‘Little Tobago’ confines the ‘Eastern Lions’.
By: Joel Villafana.
Tobago United stole the headlines as the boys from the sister isle stepped up their game a few notches and battled tooth and nail to earn a 2-2 draw with the mighty Joe Public at the Larry Gomes Stadium.
The ‘Eastern Lions’ must be still in a quandary as to what transpired in a game Coach Mike Mc Commie and his men were expecting to win easily
However, the ‘Tobago Boys’ found themselves in an unfamiliar scenario, as they took the lead in the 38th minute—when Noel Williams made a run down the flank and whipped a lovely cross, which Sherwin Lee jumped and headed into the back of the net.
Tobago United with a surprise lead at the half—but Joe Public got back on even terms as Gary Glasgow collected a through ball and guided it home—the game tied at 1-1.
Glasgow completed a double in the 88th minute when he latched on to a goal mouth scramble and sent Joe Public into a 2-1 lead—the ‘Eastern Lions’ must have felt they would take away maximum points—but Peter Granville’s men was not willing to allow this one to slip away.
In added on injury time—in almost similar fashion to their opening goal—Noel Williams made another run down the flank, and whipped another good cross—and this time it was Dwayne Jack that rose to head it home—the Tobagonians were in their glee celebrating a hard fought point—and a well deserved 2-2 draw with the mighty ‘Eastern Lions’.
Rangers dim Stars light.
If that result was not a big enough shock, the second game at the Larry Gomes Stadium produced and even bigger eye opener, as Superstar Rangers produced a brilliant display to shoot down the high-flying North East Stars 3-1. A late double by Josimar Belgrave had the ‘Stars’ looking dim at the end of ninety minutes.
Akeil Glasgow gave Rangers a 1-0 lead as early as the 4th minute—but Marvin Oliver brought things back on even terms with a 33rd minute strike. However, Belgrave came on and turned things upside down—and handed North East their 2nd straight defeat, this after coach Miguel Hackett’s men were leading the table, they now find themselves back in 3rd position jostling for supremacy.
‘Connection, Jabloteh stalemate’
At the Ato Boldon Stadium, it was another keenly contested match between rivals San Juan Jabloteh and W Connection—but in the end there was no separating the two teams and the match ended 1-1.
W Connection actually took the lead in the 21st minute—with an Earl Jean strike. But Jabloteh struck back in the 55th as prolific striker Anthony Wolfe put away an opportunity that tied the game—and that’s how it stayed to the end.
The action anticipated in Couva actually took place in the 2nd match—as Defence Force pulled something special out of their hat and punished Starworld Strikers 5-1.
Odelle Armstrong with a brace (31’) and (48’). Christian Baptiste, Kevon Carter and Sean Narcis added an item each, while Strikers got a consolation item in the 75th through Kester Cornwall.
Down at the Palo Seco Recreation Ground, Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA Fire continued in their winning ways as they ran past United Petrotrin 3-0. Randanfah Abu Bakr gave the ‘Men from Morvant’ a 1-0 lead on the stroke of the half time whistle. Caledonia benefited from an own goal in the 71st minute, taking a 2-0 lead. And in the 83rd the Firemen were awarded a penalty and Kendall Jagdeosingh converted to give Jamal Shabazz coached team a comfortable 3-0 win—as they seek to climb up the table.
