Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha secretary-general Sat Maharaj is confident the People’s Partnership Government would properly and equitably deliver resources if given a second term in office.
Maharaj said the Kamla Persad-Bissessar-led Government had successfully delivered across the country.
Speaking at the Maha Sabha’s Indian Arrival Day celebrations in Debe yesterday, Maharaj said for the past 50 years all major developments have taken place north of the Caroni River.
“And every time an effort is made to develop the rest of Trinidad and Tobago, there is an outcry. But what is south of the Caroni River? All the oil wells that produce the wealth, the Pitch Lake. So all the wealth from Central and South must go to develop only the North. That is the philosophy of Eric Williams and the PNM,” he said.
Maharaj pointed out the turn of events that occurred when the People’s Partnership Government assumed office.
He said, “I want to point out to you what is taking place in this Debe and Penal catchment. I am saying that within a few years, Debe will be an extension of San Fernando. I want to thank the Prime Minister and her Cabinet for equitably distributing the wealth of this country. All we ask for is equity. Don’t give us more than you give anybody else.”
Maharaj said previous governments have tried to spread the wealth, but failed because of the People’s National Movement (PNM) civil servants planted in all sectors.
The battle has now begun. Any government that gets into office for the full five years, you can’t do anything because the civil servants [lock] you in. Robinson could not last more than five years, Panday couldn’t last more than five years because you got to get past the civil servants who have been planted there by the PNM. They plant two generations of civil servants to block you. So I am saying this Government must get its second five-year to properly deliver,” he said.
Persad-Bissessar, who participated in the Indian Arrival Day procession which ended at Parvati Girls’ College, said her People’s Partnership Government was the only administration to invest in evert part of Trinidad and Tobago.
“Anywhere of the country you go, you will see development taking place. So do not get fooled with the rhetoric that my Government is only interested in developing certain parts of Trinidad and Tobago,” she said.
Persad-Bissessar paid tribute to Maharaj for his determination. She described him as a fearless fighter and warrior. “He has shown us that you must speak when you can and where you can. You must not remain docile and afraid. You are a citizen of this land just like every other citizen,” she said.
Persad-Bissessar presented the Maha Sabha with two cheques totalling $750,000 to offset expenses for the Indian Arrival Day celebrations.
And as he thanked Persad-Bissessar for the financial contribution, Maharaj noted it was not the same value as other sectors have received for hosting similar celebrations. He said the money would go toward the Maha Sabha schools. “All we ask is equity,” he said.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar this afternoon disclosed that she had accepted the resignation of her Tourism Minister Chandresh Sharma. The follow is the statement issued to the media shortly before 3 p.m today -

Statement by the Honourable Prime Minister, Kamla Persad- Bissessar, SC, on the revocation of the appointment of Honourable Minister of Tourism, Chandresh Sharma

I have advised the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, His Excellency, Anthony Carmona, of the decision to revoke the appointment of the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Chandresh Sharma.

This advice follows my decision to accept the resignation earlier submitted by Minister Sharma.

There has been some discussion on the number of times changes have been made in my Cabinet. I say that is a measurement of my commitment to maintaining the high ideals upon which we were elected.

I am not swayed by any other consideration other than that which is right and honourable. Each member of my administration must be mindful that we are held to different, higher standards than ever before, even by those who are our most bitter critics.

There is no privileged escape, no allowance for arrogance, no forgiveness for indiscretion. Those days are gone, such compromise has expired. The responsible leadership which we promised to usher in a dawn of a new era is the new political currency.

My leadership isn’t formed in the mould of loud and angry politicians who feel that shouting and attacking everything is the best way to be heard. But my decisions and policies speak even louder of who I am and what I expect of those around me in government.

The government is stronger than ever because of the tough decisions taken and the population can breathe easier today, confident in the knowledge that value based leadership will never be compromised.

I take this opportunity to recognize Minister Sharma's contributions and service to the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago.

Police probing Chandresh for assault of ex-girlfriend

http://www.guardian.co.tt/news/2014-03-30/police-probing-chandresh-assault-ex-girlfriend

To be a Gov't minister in TNT, you must know how to BEAT !!! woman

Tourism Minister Chandresh Sharma is under investigation by the police for the assault of his former girlfriend. Sacha Singh, the managing director of AMS Biotech Security Concept and AmSure T&T Ltd, who is in her late 20s, met with officers of the St Joseph Police Station on Friday at her Piarco business and gave a statement of Sharma’s alleged physical abuse during an altercation on March 12 at Grand Bazaar. Though a police investigation into such a matter can take as long as six months, the Sunday Guardian learnt that because of the high-profile nature of the matter it is being fast-tracked. ASP Joanne Archie, public information officer of the T&T Police Service, yesterday confirmed that an investigation was being conducted by the police against Sharma: “Statements were recorded and the investigation is in progress.”

Archie said “a charge or charges” may be laid after the investigation. Sharma’s investigation comes days after former minister of the people Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh was fired by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Tuesday, following allegations of disorderly behaviour on board a Caribbean Airlines flight on March 16.

Questions about the child arose

Police were told that Singh met Sharma in the car park of Grand Bazaar, near Toppers around 7.45 pm on March 12. Sharma had agreed to meet Singh at the mall. In the back seat of Singh’s car was a 12-year-old girl and her mother, a schoolteacher. Sharma entered her Mercedes Benz car and sat in the front passenger seat, where questions about the child arose. The child eventually moved and Sharma spotted her. The child called out to Sharma who acknowledged her. Singh began to ask Sharma about maintaining the child. Sharma and the girl’s mother came out of the vehicle arguing. Shortly after, there was a scuffle between Sharma and the woman.During the melee, Sharma urged the woman to stop hitting a Brahmin boy. Singh came out of the car and held on to Sharma’s tie, but was slapped across the face.

Sharma, the police were told, pushed Singh who fell back and hit her head on her car and blacked out for several minutes. After gaining consciousness, Singh said they were checking her pulse. She said she was told that Sharma was putting water on face, forehead and head to revive her. Singh said Sharma kept saying she was fine and told her not to go to the hospital, but instead she should go home and take a shower. Singh called her doctor at St Augustine Private Hospital who told her he was not on duty. She went home and took painkillers. The following day, Singh was examined by Dr Pulchan at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex who diagnosed that she suffered from a mild concussion and haematoma (swelling of the brain). She then reported the incident to Sgt Ogiste at the St Joseph Police Station. Traumatised by the incident, Singh left the country on March 14 and returned on March 25, where the police took a report three days later. The matter is being investigated by Insp Naim Gyan, who refused to comment yesterday when contacted.

Singh: I am pressing charges
Contacted yesterday, Singh said she was pressing charges against Sharma, who she met at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in January 2013. Singh admitted that she shared a relationship with Sharma, stating that she has evidence to back up her claims. “I found out about the child last November by his (Sharma’s) wife. That’s when things started to go downhill with us because when I asked him repeatedly about the child, he kept denying (the child) was his.” She said Sharma had no right to push her down because she brought the little girl to see him. Stating that she had established her business before she met Sharma, Singh, a former Miss T&T contestant, said, “It is not that I am bitter, vindictive or want revenge against him...it’s about living up to your responsibilities and speaking the truth. It’s an innocent child we are speaking about.”

Singh said she could have left the matter, but realised that it could have been far more serious. “I could have died. This should serve as a message to all women that they can stand up and fight men who are abusive.”
She said she was determined to press charges against Sharma because if left unchecked, someone could get killed in the future as a result of his actions. Singh described the incident as an abuse of public office. “The thing is, if you grab a woman’s breast and you get removed and you knock down a woman...same thing.”

Ramesh Maharaj: PM ought to remove him
Yesterday, former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj said on the basis of the PM’s action against Ramadharsingh, the same should apply for Sharma. “An assault is when you attempt to hit someone. If you hit, then it’s assault and battery, which is a criminal offence and would have to answer a charge in the Magistrate’s Court.” Maharaj said Sharma’s report was far worse. “It’s a form of domestic violence because he was friendly with her.” Maharaj said a minister does not have to be charged to be fired, but the charge aggravates the situation. A minister, Maharaj said, must be an exemplar. “The PM ought to remove him...There must be high standards in public life.” Maharaj said an investigation like this should take only a few days. “These matters are simple investigations. So this summary complaint must be filed within six months of the date of the incident.”

Sat maintains it’s a domestic affair
Secretary general of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha said Ramadharsingh’s issue was quite different from Sharma’s. “Ramadharsingh’s incident happened in an aircraft with other passengers who were endangered. This is a different thing—a domestic dispute...lots of people have. One is a domestic affair, and one is public manifestation of bad behaviour. It was a different situation because lots of politicians...they have domestic problems. So that is why I drew the line.” Maharaj maintained that the matter involving Sharma will take its course. Maharaj insists that he was not condoning domestic violence.

Seebaran–Suite: If it is true... it is to be deplored
Women’s activist, chairman of Advocates of Safe Parenthood: Improving Reproductive Equity (Aspire), attorney Lynette Seebaran–Suite said: “If it is true, then really, it is to be deplored because domestic violence is one of the most pervasive crimes society faces.” Seebaran-Suite said she has been trying to wrestle with the problem. “So if we have exemplars in society or people who are supposed to be exemplars committing that kind of violence, then they should face the full brunt of the law.” Seebaran-Suite said anyhow you look at it, “an assault is an assault.”

No response from Sharma, PM
Yesterday, a call made to Sharma’s phone was answered by someone who stated that the minister was attending a function. Another call at 6.30 pm was not responded to. Text messages sent to Sharma’s cell phone at 4.38 pm, 6.37 pm and 6.59 pm were not answered. Sharma also did not respond to questions e-mailed to him. Meanwhile, calls and texts to Persad-Bissessar’s phone went unanswered.

Moonilal eager to finish Tarouba stadium - $185m to fix issues

http://www.guardian.co.tt/news/2013-09-11/moonilal-eager-finish-tarouba-stadium-185m-fix-issues

Years after the Brian Lara Stadium failed to make its original construction deadline, a further $185 million is still needed to fix the stadium before it can be opened to the public.

The stadium was originally intended to be used for the 2007 ICC World Cup and a whopping $1.1 billion has already been spent on it. But even after it is eventually completed, it is unlikely that international or regional matches will be played there, as Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal yesterday said it might be used instead for school cricket.

Speaking at the Naparima Bowl, San Fernando, yesterday, Moonilal said Cabinet had finally approved the resumption of work at the controversial stadium, which was started in 2005 with a projected cost of $500 million. “We went to Cabinet a few months ago with a proposal concerning the Brian Lara Stadium, and the Cabinet had given the okay to continue the work,” he said.

“There are some remedial works there to be done, as well as some re-engineering of the facility. I think the amount of money is in the vicinity of $185 million to continue that work. We are hoping to at least continue that work. “We are very keen to finish the project because of the amount of money already spent—$1.1 billion—and it needs another $185 million, in a facility that at the end of the day we may hand it over to the Secondary Schools Cricket League.”

Despite Cabinet’s approval, no funding has yet been allocated to continue the project, which Moonilal said would be finished before the People’s Partnership term ends in 2015. “We are looking for a source of funding to complete it...I believe that by 2015 or thereabouts, we should be in a position to complete and have the facility and at least have some type of games taking place,” he said.

Although the project started under the People’s National Movement (PNM) government, the People’s Partnership (PP) has been subjected to heavy criticism for the delays in completing the stadium, initially intended to be a state-of-the-art facility for the country’s athletes. The Urban Development Corporation (Udecott), which is overseeing the project, was also criticised for sanctioning the hosting of Carnival parties and sporting events in the car park earlier this year and late 2012.

However, Moonilal yesterday defended the delays, saying a proper survey of the stadium had to be done before work continued. “We could not have gone full speed ahead and do anything, because we had to do a comprehensive assessment,” he said. “If we did not do the comprehensive assessment, the very media would have asked for the technical reports. So we had to do all our assessments and get international consultants, which we did.

“That also cost money. So in doing the assessment, it cost money as well. Now we are in a position where Cabinet has approved a plan.” Upon picking up duties at Udecott in 2011, chairman Jearlean John announced that an investigation would be launched to determine whether contractors were still liable to repair infrastructural defects at the stadium. Among the issues were a leaking media tower, broken pavilion seats, a flooded gym and an improperly constructed VIP lounge.

The stadium, started in 2005, was designed as part of the proposed $850 million Tarouba Complex on 180 acres of farm land. It was to include an aquatic centre, Olympic-sized cycling velodrome, indoor gymnasium, academy for athletes and a spacious car park along with the Brian Lara Stadium and cricket academy. In April 2011, however, Sports Minister Anil Roberts announced that those plans had been scrapped and only cricket would be played at the stadium

Legal letters fly in support of AG’s wife

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/Harassed-by-journalist-222908841.html

Story Created: Sep 8, 2013 at 11:16 PM ECT

Legal letters are flying fast to prevent publication of any story on Attorney General Anand Ramlogan and his wife Nalini.
Like her husband, Nalini Ramlogan is now threatening to take the Express and reporter Anika Gumbs to court should “falsities” be published about her.
Attorney Jagdeo Singh, who is representing Mrs Ramlogan, wrote Express editor-in-chief Omatie Lyder last Saturday stating that he had been instructed by his client “to take all such action as may be necessary to protect her good name and to prevent her from being brought into odium and disrepute”.
Singh’s letter follows a similar one from senior counsel Pamela Elder on September 5 on behalf of the AG, threatening legal action against the Express should “falsities” be published about him.
These legal letters have been issued as Gumbs pursues the facts behind certain information given to her by sources.
Mrs Ramlogan, like her husband, is also alleging that Gumbs posed as a police officer twice, first at Palmiste, where the Ramlogans live, and then at the home of Mrs Ramlogan’s parents in Barrackpore, where Gumbs had gone in pursuit of the story last week.
Gumbs has again been reminded in the lawyer’s letter that impersonating a police officer could land her in jail along with a fine.
In response to Mrs Ramlogan’s allegations, Gumbs yesterday vehemently denied that she identified herself as a friend of the Ramlogan family when she approached Mrs Ramlogan for an interview last week.
In fact, Express records show that Gumbs was identified as a journalist by the Ramlogans’ domestic helper, Goomatie Ragbir, who had worked with Gumbs at the Guardian South Bureau and Gumbs identified herself as “Anika” to Mrs Ramlogan.
The Express can also prove that Mrs Ramlogan never asked Gumbs to leave the premises where she lives as alleged in Singh’s letter.
In fact, at the end of the interview, Gumbs told Mrs Ramlogan: “Okay, have a good day,” to which she replied: “You too.”
Further, Express records show that no interview was ever conducted with Mrs Ramlogan’s neighbour Abdel Mohammed, who, according to Singh’s letter, is alleging that Gumbs impersonated a police officer attached to San Fernando Police Station when she approached him.
Attorney Singh also wrote “that any publication by you of matters relating to these falsities (including the publication of pre-action letters) would result in legal proceedings being instituted against both your newspaper and Ms Gumbs-Sandiford. In the circumstances, I ask you to note that I have my client’s firm instructions to take all such action as may be necessary to protect her good name and to prevent her from being brought into odium and disrepute”.

Chirlane McCray: From Gay Trailblazer to Politician's Wife

http://www.essence.com/2013/05/09/politicians-wife-chirlane-mccray/

In 1979 Chirlane McCray was a lesbian, out loud and proud. She said so herself, in a groundbreaking essay in ESSENCE simply called "I Am a Lesbian." That article was a revelation, perhaps the first time a Black gay woman had spoken so openly and honestly about her sexuality in a Black magazine. "I discovered my preference for women early," she wrote, "before getting locked into a traditional marriage."

Now, 34 years later, the same Chirlane McCray, 58, is happily immersed in a "traditional marriage." Her husband, Bill de Blasio, is running in one of the most fiercely contested Democratic mayoral primaries in decades, and his wife of 19 years and mother of their two teenage children is front and center in his campaign as strategist, confidante and political partner.

So how did this self-possessed lesbian turn into a seemingly classic political wife? McCray returns "home" to the pages of ESSENCE, and the audience who embraced her so many years ago, to talk about life's unexpected twists and turns, the fluidity of love, dirty politics and her 180-degree turn.

ESSENCE: Why did you write that first essay?

CHIRLANE McCRAY: Because in 1979, I thought it important to dispel the myth that there are no gay Black people, that Black people just didn't do that sort of thing. That article was my way of telling Black women across the country, "You are not alone."

ESSENCE: How was it received?

McCRAY: I remember how excited everyone was and how I was celebrated. I'm proud that at such a young age I was brave enough to go to ESSENCE and fight to write that article. I felt positive about what I'd done.

ESSENCE: How did you first meet Bill?

McCRAY: In 1991 I was working in the press office at the [NYC] Commission on Human Rights and was sent over to City Hall. I was wearing West African–inspired clothing and a nose ring, and Bill says he had the love-at-first-sight experience. I did note what a good-looking guy he was and that he was funny and smart and made other people laugh.

ESSENCE: Were you worried about him being a man—and White?

McCRAY: All I could think about was, He's six years younger than me!

ESSENCE: So how did you go from being a lesbian to falling in love with a man?

McCRAY: By putting aside the assumptions I had about the form and package my love would come in. By letting myself be as free as I felt when I went natural.

ESSENCE: Still, was it strange being with a man, after so long?

McCRAY: I came out at 17. I hadn't really dated any men. I thought, Whoa, what is this? But I also didn't think, Oh, now I'm attracted to men. I was attracted to Bill. He felt like the perfect person for me. For two people who look so different, we have a lot in common. We are a very conventional, unconventional couple.

ESSENCE: How did you tell Bill about your past?

McCRAY: Other people told him in the beginning. Then at some point I gave him the article and said, "Look, this is who I am and you should read this." It shook him up. But he didn't show it. He was cool about it.

ESSENCE: Do you consider yourself bisexual?

McCRAY: I am more than just a label. Why are people so driven to labeling where we fall on the sexual spectrum? Labels put people in boxes, and those boxes are shaped like coffins. Finding the right person can be so hard that often, when a person finally finds someone she or he is comfortable with, she or he just makes it work. As my friend Vanessa says, "It's not whom you love; it's that you love."

ESSENCE: Are you still attracted to women?

McCRAY: I'm married, I'm monogamous, but I'm not dead and [laughs] Bill isn't either. I know my husband loves me fiercely and passionately. I know he supports me and will always stand up for me.

ESSENCE: How did you feel when your ESSENCE article from 1979 was leaked online and then the New York Post printed a cartoon of you and your husband in bed?

McCRAY: I thought the article would have [come out] sooner or later. I was rather dismissive of the whole thing. But then that cartoon! What the New York Post did was just really nasty. It was racist, ignorant and crude.

ESSENCE: If Bill gets elected, what kind of first lady of New York will you be—a Michelle Obama?

McCRAY: It's too early to say what I will work on, but I'll be my own person. I'd like to be out in the city every day listening to what people are saying, and asking about what they need. I'd like to inspire others by doing as much as I can to help people who are trying to make a better life for themselves and others.

Fuad: Guards must pay for stolen machine

http://www.guardian.co.tt/news/2013-08-22/fuad-guards-must-pay-stolen-machine

Minister of Health Dr Fuad Khan said yesterday that security at San Fernando General Hospital would be held accountable for the $.5 million ultrasound machine that went missing two weeks ago from the operating theatre on the second floor of the new wing. He said management had a system in place under which the security contractors, once found culpable, would be responsible for paying for the missing device. “If anything goes missing they have to pay for it,” he said in a telephone interview.

He said it was also necessary to find out who stole the machine in the first place. Acting CEO of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA), Dr Shivanan Gopeesingh, said Innovative Security Technologies and privately hired security guards manned the hospital. Contacted yesterday, managing director of the security agency, Keith Carrington, said he had no comment, adding that the police would have to investigate.

Gopeesingh confirmed on Monday that the machine had been missing for the last two weeks and an official report had been made to the San Fernando police. Yesterday, Khan said he had a plan in mind to deal with such thefts in future. He said he was looking into implementing radio frequency identification devices (RFID), which are tags with bar codes connected to a networked system, which would track all hospital machinery.

The minister said another possibility is putting the devices on identification badges of members of staff who work in “sensitive areas,” to determine when things leave the compound, through which exit and possibly with whom. Items to be outfitted with the RFID would include pharmaceuticals as well. “In doing so we can track when and where items entered and left the system,” he said.

He said the RFID measure was not in response to the disappearance of the ultrasound machine, as he had been looking into the new technology for some time now. He said, however, that the missing machine has added a sense of urgency to the proposed plan. He said another consideration would be to set up a security camera system along the corridors of the hospital.

Gopeesingh said CCTV cameras were already set up at strategic points in the hospital, but none near the scene of the incident, in the new wing. He added that the back exit of the new wing was also not well lit, and there was no camera there, so if the machine was stolen it was by someone who knew the hospital well.

When asked how a machine of such a considerable size could be moved around without anybody raising an alarm, Gopeesingh said the machine was portable and regularly moved throughout the hospital to access patients. “If you see a medical person moving it around the building, it’s not out of the ordinary,” he said. He added that several medical personnel would have access to the operating theatre, including three shifts of doctors, nurses and attendants.

Khan said instances of disappearing equipment were normal, but this was the first time something so big has gone missing. Gopeesingh, too, said it was not normal for a machine that size to disappear, adding in his 34 years at the hospital this was a first. Even though the machine was portable, Gopeesingh described it as “sizeable” and could not fathom how it could leave the building undetected. He added that it would have taken more than one person to move it, and a pickup truck to transport it, as it could not fit in a car trunk.

He said it could also be possible the machine was still in the hospital building. When asked if tabs were kept on the machine as it was moved about from room to room, Gopeesingh said it was mandatory for personnel to sign a book each time.

Ultrasound machine vanishes from SFGH

Wednesday, August 21 2013

An ultrasound machine valued half a million dollars was stolen from the San Fernando General Hospital recently.

Hospital sources say the machine was last used on August 8.

The following day when the staff went to use the machine it was discovered missing. A search was carried out but it was not found.

The ultrasound machine, according to hospital sources, is a portable type which was wheeled around and used by anaesthesiologists in the operating theatre at the South hospital.

A report of the theft was made yesterday to the San Fernando Police Station.

Senior Supt Cecil Santana of the Southern Division and Det Insp Williams visited the hospital and conducted investigations. Williams is continuing the probe.
