Step back in time ... 2003 - Cobblers sack Terry Fenwick... after 49 days in charge.

From what I've read, it was more about the chaos in the boardroom than anything Fenwick did. He took over a team that was in total chaos and the change in management almost always means new management will clean house. Having said that, Fenwick's personality does not always bode well for congeniality and compromise. Let's see what he makes of this opportunity. I am willing to give him a honeymoon through the Gold Cup 2021.

The privilege of coaching at the Gold Cup should bear some correlation to the product delivered in the preceding WC qualifying matches. That stated, in principle, I agree with your view.

Incidentally, just so everyone is clear, I would not have posted that article but for its recent publication (February 26, 2021). The best thing for all involved is for Fenwick to settle into the job without a perpetual sense of agitation. However, to earn a long cycle there must be a demonstration of process that matches the competitive challenge. The balance sheet is tenuous at the moment.

I couldn't agree with you more but for one caveat. We continue to change and fire coaches at an enormous cost. Unfortunately, we are not financially endowed like some NCAA colleges and Professional teams with seemingly unlimited coffers.  Where will we find the money to pay off Hart, Lawrence, and all the unpaid assistant coaches and unpaid player match fees. We are in a deeper financial hole of doodoo if this doesn't work out.

“The cost was $13 million for all four."

13 million for 4 stadium. That was then. Not now.

"It was not built by the Government, it was built by a consortium of companies – Royal Bank, Guardian (Group of Companies) and Mutual (Life). They got together and financed the project. They built the stadia and then they leased it to us under the BOLT (Build Own Lease Transfer) arrangement. This is interesting.

Yeah right ..... with Jack there?

ex-national youth forward Nkosi Blackman,

Played against this dude in Brooklyn about 10 years ago. He was a handful. He has a good striker's built.
“The Government has the mandate for maintaining the four stadia,” Camacho said. “I know, of the four, the Ato Boldon is the one that’s been most actively maintained because that it is considered to be the ‘office for football’. In the case of the Dwight Yorke, because of where it is physically sited, it’s close to the Atlantic so it gets that prevailing breeze with salt etcetera. They had to do major refurbishment.

So, we didn't have to build them. All we had to do was take care of them and we couldn't do that! Maintenance is always less costly than rebuilding.

TTFA still uncertain over warm-ups, departure.
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday).

...
Mohammed was also unclear if the T&T team will take up the offer from Terminix La Horquetta Rangers’ owner Richard Ferguson, to play a $100,000 winners-take-all friendly match.

“I can’t say at this point in time,” Mohammed mentioned.

There should NOT at this juncture be any lack of clarity regarding this matter - either from the perspective of logistical considerations or from the vantage point of institutional values.

After all that the TTFA has experienced prior to the NC, under a normalization committee, the TTFA ought to be projecting its public face of being a serious entity that does not equivocate on matters regarding institutional values. It should not be pirouetting or vacillating among internal/external stakeholders. This is NOT a hard call.
I think that we will have a decision by March 24. That's the Trini way. Then we blame Airlines, the passport office, the fans and everyone else we could find.

Dreams hopes fantasies and desires- then there is reality. From the inception of a WC, every football nation has yearned for this Holy Grail. Every minnow to giants among nation believe that they have what it takes. However, the fact remains that i reality there are predictable nations who will  come close and those who will go through a formality of qualifying only to shatter the hearts of a nation.

What is the possibility of TnT ever even coming close to a quarter final play? We can't even with any conviction lay claim to be a regional dominant force or a giant among CONCACF!

This farcical attempt every  four years to build some hope is quickly becoming a nightmare  of a dream - an illusion of sorts - The entire fabric of a WC is in many ways a highly organized- ooops orchestrated event with back door bidding wars- alleged payoffs for hostings  and money being allegedly laundered among different levels of executives and governing bodies - all under the guise of FIFA- "Foreign Investors For All"

It is rather a grand delusion that invites and supports those who play the odds and cheer for the u derdog hoping against all that the perennial favourites or top five nations will suffer a humiliating defeat. Given the overall structure and inequities of funding, player talent, resources and opportunities, the advent of a Caribbean nation ever appearing  in a final two is at the best a football mirage.
The farcical show and fracas of qualifying  standards and Playoffs is once more evident to keep minnows at bay and  reserve the rite of passage to the WC to nations of privilege - Depraved nations are left to seek desperate measures to attempt to equal the playing field- the recent announcement by Jamaica to immerse their team with foreign nationals who because of lineage is good enough to represent- YnT is no different- we put our hopes that those from far away lands will bring us a prepriev for our football local debacle.
These actions once more support the giants and further constrict the growth development opportunities and hope of local football.
Our association pays a coack20k US to coach a national team and then the ultimate betrayal occurs when the team is not good enough- recruits are brought in- there is something fundamentally flawed in how this occurs every  four year cycle?

Could the TTFA  take the money spent on coaching select top players send then abroad for playing and development and let them be the core of the national team- each year local players who earn a qualifying standard will be sponsored by TTFA to earn an opportunity to a foreign contract. This is fully disclosed and understood-  the illusion of trying to home grow talent  pay a coach ridiculous amount to break an illusionary spell  can be averted.

The drunken and hypnotic madness that we can rise among the ranks in this decade seems to be just that- with the present state of foot ball intnis nation our dose of reality lies in finding some semblance of glory if we could win a fete match against the li,es of Anguilla- a country on the brink of starting their own illusion of  some day parading on the WC stage.

Let's inoculate against the illusion - watch the WC on our television sets and relishintne thought that there maybe better hope for us if we United as improvise Caribbean nations and have a regional team- like cricket
to have any consistent regional representation at a WC
.

Hope! But it will never likely happen! It is far too late. But there are two possibilities:
1. The organizational structure of FIFA will have to be changed to allow groups of countries to become one participating entity rather than individual nations.
2. The Caribbean nations will have to become politically united into one Federated State (Federation. We know what happened to that.
The football egos are likely to resist both those possibilities. What we need is professional Caribbean league that allows players to participate in a higher brand of football, that attract some foreign talent to push our players to compete for their places in a competitive professional environment, and attracts foreign scouts to provide better opportunities for the better players in the league

Rangers promises to release players for T&T team.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

T&T Pro League campaigners La Horquetta Rangers is re-confirming its commitment to assisting the T&T team ahead of the World Cup qualifying play-offs, by making its players available, but only after the team competes in a high-stake tournament that starts next month.

The club's owner Richard Ferguson is challenging national coach Terry Fenwick and his men, to a $100, 000-winner-takes all match, and he said he is prepared to up the stakes by an additional $100, 000 if permission is given for spectators to be allowed to enter the playing venue.

That match, it is understood could take place early next week, but Ferguson, in a move to convey his commitment to the country, sought to clear the air on his reasons for not allowing his players to train with the national team, via a letter to the National Team Director Richard Piper yesterday.

In his letter, he said: "We take this opportunity to thank you for considering our players in regards to training with the national team coach, however, after discussions with the club's Board of Directors and coaching staff, it was decided that it was not prudent to release the requested players at his juncture. Please consider the following reasons: (1) We expect to be playing in a league in April with significant prize money and it is very important that we prepare for this league vigorously.

Therefore, we need to have full access to all of our players to compete effectively. (2) Our coaches have developed an extensive training, nutrition and fitness programme for our players for the upcoming competition, and as a result, the absence of key players for such a long time would affect the plans of the club adversely. In addition, our players have been training together for over two years and they are very fit."

Ferguson and Fenwick have been at loggerheads over Rangers reluctance to release its players outside of the FIFA window.

However, with no football taking place for the past year or so, Ferguson has been the subject of much criticism for his stance, while Fenwick's unit remains in dire need of reinforcement.

Rangers, in its letter also pointed out that his team possesses many talents that will be an asset to the country. "However, we stand ready to assist the national senior team with their preparations for the upcoming international competitions. We suggest that we play the national team a practice game where coach Fenwick can see the team in action, and he can then select the players he wishes to play for T&T."

"You should also note that we have expanded our squad over the last 10 months, and we currently have players that coach Fenwick has never seen before and they would be an excellent option for the national team coach to consider."

The T&T team is preparing for its Concacaf World Cup qualifying match against Guyana on March 25 in the Dominican Republic. So far, the team has played an international friendly against the USA and lost 7-0 and last Saturday recorded an 8-0 victory against Orange XI of Tobago.

#Bally

A few weeks before the qualifier, the  owner agrees to release his players. His ego-driven rationale makes no sense.

The Rangers offer follows a protracted stand-off between both camps, as Ferguson has consistently refused to release his players to the national team outside of the mandatory Fifa international match window.
This is the idiocy of Trinidad and Tobago football.  With no functional league and no football being played, what international window is Ferguson protecting. There is no way forward if these ego-driven, inept coaches continue to believe that they have some national valiue.

I am supportive of Fenwick on this issue. The government is sabotaging the TTFA in an act of it's normal tortoise-like decision making process. If we could host a three week CPL tournament in a bubble there is no reason we cannot host three teams in a football tournament. This is plain and simply shameful.

Football is a team sport. And as much as I had hoped for a better game, meaning a narrow loss, we have to be realistic.
1. Fenwick saw several of these guys for the first time on Friday morning.
2. Several of the guys never saw their teammates before Friday morning much less play with them
3. Watching film and talking through strategy is useless without time putting it into practice.
4. The USMNT has been in training in Florida for weeks and many are on the verge of breaking into the first team.
5. None of the members of the TTMNT play at the top level of US Soccer.

From my observation, several of the players in this game will not put on a shirt for TT when other players join the team. Molino, Garcia, Jones (Joevin), hopefully Frenderup, and several others, now overseas, are likely to be in the game against Guyana and in future qualifiers.
Fenwick was right to accept the game as playing pickup games is no way to determine the quality of your team. We will see who are the resilient ones, who uses this beating as a stimulus to work and get better. The weak minded don't deserve to play irrespective of their individual skill.
Give Fenwick some time. He needs it.

There you guys go again calling for players who didn’t make the cut. maybe the coach wants to see who could cut it at this level against a top team in the confederation. who knows maybe he already seen gomez and hodges play against top competition at this level and didn’t see the need to include them in this exercise, but one thing’s for sure coach fenwick ain’t no dummy coach like dennis the menace. he will weed them out quick and in a hurry.

Agreed. Building a team in these circumstances involves factors other than who can play. This is also why coaches answer questions at media conferences to explain what they are at liberty to explain and the media ask thoughtful questions.

The questions to be asked are not difficult.

We also have our individual opinions but I am a fan who played some football but I am not a coach, and as most people on this forum, never coached a team. I will trust Fenwick whether I like his picks or not and support my Warriors against all comers.

How the Kevin Molino signing takes Columbus Crew SC to another level | Extratime
January 9, 2021 3:14PM EST
Ari Liljenwall Contributor

Columbus Crew SC are still basking in their MLS Cup victory, but as they look ahead to the 2021 season, general manager Tim Bezbatchenko hasn't been resting on his laurels.

On the contrary, the Crew have made a couple of the more notable moves of the offseason, first with the signing of legendary striker Bradley Wright-Phillips, then the news that they had signed former Minnesota United standout Kevin Molino. It makes the Crew that much more dangerous as they eye their title defense, with the Extratime crew digging into the implications of the moves on the latest episode.

Regarding the significance of Molino's arrival, host Matt Doyle said he expects the veteran to slide in as the starter immediately, even with the talent Columbus already has on the wing.

"If he’s healthy and he’s playing anything like he did last year during the stretch run and into the playoffs, then he’s the starter," Doyle said. "No disrespect to Derrick Etienne or [Pedro] Santos or Luis Diaz, all of whom have proven to be really good players for winning teams. Kevin Molino’s better than any of them, but this gives Caleb Porter now the flexibility to rotate, to keep guys fresh, to be sort of matchup dependent. You could also slide either Santos or Molino inside a little bit, play as a No. 10 directly next to [Lucas] Zelarayan – different style No. 10, obviously, but you play a little bit more counterattacking, a little bit more linear with those two guys.

"It’s a great signing for Columbus and I just want to point out, they got BWP, who was the league leader in goal and assists per 90 during the regular season. And they got Molino, who I believe was second overall in goals and assists per 90 during the postseason. That’s a really, really good offseason from Tim Bezbatchenko and Caleb Porter."

It's certainly some crafty work from Bezbatchenko, who has established himself as one of the league's top executives during his time with Columbus and Toronto FC. Doyle said that in his mind, Bezbatchenko and Seattle Sounders GM Garth Lagerwey seem to be in their own league when it comes to knowing how to build an MLS roster that can take you deep into the playoffs.

"I kind of tossed this out maybe six months ago, like, what would you trade for Garth Lagerwey? What would you trade for Tim Bezbatchenko?" Doyle said. "Because these two guys have their teams going deep into the playoffs every single year. They’re able to refresh their rosters, they’re able to get guys like Zelarayan or like [Nicolas] Lodeiro, but then they’re also able to go further down the budget list and add guys like a Kevin Molino or like a Joao Paulo.

"So this has been just a masterclass of an 18 months from Tim Bezbatchenko, it’s an MLS Cup-winning roster that has only just gotten better, which is spectacular if you’re a Crew fan. And it’s absolutely what they deserve as a fanbase given what they did in 2017 and 2018."

Describing the verdict of Judge Gobin is not, in my opinion, a jeer of the TTFA or a criticism of the Judge's decision but a realistic description of where we are. Judge Gobin has made a decision based on law. Unfortunately, the deep corruption of FIFA and its desire to manipulate and control it's member associations, even at the risk of violating the sovereignty of independent countries is the deeper problem. Is playing football more important than legal independence and national sovereignty? Only will determine what price we are willing to pay. A pyrrhic victory indeed. To use local saying, this victory by Wallace may be "sweet in the belly but sour in the bambam!

50
We had years of three former corrupt and/or disorganized football administrations. For the first time in decades, a president sets a plan in place to eliminate the debt and erase the scandalous activities of the past and now is the time FIFA attempts to act.

“The mission found that extremely low overall financial management methods, combined with a massive debt, have resulted in the TTFA facing a very real risk of insolvency and illiquidity."

But they put the finance manager who oversaw that situation back in charge. If that is not a questionable corrupt decision, I don't know what is! This TTFA is a legally, constitutionally elected organization. There was no election fraud or current proven financial fraud. At least, FIFA has not provided any evidence of that. How could FIFA after only three months and with the hope provided by this President suddenly decide to remove the President and disband the organization? Where were they all these years? As someone earlier said, this is a blatant coup d'etat and another demonstration of the corrupt, immoral organization that FIFA is. Is there a forum where we fans can raise our voices? Let's support Wallace's return to office if he has to be voted a second time.

Words are just words unless they apply to something. If he used the words to refer to or name the team, then he has a case. If I use those same words to refer to a type of paint, he has no rights. But it is no value to him unless the team uses it, so a profit share arrangement benefits both parties.

Its sad to see a country like Trinidad that has a Latin culture always hiring a bunch of English coach's I guess they will never get it right.
We love it; like to see it; follow it. But we have rarely had the skilled players to play a Latin American brand of football. That is the illusion.

I wonder if anyone has stopped to notice that Latin American teams in concacaf struggle against us and jamaica? the only Latin team in concacaf who runs rings over us is honduras, and that’s because they have big strong tall players like us who match us with speed and physicality.

Like you forget about Costa Rica?
we struggle with Costa Rica the same as we struggle with mexico and El Salvador, but these teams don’t demolish us like honduras. for some reason honduras has our number and we match up poorly against them.

Actually, we have a worse record against Costa Rica
i know mate but that’s not where i was going with this comment. allow me to explain. my original point was that our european style of play particularly us and the jamaicans for some reason seem to confound the mexicans. they struggle tremendously when they play us and have to pull out all their stops, but it’s not so when they face the central americans whom they tend to steam roll on most occasions.

I made this comment to dispel the notion that we play a Latin brand which IMO is a fallacy, and I used honduras as a measuring stick to say that in fact the only other Latin team that play a semi euro style that matches up very good against us is honduras, we seem to somehow struggle with them and they seem to always out play us out right.

in the last 4 games we played them they had the bulk of the possession shots on goal corners you name it, in fact in our last two nations cup games if we had five corners kicks in the both games that would have been a lot. it’s not that mexico and costa rica are not better teams or have a better record against us than the hondurans, but for some reason when we meet, they out play us out right because of their style of play.

The truth is, we love the Latin brand. We are Brazil and Argentina fans, the dribbling and skills and individual play. But we do rarely have the players with those skills. To be successful, we must play with what we have and don't try to be what we are not. We therefore need to find the coach who uses our skills most efficiently. Is it any wonder that Beenhaker was able to mold our time so quickly and take us to the World Cup where many South American coaches have not? JMHO

Can we just all admit that the  primary reason for the demise of Trinidad and Tobago football is the poor administration at a national level? And by that I mean at every level of our society. Most organizational structures private and public. An earlier post said it best. We live in a society where we expect everything must be given to us. There is a lot of blame to go around. So here are my thoughts:
1. The TTFA administration has some good ideas (I like the Home of Football concept) but you cannot lead by arrogance.
2. No functional football league. How do we expect to have players perform without a league? (Denis is right about that)
3. I like Denis Lawrence but the nail is in the coffin. Football is a results-oriented business and he has failed.
4. No developmental structure. It will be another generation before we can make an impact on CFU football, much less CONCACAF.
I can go on and on, but I have more important things to do.

I think is time to move these tournament from the US. The visa requirements are srewing up the rest of Concacaf. Our officials are guilty of some incompetence, but the visas requirement are weakening the already weak smaller countries.

I never understood FIFA allowing countries who deny players visa to host events.

It almost appears to be a deliberate attempt to weaken the competition, but that may just be conspiracy theory.
But it is a burden too heavy for already challenged countries.

58
Sando, ah know you is the forum track man, I wonder what you think of the performance. To me it is disappointing. One bronze. Congrats to Horsford. We should be thankful, though. Our youths had it tough for the past 3 days. I was very, very glad to see that we had a women 4x400 team in the meet. Will they meet the times for Tokyo is debatable. I wish they could, but  very doubtful.  On the U-15 football thread there is a photo where all the teams posing on a delapidated running track, I think Asylum said that was disgraceful. I agree. How are we going to produce winners on facilities like that. We have 5 stadiums(stadia) with running track and we could not produce one track medal at the meet. But I commend all the participants. This is just the stepping stone. Work hard. Seek advice on the right nutrition and conditioning. Good luck. Blessings.

Just the same ole same ole with T&T track and field. No difference from lets say '10 years ago'. yes we continue to say this is just the stepping stone youth, work hard and you will get better. In the end its just talk. yes facilities need to be maintained but there is a lot more to be done.

The culture of track and sports need to change. We often ask why we don't have more medal winners at the senior level at major global championships? the answer is so simple but the dinosaur heads in T&T seem to still not grasp it... success do not happen overnight, its starts at teh youth level, stop wishing for overnight suceess!  we need better coaching, you cant just depend on american scholarships for athletes to develop abroad, and  sorry to say but we do not have local coaches who can fully develop our young athletes to reach their full potential. Instead we need qualified foreign coaches to lead and our coaches can learn from them.

But how do you tell all of this to these old men who think they know it all? Our athletes need better nutrition, need more financial investment, need more local competitive meets during the season.  The netire culture need to change and what is even more sad is our sports media seem not to care or just dont know better because they should be pressing these issues to the sporting authorities and making the public more aware of what needs to be done. Instead they seem to just be happy with the outcome of winning one or two bronze medals every championship for the last twenty years.
No matter how much you say it and no matter the repeated poor results, whether it is football, track and field, cricket, you name it, the know-it-all s who run our sports continue to create more and more embarrassing scenarios for our youth.

So, these are the same players that knocked the US out of the World Cup and the same coach. The same coach and players that played Mexico tough in Mexico a couple years ago. So is it the players? Is it the coach? If you look at all our sports, there is a lack of consistency that permeates many of our players attitudes. Today hot, tomorrow cold. Hart led our players to a successful Gold Cup a few years ago with two unforgettable performances against Panama and Mexico. Soon after, we couldn't beat Martinique, with mostly the same players. Of course, there are a few exceptions, but in general, we as a people need to demonstrate a lot more professionalism and get rid of the laissez-faire attitude that continues to dog us. Till then, the losses will pile up and make us fans continue the suffering.
