Machel James of Fatima College and Ashley Alonzo of Providence Girls High School were named as the Secondary Schools Football League “Male and Female” Most Valuable Players of the 2005 season.
Both players collected their accolades at the SSFL’s end-of-year awards at the Rudrunath Learning Resource Centre, Couva, on Wednesday.
James, a defender played a key part of a dominant Fatima team that lifted the North Zone Inter-Col title and went on to capture its first national Inter-Col title in 26 years at the expense of St Augustine Senior Comprehensive, 2-1 in the final.
He was later rewarded with a pick on the SSFL team which went to Jamaica on a four-match tour in December.
In addition to James, a member of the Superstar Rangers/Tobago United club his Fatima team-mates Emmanuel Joseph and Makesi Lewis were also included in the SSFL “Top Five” Male players.
Elton John of St Augustine Senior Comprehensive and Akil De Freitas of St Anthony’s College were the other two players.
Alonzo, a goal-scoring machine for Providence also had an outstanding season as she led her school to a sweep of all the major titles in the North Zone and at a National level.
Alonzo also made it a fourth straight year that a player from the North Zone had copped the women’s award following in the foot steps of Malick trio Anastasia Prescott (2004) Alania Burgin (2003) and Nadia James (2002).
The other “Top Five” female players included Tricia Lawrence (St George’s College), Ayanna Russell (El Dorado Senior Secondary), Lindsay Murray (Providence Girls) and Dernelle Mascall (Moruga Composite).
