Entertainment & Culture Discussion / Re: Dimarche Gras Finals 2011
« on: March 08, 2011, 04:42:47 PM »
Easily my favourite performance of the night...

http://www.youtube.com/v/5NWRSyWYo7M

It could be argued that Brian London didn't deserve the win, but 7th? 7th??? ???

From coming out inside the Shadow hat in a half-Shadow costume, to his use of Shadow's trademark tone and melisma throughout the song, to the additional verse at the end- this performance was on point.

But overall, I would have hated to be a judge, the majority of the field came good this year.

Football / Re: Breaking: Top Trinidadian Footballer Injured
« on: January 26, 2011, 09:21:50 PM »
AP -
01/25/2011

A Trinidadian midfielder playing in the US was injured on Tuesday night while turning out for his local Miami team. He was having another great game in this spring season, having created 2 goals and threatening to score with two shots on goal. Sadly, about 30 minutes into the game he suffered a double ankle ligament sprain to his gifted right foot. After beating his Jamaican opponent, the Jamaican desperately or perhaps maliciously stuck out a foot which caught Peong's trailing right foot. His team "Yellow Bibs" were disheartened to lose such a creative midfielder, but vowed to fight on. A Yellow Bibs spokesperson has confirmed that Peong will be out for 4-6 weeks. Peong was reported to be resting and applying ice-packs.

Speedy recovery... :beermug:

In related news, there should really be a Miami sweat sometime.

De team is no longer called the Kansas City Wizards. They are now known as Sporting Kansas City.

What a silly pretentious name.

Good luck to both regardless, this is a tremendous opportunity and I hope they give it their all.

According to an interview I read with their president, the name changed b/c they would like to become an all-around sports club, like Barcelona or Real Madrid. I.E. they don't only want to be a football team, but a rugby side, a volleyball team, a lacrosse team, etc.

Side note on the Qatari question:

Yesterday I was talking about the selection on facebook with a good friend of mine from UAE... I mentioned that although no one doubts Qatar's ability to host an event of this magnitude, especially since they have tons of money at their disposal, Qatar's main challenges will be related to creating a completely climate-controlled infrastructure to keep people out the heat, temporarily relaxing social norms to allow for drinking, scantily clad girls and the like, and then convincing the World that this is a tournament for "everyone" to attend. Here's what he had to say:

"Infrastructure is not a problem, they will be building pretty much a world cup city just for the event with 5 world class stadiums away from current Qatari cities with new hotels and road systems to handle the event. The laws in Qatar are not that strict but the social norms will be something to deal with. Especially since soccer is the #1 sport in the middle east and many arabs will be coming from neighboring countries- i can see that as being an issue but Qatar is looking to be the hub for soccer in the middle east and i can see them putting great efforts to be as liberal as possible to keep a good image for future events. Also Qatar is very safe, low risk of crime for fans, unlike Brazil"

Guess I'll start saving for Qatar from now...

General Discussion / Re: America - He's your President for Goodness Sake!
« on: November 12, 2010, 04:02:08 PM »
What gets me are the references to "Obama" in the media and from the opposition. I could be wrong, but never before have people been so comfortable with addressing a sitting President so informally and irreverently.
I've been saying this for a long time...It bothers me also....

It bothers me as well, but people (especially the media) did away with a lot of the respect that is generally accorded to the President while George W. Bush was in office. To me, one of President Obama's biggest challenges has not only been leading the country out of W's mess, but also convincing a lot of people that the President's office is worth respecting and trusting again.

Hmm...what can I say about Miami Carnival that hasn't already been said...

I wasn't able to do any of my usual partying during the week beforehand this year, and was only able to play mas. Nevertheless, the road more than made up for the lack of partying. Grades:

Vibes A+

Organization A+... not bad for the first time @ Sun Life

Location A... Putting Carnival in between Broward and Dade Counties was a boss move, although I'll miss jumping in beautiful downtown MIA. One thing that needs to be fixed for next year is that there really was no place for paying spectators inside the park to view the bands coming in- the little space it had to watch the bands in was standing room only.

Parade Route C-... The route was the only problem I had w/ this year's carnival. The parade route was only 1.9 miles, and .5 of those miles were spent on an isolated, fenced-off road with no spectators anywhere. They really need to work on this for next year.

Women...Oh, the women... I can't even give this a grade :o All races, all nationalities... all ages, shapes, and sizes... they were all on display on the road. The women of Miami Carnival are always as beautiful and diverse as the city itself, and this year was no exception :beermug:

They aren't playing well, but JP has definitely stepped their game up in the 13 minutes since the half- some of the players must've read SW.net during halftime.

and sigh...if only Tinto's crosses had a point to them- that must be why they just subbed him off for G. Gregory.

Maybe JP needs more foreigners lol... when "Jackie Chan", Figueroa, etc. were on that JP CCL team 2 years ago, I don't remember them looking this bad...

Here's another question- everyone knows that Baptiste has been one of the hottest strikers in CONCACAF over the past year or so- has he even had a look at goal yet?

I now asking the same question- he's been lucky enough to have had 2 goals called back for offsides already- and it's only the 31st minute.

Has CB repped for TT under Latas as coach? If so how many caps out of a possible given number?

Yeah he played in the Costa Rica match in Tobago last year. I stand to be corrected but he hasn't played for Latapy since then.....

Also played against Mexico in Mexico when we lost 2-1...played a hell of a game too.

He did??............ah think yuh right....ah sure we resident archive of information will confirm for us soon.....

Yeah, he did- if I recall correctly, it was his pressure that forced the bad pass from the Mexican defender that led to Tinto's goal.

It's amazing that even if u didn't know the teams u could tell which is from Trini....Everything is hurried...Even when it doesn't have to..
Yeah... This jab team can't seem to get that final through ball just right- maybe they just need to calm down a bit. It's easy to see where losing a lot of those experienced players has hurt them.

Football / Re: D Touches Match Report TT vs Antigua
« on: July 22, 2010, 01:33:47 PM »
The brand is good but the personnel not so good.

The two centre backs were the low point today. Latas trying to possess the ball more but for it to be effective the back 4 must be comfortable with the ball at their feet.

And as Touches said, we lack a bruiser in midfield. Someone in the mould of Rougier or Carrington to just break up plays and be an imposing figure. I think its coming together from an attacking standpoint, we trying to be patient with the ball and pick a pass.

Need more games to get it right though.
.
Without a doubt, Birchy is the man to fill that role; Whitley on his good days was a midfield gangsta as well... the fit and clearheaded version of Whitley was definitely missed last WC campaign.

Football / Re: Thread for the T&T vs Antigua Game (21-July-2010)
« on: July 22, 2010, 01:18:11 PM »
Just came back from the game. Convincing win yes; dominating: NO; ball control YES; Ant/Bar better possession in first half, they had more opportunities. The two breakdowns they had, TnT capitalized on defensive blunders.

Let's consider the opposition...... this was not Jamaica. In my humble opinion we still lacking pace, urgency and assertiveness at the front end. Our back end showed improvements except for a few indecisive moments.

We still looking like an amateur team for this level. We have miles to go but positive start and positive win.

 El Tigre say

Time to rid T&T football of ‘mash-up’ mentality

Russell has organised his sessions in a manner that addresses the main deficiency that bedevils many of our teams: keeping possession.

Since possession is the focus, every facet of Russell’s training sessions, that I have seen, is structured to address the stated deficiency. I see both structure and relevance consistently on display in these sessions from the warm up to technical training (drills) to small-sided conditional games that progress to 11 vs 11 games.

Is that really the problem, or is the real issue lack of patience, concentration, and killer instinct? This is definitely a step though.

so hold on lemme get this straight.. all ah allyuh men in Suarez situation with a whole world cup riding on allyuh back and last second of the game, and yuh telling me that allyuh would just watch the ball sail over yuh head in the name of morals?? lol

well all allyuh better than me yes. ah bet if Dennis Lawrence did it yuh woulda say he's a hero steups..

I agree with you Dinho; even in the midst of my frustration yesterday, I never for one second faulted Suarez for what he did. What he did is of course illegal according to the rules of football, but given the match situation completely understandable.

This is the world cup we are talking about after all. As gigsy say, we should be more upset with the Ghanian players who did not score their penalties.
Buth then again, that's football.

I totally agree- even though I was pulling for Ghana, the blame should truly be placed on everyone who couldn't step up and bring their best effort in a pressure situation (especially the one man who took his PK lackadaisically).

In retrospect, if you take your emotions out of the game and think about it- Suarez' handball was one of the smartest, most heads-up and ballsy plays I've ever seen in a football match, even though it was probably just a knee-jerk reaction to begin with. Like ah man said, if Lawrence or Edwards did the same thing to save we in a big game, men on this board would be naming their sons after him.

Remember- when teams are closely matched on the world football stage, more often than not the team with the best gamesmanship has an edge. Ask Italy's '06 team.

Fellas I play with a Jabulani today... is real pressure... de ball have a kinda sponginess that when yuh kick it, it flying off yuh foot into space...

doh talk for de flight of de ball... I send een two cross dat swing two ways and nearly end up in the goal, had de keeper scrambling... adidas hadda go back to de drawing board with that ball in my opinion...

I played with Jabulani in a tournament a couple weeks ago; I really didn't have a problem with it once I was able to warm up a little (then again, I'm not a striker or goalkeeper, lol). Honestly, Jabulani didn't seem too much different than many of the newer balls on the market today, especially when compared to the drastic difference between Teamgeist and the other balls that were out in 2006.

I would say that in any case, going for accuracy instead of power does a world of good with Jabulani, and that you had better trap Jabulani before it bounces, because even on a damp pitch, it bounces like a basketball off a blacktop. Just my two cents...

Our finta and rossi jerseys lookin as good as any of them big name brand jerseys. Plus we could probably get a little customization instead of these generic jerseys adidas has given us

Yes they do , but the big name brand comes with big name financial and equipment support as well.

The team runs though practices with the world cup kit & plays games in the newer kit does that seem like big equipment ?
don't get me wrong i love the fact that i can go to a store & actually pick up a T&T kit, but thats not anything big.

I agree KingK.
This whole sponsorship deal was overrated in my opinion. How much money did we really see from it? And what are they going to do with the old kits/equipment? Dispose of them? That would be dumb.

By "we" you mean Jack, right?

I agree Jabloteh come out lookin like punks.
River Plate instigated it. Jabloteh's punishment wouldn't have been worse thatn River Plate's.
And I don't blame it on professionalism, if a man in yuh face like that is time to fight.
If you don't push back you're a coward.
I real surprised at how Jabloteh and the fans let that slide.

Unfortunately they cut Whitley only a few weeks ago.

I've been to a few stadia all over, but there are two that stick out to me (that I haven't seen mentioned here):

Reliant Stadium/Park, Houston, Tx, USA- I went to a Mexico/Colombia Gold Cup game here, the facilities were beautiful and the atmosphere was great... and there was nothing like seeing the Mexicans leaving dejectedly after being eliminated from the tournament by a NASTY chip from about 40yds out to win.

Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, Mexico D.F., Mexico- I saw Club America play @ Azteca- I don't remember much about the game, but I will NEVER forget the fact that there were 107000 rabid fans watching the match with me.

Interesting article,

I find the 0% water retention stat impressive.

Now big clubs and teams use a match ball maybe once, but for the lay person like me who buying a ball to run in sweat how durable are they.

Usually after a one play it scuff up and the "coating" gone especially if you playing on the "pristine" dry season fields that we have in abundance in T+T.

I found the last teimgeist to be light and if you played with the lower end replicas it felt like a beachball, spongey spongey.

The best brand of ball I ever kick wasn't no nike or adidas or mitre....it was a brand called select.
Good cushion, bounce and durability. The high end ball was called a "brilliant" clocking bout 100us and a good decent sweat ball was a numero 10 for about a 30$. Also the brand that coming second was a Brine...It was a US. highschool ball and it have a NHS stamp on it but the ball kicking good, spalding also had one...and they were not cheap about $100 US for one.

I agree- I remember the first time i played with that ball was about a month after '06 World Cup in a tournament final- the difference between kicking the teamgeist and the "mikasa" brand balls used earlier in that tournament was as blatant as the difference between jumping on the ground and jumping on a trampoline. It definitely took some getting used to- evidently my team couldn't get used to it fast enough that day :-\
