Henry Charles, the then Defence Force team manager, arranged enrolment for the podgy striker and the rigorous army training sorted him out. Jorsling repaid them with goals.

He was his club's top scorer in three from five seasons at Defence Force and, in 2008, was arguably the only credible challenge to Clico San Juan Jabloteh captain Trent Noel as Pro League MVP. He has scored against every club in the top flight.

Defenders who got too close were often held off by his upper body strength and left clutching air as he cleverly swiveled past them. Those who backed away discovered the range and ferocity of his left foot.

His link up play is good too. Jorsling has a sure first touch and an eye for the early pass.

The devastating speed is missing, though, and it might explain why Maturana, who seems to favour long, early balls behind the opposing defence, has routinely overlooked the forward. His aerial game is average too.

Still, Jorsling insists that he can flourish in any system and three goals from one start and three substitute appearances under the Colombian coach suggest he has a case.

"I do feel disappointed that I didn't make the Caribbean Cup finals in Jamaica," said Jorsling, whose crucial goal against Guyana put the "Soca Warriors" there in the first place. "I play in the Pro League and the most I can do is to try to be the best in the Pro League and I think I was (statistically).

"I don't have the speed of a Cornell Glen but what I lack in speed I make up in technical ability. Stern John wasn't fast nor Jason Scotland. I don't know how they look at it. But at the end of the day it is the coach's decision."

Trinidad and Tobago seem overstaffed with forwards at the moment and Maturana has preferred to play with just one at any given time.

At present, Jorsling is behind in a queue that includes Jones, John, Glen, Scotland, Errol McFarlane and Andre Toussaint. There is more quality in the fringes too with the likes of Darryl Roberts, Jerol Forbes, Conrad Smith and Jamal Gay also hoping for a shot.

If all goes well at Al Dhafra, Jorsling hopes to make his own international case from a few continents away. McFarlane was a surprise pick from the Lebanon league for the Caribbean Cup and his three goals there could not have harmed his case for a squad pick.

Jorsling hopes his United Arab Emirates adventure, if it gets going, is at least as beneficial.

Trini plans Obama inauguration
By SUZANNE SHEPPARD Thursday, December 4 2008 Newsday

Collin Abraham, who scored another major event earlier this year as event planner for the wedding of US celebrities Beyonce Knowles and Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, is the man in charge of planning and decor for the inauguration at the Capitol in Washington DC, on January 20.

In a telephone interview yesterday from New York where he runs a major event planning and design firm, Pollen Nation, Abraham told Newsday he was excitedly looking forward to being a part of the historic event.

“I am for Trinidad and Tobago all the way and I am happy that a son of the soil has shown the talent to be a part of this. I welcome the challenge,” Abraham said. He added that he was eagerly looking forward to playing his part in an event which is sure to get worldwide attention.

Abraham, 39, said he was invited to be event planner for the inauguration several weeks ago after he did a Breast Cancer Week function for current First Lady Laura Bush. At the time the US elections had not yet taken place. When Barack Obama won the election, Abraham got a call back from officials in Washington asking if he was still interested in handling planning and decor for the event.

“Of course I said yes. I was elated to have the opportunity - this is very exciting!” the former Barataria resident said. He is now gearing up for a very hectic December and January. He will be in Washington DC, from December 10 to 12 to do a walk through with State Department officials and then it will be full speed ahead with preparations for the inauguration. By now Abraham should be used to planning five-star events. In addition to the Beyonce-Jay Z nuptials he has designed for US celebrities such as hip hop mogul Sean “P Diddy” Combs, L.A. Reid and Warner Music.

He did Beyoncé’s birthday and album-release party following the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. For that event, Abraham encased flowers, manzanita branches and live bees in five-foot-tall glass tanks and created a floral arch of green, pink, orange and white orchids, magnolias and hydrangeas at the entrance.

For the secret celebrity wedding, which took place at Jay Z’s Manhattan apartment, Abraham worked closely with Beyonce on the colour theme and floral design — ivory and cream with whites and greens, orchids with garlands from floor to ceiling and columns of branches with crystals at the end.

A graduate of Barataria Senior Comprehensive, Abraham migrated to the United States in 1998. He pursued a course in sound engineering and worked as a floral decorator at the Waldorf- Astoria before launching Pollen Nation in 1999.

Abraham, who last visited his homeland in July, is planning another trip to TT early next year, very likely for Carnival.

Football / "Free Kick" Spray

Will be interesting to see if this gains traction...

Argentines use 'free-kick' spray
BBC News

The Argentine Football Association is to introduce an aerosol spray to stop defenders creeping closer to the ball during a free-kick.

From next year, referees will use the spray in first division matches.

Referees will mark a temporary white line 9.15 metres (10 yards) from the ball, which defenders cannot cross. The spray will disappear 30 seconds later.

Pablo Silva, who invented the spray, got the idea when he failed to score with a free-kick at an amateur match.

"In the 88th minute, we were losing 1-0 and won a free-kick on the edge of the area. When I took the kick, the wall was three metres away," he told Reuters earlier this year.

"The referee didn't book anyone and didn't do anything," he said.

"We lost the game, and driving home later, with a mixture of anger and bitterness, I thought that we must invent something to stop this."

The spray has been trialled in second division matches and a similar spray has been used in some competitions in Brazil.

Passion and prejudice

Fazeer Mohammed

Wednesday, November 26th 2008

A little bit again and I thought he woulda jump over the counter and rest two cuff-at least-on me.

"He" is someone so passionately supportive of Russell Latapy that just mentioning "the Little Magician" and "old" in the same sentence was enough to set off a heated argument that prompted almost everyone else crammed into the family business place last Saturday morning to forget about electrical wires, plugs and PVC conduit and lend their voices to the raging debate.

In the end, there was no winner (is there ever when these impromptu verbal confrontations take place?), but even as my combatant continued to scream his protestations, to the point of almost losing his voice, at the disrespect shown by the local media towards one of our greatest-ever footballers, I knew I was onto an excellent topic for a column.

Of course, being involved in the media, I have the unfair advantage of more than one platform to clarify my position while my opponent-a very good electrician, I might add-does not. So, let me try as best as possible to present his case, then mine, and let you be the judge.

As someone who played alongside and against Latapy as a youthman in Carenage, who has grown up following every step of this gifted player's career and noted carefully the media's treatment of the midfielder, especially now that he has come back, at the age of 40, to again make a significant difference to another World Cup qualifying campaign, the view, as expressed at the very top of a straining voice, was that we media people like to just pull down our own.

In support of that contention, it was noted that arguably the greatest player of all time, Pele, recently wrote glowingly of Latapy, who, in case anyone missed it, made history as the oldest player to score in World Cup qualifying when he found the back of the net against the United States in that critical encounter at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on October 15, a game that was eventually won 2-1 with Dwight Yorke, another veteran at 37, getting what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot.

So, the challenge was put forward most forcefully (causing some spectators to forget about what they had come to purchase-not a good thing at all for a place of business): why is it that the media only going on about the man's age when someone of the stature of the legendary Brazilian is so full of praise for Latas and, more importantly, the midfield maestro has once again proven the sceptics woefully wrong?

There were a couple other peripheral points, like Leo Beenhakker doing the country and specifically Trinidad and Tobago football a grave injustice on the global stage when the Dutchman chose not to give Latapy a run until the last few minutes of the final group fixture against Paraguay at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

"That was the only time we see we kinda football!" was the piercing scream, barely discernible amid the rising tide of additional, and equally forthright, opinions from those either for or against the fundamental contention relating to media bias.

On the other hand, my take on the whole issue was, and is, that it is not about the personality but the process, and, fundamentally, being so heavily reliant on so many senior players, with Latapy the most senior of them all, raises serious questions about the structure of the national game and its inability, so far, to produce a younger crop capable of filling the considerable boots of these ageing and long-serving stars.

And yes, I had to do some shouting myself to get the point across, so much so that it took 15 minutes to measure 20 metres of wire (thankfully, the waiting customer didn't mind because he was enjoying the exchange) as I kept losing count in between my own verbal rocket launchers, one surgical strike being along the lines of: "Yes man, bring back all the old fellas. Next thing you go want to dig up George Headley (in keeping with the heavy Jamaican bias) and put a bat in he hand for the West Indies!"

But this supercharged electrician, on the verge of tripping from an overload of outrage, was having none of this "bigger picture" tra-la-la, preferring to lament at how ungrateful so many of us are to a footballer who had given so much and delighted so many on the national and international stage from the time he was barely into his teens.

Reeling from the incessant onslaught, I pulled out what I hoped would be the magic bullet, of the same variety that National Security Minister Martin Joseph says will solve our crime problem in two and a half years from now.

"So tell me something. Who you does support-Trinidad and Tobago or Russell Latapy?"

It was the only time in the 15-minute tirade that there was a pause before, having stumbled only briefly, my adversary shot back: "Allyuh could say what allyuh want, but Latas is my boy all the way!"

With neither side backing down, a stalemate was declared and regular business resumed. Still, in between toting panel boxes and testing blubs aplenty, the question of priority towards individual, team or country lingered.

While you make up your own mind on the issue, I'll await another round of the verbal battle, keeping a mixture of lime and honey handy for my worthy opponent.

General Discussion / Berlusconi says Obama is "tanned"
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:39:47 AM »
BBC News

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has provoked criticism for describing Barack Obama as "young, handsome, and tanned".

He made the remarks after a meeting with the Russian president in Moscow.

Opposition politicians in Italy said Mr Berlusconi's remarks about the US president-elect were at worst, racist and at best, undiplomatic.

Mr Berlusconi shrugged off the criticism, saying those who disagreed with him were humourless "imbeciles".

'Great compliment'

Mr Berlusconi made the quip at a news conference with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

''Obama is young, handsome and also tanned, so he has all the qualities to agree with you,'' he told the Russian leader, speaking in Italian through a translator.

The Italian news agency Ansa said Mr Berlusconi later defended the remark, calling it "a great compliment".

Responding to a reporter's suggestion that the remark might be misunderstood, he accused his opponents of not having a sense of humour.

''God save us from imbeciles,'' he added.

Gaffe prone

The Italian leader has a history of public gaffes.

On his first meeting with Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen in 2002, Berlusconi complimented him with the words: "Mr Rasmussen is not only a great colleague, he's also the best-looking prime minister in Europe."

He added: "He's so good looking, I'm even thinking of introducing him to my wife."

He sparked a minor diplomatic incident in 2005 by suggesting he had wooed Finnish President Tarja Halonen to ensure her backing for Italy to host the European Food Safety Authority.

"I had to use all my playboy tactics, even if they have not been used for some time," he said, prompting Helsinki to call in the Italian ambassador to explain the comments.

T&T coach restricts 'Little Magician' to input on field.
By: Lasana Liburd (Express).

Maturana Limits Latapy.

Trinidad and Tobago football icon and Falkirk midfielder Russell Latapy arrived at Piarco International Airport yesterday and will train with the "Soca Warriors" today for the first time under present head coach Francisco Maturana.

But it might not be in the capacity that he hoped.

Latapy was appointed, on September 21, as a player/coach by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) for crucial upcoming 2010 World Cup qualifiers away to Guatemala on October 11 and at home to the United States on October 15.

But Maturana, a two-time Colombia World Cup coach, told the Express the Scotland-based playmaker would only join his team as a player.

Maturana, when questioned on Latapy's role within his technical staff, smiled and said--through translator Ancil Glod--that he would also like to know.

He then pointed to each of his staff members, including assistant coach Anton Corneal, who huddled around after yesterday evening's training session for the national team at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

"This is my staff here," said Maturana. "I want to see Latapy on the field."

Latapy, who turned 40 this year, made his coaching ambitions clear on several occasions, but is yet to convince the TTFF he is ready for the top post.

In 2005, FIFA vice-president and TTFF special adviser Jack Warner appointed Latapy as a player/coach under Dutchman Leo Beenhakker, but the former Real Madrid coach refused to allow him on his technical staff.

At the time, Latapy refused to join the national squad unless he was also allowed to coach, but eventually returned as a player--after pleading from his close friend and team captain Dwight Yorke--to dramatic effect as he inspired a 3-2 win over Guatemala in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup.

Maturana suggested that Latapy might again have the opportunity to cast a spell on Guatemala on Saturday, but only as a player.

"The doors of the national team are always open," said Maturana. "He is a good player."

The Warriors trained without several foreign-based players yesterday, including Yorke, Latapy, Carlos Edwards, Chris Birchall, Jason Scotland and Dennis Lawrence.

Walsall goalkeeper Clayton Ince and Southampton striker Stern John were the only England-based players who returned on time to train, while United States-based defender Avery John was also present.

Another familiar face at the session was Sunderland star Kenwyne Jones, who came home to attend the funeral of a family member and was allowed to train with the national squad by his club manager Roy Keane.

Jones had company. Sunderland physiotherapist Craig Tears was sent to Trinidad to ensure that Jones "followed his rehabilitation programme" and did not "over-extend himself".

Tears, who was dressed in his club's kit, kept a watchful eye on the T&T team session from the sidelines.

"Everyone (at Sunderland) wanted my assignment," said Tears, with a laugh.

While Jones trained with the squad, John (S) worked out on his own. The national record goal-scorer is recovering from a slight hamstring tear but is desperate to play and said the Southampton medical staff expected him to be ready for action by Thursday.

"It is fantastic to be back," said John, who has 69 international goals from 104 appearances. "Wednesday's game (against the Dominican Republic) is definitely out but I am just trying to get myself fit for Saturday... It is always a pleasure to score goals but, whether I play for just five minutes, this is bigger than Stern John.

"It is about Trinidad and Tobago."

John cannot wait to be reunited with his former heroes and teammates, Yorke and Latapy, who, he feels, can still assist the national squad.

"It is always great to have the likes of Russell and Dwight in the team," he said. "They might not have the legs as before but they can always lift the guys."

Maturana insisted he is happy to have Latapy, too. But perhaps not in the role that everyone expected.

General Discussion / Trinis take the lead in murders

Badly worded title, implies overall # of homicides exceeds that in any other Caribbean country, what is true is that the rate of increase does exceed that of the latter, # of homicides is currently ~ 1/2 that of JA per capita.

Overall, a truly sad state of affairs irrespective of the above details

Football / T&T's Hyland nears Portsmouth switch

T&T and former Clico San Juan Jabloleh player Khaleem Hyland is expected to head back to Portsmouth within the next couple of days to complete a deal with the club which has kept tabs on him for the past few months.

Hyland and current Jabloteh players Atullah Guerra and Lester Peltier, were on the brink of moving to the English Barclays Premiership club last season but due to the lack of international appearances needed in order to be granted a work permit by the UK I-Tome Office of Employment and a lack of co-operation on the part of some local T&T Football Federation officials the deal never materialised.

During their time in England, Hyland, Peltier and Guerra had trials at Arsenal, Portsmouth, Millwail and Scottish champions, Celtic who were reportedly prepared to pay £450,000 for Hyland and on a three-year contract.

Contacted for comment, Jabloteh coach, Terry Fenwick who was the man responsible of getting the trials organised for the trio said, 'Hyland's move abroad is imminent.

Fenwick added, "He is just awaiting his work permit and we are very confident that it will be approved this time as he has been a permanent fixture on the national for the past year!'.

Dutch powerhouse Ajax of Amsterdam were also said to be chasing the signature of Hyland last season and was rumoured to be willing to pay a similar fee to Celtic while offering Jabloteh 20 per cent of any sell- on fee.

Football / Gattuso delivers Liverpool taunt
« on: May 08, 2007, 11:04:49 AM »
Tenors, don't blame the messenger  ;D

BBC Sport

AC Milan midfielder Rino Gattuso has launched a stinging attack on Liverpool's "long ball" tactics ahead of the Champions League final.
Gattuso, 29, who played in the 2005 final defeat in Istanbul, dismissed Liverpool as an inferior side to semi-final opponents Manchester United.

He said: "I feel there is a noticeable difference in talent between Manchester United and Liverpool.

"Liverpool are like an Italian team of 10 years ago. Every ball a long ball."

He added: "All they try to do is defend with everybody behind the ball and one striker.

"United have far more technical players, who are quick and able to do things on the ball. Liverpool do not have those individuals."

And Gattuso set his sights on revenge for 2005, when Liverpool came from 3-0 down at half-time to win on penalties.

He said: "This final will be different - that I promise. It is important to put the record straight."
