WASA’S fourth win of the 2006 TSTT Super League season came at just the right time, as the current league runners-up trounced league leaders Police 3-1 on their home pitch, the WASA ground in St Joseph yesterday.
With a match in hand, WASA is now on 12 points, three behind Police, and in prime position to take over the top spot.
Police began with its usual attacking style and this yielded the customary goal as Kevin Morang put them ahead in the 12th minute.
Fresh off a 1-0 defeat to Couva Players United at the Couva Junior Secondary Ground on Sunday, Wasa was determine not to go further adrift and struck back almost immediately as Alvin Beharry slotted in a 13th minute equaliser.
When Marvin Joseph put WASA 2-1 ahead, the balance had shifted and Steven Pierre cemented the result with an 81st minute strike that killed the match off as a contest.
Crab Connection, the league’s third placed team, made the most of Police’s slip as they too came within two points with a 5-1 beating of Couva Players United at the San Juan Senior Comprehensive ground.
Warren Butler’s 10th-minute opener for Crab set the pace but Couva, a long way from home, cheekily retorted with a 13th-minute Quammie Knights equaliser. Knights, one would remember, helped Couva shock WASA on Sunday, as he scored the match’s only goal.
A share of the points was not on the cards for Couva, as Butler quickly restored the one-goal advantage for Crab with a 19th minute strike, before Rennie Britto scored the first of his two in the 33rd minute to make it 3-1 at half time.
Before Britto completed his double in the second-half, Couva was awarded a 63rd minute penalty, for which Steve Meijias claimed responsibility. The opportunity, however, went begging as his strike was off the target.
Britto helped Crab overcome the scare with a 69th minute goal before Brian Wallace put in Crab’s fifth to complete the rout.
Elsewhere, Club TSTT and M&M Harvard played out a well contested stalemate at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, while Plipdeco Caroni beat House of Dread 3-0 with goals from Shurland David (21st), Dwayne Charles (40th), Jessie de Four (57th).
And Leandro Williams, with a 34th minute goal, proved to be the hero as Angostura 1976 F.C Phoenix slipped past Defence Force. Matches continue on Sunday.
