Londoners may well have been forgiven for thinking they were witnessing a stunt from a James Bond movie as a helicopter burst into a ball of flame as it fell into a street having hit a crane...

A Proposal To Curtail Gun Violence

My thoughts are thus:
 
Each county in our country should have a three person panel comprised of retired law enforcement personnel, perhaps retired military, that would screen, in person, each individual  in their county who wishes to purchase a gun of any type’ These positions would be volunteer.

After the potential buyer passes that screening, they would be required to attend a gun safety class held by the police, located in the county seat of the prospective buyer.

Throughout the above two steps, the applicant would be under observance by law enforcement personnel. If the applicant exhibited any unusual or abnormal behavior, then they would undergo a mental health screening.

If the applicant passes all of the above, they would receive a 1 year permit to purchase guns from either an individual or a store. At the end of 1 year the applicant would have to repeat the process.

There would be a ban on the manufacture, sale, and ownership of all assault type guns. It would be a felony to violate the ban to either purchase or sale a gun without the permit.

Strong words. (I have heard both positive and negative about this man)

Swartz’s death also throws up some uncomfortable thoughts alongside that of the needless demise of a bright young man. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT as it is known, did not support Swartz and failed to stand behind its very own principles. Even Tim Berners-Lee who invented the World Wide Web was moved to tweet that hackers for right had lost a significant ‘wise elder’ and that we should weep.
 
So a young man accused of downloading huge numbers of documents from JSTOR an online research group was looking a long term prison sentence in the face if convicted. Basically his intention had been to make scientific journals belonging to MIT freely available.
 
We all know knowledge is power and people are not prepared to be denied what they want to know. The Wiki-leaks scandal is another high profile example and this death will up the ante. Swartz is an unnecessary martyr but it is quite possible he will be held up as a standard behind which ‘hackers’ will march and continue to wrest the keys to knowledge away from those who hold onto them so tightly.

Filmmaker Tyler Perry is offering a $100,000 reward for information about the cases of two men of color in Naples, Fl.

I find these stats interesting

"Although African Americans make up just 13 percent of the U.S. population, they account for 33 percent of the missing in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s database. Cases involving African Americans also tend to receive less media coverage than missing Whites, with missing men of color getting even less attention"
