Zeppo, surprise surprise  ... your authority on Alvarez was spot on.

However, as far as the work rate ... the Salvadorans seemed comfortable constructing a game plan around him, and he looked very comfortable with that idea. I guess he offered them a dimension the US doesn't need.

By the way, in the post-Maradona era, isn't it blasphemous to criticize a player for being "all left foot"?

*In my view, Birchall - in his present manifestation - is most effective when he wins the ball, slows the attack or forces the attacking player to drop a few yards and reset the build-up of play ... rather than with the ball at his feet seeking penetration. His performance is less compelling when he possesses on the dribble going forward ... a critique I have not read as I've scanned the contributions.

IMV, ideally, he should win the ball when he is able to and opt to play the ball diagonally or vertically to assist our traditional attacking players in getting in behind or running at defences ... I've noticed this variant in his game more now at LA ... and, I don't think it works well for us, if not used selectively.

* Anyone notice our inability to possess the ball in the second half? Horrendous.

* Criticisms of Radanfah Abu Bakr exclusively, IMV are a bit much ... did he make mistakes? certainly ... yet none were fatal. How did he acquit himself relative to say ... Makan Hislop? The defence is far from being a cohesive unit. Proper assessment of Bakr ought to consider that.

* But for the good fortune of Ince's positioning and instinct, let me suggest Latapy's substitution decisions may have been exposed completely. I think they were well-intentioned, somewhat influenced by circumstances (such as injury), but flew in the face of identifying where the game had matured to by the time of Yorke's introduction with roughly 23 minutes of playing time left.

I am unconvinced that Dwight's introduction was a necessity!

* The concession of the middle third of the park (2nd half), and the apparent lack of recognition of how this aided El Salvador's posture should be examined. We could have offered some of the circumstances that have troubled El Salvador in their recent outings. This would have rested on midfield organization and some form of symmetry in attack.

* Finally, it was amateurish of us to expect the Salvadorans to return the ball to us when we kicked the ball out due to a player being injured ... the game being as delicately poised as it was ... recall the episode experienced by our female national representatives at the hands of Costa Rica last year when they paid for a similar lack of recognition?

* Oh, complaints about Williams' throws ... anyone pay attention to the instruction he received on the throws?

4 Wis. women accused of tying up, gluing married man at center of alleged lovers' quadrangle

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — A married man who planned to rendezvous with one of his handful of lovers at an eastern Wisconsin motel instead found himself bound, blindfolded and assaulted by a group of women out for revenge, according to court documents.

Four women, including his wife, eventually showed up to humiliate the man, who ended up with his penis glued to his stomach in a bizarre plot to punish him for a lover's quadrangle gone bad, according to the documents filed in Calumet County.

Now it's the women who face punishment,
perhaps six years in prison, and at least one said Monday the story has gotten twisted and she's embarrassed.

"I am disturbed. I am upset. I am having a hard time handling life; an emotional wreck," Wendy Sewell, 43, of Kaukauna, said in a telephone interview from her home. "I am ashamed."

Sewell, Therese Ziemann, 48, of Menasha, Michelle Belliveau, 43, of Neenah, and the man's wife are charged with being party to false imprisonment, a felony. Ziemann also is charged with fourth-degree sexual assault.

The women are free on $200 cash bails. Investigators say all the women but Belliveau were romantically involved with the man. Online court records didn't list defense attorneys for any of the women Monday.

The Associated Press is not naming the man's wife to protect his identity as an alleged victim of sexual assault.

The women's plot for revenge unfolded last Thursday at the Lakeview Motel about 30 miles southwest of Green Bay in the tiny village of Stockbridge near the scenic shores of Lake Winnebago.

Criminal complaints filed Friday allege the man agreed to be bound with "sheer sheets" and blindfolded with a pillowcase for a "rub down" by Ziemann. She instead cut off his underwear with a scissors and summoned the others to the room with a text message.

Ziemann struck the man in the face, and used Krazy Glue to attach his penis to his stomach when the other women arrived, according to the complaints. The man told investigators he also was threatened with a gun. Ziemann told investigators she didn't have a gun but may have told the victim, "Do you know how much I want to shoot you?"

He started screaming and the women rushed off fearful that he could get loose and hurt them but allegedly took his wallet, vehicle and cell phone.

Ziemann told investigators she met the man online through Craigslist, fell in love and paid for his use of a room at the motel for the past two months. She said she gave him about $3,000. Then last Wednesday, she learned from the man's wife that he was married, had other girlfriends and was "using them for money." She expected the money to be repaid, according to the documents.

During Thursday's confrontation with the man, Ziemann told investigators Sewell asked him, "Which one do you love more?" and the man's wife made a derisive remark about him being scared.

The man got free from the bed by chewing through one of his bindings, went outside and borrowed a telephone from the motel owner to call police.

Ziemann and Belliveau are sisters and Belliveau didn't do anything wrong, Sewell said Monday. "She was just there for moral support. She wasn't even dating the guy. She stood at the door the whole time and didn't participate or nothing." ::)

Ziemann's husband answered the telephone at their home and declined comment. There was no telephone listing for Belliveau.

The man had no telephone listing in Fond du Lac.

Had heard bout something similar involving a Caribbean nurse in the Big Apple ... cyah vouch fuh that but in Wisconsin ....

Cheater! Four Women Krazy Glue Penis

What happens when you cheat your wife? Well, ask Therese Ziemann who will get your husband and superglue his manhood to his stomach.

According to reports, Ziemann and the man's wife and a few girls he met off Craigslist got some revenge on him by tying him up in a motel and torturing him.

Now revenge is placed back on them as the police have arrested the women. The wife, Wendy Sewell, Michelle Belliveau, and Therese Ziemann are being charged with false imprisonment and the man's wife with sexual assault.

According to NBC Chicago, "Criminal complaints filed Friday allege the man agreed to be bound with "sheer sheets'' and blindfolded with a pillowcase for a "rub down'' by Ziemann.

She instead cut off his underwear with a scissors and summoned the others to the room with a text message. Ziemann struck the man in the face, and used Krazy Glue to attach his penis to his stomach when the other women arrived, according to the complaints."

The husband was also threatened with a gun although no gun was present. He was blindfolded so he could not see for sure.

The woman left after he started getting wild and took his wallet, cellphone, keys, and car. He got away by biting through the sheets.

Women stick together against cheating lover

A sticky case of revenge unfolded last week in a Wisconsin motel after a woman discovered her husband was cheating and invited three other scorned lovers to settle the score -- with Krazy Glue.

The 36-year-old Lothario was carrying on with all of them before his wife figured it out and notified the others, according to a criminal complaint filed in Calumet County, Wis., in a town about 90 miles north of Milwaukee.

"We had a plan," one of the women, Therese Ziemann, 48, told an investigator, according to court records.

Ziemann lured the man to a Stockbridge hotel Thursday, promising a "rub down," the complaint says. He was blindfolded and tied to a bed. Then Ziemann text-messaged the other three women, including the man's wife, who joined her in the room.

One of them, Wendy Sewell, 44, reportedly asked, "Which one do you love more?"

After the victim was threatened with mace, punched in the face and taunted, the mischief moved south.

Ziemann glued a sensitive body part to his stomach, according to the complaint.

The women, including Michelle Belliveau, fled when the man started yelling. All were later charged with false imprisonment. Ziemann also faces charges of fourth-degree sexual assault and misdemeanor battery. The wife was not named to protect the man's identity.

The man was treated and released at a hospital, said Calumet County District Atty. Kenneth Kratz, who otherwise declined comment.

His trip to Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, for the Junior Pan Am Games, turned out far less glamorous. He expected to see beaches and was confronted by bus window glimpses of poor people living in tin-roofed shacks. The meet drew only a couple hundred spectators a day. It rained off and on.

"It's not what I expected," he said.

Meet officials used the same tape measure for the javelin and discus competitions, taking place at the same time across a grass field from one another. Athletes who didn't bring their own equipment had to borrow others'. Sam, who placed second, thinks he was beaten by one of the two javelins he brought on the trip when an athlete from Argentina borrowed it for his final-round attempt.

.

Oh lord don't rub it in nuh

Poverty is not a crime. Perhaps someone should have interpreted what they witnessed re: that and attendance.

As far as the ineptitude with the tape ... events occurred in-country but said responsibility is not ours exclusively. Pan Am problem or LOC problem?

Nagessar vs Navas: Deputy challenges mayor over Panday
Anna Ramdass aramdass@trinidadexpress.com

Wednesday, August 5th 2009

Chaguanas deputy Mayor Orlando Nagessar yesterday challenged what he perceived as an attempt by newly appointed Mayor Natasha Navas to stop Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday from using his (Nagessar's) office to meet constituents of Chaguanas West tomorrow.

Nagessar told the Express yesterday by phone that Navas, at the corporation's first council meeting, read a "legal letter" indicating that Nagessar's office cannot be used for political purposes.

Nagessar said he immediately rose to his feet and said, "Ma'am' that is nonsense."

He said he was supported by the corporation's chief executive officer (CEO) William Mark, who agreed that Panday could use the office.

Every Thursday from 10 a.m. Panday will be meeting constituents from Chaguanas West, which is represented by Jack Warner. This follows a decision of the UNC executive that Panday would act as the surrogate MP for his constituency.

Nagessar said the UNC no longer has any control in the corporation.

He said, in the previous term, before each corporation meeting, the seven UNC councillors would meet in caucus, however that did not happen yesterday.

Nagessar said four of the seven UNC councillors held their own caucus with Navas at Warner's constituency office. He said the remaining three UNC councillors were left out.

"She (Navas) has her own agenda," said Nagessar, adding that Navas appointed the three PNM councillors as chairmen to various committees yesterday.

Nagessar said if a vote is taken for any motion, the UNC does not have any power. He claims that the "Ramjack councillors" have aligned themselves with the PNM and therefore have the majority.

Navas, in a brief telephone interview with the Express, said Nagessar's comments were untruthful.

While denying that any meeting was held at Warner's office, she admitted that a caucus was held with some of the UNC councillors at the corporation's office.

Navas said, in the thrust towards unity, PNM councillors were appointed to chair certain sub-committees. She added that this opportunity was available to all the councillors and no one was left out.

Asked her opinion on what transpired yesterday and Nagessar's view that she was Jack Warner's puppet, she responded, "I am the mayor now. I have my work to do."

I'd make a distinction between being on the ballot and being a viable candidate.

Not sure that's a useful distinction. The reality is access to the ballot is equally available to viable and gratuitous candidates alike.

Quote
well, this is why I refer to the cartel as being inadvertent.  The biggest barrier to entry is that the average voter can make reasonable assumptions about how others are going to vote.  Knowing the tendencies of the voting public, the potential 3rd party voter is presented with two options: 1) vote for the 3rd party you really want in power knowing that the odds aren't in your favour or 2) use your vote to vote against the member of the duopoly that you dislike more by voting for the other member of the duopoly.

The situation you describe is not a classic barrier to entry. What you describe depicts a glimmer of what may be electoral reality, but it is not a product of a systemic obstacle imposed by one party or another. For instance, in the American experience there have been tangible hurdles pursued by party mandate on the part of Dems and Reps to obstruct Greens and/or Libertarians and others from being placed on the ballot. Our system via the EBC does not countenance that. What you describe is a notion of voter behaviour which does not preclude access to the ballot or candidature.

We've had a diverse parade of 3rd party participation at the ballot ... viability of candidates is a different matter that is a function of the electorate's discretion rather than the interference of political parties. In your anticompetitive economic analogy, focus would have to rest on the party as an actor ... rather than on the voter/consumer as an obstruction (recall I suggested monopsony earlier).

Quote
well, there'll always be kingmakers behind the scenes.  that's an intrinsic property of a political party.  That being said, once you put somebody in charge then they in charge. Regardless of how carefully the choice is made you can't bully the person in charge unless they want to be bullied.  Over time, you'll see a much more noticeable evolution of the power players.  Contrast that to the history: except for George Chambers losing his own seat in the NAR euphoria, has any major political party had a real change in leadership other than through death?

I think you've taken a position that oscillates between idealistic to naive. The logic of these parties in our model is not to pursue drastic change. Our polity is not currently ideologically driven. Thus, the distinguishing and compelling features of appeal to the electorate lie elsewhere, and constancy in leaders (stylistically etc. favors not co-opting party orthodoxy) ... look at some of the names that have been suggested throughout the thread as potentially good PMs ... and you'll find names who have challenged (or who have been perceived to have challenged) party culture or orthodoxy.

Quote
Inferior to? the incumbents?  I think this boils down to what level of confidence one has in the population.  we might have to agree to disagree but I don't see any reason to believe that we can't find people.  It's a simple model: enter politics after a stint in the profession of your choice; be an MP for a few terms; run for PM; proceed with the rest of your life as appropriate.

There are capable people across the nation. I don't disagree. However, what are we looking for bureaucrats, technocrats or politicians?

There are several names who fit the bill of having had a stint in politics (at least in the form of parliamentary representation) and as capable professionals as they have been in their respective professions ... they were piss poor politicians. (I am sure TT could concur).

I took pains to distinguish parliamentary representation b/c fuh the most part that's not the entry point into the political arena, as you suggest.

The school that views politics as less than a professional arena in itself graduates many to the political graveyard. Politics is not a pastime ... to speak nothing of the recriminations and permanent consequential attachments that flow from the duopoly construct and misfortune that awaits when the other party is in office.
