EVA Air has teamed up with Sanrio to launch a second generation of Hello Kitty Jets.  Company officials and approximately 450 invited guests, including tourism, airfreight and aviation industry representatives, EVA Air Diamond Card frequent flyers, Hello Kitty fans and media celebrated the unveiling on Oct. 27, 2011 at a Happy Magic Party in a specially decorated Evergreen Aviation Technologies hangar adjacent to Taipei, Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport.

Light, magical and fun, the party was hosted by EVA Air President Kuo-Wei Chang and Sanrio Vice President Tsuji Kunihiko. The winner of a Golden Melody Award from Taiwan sang and Harmonyland dancers from Japan joined EVA flight attendants in an energetic performance.  Then, as guests waved illuminated wands, cheered and clapped, the new Hello Kitty Jet made a dramatic appearance from behind raised curtains.

http://www.thestarklife.com/2012/01/13/nicole-lyons-in-hot-pursuit/

While she may be gorgeous, don’t let Nicole Lyons‘ pretty face fool you. She’s been bred by L.A.’s finest in the street racing game and has been racing since the tender age of seven. A speed demon, she knows no limit and when she gets behind the wheel, she burns rubber till she crosses the finish line. Nicole digs in on all the parts that drive her.

You’re a beautiful, Black woman. Why and how did someone like you get into racing cars?I was so lucky to be the only child and daughter of Jack Davis, a Los Angeles famed street racer, racecar driver, muscle car builder and race engine builder. So I guess you can say it is in my DNA. I started racing carts at age seven and started racing real racecars at 15. I knew from the age of two I wanted to be a racecar driver.

How would you describe your father, Jack Davis, and his legacy as a drag racer?
My father was the true, legit “Fast and Furious”. He was a Los Angeles racing legend who won a tremendous amount of races both on the track and on the street. He brought the Los Angeles street racing scene to the San Fernando Valley and became a street legend racing in high-dollar stake street races. He was huge for minorities in the game; as a Black man who had major racing/building knowledge and he became the go-to guy for the major players in street racing for engine and racecar work, and made a ton of money both racing and working on street racer cars. One thing my dad always said was they can never take knowledge away from you; it commands respect and he was right. His knowledge commanded respect even when racial tension was high in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s.

When you’re suiting up for a race and strapping yourself into your car, do you carry the weight of having to prove yourself because you’re a woman and/or Black? Do you ever walk in feeling underestimated?
To be honest, I never carry weight of having to prove myself as a woman or a Black woman because in order to truly be good in a racecar, you should have no other thoughts in your mind but winning and doing it in a safe manner. Once you strap in and put your helmet on and get in that car, you are just another competitor lining up to race. Even though I am the only Black woman doing what I do in NHRA/ADRL car drag racing, I am a racecar driver and I prove myself just like every other racer by my accomplishments on the track. I never feel underestimated. I guess because I grew up on my dad’s motto of: “They have no other choice but to respect knowledge”, and he was right. He gave me that confidence to walk in a room and feel like the best there because I am more than just a pretty face or just a driver. I build engines, cars, and feel confident in the decisions I have made to do to my racecar for the race. Now do I want people to recognize a beautiful Black woman just whopped them on the track? Heck yeah, I do! But I don’t have to say anything. When I pull my helmet off, it says it all. When I win races, it says it all.
We know you love racing, but outside of that reason, why else do you do what you’re doing? What’s the ultimate message you want to get across? Is there one?
Yes, I was born to race but I also have a huge drive to do it and do it well because my message is if you stick to something and give it your entire 200 percent effort— because 100 percent is sometimes not enough— you will succeed. Racing is a money-dominated sport besides your talent. And I did not come from a wealthy family; just an average income, average home but wealthy with love and support family. I want kids to fight for their right using knowledge to get ahead and succeed. And I want kids to see me and whether or not they want to be a racecar driver, I hope to influence them to achieve their goals and achieve them knowing you will run into obstacles. But the best part in achieving these goals is learning how to outsmart the obstacles and/or learn from them.

What would you say is the difference between NHRA and NASCAR?
NHRA is do or die, a wild, wild west style of racing. You have one shot to win, which makes things extremely tense and it’s the fastest motorsports racing in the world. NASCAR, you have several laps that can be out of your control—situations that can happen and can cause you to win or lose, like a huge wreck that takes you from let’s say 14th to 2nd. But NASCAR racing is extremely intense because you are going 200 mph, having to maneuver between other racecars and wrecks. I have love for both forms of racing.

Do you plan on pursuing NASCAR? If so, how huge of an aspiration is that?
I do plan on pursuing NASCAR and will this year, to go along with my already crazy drag racing schedule. I plan on being that Dion Sanders of racing, basically having race seasons that have schedules of both drag racing and NASCAR racing. This will be the first year we attempt this and I am truly excited.

You and your dad were best friends, but how did your mother influence you? Was she supportive? My mother is a great businesswoman and has helped me in so many ways, especially in my business endeavors. At first, my mom was a little scared to have her only child going 240 mph in just a quarter mile, but once she saw just how talented and passionate I was, she’s been extremely supportive. My parents did everything they could to start my career in 2005, even refinanced their home so I could race professionally. My entire family—from my husband to mother-in-law, to my best friend giving up her regular stable job to learn how to become our team’s data specialist— had my back when I started racing NHRA in 2005 and trust me, it was hard, especially losing my father a week before my NHRA debut. But we did it and beat the #3 ranked racer right off the bat. It was a sign from my dad [that] everything was going to be okay.

Okay so you’re married. Do you have kids or want to have some?Yes, to Damion Lyons, ex-pro football player who co-owns Cole Muscle Cars with me and also works on my race team. No, we have no kids. We do have a dog if that counts and 13 muscle cars, two racecars, but that probably still doesn’t count [Laughs]. But, we want kids. We’re just very focused on my career right now and being still young. I have plenty of time and who knows, we are pro adoption. We [will] have some of our own and adopt as well, when the time is right.

Racing is one thing, the car another. What do you know about cars?
I know how to build cars and have built award-winning engines. I was selected because of my building knowledge and skills to be the lead engine and drive train specialist on the All Star team, on the Speed TV show Car Warriors, where we built cars in literally 72 hours. We did nine episodes in 2011. I also own Cole Muscle Cars with my husband, which is a premier Los Angeles muscle car restoration shop, where we restore rare hot rods and muscle cars for clients.

Do you think guys are intimidated by you? And what about women?
Let’s just say it was hard to get a date when your car, at 15, was better than most men’s cars at 50. Then, you knew how to race and build cars. I definitely intimidated some weak-minded men and still do intimidate some men. I know I have intimidated some women as well. I think a lot of people can be intimidated by determination combined with talent.

Did you go to school?
I did go to school and my college was the Jack Davis School of Racing and Building Cars [Laughs]! …But I do believe in anything relating to education. It’s a key nobody can down play; knowledge is an amazing weapon to have.
Outside of being behind the wheel, what else is Nicole Lyons in “hot pursuit” of? Do you have a quirky talent or a secret desire to become a chef one day?
I really loved being on set and filming for TV. I think I may one day pursue acting, as I believe I could be the main girl in several action movies. I am a black belt and can do my own race stunts. It’s definitely something I may pursue after I win a ton of championships in racing.
If the world knows nothing else, what should we know about you?
I am focused and determined to succeed in anything I do, even if I start something and realize “Ahhhh! Darn this is not for me.” I still complete what I started.

Are women or men better drivers?
I think women are better drivers. We are graceful and have better reaction time. We finesse a wheel instead of manhandling it.

Ailing Austrian shot dead in bed
Cops puzzled over 'suicide'
Story Created: Jan 31, 2012 at 11:02 PM ECT

SUICIDE is suspected in the death of a former counsellor of Austria, who was found shot to death in his bed at his Valsayn home early yesterday.

The victim has been identified by police as 82-year-old Rudolf Sturm, of 13 Woodlands Road, North Valsayn.

He was discovered with gunshot injuries to the body in his bed around 7.30 a.m. yesterday by his wife, Urmilla Maharaj, 40, who notified the police.

Police said Sturm was ailing for some time with cancer and may have shot himself with his licensed 9mm pistol while at his home.

They are a bit puzzled over the fact that the victim was shot twice in the chest.

His pistol, believed to be the weapon used in the incident, was found under his body. Police have recovered two spent shells from the scene.

Police said Maharaj reported to them that when she awoke shortly after 6 p.m., she called out to Sturm but got no reply. She left home and went to purchase doubles and upon returning, she decided to make a check on Sturm and found him dead.

According to police, a 30-year-old employee of Sturm was held on Monday after Maharaj reported the employee stole a quantity of jewelry, amounting to $900,000, from the residence over a period of time.

Up to late yesterday, the woman, who hailed from Las Lomas, remained in custody at the St Joseph Police Station.

Officers said they found what appeared to be a suicide note in the victim's room near his body.

A post-mortem is expected to be conducted on the victim's body later today at the Forensic Science Centre in St James to determine if he shot himself twice in the chest.

ASP Nazrool Hosein and Insp Seemungal Rampersad, including Sgts Vetus Hernandez, David, Cpls Bennett, Ashram Dass, Hezron Lynch and PCs Subash Harripersad and Sunil Ramoutar, were among the officers who visited the scene.

General Discussion / Perspective of a new Chinese Immigrant in TT
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:34:48 PM »
China to the Eastern Main Road in Arouca
Yun ying Cao from Guangdong Real Women, Real Stories takes a journey to China and lands right in Arouca, in East Trinidad. Yun ying Cao, a Chinese native who manages her family's Chinese restaurant, Kam Wong, located on the Eastern Main Road, Arouca, guides us through her transitional journey from a land where more than one child is taboo to a land where life is, perhaps, too liberal

It's a cool Tuesday morning and I walk into Kam Wong, a Chinese restaurant in Arouca, to interview Yu ying Cao. She is a pleasant Chinese woman, a bit on the short side with straight, shoulder-length black hair. "Do you speak English?" I ask her slowly. "Do you speak Chinese?" she responds with a smile. "I can speak just a little English but not much," she adds more seriously. She is ready and willing to share her story but she hopes that her English is enough to carry us through the next few minutes. I promise to speak more English and less Trini so that she can understand. At this point another older Chinese woman approaches the front counter holding a baby in her arms. "She is mother-in-law and the baby is my youngest daughter, Yun Lan," Cao says, looking tenderly at a cooing and smiling Yun Lan. "I have three daughters. Yun Lan, Yunxi who is 6 years and Yunyi who is three years old. The two older ones at school now. My mother-in-law take care of baby so I work in restaurant with my husband," the native of Guangdong, China then informs. Her expression then becomes as distant as her homeland and she sighs, "I couldn't have so many children in China. There is law against more than one child born to any family in China. Population too high.

"When I had first child, my family was disappointed. In China best thing is to have boy child. When you make girl first time, government allow you to try for boy but if you make girl again or any after that, you not get benefits from government for excess children. No schooling, nothing, you have to pay government for benefits instead."

I then learn that in some parts of China an entire family can be barred from benefits as a result of the law and not just the excess children alone. "I am glad last two children born in Trinidad!" Cao exclaims. Yunxi was the only child born in China. As the proud mother makes her way to the kitchen, she rattles out something in Chinese to one of her workers. I don't understand a word she says as up to this minute Cao's English is better than I thought, but my Chinese is terrible. "Hmmm, how do you say…?" and with that she takes her cellphone and types. She then tells me that her phone has a Chinese to English translator and she shows me her English translated word: "Satisfied." "I am this word," she claims pointing to her phone. "I don't want more children. I work hard at restaurant so I don't have time to care for more!"

Between her dictionary translations and passable English she tries to enlighten me about her two contrasting worlds (China and Trinidad). "I came from China seven years ago with my husband and mother-in-law to start restaurant business in Trinidad. My husband had brothers living here so we hear about Trinidad and we come. We started Kam Wong and up to now I still send money to China for my parents. I think that children must care for parents so I send money back to China.

My mother-in-law take care of children and my husband and I take care of customer," she asserts. A medium built Chinese man then approaches us and smiles at her. They converse in her native language once more. Reading the clueless expression on my face she pronounces, "I tell him you from newspapers, he okay with it!" As the time draws closer to lunch time, customers start filing in gradually. They ask for the special of the day — chow mein, fried rice, chunky veg and chicken. "What we cook here in Trinidad is not Chinese food, it more …what is the word?" I look at her cell phone — "South American food." South American food? All these years I buying South American food and I thought it was Chinese! "We don't eat brown rice in China. No, we eat jasmine rice, brown rice too hard, don't like it. We don't eat this type of noodle, no, we eat lula noodle, you could get that in Hong Kong Supermarket in town. In China we eat real Chinese not what I cook here. I miss my food. We don't have chunky veg in China we cook single vegetables." A few minutes later I see some patchoi drying in her backyard in the sun, against a backdrop of a kitchen garden with the biggest chives I have ever seen.

She declares that her family maintains a garden and eats a lot of patchoi soup and broiled vegetables, not the fried foods served at the restaurant. "I would love to cook authentic Chinese food, steam food, but my husband say customer no like it, they want fry chicken so we cook it!" she exclaims. I ask her the burning question that I always wanted to ask a Chinese food retailer, "Why did you choose Trinidad to live?" She smiles at the question and begins to type into her phone: "We came to Trinidad for..." Her phone reads: "a mission". She continues, "We came here because business better here, you can make more money here, China is more laid back and too…" Her phone reads, "competitive!" But in as much as business is booming in T&T, Cao still misses her home dearly. "I miss my family and friends. I have friends here in Trinidad but when I go out nobody understand me, I feel so alone sometimes and scared…crime too high!" she avows sadly. Looking down at her apron she confesses, "I go exercise class in Bon Air High School but I still different," she utters. Her accent and edgy oriental features always stand out, she explains.
"In China there is so much to do and enjoy with children. In Trinidad everywhere close early so when I finish work in night I can't do anything. In China stores open for 24 hours". Her favourite time is Sundays, however, when she and her family go to an authentic Chinese Christian Church in St Joseph where sermons are read in Chinese. These moments give her a taste of home as regular visits to China are impossible with the costly commute. "Perhaps if you discover Trinidad some more, you may feel more comfortable," I suggest. "Not that I no like Trinidad but home will always be home," she advises. "You like Carnival?" I ask. "I never been," she replies. I then suggest an outing for her and the kids for Kiddies Carnival in Arima. She lights up with this suggestion. "I will come, you call me!" she assures.

Right at that moment an Indian man comes into the restaurant "Chinee how much you taking today," he queries holding a bag of patchoi in his hands. "I have to attend to business, have to go," she apologises. She leaves me with one more written translation though but this time its not from her cellphone but hand written in Chinese and English. Her message is — God bless you. I smile and say thank you in English and then say, "Bai Bai" — the informal way to say goodbye in Chinese and the only Chinese word I know.

Iran Scientist Killed in New Attack Against Nuclear Work

Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- An Iranian nuclear scientist was killed in a Tehran bomb blast, state media reported, in at least the third assassination targeting the nation’s atomic program that the U.S. and Israel have vowed to halt.

Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a director at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in Isfahan province, and another person died, Fars said. Tehran Deputy-Governor Safar-Ali Bratlou told the state-run agency that a magnetic device was placed under Roshan’s car by a person on a motorcycle. He said the method was similar to previous attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists and blamed Israel for the killing.

“This terrorist action was undertaken by elements of the Zionist regime and those who claim to fight against terrorism,” the official Islamic Republic News Agency cited Iranian Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi as saying.

“We condemn any assassination or attack on an innocent person,” U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said today in Washington. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said by telephone he had no comment on the reports.

Iranian officials have accused the U.S. and Israel of targeting Iranian nuclear scientists in an effort to halt the nuclear program, which western nations say is aimed at producing atomic weapons. European Union ministers plan to meet on Jan. 23 to discuss imposing an oil embargo on Iran. Iranian officials have threatened to shut the Strait of Hormuz, a transit route for a fifth of the world’s oil, if crude exports are sanctioned.

Oil Markets

Oil fell as U.S. crude and fuel supplies climbed more than analysts estimated. Crude for February delivery declined 82 cents, or 0.8 percent, to $101.42 a barrel at 11:27 a.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Today’s attack “comes in the middle of heightened tensions and it helps Iran to play on a sense of threat that it is under a lot of pressure,” Gala Riani, a Middle East analyst at London-based forecaster IHS Global Insight, said by telephone. “It can also be beneficial to more extremist elements in the government who are supporting further military drills in the Strait of Hormuz.”

Iran conducted naval exercises near the Strait of Hormuz for 10 days that ended early this month. Iran also announced on Jan. 6 plans for “naval war games” to be conducted by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps next month

Previous attacks against Iranian nuclear scientists include the assassination of Massoud Ali-Mohammadi, killed by a bomb outside his Tehran home in January 2010, and an explosion in November of that year that took the life of Majid Shahriari and wounded Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, who is now the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization.

While it is difficult to gauge the impact of the scientists’ deaths on the country’s nuclear development, Iranian officials have already acknowledged they have a human-resources problem in the program, largely because of the sharp political differences within the country,” Meir Javedanfar, lecturer on Iranian politics at the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center in Israel, said in a telephone interview.

A series of accidents in Iran in recent months have raised suspicions of sabotage against the country’s nuclear program.

A November explosion at a military base west of Tehran killed at least 17 people including a Revolutionary Guards director, state media reported at the time. Last year, malicious software known as Stuxnet affected some of the country’s computer systems and several centrifuges used in its uranium- enrichment program, Iranian officials have said.

Spying Accusations

The latest bomb blast follows an Iranian court’s Jan. 9 decision to sentence an American of Iranian descent, Amir Mirzaei Hekmati, to death for spying. Nuland of the State Department has said allegations that Hekmati worked for the CIA were “simply untrue.”

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner met China’s Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice President Xi Jinping and will visit Japan tomorrow as he seeks to urge the nations to cut petroleum purchases from Iran.

“Our enemies are seeing that sanctions and pressure are not sufficient, so they are seeking to create an atmosphere that is driven by a need for security,” Fars quoted Bratlou as saying after the blast.

http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/article/1058440--nhl-calls-banana-thrown-at-simmonds-stupid-and-ignorant?bn=1

LONDON, ONT.— The NHL called it “stupid and ignorant.” Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds said he’s “above this sort of stuff.”

A banana was thrown from the stands in London, Ont., on Thursday night as Simmonds was skating toward Detroit goalie Jordan Pearce during a shootout in an exhibition game. Simmonds is black.

“We have millions of great fans who show tremendous respect for our players and for the game,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement Friday. “The obviously stupid and ignorant action by one individual is in no way representative of our fans or the people of London, Ontario.”

Despite the disruption, Simmonds scored in the shootout, but the Red Wings went on to win 4-3.

“It shocked me and I knew I had to keep going and get a shot off,” said Simmonds, who is from Toronto. “It was certainly unusual.”

“I don’t know if it had anything to do with the fact I’m black,” he added. “I certainly hope not. When you’re black, you kind of expect (racist) things. You learn to deal with it.”

He also scored with less than a minute left in the third period to make the score 3-3. Simmonds said in a statement Friday he wants to concentrate strictly on the game.

“It was unfortunate that this incident happened, but I am above this sort of stuff,” he said. “This is something that is obviously out of my control. Moving forward, this incident is something that I will no longer comment on so I can just focus playing hockey for the Philadelphia Flyers.”

London Mayor Joe Fontana apologized to Simmonds and the Flyers on Friday on behalf of his city.

“It was a stupid and mindless act by a single individual,” he said in a statement. “However, it reflects badly on our entire community. London is a diverse and welcoming city and we like it that way.”

Norton Sports, a California sports management group that does not manage Simmonds, offered a $500 reward for the identity of the banana thrower. The Twitter offer quickly drew others promising to add to the reward. As of Friday morning, Simmonds was a trending topic on the social network.

Kevin Weekes, a former NHL goaltender and current CBC color commentator who is black, had a banana thrown at him during the 2002 playoffs in Montreal while he played for Carolina.

“I’m not surprised,” said Weekes. “We have some people that still have their heads in the sand and some people that don’t necessarily want to evolve and aren’t necessarily all that comfortable with the fact that the game is evolving. I understand that firsthand — I’m the first black national broadcaster in NHL history, the first black broadcaster on ‘Hockey Night in Canada.’

“The reality is that there’s still some people that aren’t very comfortable with that. Sometimes I’ll get examples of it on Twitter.”

San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture, who grew up near London, posted: “Wayne Simmonds is a good friend of mine. To hear what happened tonight to him in my hometown is awful. No need for this in sports, or life.”

The rare NHL game at the 9,090-capacity John Labatt Centre drew a crowd of 7,427. The arena is operated by Global Spectrum, a subsidiary of the Flyers’ parent company Comcast-Spectacor.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to identify the individual,” said Peter Luukko, president and chief operating officer of Comcast-Spectacor.

“We certainly don’t condone such a foolish act (like this) as a player could potentially be seriously injured,” he said in a statement. “This is ninth time we have played here in London and the fans have always been wonderful to us.”

Although London is closer to Detroit, Thursday’s game was officially a home game for the Red Wings. The crowd loudly backed Detroit and was invited on the public address system to consider various ticket packages to Wings’ games.

World’s Biggest Sperm Bank Shows Redheads to the Door

ABC News’ Mikaela Conley reports:

Gingers may not be feeling the love these days. Cryos International, the largest sperm bank in the world, has closed its door to redheads — at least for the moment, according to a report in the International Business Times.

“I do not think you chose a redhead, unless the partner, for example, the sterile male — has red hair, or because the lone woman has a preference for redheads,” Ole Schou, director of Cryos International, told the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. “And that’s perhaps not so many, especially in the latter case.”

Ouch.

The bank has reached its capacity of 70 sperm liters, with 600 donors on its waiting list. While ginger swimmers sell “like hotcakes” in Ireland, Schou said few people outside the Emerald Isle are as eager to have a redheaded baby.

Demand for sperm is everywhere, Schou told the Danish newspaper, particularly from men who are tall, with brown eyes and dark hair are the biggest sellers. Much of the demand for tall, dark and handsome comes from southern Europe, including Spain, Italy and Greece, Schou reported. But many Scandinavians also demand the look, in hopes of veering away from the typical blonde and blue-eyed Danish baby, Schou told the newspaper.  Indian sperm is also reportedly in high demand and short supply because sperm is not allowed to be legally exported outside of India.

The only continent where sperm has not been sent is Antarctica. Depending on the quality of the sperm, men can make 250 to 500 kroner in Denmark… that is, as long as he’s not a redhead.

'Don't ask, don't tell' formally ends

An 18-year-old law that prevented serving US military personnel from disclosing that they were gay has been formally repealed.

At one minute past midnight eastern time (0401 GMT), the controversial don't ask don't tell (DADT) law was abolished after its repeal was signed into law some nine months ago.

Introduced by President Clinton in 1993 as a compromise step to full equality, DADT allowed gay and lesbian members of the military to serve only if their sexuality remained secret or was not reported.

The Servicemembers Legal Defence Network estimates that since the law's introduction, 13,000 gay men and lesbians have been discharged after their sexual orientation was revealed.

In some cases dismissals were made on the basis of testimony from jilted lovers or those with personal grievances.

Barack Obama had pledged to overturn DADT during his 2008 election campaign, but action on the issue appeared stalled until his January 2010 state of the union speech. Injecting fresh energy into the cause Obama said: "This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are."

The call was met with stony silence from members of the military seated in front of the president, who is also commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

Days later, the then defence secretary, Robert Gates, told Senate hearings: "The question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we … best prepare for it. We have received our orders from the commander-in-chief and we are moving out accordingly."

In March 2010 the Pentagon relaxed rules surrounding DADT. The military decided to no longer investigate anonymous complaints and third party testimony had to be sworn under oath.

An internal survey commissioned by the Pentagon and released last year found that two-thirds of all military personnel supported the repeal.

Navy Lieutenant Gary Ross, 33, and Dan Swezy, a 49-year-old civilian, travelled from their home in Arizona to get married in Vermont and take advantage of the law's repeal the moment it came into effect.

The two men recited vows before family and friends at a ceremony which began at 11.45pm on Monday night. Just after midnight, the partners of 11 years were married.

"I think it was a beautiful ceremony. The emotions really hit me … but it's finally official," Ross said.

Polls have consistently showed that roughly two-thirds of Americans believe gay men and lesbians should be able to disclose their sexual orientation and serve openly.

UBS rogue trader charged with fraud

An alleged renegade trader accused of losing Swiss banking giant UBS about $2 billion in unauthorized trading was charged Friday with fraud and false accounting, and ordered to appear before a London court.

City of London police said that 31-year-old Kweku Adoboli would appear at a magistrates' court in the British capital on Friday.

"He remains in police custody and is due to appear at City of London Magistrates this afternoon," the police department said in a statement. It said an investigation involving financial regulator the Financial Services Authority, the Serious Fraud Office and the Crown Prosecution Service was continuing.

Law firm Kingsley Napley, which represented Nick Leeson — the trader who brought down British bank Barings in 1995 after he made around $1.4 billion of losses in unauthorized trades — said that it had been hired to represent Adoboli.

In Switzerland, UBS faced pressure to explain how its managers failed to catch the $2 billion loss, and how monitoring systems had been unable to flag up the alleged unauthorized trades.

Adoboli, born in Ghana, has been employed by UBS on an equities desk known as Delta One and worked with exchange-traded funds — which track different types of stocks or commodities, such as precious metals.

Some commentators and politicians called for senior managers at UBS to take responsibility for the loss.

"Until UBS has explained in detail how such a significant loss due to unauthorized trading could happen, and how the problem will be solved, confidence will remain impaired," said Andreas Venditti, an analyst at Zuercher Kantonalbank.

UBS stock on Friday recovered some of the losses suffered the day before. Investors took the chance to buy the shares cheaply, sending their price up 3.3 per cent on the Zurich exchange by early afternoon. Shares had slumped 10 per cent the day before, after the bank said a lone employee had caused the massive loss.

Australia adds third gender to passports

AUSTRALIA HAS INTRODUCED new passport rules that will allow people to select their official gender as either male, female or indeterminate.

In what the Wall Street Journal reports is an effort to boost sexual and gender equality, transgender people who haven’t had sex-reassignment surgery will be able to select an alternative gender to male or female when filling out their passport application.

Medical documents supporting the application will be required, but the amendment is intended to make life easier foreign minister Kevin Rudd said.

“[It] significantly reduces the administrative burden for sex- and gender-diverse people who want a passport that reflects their gender and physical appearance,” he said.

AFP reports that the changes, which will see an ‘x’ appear in the gender category of a passport, come into effect immediately and have been hailed as a huge step forward by senator Louise Pratt, Australia’s first parliamentarian with a transgendered partner, who was born a female but is now a man.

“There have been very many cases of people being detained at airports by immigration in foreign countries simply because their passports don’t reflect what they look like,” Pratt told ABC radio.

The changes are only expected to affect a handful of Australians, CNN reports, but it quotes Australian Attorney General Robert McClelland as saying: “It’s an important step in removing discrimination for sex and gender diverse people.”

The UN human rights chief Navi Pillay has called on more governments to follow Australia’s lead saying the country “has placed itself in the vanguard of change and has scored an important victory for human rights,” AP reports.

Giant Crocodile Caught in the Philippines is Biggest Captive Crocodile in the World (Video)

A giant crocodile captured in Agusan del Sur in the Philippines last Saturday, September 2, is believed to be the biggest captive crocodile to date.

The said Philippine adult male crocodile, measuring 21 ft or 6.4 meters long, was captured alive along a creek by crocodile farm staff and residents in Bunawan in Agusan del Sur. It we are to check the records, the Philippine crocodile is the biggest so far.

Two larger certifiable records of the biggest crocodiles in the world are both of 6.2 metres (20 ft) adult crocodiles. The first crocodile was shot in the Mary River in the Northern Territory of Australia in 1974 by poachers and measured by wildlife rangers.

The second crocodile was killed in 1983 in the Fly River, Papua New Guinea. In the case of the second crocodile it was actually the skin that was measured by zoologist Jerome Montague, and as skins are known to underestimate the size of the actual animal, it is possible this crocodile was at least another 10 cm longer.

The largest crocodile ever held in captivity, on the other hand, is an Estuarine–Siamese hybrid named Yai (meaning “big” in Thai) which was born on June 10,1972, at the famous Samutprakarn Crocodile Farm and Zoo in Thailand. This animal measures 6 m (19.69 ft) (19 ft 8 in) in length and weighs 1114.27 kg.

The largest captive crocodile alive in the US is located in South Carolina. In June 2002, Alligator Adventure introduced Utan, born in 1964 in Thailand. At 20 feet (6.1 m) long and weighing in at more than a ton, “Utan”, the largest crocodile to ever be exhibited in the United States resides in Myrtle Beach.

The records are set to be changed as the giant crocodile which was captured in Agusan del Sur over the weekend has a measurement of 6.4 meters, by far the biggest if it becomes official.

Captured alive, the giant crocodile weighs around 2,370 pounds or 1,075 kilograms.

According to the town Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde it took almost 100 people to place the reptile in a fenced cage. The mayor also said that they are planning to build an eco-tourism park for species found in a vast marshland in Agusan (an impoverished region about 515 miles southeast of Manila) featuring the giant crocodile which is about to become the biggest captive crocodile in the world.

The giant crocodile was first seen by local farm villagers killing a water buffalo (carabao) last month and was also suspected of having attacked a fisherman who went missing in July, according to reports.

After they spotted the giant reptile, villagers and members of the crocodile farm staff set four traps, which the giant crocodile destroyed. They then used sturdier traps using steel cables, one of which finally caught the giant crocodile late Saturday.

What is the point of muscling up for sprinting.....I understand it has something to do with having more power for your ‘drive phase’ or whatever
Yet some of the guys on the starting look like they should be in the powerlifting event instead of sprints

I cyah recall Bailey, Ato, M.Johnson etc lookin like dey does eat a whole peacock just before the race

Plus I have yet to see a seriously ‘pumped’ sprinter win consistenly....it hada youth man from the UK In the finals (I eh ketch he name good) at the finals this week de man swell up like ah full macajuel with a bee sting allergy and he still get he ass wash

Isnt being too muscled counter productive in the 100 m?

Willy T. Ribbs Will Make Racing Comeback at 56

Just the Facts:
•Willy T. Ribbs, the first black driver to compete in the Indianapolis 500, is returning to racing.
•Ribbs will race in a preliminary event to the IndyCar race scheduled next month in Baltimore.
•Ribbs, 56, will drive an entry in the Firestone Indy Lights series.

INDIANAPOLIS — Willy T. Ribbs, the black driver who made history by qualifying for the 1991 Indianapolis 500 starting field, announced Wednesday that he will return to racing next month on a street course in Baltimore.

Ribbs, 56 and largely inactive as a race driver for the past 10 years, will compete in the Firestone Indy Lights Series preliminary to the Izod IndyCar Series event on September 4. The car will be prepared by the team he launched in May, Willy T. Ribbs Racing, which has fielded entries on a limited schedule for driver Chase Austin.

Ribbs will drive at Baltimore in place of Austin.

"It's kind of like coming back to (Class) AA baseball after being out of the major leagues for a while," Ribbs said. "I'll have to bring my walker to get it on with those kids, and they're all kids since none of them were born when I raced."

Ribbs last raced in a major event in 1999 in an IndyCar race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He was involved in an early crash and finished last in a 26-car field.

In competition between 1990 and 1999, Ribbs posted 11 top-10 finishes, the best of them a 6th-place run at Denver in a Derrick Walker-owned car.

In his first start at Indy in 1991, Ribbs — who failed to qualify for the 500 in 1990 — suffered a blown engine and finished 32nd in the 33-car field. He finished 21st in the 1993 edition of the 500.

Ribbs went to Europe to compete in the Formula Ford series in 1975. Later he raced in NASCAR, getting a top finish of 22nd in a race at North Wilksboro (North Carolina) Speedway. He fared much better in sports cars, winning five Trans-Am events.

Inside Line says: Born in 1955 in San Jose, California, Ribbs has fallen short of glory, but has some career achievements to his credit as well.

Duchess signs away chunks of fortune to marry at 85

OOPS sorry...my mistake here is her actual picture

The Associated Press

MADRID, Spain — It's the stuff of a soap opera starring European nobles: at age 85, one of Spain's richest and most title-laden women wants to wed a civil servant young enough to be her son. To placate her six wary children, she's signed over to them palatial chunks of her wealth.

She's a distant relative of Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill and you have to take a deep breath just to pronounce her name: Maria del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva.

The twice-married matriarch's supreme title is Duchess of Alba, but she has more than 40 others. Her 60-year-old beau is a man named Alfonso Diez, who works for the Spanish social security administration.

They first met decades ago because her then husband -- No. 2 -- was friends with Diez's brother, an antiques dealer, and after running into each at a movie theatre about three years ago the duchess and Diez eventually started dating.

The Duchess of Alba said in a rare radio interview early this year that she wanted to marry Diez but her children -- five men and a woman -- were against it. She denied any suggestion Diez was a gold-digger.

"Alfonso does not want anything. He has renounced everything," she told COPE radio. "All he wants is me."

Last month the duchess and her children went to a notary in Madrid and she registered them to be owners of palaces, castles and other property around Spain upon her death, according to widespread Spanish press reports. For now, though, she will retain control of the fortune of the more than 500-year-old House of Alba.

A representative for the duchess, Lola Morali, declined to comment, saying in an email Wednesday that she and the duchess were on vacation until September.

The early divvying up of most of the vast family pie appears to have appeased her children at least somewhat.

Her youngest son, Cayetano Martinez de Irujo, age 48, said last week of his mother's desire to marry Diez: "We have found the solution for her to be able to do it."

He said he and his siblings remained unenthused, however, about the idea of nuptials.

"I absolutely accept their relationship, if it is what they say it is," Martinez de Irujo said, but insisted they should not wed.

"If in the end my mother decides to get married, we will attend even though we still do not agree," Martinez de Irujo told the newspaper El Mundo.

Another newspaper, El Pais, said estimates of the duchess' wealth -- it includes paintings by Goya and Velazquez and a first edition copy of Cervantes' "Don Quixote" -- range widely from $856 million to $5 billion.

But her fortune is hard to calculate. Partly it's because some of it is in stocks -- by nature volatile, especially these days. And the art masterpieces, classified as Spanish national heritage by the government, cannot be removed from the country and thus would be less pricey if auctioned, according to Jose Luis Sampredro, a historian who has written a book on the House of Alba.

What's more, the duchess possesses things like historical documents that are simply priceless, Sampredro said in an interview.

"Who can say how much a letter from Christopher Columbus is worth, and she has several," he said.

Woman, 22, grows full-sized nipple on the sole of her FOOT
By Fiona Roberts
Lily Allen proudly showed hers off on television, Mark Wahlberg's famous for his and just last week, Zac Efron was forced to deny he has two.
But a 22-year-old woman has trumped them all - by growing a full-sized extra nipple on the sole of her foot.
Although one in 50 women and one in 100 men have extra nipples, according to the California-based Dermatology Journal it's the first time one has ever been discovered so far down somebody's body.

The woman told doctors she had had the unusual growth - which is almost two inches wide - all her life, and it had never caused her any pain.
Between one and five per cent of the population have the condition, known as supernumerary breast tissue.

Although most of the time extra nipples are found along the milk lines, which run from the genitals to the armpits, they have been discovered on the back, thigh or even the face - but never the feet.
Mark Wahlberg has a third nipple just below his left one. The former Calvin Klein model considered having it removed but then changed his mind, calling it his most 'prized possession'.

Last week dermatologist Dr Katherine Rothman said she believed Zac Efron had not one but two extra nipples, below his normal ones on his chest.

His spokesman denied the claims, but it prompted new interest in the topic - and the rediscovery of the 22-year-old woman's case, which was first published in Dermatology Journal in 2006.
According to researchers in Brazil: 'A 22-year-old woman sought medical care for a lesion in the plantar region of her left foot, a well-formed nipple surrounded by areola and hair.

'Microscopic examination of the dermis showed hair follicles, eccrine glands, and sebaceous glands.'
There are eight categories of supernumerary nipple. They range from polythelia pilosa, which is just a patch of hair, and develop up to a complete nipple with glandular tissue and areola.
Researchers classified this case as stage five, which means it has a nipple and areola but no fat tissue.

Third nipples have been mentioned throughout history and folklore, and were once known as 'witch's nipples'.
Anne Boleyn, one of Henry VIII's wives, was rumoured to have not only a third nipple but also a third breast - causing some to brand her a witch.

U.S. Senate Proposes Prison Time for Illegally Streaming Movies, TV

Sharing sports games with your friends? You're going to prison for 5 years!

Some accuse the United States federal government of being bought and paid for by the entertainment industry when it comes to copyright law.  Indeed, when Barack Obama was elected president he initially promised to look into copyright reform, but since has focused his efforts almost exclusively on copyright enforcement.  Copyright enforcement is a rare bipartisan-supported issue in Washington D.C. -- arguably because parties such as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and their respective member corporations make a point of donating millions to members of both parties.

Given that, the U.S. Senate’s plans to criminalize online streaming of television programming or movies does not particularly surprise.  Dubbed "The Commercial Felony Streaming Act" (S. 978), the bipartisan bill was introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas).

The bill would aims to "reconcile a disparity" between the current law regarding stream of content with that regarding peer-to-peer (P2P) filesharing.  The bill's proposed way to "reconcile" that disparity is to send Americans to prison -- if you're caught streaming 10 times within 180 days, you can be convicted of a felony and sentenced to up to 5 years in prison.

In order for videos to qualify as strikes against an individual, the infringed work must have a retail value of the streamed video that exceeds $2,500, or a license worth more than $5,000.  To qualify the streaming must also be done for "personal financial gain" -- an ambiguous phrasing.

The MPAA claims that it will only target website owners who "willfully and knowingly violated a copyright and profited from it." The organization says it will not look to prosecute those who "stream videos without intending to profit" will not be subject to prosecution.

However, the organization or other copyright enforcement groups could eventually use the measure to try to prosecute viewers and owners of non-profitable sites as well, as they could argue that individuals see a "personal financial gain" from not purchasing work legally.

The bill is firmly supported by the Obama administration.  The White House Office of U.S. Intellectual Property Enforcement urged Congress two months ago to send Americans who stream to prison.

The effort is also being pushed by the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), AFTRA, Directors Guild of America, IATSE, SAG, the MPAA, the Independent Film & Television Alliance, and the National Association of Theatre Owners.

Michael O’Leary, Executive Vice President, Government Affairs for the MPAA lauds, "This bill will help ensure that the punishment for these site operators fits the crime."

And IFTA President Jean Prewitt adds, "The illegal streaming of motion pictures and television programming is as financially devastating for our industry as is illegal downloading. Stealing is stealing, regardless of the means in which the product is being received."

The bill was approved on Thursday by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and now moves to the full Senate for consideration.

Some states have recently been pushing to make sharing your Netflix password a misdemeanor offense that carries jail time.  Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) is the world's largest legal vendor of streaming movies.  The bills contain no exemptions for sharing passwords with your family members or roommates.

At just under 24 inches tall, the Philippines' 18-year-old Junrey Balawing is the world's shortest man, according to Guinness World Records.
By Melissa Dahl

Weighing 11 pounds and standing just under 2 feet tall, Junrey Balawing is a tiny teenager who, as the TODAY anchors note in the video above, looks more than a little like a toddler.

But he has this going for him: The 18-year-old Filipino man was recently named the world's shortest man by Guinness World Records. At 23.6 inches tall, he just barely misses the record for the shortest man in history -- that title is still held by Gul Mohammed of India, who was 22.5 inches tall and died in 1997.

Balawing displaces the world's former shortest man, Khagendra Thapa Magar, who is 26.4 inches tall.

The teenager lives with his family in Sindangan, Philippines. His father, Reynaldo, tells Guinness World Records that when the teenager was born, the family's luck turned around: They'd been living in poverty, but after Junrey's birth, Reynaldo was able to find a job that provided for his wife, his small son and the three siblings that came along next.

"Junrey is our lucky charm," says his father.

Queen decorates Nepali for Afghanistan heroics

LONDON (AFP) – A Nepalese soldier in the British army has been given a top bravery award by Queen Elizabeth II for his heroics in Afghanistan, where he single-handedly saw off more than 30 Taliban fighters.

Corporal Dipprasad Pun, 31, said he thought he was going to die and so had nothing to lose in taking on the attackers who overran his checkpoint.

He was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC), which is given in recognition of acts of conspicuous gallantry during active operations against the enemy.

Pun fired more than 400 rounds, launched 17 grenades and detonated a mine to repel the Taliban assault on his checkpoint near Babaji in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan, last September.

Surrounded, the enemy opened fired from all sides and for 15 minutes Pun remained under continuous attack, including from rocket-propelled grenades and AK47 guns.

At one point, unable to shoot, he used his machine gun tripod to knock down a militant who was climbing the walls of the compound.

Two insurgents were still attacking by the time he ran out of ammunition, but he set off a Claymore mine to repel them.

Pun was given his medal in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London on Wednesday.

The CGC is second only to the Victoria Cross -- the highest honour for bravery in the face of the enemy.

"There wasn't any choice but to fight. The Taliban were all around the checkpoint. I was alone," he said.

"I had so many of them around me that I thought I was definitely going to die so I thought I'd kill as many of them as I could before they killed me.

"After that I thought nobody can kill us now -- when we met the enemy I wasn't scared."

Britain's Major General Nicholas Carter, who was commander of allied forces in southern Afghanistan during Pun's deployment, praised his efforts.

"The CGC does not get handed out lightly. It was a most remarkable achievement," he said.

Former NHL Enforcer Donald Brashear Readies for MMA Debut

During an 18-year career in the National Hockey League, Donald Brashear earned a reputation as one of the sport’s top enforcers due to his willingness to rip off his gloves and throw down. Now, though, he is getting to strap on some gloves and change his fighting arena from a rink to a cage when he makes his mixed martial arts debut at Ringside MMA 11 on June 4.

The 39-year-old will face an opponent yet to be determined in his adopted hometown of Quebec City, Quebec, and his first prizefight will come on very short notice. During a recent edition of The MMA Hour, Brashear said that he decided to take the fight after being approached by the event’s promoter just around one month ago, and with no previous MMA experience. If that sounds like a rash decision, Brashear can’t exactly argue.

“The most I know is from the people I see fighting,” he said. “The only knowledge of fighting I have is boxing and playing in the NHL, so I’ve got a lot of stuff to learn.”

 - Guys, want to look sexy and get the girl? Don't smile too much. Look brooding or show a bit of shame instead. Women, ignore that advice.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/25/us-smiles-sex-idUSTRE74O5ZT20110525
Bitter mus be does get real gyirls ;)

Women find happy men less sexually attractive than those with expressions that show pride or hint that they have done wrong and know it, according to Canadian researchers.

The study published online Tuesday in the American Psychological Association journal Emotion showed pictures of the opposite sex to both men and women. Participants were then asked for their initial reactions on sexual attractiveness based the expressions they saw.

"Men who smile were considered fairly unattractive by women," said Jessica Tracy, a University of British Columbia psychology professor who directed the study.

"So to the extent that men think that smiling is a good thing to do if they want to be found sexually attractive our findings suggest that's not the case," Tracy said.

The men's reaction was just the opposite.

"Women who smile are absolutely very attractive. That was by far the most attractive expression women showed," Tracy said in an interview.

The researchers admit they are not sure why men and women reacted differently to smiles. In a man, a big smile may make him appear too feminine or more desperate for sex.

The study also adds fuel to the notion that women are attracted to bad boys.

"Women are attracted to guys like James Dean, Edward the vampire. The guys who are flawed, but who know it and are tortured by it," Tracy said.

A slightly downcast expression of shame is an appeasement gesture that hints at a need for sympathy.

Men also found sexual attractiveness in women whose expressions and body language hinted at shame.

The researchers stressed they looked only at initial reactions of sexual attractiveness, and were not recommending men adopt a no-smile policy for a long-term relationship.

"When people want a long-term relationship they take much more into account than sexual attractiveness. How nice a person is, is a big thing," Tracy said.

"So we're not saying, don't be a nice guy," she said.

Chinese farmers plagued by exploding watermelons

Farmers in China have been baffled by a rather peculiar problem: exploding watermelons.

China Central Television (CCT) blames the phenomenon on the overuse of a chemical designed to make fruit grow faster, claiming famers were overspraying crops to get ahead of competitors.
Then again, agricultural experts are seemingly unable to explain why chemical-free melons were also exploding, as they point to weather and abnormal size as the main cause.

According to Xinhua news agency, 20 famers in a village in Jiangsu province imported watermelon seeds from Japan - 10 of whom eventually watched their crop explode.

Interestingly enough, only one out of the ten had treated his exploding watermelons with the growth chemical.

To be sure, over two-thirds (180) of farmer Liu Mingsuo’s crops fell victim to mass explosions after he used chemicals to boost their growth.

Agricultural experts are left somewhat baffled by the cause, as the chemical has not officially been linked to the explosions.

Could it be absorption of the chemical in awater source? Or perhaps in the air? Or just some environmental fluke?

Unsurprisingly, China has approved the usage of the growth chemical under certain quotas. So far, tests show the chemical is safe.

Still, if this doesn’t help people move towards organic living, I really don’t know what will.

Man beheads woman in Spanish island supermarket

The suspect, a homeless Bulgarian man with a police record identified as Deyan Valentinov, was captured by security guards after he ran out of the supermarket holding the head, authorities said. The man was then arrested.

In London, Britain's Foreign Office confirmed the victim was a U.K. national, saying "we are now seeking further information."

Regional Interior Ministry delegate Dominica Fernandez said the suspect is believed to have entered the shop, stolen a knife which he then used to assault the woman, whose identity hasn't been released.

Fernandez told journalists the attack appeared to be random and that the man was well known in the area. It took place shortly after 10 a.m. (0900 GMT, 5 a.m. EDT) in the southern town of Arona, about 10 miles (15 kilometres) north of the beach resort of Los Cristianos.

Regional newspaper La Opinion reported the suspect had received treatment at the psychiatric unit of a local hospital in February after being involved in previous violent incidents.
