North East Stars not willing to throw in the towel
By Joel Villafana (ttproleague.com)

Struggling is an under-statement—but the Defending League Champions National Quarries North East Stars are not giving up.

The Sangre Grande Stars have found life extremely difficult, as they have not been able to play with the consistency required this season.

The ‘Stars’ currently lie in 5th place on the standings on 16 points—20 points adrift of run away leaders W Connection, and at this stage it seems near impossible for the boys from Sangre Grande to mount a serious challenge to defend their title.

However, the ‘Stars’ head coach Jimmy Mc Lean is a determined and optimistic character—and he told ttproleague.com, “I am not willing to throw in the towel just yet, its too soon, you never say die until you are dead.”

“I am hopeful that the likes of Jabloteh and Defence Force play their part in slowing down Connection and give us an outside chance to fight our way back to the top. It’s not going to be easy but we will be giving it our all,” added Mc clean.

North East have experienced some trying times this season, having to sack 5 of their top players, and Coach Mc lean admitted they are in the rebuilding stage.

The Guyanese born coach said, “I am currently looking for at least 2 more players—guys who wants to come and give their all for North East Stars, but I have confidence in my team and I sincerely believe we have what it takes to rebound.”

Mr. Mc lean, was quick to give kudos to leaders W Connection.

“Hats off to connection, they are the most organized bunch this season, they are playing like a well oiled unit and they have worked hard and are playing well and they deserve to be out front at this time,” concluded Mc lean.

General Discussion / A good Trini wine is healthy
« on: August 30, 2005, 07:01:22 PM »
Trinidad Newsday

SAYING that the manner in which four women performed striptease acts in a night club over the weekend was not unlike that seen during Carnival, calypso and chutney shows, an attorney yesterday pleaded with a magistrate to exercise leniency.

Defence attorney Meewahal Chatoor told San Fernando Magis-trate Melvin Daniel that if the type of dancing police arrested and charged four women with was considered offensive, then revellers during Carnival could also be brought to court. "Is this really offensive?"

Chatoor asked. "This is part of Trinidad culture. It is not really a criminal offence," the attorney told Daniel.

Chatoor asked the magistrate to consider that the women accused were providing a service.

"A good Trini wine is considered healthy," attorney Chatoor submitted to the magistrate.

Yesterday, Simone Mahadeo, 23, Desiree John, 20, Isha Devinish, 21, and Kirby-Ann John, 17, of Diego Martin and Laventille, pleaded guilty in the Fourth Court before Daniel to performing lewd and suggestive dancing.

Two other women of Chaguanas, who were given their own bail after their arrest for the same offence, did not turn up in court for the hearing and the magistrate issued warrants for their arrest.

Mark Robinson and Sara Basdeo — owners of "Furious Pub" on Mucurapo Street, San Fernando, where the girls were arrested — also pleaded guilty in court yesterday to aiding and abetting lewd and suggestive dancing. William Moore was also charged with aiding and abetting the girls’ lewd and suggestive dancing, and he pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Mahadeo, Devnish, Desiree and Kirby-John admitted to the facts — that at about 9.40 am they were caught dancing wearing only brassieres and thong panties inside the nightclub. According to the facts read by WP Cpl Hodge, the women were exposing their breasts and private parts to patrons and invited patrons to touch them.

Hodge said the defendants had no previous convictions against them.

In mitigation, however, Chattoor told Daniel, "If these young people are bringing cathartically joy to people, then they have not actually breached any statutory offence."

The attorney also argued that dancing might be considered part of "Trini culture," which did not make it an offence.

Chattoor suggested that if Daniel should penalise the defendants, then leniency should be considered.

"We are not saying they are angels," the attorney told the magistrate, "but they are young and deserve a chance."

Daniel postponed sentencing to today.

Laid-back Yorke ready
By Nick Leys (The Australian)

August 26, 2005

THE finely sculpted racehorse-quality legs of Sydney FC striker Dwight Yorke carry the hopes of billionaire Frank Lowy and every other football fan in Australia.

The Tobago-born footballer has become a talisman for Mr Lowy's A-League, which kicks off tonight with the first round.

Under Mr Lowy's leadership, the newly created Football Federation Australia has managed to lift $15 million from the Australian Sports Commission's wallet, while an estimated $35 million has been invested in the seven Australian and one New Zealand team to contest the competition.

His pull has drawn Hyundai, Telstra, Qantas and Coca-Cola as sponsors. Names including adman John Singleton, Liberal Party stalwart Ron Walker, Art Gallery of NSW director Edmund Capon, businessman Brian Schwartz and Hollywood actor Anthony LaPaglia have put their weight behind the venture.

But there are no guarantees and when Mr Lowy, founder of the Westfield property empire, launched the league's $10 million advertising campaign earlier this month, he practically begged people to attend the games.

More than anything, Mr Lowy hopes Sydney sports fans will turn up in droves to see Yorke, the 33-year-old who just flashes a smile when asked about pressure.

"All the preparations have been done, all the talking is over and it's now time to stand up and be counted," he said after training at Sydney FC's home ground, Aussie Stadium, ahead of Sydney's first game against Melbourne Victory on Sunday.

"I'm not at all feeling pressure. I get paid a lot of money to do something that I totally enjoy, so its important I'm prepared mentally and physically and I'm just putting the final pieces together so on Sunday there's no excuses."

After playing for 16 years in England, Yorkie, as his teammates know him, enjoyed rock-star status and saw his private life raked over by the tabloids on a regular basis.

He partied as hard as he played, scoring for Manchester United, Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers. Off the field he fathered a child with topless model Jordan and appeared in an on-camera orgy with Australian player Mark Bosnich and two women.

A base salary of $2.2 million over two seasons would make the average AFL player blush, but the bling ends there. Sydney FC management have denied he has been given a $220,000 Porsche and the use of a $1.25 million Elizabeth Bay bachelor pad.

Instead he has a sensible apartment in Ultimo with an extra bedroom for when any of his nine brothers and sisters visit, or his mother, who he is expecting at Christmas.

And the wheels? Yorkie currently gets to training in an all-wheel-drive Hyundai Tucson, provided by the A-League's main sponsor. (Hyundai might be upset to hear there is no way he'll be photographed with it.)

Again, he just flashes that smile at all the speculation and interest.

"I take these things in my stride - with my West Indian background I'm a very laid-back type of guy," he said.

Time for a players’ association
By David Maynard (T&T Mirror)

WISH I could tell you I’d love to be first to rush to Russell Latapy and say welcome back, wish you well.

One out of two is not too bad because I do wish him well.

Actually, I wish all players well in this climate that is Trinidad and Tobago football, but because of this climate that is TnT football I can’t welcome them.

Russell would know of what I speak: He has had a string of manipulative ins and outs without doing any of the manipulating himself while taking quite a public tongue-lashing for it.

If one were to fault him it would be for playing along -- I don’t know, maybe for self-preservation -- instead of exposing the true culprit for the puppet master that culprit truly is.

He has even allowed the announcement about his return to be milked by those still yearning self-worth in spite of all the riches.

And the man most influential in turning his heart after his most recent of TnT embarrassments regarding the assistant coach’s job, not too long ago had good cause for self-imposed exile, too.

Yes, the two have been played like a fiddle throughout the years and sent away looking like dirt in the public’s eye in spite of 20 years of unstinting service dating back to when they were 10 and 12-year-olds.

They are not the only ones.

I know of a player based in Portugal and another in a Middle East hot spot who were threatened with ostracism from the national team if they spoke to me as reporter, at a time when the fashion of the day was to advertise players as if they were available in order to draw the crowd.

Hyped up crowds are usually forgiving when such a player did not show; or is given the red herring of a misdemeanour by the player or even the player’s club (Club vs Country; remember that?)

Many more than these four have felt a certain wrath over the years.

The more recent two have gone from appalled to discouraged to resentful -- resentful of a people who allow all this manipulation of the country’s natural talent to be done for more personal than national gain without as much as a complaint.

And now, to ... I guess, dutiful.

Dutiful because Dwight sincerely wants to give the country what it wants now and assesses that none of the current lot can provide the type of service of the ball that he needs without having to do too much additional work, in order to create an impact.

With a midfielder the calibre of Latapy, he feels, he can better exploit the 45 to 60 minutes he tells Pierre Littbarski he is capable of producing at this time, for the odd goal that would keep TnT competitive where lack of cohesion and porous defending are not.

Yes, I say bring on Latapy for the specific purpose of winning the next two matches against Guatemala and Costa Rica (after all, Leo Beenhakker is here specifically to qualify for this World Cup, not develop our game; and the hype is being regenerated through media influence again).

But bring on Latapy.

The target is just 11 points for a real chance to qualify.

Let him work his magic in midfield.

And let’s hope he does not find himself needing to be provided quality passes or wanting quality support in midfield in order to better effect his distribution to Dwight.

For, we all know how poorly the team has been on fundamentals of the game; how topsy-turvy the performances; how crucial a miss was that opportunity to improve through the Gold Cup.

Bring on Russell, bring on Dwight; but remember guys, the only thing that has changed in football administration since you last played together, is the years.

The pleasures or pains you may have known are still there.

Experience would tell you to concentrate on just the football aspect, as you must.

Just play to win.

Know your position as role models and understand your responsibility as motivators -- the likes of which has not been seen on a national team since your Strike Squad days under inspirational coach Everald “Gally” Cummings and psychologist Shirley Rudd-Ottley, in 1989.

Play your part on the field and lift the guys in belief that points against not only Guatemala and Costa Rica, but also Panama and Mexico belong to TnT.

And yes, I hear you: take it one game at a time.

But I can’t wait for after this: My wish is that, qualify or not, you use this second coming to organise national and club players as a body.

You see, because you did not put down your feet before, other players have been manipulated.

In more recent times, Clayton Ince was announced to have retired without ever having done so himself.

That hatchet was said to have been buried, but it would be another lifetime before you see him on a national team again.

And Cornell Glenn, one of the most gifted forwards of the day, is suddenly and mysteriously told his services are no longer required on the national team.

And this in the middle of a struggling campaign when players around him need all the feeling of confidence and security they could muster.

If you think that action is insensitive, then you’re part accepting that it is time for a Players’ Association.

Forget that faux pas after 1989 which some of the Strike Squad players jettisoned; the 2000 Gold Cup uprising David Nakhid seemed to have led in Los Angeles; and the more recent one by local boys Gary Glasgow, Travis Mulraine, Kelvin Jack and company in which Jack was made the scapegoat.

No backing out this time because, given your status, you have nothing to lose (well, except for that desire to be assistant national coach; they’ll never pay you like a foreigner anyway).

Think about it.

I’ll develop on how this can work in another column.

Collina quits in conflict of interest row
By James Eve (Guardian Unlimited)

Pierluigi Collina, the famous bald official who took charge of the 2002 World Cup final between Brazil and Germany, has called time on his career after quitting the Italian Association of Referees (AIA) on Monday.

Collina had been accused by the AIA of a conflict of interest after he accepted an 800,000 euros ($985,900) per year sponsorship deal from carmakers Opel, who also back AC Milan.

"After 28 years I've decided to hand in my resignation to AIA," Collina was quoted as saying by the Italian news agency ANSA.

"I can't help it. People must believe in a referee. In the end, we have all lost out," he told a news conference in his home town of Viareggio.

Collina's decision to quit brought to an end a career that turned him into one of the most recognisable figures in world football.

With his loping stride and pop-eyed stare, the Italian enjoyed a reputation for quick, accurate decision-making.

Collina possessed an authoritarian streak that won the respect of players, coaches and fans.

Had it not been for the intervention of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) at the end of last season, Collina would already have been in retirement.

He turned 45 in February, the age at which referees are obliged to hang up their whistles, but the FIGC changed the rules to give him one more year in the job.

It was a recognition of his special talent.

Five times voted World Referee of the Year, Collina's finest hour came when he took charge of the 2002 World Cup final.

He also directed a string of high-profile matches like Manchester United's dramatic 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final and England's 5-1 hammering of Germany in a World Cup qualifier in 2001.

Collina enjoyed the perks of fame, including modelling designer clothes, advertising fried octopus and cheese and even appearing in cartoon form in the video to the George Michael single Shoot the Dog.
His book, The Rules of the Game, became one of the best-selling tomes written about the referee's craft.

What now lies ahead for the Italian is uncertain. The vice-chairman of the English Football Association, David Dein, has spoken in the past about luring him to work in the Premier League.

On Monday, however, a visibly emotional Collina gave no hint of his future plans and appeared stung that his spotless career should end with his credibility being brought into doubt.

Cornell gives 'full effort' in road victory
By Robert Whitman (MLSnet.com)

August 27, 2005

Cornell Glen packed a full 90 minutes of running on the Columbus Crew's left flank Friday into 65 minutes of actual playing time without the personal reward of scoring a goal. But the Crew's 1-0 victory against the Kansas City Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium was reward enough for Glen.

"It was a bit frustrating but we came out with a win so we are happy right now," Glen said. "The coaches told me to take the ball and go at the defenders. They are a bit slow at the back so I used my pace to get at them." On Friday, Glen made his 10th start for Columbus and his 15th appearance since he was acquired from FC Dallas on April 26. He has scored three goals for the Crew, tied for the second most on the team that is the lowest scoring in Major League Soccer.

And he would have scored another one in the 63rd minute if not for a good save by Wizards goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi. Glen shot from about 15 yards away as he ran with the ball toward the goal from the left. Rookie forward Marcus Storey came in for Glen two minutes later.

"I really thought that was in," Glen said. "I made a great shot. He made a great save. Some days are like that, you play well but just don't score."

Glen consistently created chances for himself and teammates down the left flank. Glen had three shots in the game, two on goal. Crew coach Robert Warzycha seemed less concerned about Glen being too tired to go forward than being too tired to help defend the lead.

"Cornell was a little bit tired," Warzycha said. "I felt like (Wizards defender Nick) Garcia was having too much space (in which to go forward). Even if he did good things offensively, I was worried about Garcia coming forward. That's why I made that sub."

Crew midfielder Chris Henderson scored the game's only goal in the 34th minute. It was Henderson's third goal of the season and second for the Crew since coming from Colorado in a trade on May 25.

"Kyle (Martino) did a great job slipping it in," Henderson said. "I just tried to time it and stay onside. I had enough time to turn and I tried to shoot to the far post. Bo got a hand on it, but not enough and it hit the post and went in."

In the second half, the Wizards were more effective pushing forward because they kept the ball better than in the first half.

"I think we possessed the ball a lot better tonight and we made the most of our possession, especially in the first half," Crew midfielder Simon Elliott said. "I thought our first half performance was very good. In the second half, we made the mistake and sitting back and they tried to stay up and be more positive. We can't let the pendulum swing back their way."

But the pendulum never swung back enough toward the Wizards that they scored the tying goal before the final whistle.

"Some of the boys looked a little tired," Elliott said. "We managed to hang on. The first half was great. The second half, we could have done better. But having said that we stepped up and tried to win the game."

The Crew won their first game on the road in 10 tries this season.

"I think the guys have worked hard," Henderson said. "I give credit to everybody everyday. We're working on the right things and everyone gave a full effort tonight."

Adelaide United extends Kevin Nelson's trial
tribalfootball.com

Trinidad & Tobago international striker Kevin Nelson has had his trial at Adelaide United extended for another week.

"He's a reasonable finisher and he gets on the end of things on the edge of the box," Kosmina told The Advertiser.

"But to make a good judgment call, to be fair on Kevin, we need to have little bit more of a look at him.

"He's a great bloke and we're going to give him a little more time."

Kosmina said Nelson was a "good physical specimen" and was happy with his fitness levels but reiterated that the club would not rush into a signing.

"We're still talking to overseas people and that is no disrespect to Kevin," Kosmina said.

"Transfer windows are closing in Britain in the next week and it is quite possible that might free some more people up."

Kosmina is seeking replace retired midfielder Aurelio Vidmar with a new striker, but could have two spots on his roster open up with injury doubts surrounding youngster Michael Matricciani.

Nelson struts his stuff
By Daniel Lato (The Advertiser)

August 18, 2005

THE boots left behind by Aurelio Vidmar are big ones to fill.

Plenty of names have been bandied about as a possible replacement, but the first man to arrive in town is Kevin Nelson, from Trinidad and Tobago.

Nelson touched down in Adelaide yesterday, before heading to Hindmarsh Stadium to meet his potential employers.

The 26-year-old trialled with Sydney FC before Dwight Yorke signed, impressing assistant coach Ian Crook, and he is determined to grab this opportunity. "I'm not going to let this one go," Nelson said. "I left, going back to my country knowing one day I would return to Australia, because of the atmosphere and Australia is so beautiful."

Nelson had a light run at Hindmarsh Stadium yesterday to loosen up after two days of air travel.

He describes himself as a strong striker who can make diagonal runs and hold the ball at his feet.

United coach John Kosmina said Nelson had been given no guarantees about his prospects in Adelaide. "We'll see how it pans out with him," Kosmina said. He said he fully expected to enter the new season without having resolved filling the final spot in his squad.

Strike Squad play in Curepe
Trinidad Express

THE Striker Squad, Trinidad and Tobago's 1989 national football team, will on Sunday play an exhibition match against Curepe Progressive from 3.30 p.m at the Knowles Street Recreation Ground.

Some of the original members of the '89 team, including Brian Williams, Hutson Charles, Kerry Jamerson, Dexter Lee, Alvin Thomas, Marvin Faustin, Maurice Alibey and Philbert Jones are expected to play for the Strike squad.

The exhibition game is the feature of a day-long programme that will feature an Under-11 football tournament. Last year, the Under-11 tournament produced a lot of good football and drew a large crowd.

Tiger's sitting on the RSL bench has very little to do with his consistency, you need to be mindful of football politics, injuries etc... drawing it closer to home, why was Stern John off the bench for so long, while other valuable players were warming the bench??? And this is not a knock or an attack on Stern but to draw reference to the point you have raised....

Football Fan

Well in dat case, let's even de playing field and evaluate his performances over time. He has earned 20 caps so far and in my mind he started his national career with a bang (in the first 6-7 matches), but as I said before, his performances have degraded since den (noticeably wit de higher quality opposition), with de odd one or two decent games. Make no mistake, me eh coasting on de man, but he needs tuh raise his game. Me eh debating whether that should or should not keep him off we team, I jes giving an opinion on his performances. Yes, it have people who on we team dat have exhibited de same symptoms or worse, but dat is ah discussion dat would go on forever.

Just thought I should post this, cause some guys seem to forget Tiger's work rate and the contribution he can make on the disastrous left in the nat'l team...incidentally he assisted in RSL lone goal last night to help the team to a 1-1 draw.

I eh tink people fuhget, but what yuh have tuh keep in mind is dat there is a difference between what someone is capable of and what dey actually do (on a consistent basis). Even doh de Salt Lake coach was glowing in his praise of Tiger, he still has him sitting on de bench wit little or no playing time. Why is dat?

I saw him in his first 3 games (in de Digicel Cup) for T&T and I was pleasantly surprised. He was one of our better players. I thought he would have been an ideal replacement for Rougier. However, I find dat his national performances have waned since the beginning of the year, and this has coincided with his relegation tuh de Salt Lake bench. Of course, he would have been a hero in de USA match if he could have buried de one on one wit Keller. Although he has one of de better work rates, he suffers from de same ball control and crossing problems as most of our team. Like Sancho and to some extent Spann, he loves to skate tackle. I have seen him bust ass and win de ball just tuh immediately make an errant pass and give it back tuh de opposing team. He definitely needs to remain in de overall player pool.

I hope dis WCQ campaign is de last one dat is devoid of planning. I hope Lincoln Phillips and his associates get de necessary funding and support to help develop football in dis nation. I really tired :frustrated: of dis "bring back" mentality . Bring back Yorke, bring back Latas, bring back Nakhid, bring back Rougier, bring back Wise, bring back Dwarika, bring back Nixon, bring back Stokely Mason, now bring back Elcock. Whether those calls are justified or not, it illustrates de fact dat we have remained stagnant over de years. If we always having tuh be looking back, den either we current crop of players lame no ass, or we have and continue to do a poor job of spotting, developing and nurturing our talent. While our competitors are fielding talent fuh de future, we constantly recycling. No wonder when Bertille came back in charge, he immediately bring back men from yesteryear. Me eh hearing de US saying bring back Tab Ramos, bring back Marcelo Balboa, bring back Cobi Jones etc. Mexico eh saying bring back Luis Fernandez, bring back Carlos Hermosillo. We have tuh wait fuh foreign clubs tuh discover our players' potential. We have tuh wait for players tuh strike in order tuh discover new players. We too blasted reactive and not proactive. Come nah man, leh we move forward.

Bring back Ansil Elcock
By Walter Alibey (Trinidad Newsday)

Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) president Oliver Camps has welcomed the return of midfielder Russell Latapy back into the national football team, but feels other players must lift their games if we are to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

And ex-national footballer, coach, now administrator Alvin Corneal says while he agrees Latapy’s recall to the national team was a fairly easy decision, consideration must also be given to defender Ansil Elcock.

Camps pointed out that with Latapy, who has been dubbed "The Little Magician" back into the fold, it will increase our chances of qualification.

He said, "it is quite clear we have been experiencing problems in the midfield and the combination of ‘Latas’ and Dwight Yorke in the middle may be a huge threat to the opposing teams."

Trinidad and Tobago have struggled to score goals in previous matches and Camps is blaming this on the absence of a creative midfielder for such a statistic. According to Camps, "the reason Yorke and Stern John are not scoring is because they are not getting the service/passes from the midfielders."

He feels Latas will fit in perfectly and solve this problem in the Trinidad and Tobago team.

But he was quick to point out that although Latapy may be back, it would make no sense if the other players do not pull their weight.

He said Latapy has played with Yorke for quite a while and it would be easier for the duo to link up when he returns.

Meanwhile, Corneal expressed the view that with the performances of the midfielders in recent matches, he assumed that Latapy was taken in because of the need for points in the remaining matches.

He said Latapy will definitely bring something to the table and it will not be difficult because of the fact that he has been playing in Scotland.

He made it clear, however, that he was unsure of how much he (Latapy) can give at this level. He told Newsday he was unsure of the terms and conditions of Latapy’s selection, but he could only assume that it will be for the short term.

Corneal who is a member on the FIFA Technical Committee feels Elcock should also be given a recall to the national team.

He said the defenders are not playing too well and the former Columbus Crew man can well strengthen the unit. He noted however that his selection should also be for a short term, but it is important we get the points needed for us to go to the world cup.

Latapy, who is considered as one of the better local footballers ever to grace the Trinidad and Tobago football uniform, answered the call for his return following persistent pleas by Concacaf president and TTFF Special Advisor Jack Warner, as well as his former teammate and good friend Dwight Yorke.

Camps told Newsday he felt had Latapy been back into the team earlier, the Warriors may not have been in the position they are in now.

Trinidad and Tobago are now second from bottom on the standings with four points from some six matches thus far.

Meanwhile, Director of Development at CONCACAF Richard Braithwaite, has expressed the view that the return of Latapy is a good one since the team is lacking a touch of class in the midfield. He noted that one of the problems in the team is the lack of confidence among the players, which is crucial if we want to possess the ball.

Braithwaite feels that Yorke cannot only play in midfield, but added that his presence in the team is very important. It is one which gives players a boost, he said.

He added that Latapy’s presence will add even more confidence among the players and therefore he expects a solid victory over the Guatemalans next week.

He feels that both Yorke and Latapy will put TT right back into the picture.

WASA, Joe Public in Super League final
Trinidad Express

DESPITE a far less impressive season than last year when they swept both the league and knockout titles, Joe Public will defend their knockout crown when they take on WASA Clean & White in an all East derby to conclude the 2005 Sportworld National Super League knockout competition.

The finalists meet tomorrow from 7. 30 p.m. at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. The 'Water Boys' WASA , reached the final after shutting out Couva Players United. The match was tight for most of the first half and was goalless until the 55th minute when Billydee Scantlebury shot WASA into the lead. And despite Couva's effort to pull level, it was WASA who pushed further ahead in the 68th minute when Stephen Pierre's goal gave them a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Meanwhile, Joe Public scored in each half to register a similar 2-0 victory over Tobago's Stokely Vale. Former national midfielder and ex-Hibernian professional Lyndon "Chubby" Andrew shot the "Eastern Lions" ahead in the 16th minute, while striker Carlington Smith sealed the win in the 85th.

The Super League knockout competition has also served the purpose of selecting five teams to compete in the National FA Trophy competition. Semi-finalists WASA Clean & White, Joe Public, Stokely Vale and Couva Players United have all gotten automatic berths, while the fifth place will be determined by a playoff on Sunday.

Hector Sam blow leaves Port Vale looking for attacking options
By James Robson (The Sentinel)

Port Vale striker Hector Sam could be out for up to three months after it was confirmed he broke his leg in Tuesday's Carling Cup defeat at Rotherham. The Trinidad and Tobago international is still awaiting confirmation of how long he will be sidelined, but it looks certain he will miss the next two months at least.

Vale manager Martin Foyle bemoaned Sam's luck after only just getting back to match fitness following an injury in pre-season.

The latest blow leaves Foyle short on attacking options, with Lee Matthews still not considered ready to start a match.

The Vale boss said: "He's definitely got a crack in the bone, but it's hard to guess how long he'll be out. We should have more of an idea when it's looked over again.

"But we are looking like eight weeks plus.

"It's a massive blow for him and me because he did well in pre-season, but got an injury at the wrong time. Then he gets back to a position where he's pushing for a place in the team and this happens."

Foyle spent yesterday trying to secure some loan signings before the weekend, but as yet has been rebuffed in his approaches.

But he revealed he has received the backing of the board to strengthen his squad after injuries this week to Sam Collins, Mark Innes, George Abbey and Mickey Bell.

Foyle said: "I've got no problem with the board, it's getting people who want to come and play that's difficult. I've got players in mind, but it's a bank holiday and clubs don't want to let them go.

"A lot of clubs have got small squads this season."
