Navas is AATT's new HR manager

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/Navas_is_AATT_s_new_HR_manager-102831324.html

Former mayor of Chaguanas Natasha Navas was introduced yesterday as the manager, human resources of the Airport Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (AATT).

Sources said Navas was introduced at a manager's meeting of the AATT yesterday. The AATT falls under the Ministry of Works and Transport, which is the portfolio held by Jack Warner. It was Warner who brought Navas into national politics in 2009 when he took control of the Chaguanas council from the Basdeo Panday faction.

'Warriors' should be ashamed now

The entire men's senior World Cup team that is trying to suck Jack Warner dry must be hanging their heads in shame after our team's most positive start in the FIFA under-17s Women's World Cup football competition.

The men's senior team has had numerous opportunities and exorbitant financial assistance over "donkey years" and want diamonds, pearls, rubies, gold and more money for mediocrity. Dey eh win ah game and dey want money, money, money and more money.

Jack Warner making magic to allow them to qualify yet still they seem hopeless every time they take the field.

In their first game the young ladies have done what those highly-paid professional paupers could not do, win ah game at the highest level.

At their every turn and after umpteen millions were spent on them, they are still promising to do better next time. Time gone boys. Do the honourable thing, apologise to Jack Warner for failing him and the country, buy a ticket for the games taking place now and see how to WIN on the field of play. If it were anyone else in Jack Warner's position, what would you do for the young ladies? What should be done is to look after those young ladies' educational needs and ensure they qualify in their career of choice, not gee dem money, money, money.

Stop the greediness and play the game with passion and financial rewards is icing on the cake.

Leicester and ex-Newcastle star Solano in rape probe

Leicester City and former Newcastle United footballer Nolberto Solano has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Police arrested the 35-year-old Peruvian international at a house in the Gosforth area of Newcastle in the early hours of Monday.

The arrest follows an allegation of rape made by a 22-year-old woman from the city.

Northumbria Police said inquiries were ongoing and that the player had been released on bail.

Solano, 35, spent eight years at Newcastle in two spells and has also played for Aston Villa and West Ham.

He completed his move to Leicester City in January.

Liverpool put up for sale by American owners

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/8624597.stm

In-depth - New Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton

Liverpool owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have confirmed their intention to sell the debt-ridden Premier League club by appointing a new chairman.

British Airways boss Martin Broughton will oversee the sale of the Anfield club, which is £237m in debt.

"They've recognised a complete sale is the right thing to do at this stage in time," Broughton told BBC Sport.

Hicks and Gillett say there have been numerous expressions of interest and have asked Barclays Capital to assist.

Chief executive Christian Purslow, along with two banks - Merrill Lynch and Rothschilds - had been asked to find £100m of investment to satisfy a request from the club's principal creditor, RBS.

But with significant investment not forthcoming and issues over funding for a new stadium in Stanley Park and providing a substantial transfer budget for manager Rafael Benitez becoming increasingly significant, the Americans have decided their best option is to sell up - a move they say has the "full support of the existing bankers".

In a statement, Hicks and Gillett said: "Owning Liverpool Football Club over these past three years has been a rewarding and exciting experience for us and our families.

"Having grown the club this far we have now decided together to look to sell the club to owners committed to take the club through its next level of growth and development.

"We are delighted that Martin Broughton has agreed to take the position of chairman, working alongside the club's excellent senior management team.

"Martin is a distinguished business leader of excellent judgment and with a great reputation. He is a genuine football supporter and will seek to oversee the sales process in the best interests of the club and its supporters."
George Gillett and Tom Hicks
Gillett and Hicks took over Liverpool in March 2007

Broughton, a Chelsea fan, added: "I am excited and honoured to be taking up this position. Liverpool is a great club with a fantastic history.

"I will run this sale process in the right way, for the benefit of the club and its fans.

"Liverpool is one of the world's greatest clubs and my aim is to try and ensure that we find new owners who are able to build on the club's recent improved financial performance in order to help deliver sporting success."

Liverpool are in serious danger of missing out on qualifying for next season's Champions League, which would have a major impact on the finances at the club and the value to any prospective buyer.

They are sixth in the Premier League and trail Manchester City, who occupy the last of the four Champions League places, by six points with four games to play.

Rogan Taylor, who founded ShareLiverpoolFC - where fans would pay £500 for one share with the idea being to run the club along the lines of Barcelona - believes stumbling blocks still remain in the way of the proposed sale.

"The real problem is the price they want - they've piled a lot of debt onto the club and the effects on the pitch have been obvious this season," Taylor told BBC Radio 5 live.

"The question is are they going to be realistic in their valuation of the club - it's only worth what someone will give you for it."

The fact that a City big hitter with a serious reputation like Broughton has been brought in tells you how bad the situation has become

Co-owners Hicks and Gillett have endured a difficult time at Liverpool since taking over at Anfield in March 2007.

Supporters have regularly voiced their dissatisfaction at the level of debt taken on by the club after the buy-out by the American duo.

Last October, several hundred Liverpool fans staged a protest march organised by the Spirit of Shankly group against the owners ahead of their Premier League clash against Manchester United.

The board's popularity with the fans disintegrated further when Hicks' son, Tom Hicks Jr, became embroiled in a row with a supporter who alleged the American had sent him abusive emails.

As a result Hicks Jr resigned as a director of the club and parent company Kop Holdings, leading to a restructure of the board.

Gillett and Hicks have also endured a fractious relationship with each other, which early on in their reign threaten to undermine their ownership with the former revealing the partnership had become "unworkable".

In 2008, Hicks blocked Gillett's moves to sell his 50% share to Dubai International Capital group as the pair feuded over future plans for the club and an outright £500m takeover bid by the DIC group was also rebuffed, with Hicks hinting he would attempt an outright takeover bid himself.
Martin Broughton
Broughton will oversee the sale of the club

They subsequently patched up their differences but the sense of unrest at the club continued, not least in the often difficult working relationship the board shared with manager Benitez.

The Liverpool boss, who is celebrating his 50th birthday on Friday, is yet to speak to Broughton, but said he was optimistic that any changes would have beneficial consequences for the club.

"I think the club is moving forward and that is positive. It could be good news," Benitez said.

"At this moment, for me as a manager, I have to concentrate on the West Ham game (on Monday)."

The Spaniard has previously spoken of the limited transfer funds made available to him to strengthen his squad, highlighting this as a factor behind the decline of the team's performance on the pitch.

The sale of midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid for £30m has been widely criticised as Liverpool's difficult campaign unfolded, with his £20m replacement Alberto Aquilani struggling for fitness all season to the frustration of Benitez.

While Hicks and Gillett have publicly backed their manager, who signed a contract until 2014 in March last year, they undermined Benitez's position in 2007 when they admitted to having held talks with former Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann.

However, Benitez's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon said on Thursday that his client intends to see out the rest of his contract, provided the club's financial situation allows it.

The Liverpool boss has been linked with Juventus again this week, with the Serie A club reportedly having made him their number one target back in January, but Quilon dismissed the recent rumours.

"I have received interest from Italian clubs for players but not for a coach. I have not received any interest (recently) from Juventus for Rafa Benitez," Quilon said.

"Juve approached us back in January but we told them that the coach would not be leaving Liverpool this season."

Benitez has also previously been linked with the Real Madrid post, which seems likely to become vacant again this summer.

Erykah Badu To Be Fined $500 for Publicly Stripping in Dallas

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCaCIstoOsU

Erykah Badu will be fined $500 for disorderly conduct after she stripped nude and pretended to be shot in the head in the same Dallas plaza where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, The Dallas Morning News reports.

At first, police said no citizens complained after the "Window Seat" video was filmed on March 13 and there were no plans to pursue charges against the 39-year-old singer. However, once the video was released on March 29, one witness came forward and said she had two small children with her at the time of the shoot and was offended to see Badu strip in public, according to the newspaper.

he Dallas Police Department said that they expect the ticket to be issued some time next week.

Badu, a Dallas native, told the Dallas Morning News earlier in the week that the video was "a protest" and about "liberating yourself." She tweeted on Saturday, "i don't care i still love my city and its people."

Football / U.S. U-17 women beat Haiti 9-0, then offer hugs
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:03:47 PM »

http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/blog/sow_experts/post/U-S-U-17-women-beat-Haiti-9-0-then-offer-hugs?urn=sow,227662

On Wednesday, the U.S. women's under-17 team defeated Haiti 9-0 in their first qualifying match for the CONCACAF U-17 Women's Championships in Costa Rica. Once the final whistle blew, Haitian goalkeeper Alexandra Coby was so overwhelmed with emotion that she dropped to the pitch, weeping. It was all just too much for her and understandably so -- losing by such a harsh margin, even to a much better team, is always difficult to take, but given that Haiti is in the midst of trying to recover from the devastating earthquake that ravaged the Caribbean nation's capital two months ago and left hundreds of thousands of people dead, there was much more saddling these girls than just a lost game.

And the U.S. team saw that. As Haiti's coach helped the crying goalkeeper to her feet, U.S. goalie Bryane Heaberlin walked the length of the pitch, gave Coby a hug and didn't let go. The rest of the U.S. team soon joined her, circling around the two goalkeepers for a long group hug that left the entire squad in tears.

Said Heaberlin to USsoccer.com:

“I saw her crying and that was pretty hard for me to see. She’s a 'keeper and we have that bond. I knew that she had probably lost people close to her, and when she goes home she might not have anywhere to go. I gave her a big hug and told her she did great. She came to compete in this tournament despite all that she’s been through and I have tremendous respect for her.”

Haiti's participation in the tournament despite all that's going on back home for them has been the talk of the competition and the team's determination and bravery hasn't been lost on their opponents. Added U.S. defender Olivia Brannon:

“It just put everything into perspective. It makes you realize what is truly important, your family, having a roof over your head, and having food on the table. We take all those things for granted. I had my mom in the stands cheering for me tonight. Some of these girls might never have that again.”

So while the match itself may have seemed like piling on, it should be pointed out that the U.S. team didn't pander to their Haitian counterparts, instead showing them the respect of playing hard the whole game before sharing their true feelings and consolations after the final whistle. And these young Haitian girls will hopefully go back knowing that they're not alone.

Seven costly pro athlete screw-ups

http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=ys-investopediamoneyloss031010&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Almost 80 percent of National Football League players are flirting with bankruptcy two years after they retire, according to Sports Illustrated. NBA players aren’t faring much better. 60 percent of former National Basketball Association players end up broke within five years of retirement. Athletes squander millions of dollars due to bad decisions, lavish spending and poor financial planning. Here is a list of athletes that have lost their fortunes through some of the biggest financial blunders of all time.

Scottie Pippen

Known more for his on court defense than his off court business sense, former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen lost $120 million in career earnings due to poor financial planning and bad business ideas. Air Jordan’s sidekick blew $27 million on bad investments and spent $4.3 million on a Gulfstream II corporate jet.

Evander Holyfield

Four-time boxing champ Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield reportedly made over $250 million in cash during his boxing career, but despite this he reportedly is flat broke. Holyfield lost all his money by making “smart” business decisions look really foolish. You thought buying a house was a smart move? It normally is, but not when you buy a house the size of Rhode Island. Holyfield bought a $20 million house with over 54,000 square feet and 109 rooms. The house has 11 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, a movie theater, a bowling alley and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Imagine how much it must cost to cut the grass on all 235 acres! You could buy a Range Rover with the electric bill payment alone.

Lenny Dykstra

Former New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies star Lenny “Nails” Dykstra was a success on the baseball diamond, but in the business field Dykstra has struck out. Dykstra’s failed businesses include car washes, a magazine company, real estate investing and a stock trading website. According to Dykstra’s July 2009 bankruptcy filing, he owed more than $30 million to creditors, including his $18.5 million purchase of Wayne Gretzky’s home. The amazing part is that after two foreclosed homes and numerous failed businesses Dykstra is offering the investment advice that led him into bankruptcy for a mere $899 a year! In the investment world, it is often said that past history does not dictate future performance. Nevertheless, it’s pretty clear Dykstra isn’t the guy to go to for advice.

Latrell Sprewell

Look up the word “shortsighted” in the dictionary and you will see a picture of Latrell Sprewell. He famously turned down a $21 million contract because he said it wasn’t enough money to feed his family. Sprewell, who made over $96 million during his career, lost his $1.5 million dollar Italian yacht, named “Milwaukee’s Best”, in 2007. According to MSNBC, a U.S. marshal seized the yacht after Sprewell defaulted on his mortgage. His $5.4 million house went into foreclosure in May 2008. Don’t blame Sprewell for turning down the three-year, $21 million contract though. I mean really, who could live off a measly $7 million a year?

John Daly

Two-time PGA major champ John Daly gambled away between $50 and $60 million in career earnings, according to his 2006 autobiography. Daly once lost $1.65 million in five hours playing the slot machines at a casino. If you think that’s impressive, there’s more. Daly blew $1.2 million in a mere two hours and 30 minutes at a casino in Las Vegas. He just had his $1.6 million house foreclosed on. Did Daly quit gambling after blowing so much cash at the casino tables? Not by a long shot. Instead, he decided to downgrade from the $5,000 slot machines to the $100 and $500 machines. It looks in John Daly’s world, that is considered sound financial planning.

Jack Clark

Former professional baseball slugger Jack Clark was driven into bankruptcy in 1992 by his appetite for luxury cars. According to his bankruptcy filing, he owned 18 luxury automobiles, including a $700,000 Ferrari and a Rolls Royce. Clark was trying to pay 17 car notes simultaneously, and whenever he got bored with a car he would get rid of it and just buy another one. He ended up losing million-dollar homes and his drag-racing business because of his extravagant spending habits, but despite one of the most publicized bankruptcies in baseball, Clark reportedly got back on his feet in the late ’90s.

Mike Tyson

The king of them all is boxer Mike Tyson, who squandered a $350 million to $400 million dollar fortune. So what did “Iron” Mike spend his fortune on? Everything. He dropped half a million dollars on a 420-horsepower Bentley Continental SC with lamb’s wool rugs, a phone and a removable glass roof. It is one of only 73 Bentley Continental SCs ever built. The sad part is that’s not even the only Bentley that Tyson owned! He spent over $4.5 million dollars on cars alone. Throw in a $2 million dollar bathtub and $140,000 for two Bengal tigers and you can see why Tyson’s fortune is down for the count. He filed for bankruptcy in 2003.

Brazil star Ronaldinho doubtful for World Cup squad

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/8506394.stm

Ronaldinho could miss the World Cup after being omitted from Brazil's final warm-up friendly ahead of the summer tournament in South Africa.

He will not face Ireland at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in London on 2 March.

The AC Milan star, 29, has not played for Brazil since the start of 2009, but his improved recent form has encouraged supporters to call for his return.

But coach Dunga has resisted pressure from the fans and local media in Brazil to recall the ex-Barcelona forward.

The 1994 World Cup winning captain has kept faith with Michel Bastos (Lyon), Juan and Doni (both Roma), Kleberson (Flamengo) and Gilberto (Cruzeiro).

Former Manchester City forward Robinho, who is now on-loan at Santos, has been included in the squad as has Liverpool midfielder Lucas. But there is no place for Manchester United midfielder Anderson.

Ronaldinho won the World Cup in 2002 and famously knocked out England at that tournament after lobbing keeper David Seaman with a second-half free-kick.

Brazil legend Pele was another who called for Ronaldinho to return to the fold.

Ronaldinho has appeared 87 times for his country, scoring 32 times.

He was also twice named World player of the year in 2004 and 2005 and has won the prestigious Ballon d'Or (european player of the year) once.

West Indies' Jerome Taylor charged after bar scuffle

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/other_international/west_indies/8436774.stm

West Indies bowler Jerome Taylor has been charged with improper conduct and assaulting a police officer following a bar scuffle in Jamaica.

Police sergeant Clifford Evans says Taylor became abusive after the proprietor was told to close the bar because it was past an 11pm cut-off.

Evans said Taylor assaulted him when he tried to place the 25-year-old in handcuffs shortly after midnight.

He was also charged with using indecent language and resisting arrest.

Taylor was released and scheduled to appear in court on 12 January.

Taylor has taken 82 wickets in 29 Tests since his debut for the West Indies against Sri Lanka in 2003, and played in 62 one-day internationals.

He is also a capable lower-order batsman with a highest score of 106 against New Zealand.

Taylor was forced to return home from the recent tour of Australia because of injuries to his left hip and back.

Why men shouldn’t write advice columns

Dear John
I hope you can help me. The other day I set off to work, leaving my husband in the house watching TV. My car stalled and then it broke down about a mile down the road, and I had to walk back to get my husband’s help. When I got home, I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbor’s daughter!

I am 32, my husband is 34 and the neighbor’s daughter’s daughter is 19. We have been married for 10 years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted they had been having an affair for the past 6 months. He won’t go to counseling and I am afraid, I am a wreck and need advice urgently. Can you please help?

Sincerely, Sheila

Dear Sheila
A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors.
I hope this helps

John

Jokes / The Gay Cowboy and the Widow
« on: December 06, 2009, 09:54:30 PM »

A successful rancher died and left everything to his devoted wife. She was a very good-looking woman and determined to keep the ranch, but knew very little about ranching, so she decided to place an ad in the newspaper for a ranch hand.

Two cowboys applied for the job. One was gay and the other a drunk. She thought long and hard about it; and when no one else applied, she decided to hire the gay guy, figuring it would be safer to have him around the house than the drunk. He proved to be a hard worker who put in long hours every day and knew a lot about ranching. For weeks, the two of them worked, and the ranch was doing very well. Then one day, the rancher's widow said to the hired hand, 'You have done a really good job, and the ranch looks great. You should go into town and kick up your heels.'

The hired hand readily agreed and went into town one Saturday night. One o'clock came, however, and he didn't return. Two o'clock and no hired hand. Finally, he returned around two-thirty; and upon entering the room, he found the rancher's widow sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine, waiting for him.

She quietly called him over to her. 'Unbutton my blouse and take it off,' she said. Trembling, he did as she directed. 'Now take off my boots.' He did as she asked, ever so slowly. 'Now take off my socks.' He removed each gently and placed them neatly by her boot's. 'Now take off my skirt.' He slowly unbuttoned it, constantly watching her eyes in the fire light. 'Now take off my bra.' Again, with trembling hands, he did as he was told and dropped it to the floor.

Then she looked at him and said, 'If you ever wear my clothes into town again, you're fired

Football / Bent says Mum 'racially abused'
« on: November 29, 2009, 07:03:10 AM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/s/sunderland/8384652.stm

Police are investigating an allegation that Darren Bent's mother was racially abused by a Sunderland fan during their 1-0 away defeat by Wigan.

"So we get beaten by Wigan and my mum gets racially abused by a Sunderland fan," Bent wrote on his Twitter feed.

Calling it an "absolute disgrace", Bent added: "I won't stand for that."

A Sunderland spokeswoman told BBC Sport: "Sunderland are liaising with Northumbria Police to fully investigate this matter."

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) appealed for witnesses to come forward as they also launched an investigation into the report of racial abuse.

The Sunderland spokeswoman added: "Behaviour of this kind is totally unacceptable to our football club."

Bent, who has scored nine Premier League goals this season, joined Sunderland from Tottenham in August for a club-record fee that could rise to £16.5m.

Before his move was completed the 25-year-old Bent criticised Spurs chairman Daniel Levy on the social networking site over the delay of his transfer.

One of Bent's tweets said: "Do I wanna go to Hull? No. Do I wanna go to Stoke? No. Do I wanna go to Sunderland? Yes."

Bent is an avid user of Twitter and has over 20,000 followers on the micro-blogging site.

GMP asked witnesses to the alleged incident to call 0161 872 5050.

Smith is forced to leave Sussex

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/counties/sussex/8324147.stm

Dwayne Smith has left Sussex and returned to the West Indies because of complications with his work permit.

The all-rounder, who signed a three-year deal in 2008, has been forced to go back to Barbados but the club hope he will be able to return for 2010.

He no longer qualifies as a Kolpak player as he has not been playing in the UK since 2006, and has also not played enough recent Test cricket.

Under new regulations, he had to satisfy one of the two criteria.

"Dwayne has been a huge force for us," Sussex's Dave Brooks told BBC Sport.

"We obviously did want to hold onto him. He is the fifth-highest scorer in Twenty20 cricket anywhere in the world and he is probably the best outfielder in the world," added the Sussex chief executive.

"It was always his intention to stay, but he is now back in Barbados and looking to get into the West Indies side."

Under pre-existing immigration regulations, a cricketer who has represented his country must have played one Test match in the past two years or five Test matches in the past five years to be eligible when first registered as a Kolpak player.

But Smith is the first victim of a new ruling that states that where that criterion expires, a player must have had four consecutive years of UK work permits behind him before being granted 2010 county registration as a Kolpak.

The Kolpak ruling has been in place since a European Court of Justice ruling in 2003 in favour of Maros Kolpak, a Slovak handball player seeking work in Germany.

His legal action allowed players from countries and regions with associate trade agreements with the European Union - such as South Africa and the West Indies - to be treated as non-overseas players.

Smith last played Test cricket in 2006, and has since excelled in the Twenty20 game.

"When Dwayne joined in 2008, he was eligible, but he no longer meets that criteria," Brooks said.
Dwayne Smith
Smith has been central to Sussex's Twenty20 side for the past two years

"He now has to concentrate on getting picked for the West Indies and given the way he has been performing, there's a good chance he will be.

"He should also be picked for the Twenty20 World Cup squad, which they are hosting next year."

Sussex remain optimistic of being able to bring Smith back as their second overseas player for Twenty20 cricket next season, subject to him appearing in the West Indies Test side.

"We've worked with him for two years, we know how good he is, and hopefully we'll be able to bring him back," Brooks said.

"We'll be keeping an eye on him and we'll keep our fingers crossed."

The 26-year-old was central to the county's first Twenty20 Cup success in August, scoring a blistering 59 from 26 balls to give Sussex a 63-run win over Somerset in the final.

His performances in 2009 followed a high-impact first season for the Sharks, when he scored 185 runs at an average of 23.12 in the same competition and also took 12 wickets at an average of 24.75.

The West Indian has also starred in the Pro40, where he recently took a quadruple wicket maiden, including a hat-trick, against Nottinghamshire.

T&T under 20’s receives invitation from Manchester United to attend Premier League game
ctntworld.com reports.

The national U-20 team received an unexpected but welcomed gift from none other than, one of England's greatest club's Manchester United today.

The technical staff and team members of the national team received an invitation from the club to attend their premier league game against Arsenal on Saturday at Old Trafford.

The invitation followed a meeting between FIFA VP Jack Warner and the English FA almost one month ago.

Mr. Warner said "I broached the topic with the English FA almost one month ago when we were organizing this tour. The TTFF continues to invest in its youth teams. The boys are on a tour at this time, they will be playing two games in England and then go to Cyprus. But technical know that training can only do so much. It would be preposterous of me to assume that's all it takes to win games. I wanted the boys to see what a sell out international stadium feels like. These boys will be facing Egypt on September 24th to a sell out crowd of 80,000, they must see for themselves what these crowds look and sound like. "

Warner went on to add "far too often, teams ignore the psychological development of players, but international crowds can be quite intimidating. These boys must be prepared for battle, and the TTFF will ensure they have the correct armour."

Mr. Warner then took time away from his schedule to visit Manchester's Football Academy on Tuesday morning, made a quick visit to the home of the world's first football club on his arrival in Sheffield.

Carlisle United will lose the services of on-loan Coventry City midfielder Chris Birchall after the 24-year-old opted for a move to America instead.

The Trinidad & Tobago international joined for a month in November but has made just two appearances.

"We couldn't compete with the deal that he has been offered in America," manager Greg Abbott told the club official website.

"We have to accept that Birchall is moving on."

Birchall, born in Stafford, began his career with Port Vale and attracted the attentions of the Trinidad & Tobago Football Federation when it was learned that his mother was born in Port of Spain.

He then appeared at the 2006 World Cup in Germany where his appearances for Trinidad earned him a move to the Ricoh Arena.

England and Liverpool footballer Steven Gerrard has been arrested following an alleged assault.

Police were called at about 0230 GMT following an incident at a pub in Southport, Merseyside. Six men were detained later in a nearby street.

The men, four from Huyton, one from Formby and one from Litherland, remain in police custody.

A 34-year-old man from Southport was taken to hospital with facial injuries, not thought to be life-threatening.

The incident is alleged to have taken place at the Lounge Inn, on Bold Street.

Four men aged 33, 31, 29 and 19, all from Huyton, a 28-year-old from Formby and an 18-year-old from Litherland were arrested a short time later on nearby Lord Street.

Midfielder Gerrard, 28, is Liverpool captain and scored twice in his team's 5-1 victory over Newcastle on Sunday.

A police spokesman said: "Merseyside Police is investigating an assault that took place in the early hours of Monday December 29 on Bold Street in Southport.

"At around 2.30am this morning officers attended a disturbance at a licensed premises on Bold Street.

"Six men were arrested on suspicion of section 20 assault on Lord Street."

The spokesman added all currently remained in custody.

Gerrard was born and grew up on Huyton's Bluebell Estate.

He started his footballing life playing for Whiston Juniors, before being spotted by a Liverpool scout at the age of eight.

Last month the Premier League star was given the freedom of his home borough of Knowsley in recognition of his contribution to football.

Jones still on road to recovery

Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones has said he is still not fully fit despite scoring twice in the 4-0 victory over West Brom on Saturday.

The Trinidad and Tobago international suffered a knee injury against England in June, and only returned to action for the Black Cats in October.

Jones told BBC Radio Newcastle: "I'm not quite 100% yet, but thankfully I'm getting there.

"I remember how long I was out so hopefully I can continue to progress."

The former Southampton man has also backed his partnership with Djibril Cisse, despite some critics suggesting the duo can't play together.

Cisse was also on the scoresheet in the win over the Baggies at the Stadium of Light and Jones said that proves they can be an effective partnership.

"I think Saturday should answer some of the questions by the way we played," said Jones.

"I can't explain what we have to do or what we should be doing - hopefully the fans can see it on the pitch."

Warriors need a midfield general.
By: Selwyn Melville (Newsday).
[/size]

Two years ago we were the toast of the world, after getting a point from Sweden, having the mighty England on the ropes and threatening for a second round place in Germany 2006. Two years later we are just waiting for the knockout punch to be delivered.

There are some who will claim this statement is unpatriotic. As a commentator I have been called thousands of names and have been around long enough to know when you are looking down the barrel of a shotgun.

Surely we are into the semi-finals of the CONCACAF tournament for South Africa in 2010, but how much will change from what transpired against Bermuda?

National team coach Francisco Maturana has failed us and should seek employment elsewhere. Bertille St Clair who secured our first point in the Germany 2006 campaign, was fired after the defeat to Guatemala, but he got us to the CONCACAF finals, before Leo Beenhakker completed the journey.

Could anyone tell me right now from what we have seen of the Colombian coach that he has the qualities to take us to South Africa two years from now? He took his country to two World Cup Finals, but something seems to be missing from his current endeavour.

It is unthinkable to believe the country that played in the World Cup finals two years ago and from the list of players with many of them still eligible to play, only excuses are given about why they cannot make the team.

They are asking too much of these young players in so short a period. The middle is a disaster and carries no authority to really challenge the competition in the semi-finals.

In Germany, Dwight Yorke controlled the middle and offered more organisation for Beenhakker to work. Carlos Edwards now looks a shadow of himself without that quality support in the middle.

The skipper Aurtis Whitley seems inspired but is not up to the level of a Russell Latapy who can freeze the ball, delay the play, dictate directions and create better options for the players moving forward. We need a ball general in the middle. On paper Yorke is still the best player we have and should be persuaded to make a comeback. His presence is meaningful on the journey and would assist in moulding many of the young players for the future. The coach can teach as much as he wants, but on the field leadership makes a huge difference in the game.

Yorke does not have to go to South Africa, but by then others would have emerged, learning from the best. The defence also lacks experience and you do not want that going into a tournament of this nature. People are experimenting when most of our plans should have been on the table.

Bermuda showed more than anything else how ill prepared we are. Maturana should have used the younger players in a manner which would see them grow into the national team rather than make them “man before time” as we say in Tobago.

I would have had more respect for the Colombian coach if he had given the players from Germany 2006 an opportunity to fail before coming to a conclusion. With excuses flying left right and centre, I am convinced there is another voice in his head so he is unable think straight. We undoubtedly have some young and upcoming talent, but with limited time for preparation experience is needed and the 2006 players would certainly provide that and more.

If there are problems with some of the players, these issues must be ironed out. They have the formula already. Instead we seek to break their spirits and are ready to rip their stripes off and find reasons to unnecessarily make them history. I also believe that outside of the 2006 team there are players who are being overlooked for one reason or another. This view is shared by a greater percentage of the population on the status of the World Cup Campaign

Maturana said recently, he was working with what he was given and his assistant Anton Corneal added that he was taking instructions.

So who is giving the instructions to our coach and his assistant? I truly believe that Maturana is dancing to the beat of another voice. That voice will also see him on a flight back to his country.

I am also forced to think at times the Red, White and Black is a front for an agenda that has nothing to do with country. Probably I say this because I am patriotic and passionate about my country and the Soca Warriors.

But what if it is really true? Then Oh! What a tangled web they weave when first they practise to deceive.
