Offers come pouring in for donkey Jack

Jack the donkey has won the hearts of scores of Express readers at home and abroad.

Yesterday's story of him being put up for sale has led to a flood of calls to his owners. In fact, there were so many calls that Sumintra Ramsaran had to give up trying to cook lunch. She eventually sat by the phone taking calls all day.

Many wanted to buy Jack. Others wanted the family to keep the donkey, since he only needed a vet and "soft music" to stop his braying and biting. Some wanted to know if Jack was alcoholic, given that he drank beer.

Jack is four years old, still a baby in donkey years. The oldest known donkey is said to be 60 years old.

Internet Express readers also endeared themselves to Jack.

One reader commented: "This was a wonderful story to read, almost like a folktale of some sort...Too bad that our sweet T&T has changed from this laid back wonderful life, only if we still had small problems as this."

Sumintra and her husband Vishnu placed an advertisement in the Express classified section two weeks ago, offering Jack for sale. It was done with a heavy heart, since he was the family's pet and "pit-bull", but grew too big and bad to be around the children, and was subsequently taken from the family's home in Couva to their farm in Ecclesville, Rio Claro,

Sumintra Ramsaran said yesterday that she had to defend Jack's drinking.

"He's not alcoholic. It was Christmas and we gave him beer for fun. It just happened that he likes it."

She said that the people who wanted to buy Jack have been invited to the farm this weekend. But she warned that since Jack knew nothing of his impending sale, no one should offer him food.

The price is non-negotiable-$5,000.

She joked, "We might even raise the price. Remember he is now famous, and you have to pay for celebrity."

Ah sure Jack is better beer drinking company than some of the characters ah had to put up with in the past.
