THE police detective suspected of kidnapping foreign used car dealer Ramesh Mahabir was expected to be charged with the crime last night.
The officer, who is attached to the Guard and Emergency Branch, along with a Bobo Shanti Rastafarian is expected to appear before a Port of Spain magistrate today.
The constable who is currently on suspension was arrested at his Valsayn home at the weekend.
Mahabir was kidnapped at gunpoint from outside his business place R&R Imports on Friday around 6 p.m.
He was found abandoned in a forested area in the hills around Wharf Trace, Maracas Valley, St Joseph on Monday.
Mahabir is the fourth person to have been kidnapped for this year, compared to 15 for the same period last year, a drop of 73.33 per cent.
In a statement yesterday the Ministry of National Security refuted claims that foreign used car dealers were being targeted.
The ministry said of the four kidnap victims this year, one was a used car company employee, (Mahabir), the son of a funeral director and a fabricator.
