Quick report from the competition!!

Organisation was pretty good, with teams being met at the airport and carried to Turtle Beach Hotel. Media conference began a little behind schedule, but was well run.

Competition was due to start at 9 am, but due to heavy rain on friday night, the "pitch" couldn't be prepared until saturday morning.

Again, organisation was pretty good with 6 teams provided with different T shirts as uniforms. Teams were from Antigua, Barbados, Sagicor, Sancho's All stars, 2 teams from Tobago and, I think, a Bmobile team.

With $15,000 up for grabs, competition was fierce. Barbados were supposed to be favourites as they sent an experienced beach soccer team. The other teams weren't even sure about the rules at first!! Teams had to evolve tactics as they played as normal football tactics such as pass and move were not possible.

Sancho's team had to draught in some last minute local players to bolster their team which included Sancho, Darren Lewis and Leonson Lewis.

Barbados seemed particularly vexed when they lost to Sancho's with their manager actually confronting the Sancho's players. What made it worse was that she was a woman!!

Sancho's team went unbeaten in their 5 matches, despite playing every other match in the early afternoon sun.

Despite being unbeaten, they then had to play local team, Black Rock in the semi finals which they eventually won on penalties. Barbados were beaten in the second semi by the other Tobago team.

Sancho's All Stars won the final. The final and semis were hotly contested and there was a good crowd in attendance. Special mention to the referees who did a good job in the hot sun.

When presented with the trophy, Sancho praised the organisers and said he believed next year would attract even more teams. He then said that $3,000 of the prize money would be donated back to BagoSports.

All in all, it was a nice tournament and well worth attending. The football was exciting, as the uneven sand made passing difficult and resulted in the ball behaving unpredictably. Its not football, so maybe Beach Soccer is a fair name!!

Warner supports beach soccer.
T&T Newsday Reports.

FIFA DEVELOPMENT Officer, Daryll Warner is positive that the Caribbean has exceptional facilities for beach soccer to thrive.

Warner made these remarks when he addressed candidates at the closing ceremony of a refereeing beach soccer course in the Cayman Islands on Monday.

Warner felt that beach soccer has a great opportunity to find a permanent home in the Caribbean.

“The potential of Beach Soccer in the Caribbean region is immense, our coastlines are pristine and known worldwide. While this sport is still in its infancy, we have the ability to tap into something great. The possibilities are endless,” stated Warner.

The FIFA development officer commended the Cayman Islands for their excellent Beach Soccer facilities and praised the island’s loyal supporters for embracing the newest format of the game.

Warner added, “With coastline that features some of the world’s best beaches and a population of roughly 45,436, that includes more than 4,000 footballers according to the last FIFA count, Cayman Islands certainly has a huge potential when it comes to beach soccer.”

He reiterated the need for proper referees and coaches of beach soccer as well as teaching the rules, skills and tactics of the game.

FIFA beach soccer refereeing instructor, Raveino Massimo was satisfied with the feedback and evaluation received at the refereeing course.

Massimo revealed, “Considering that for most participants beach soccer was totally new, I was impressed by how quickly they got familiar with the beach soccer laws of the game and improved their level of refereeing during the festival.”

Head of the Cayman Islands Football Association, Jeffery Webb was also pleased with the participation at the course and saw it as a starting point for the development of beach soccer across the entire region.

“The information and knowledge shared with the experts was very useful and will help us enormously in our endeavours to raise awareness of this young and dynamic sport in the Caribbean region,” stated Webb.

The first official FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2005.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Florida takes Bago beach football crown

Florida takes Bago beach football crown
By Clayton Clarke (T&T Guardian)

Florida Beach Football Club captured the second annual Bago Sports Beach Football tournament, whipping Stokely Vale 5-3 at Turtle Beach, Plymouth in the final on Sunday. Florida’s captain Oscar Gill netted the winner to give his team the US$10,000 first prize. The visitors showed superior skills on the sandy surface although Stokely Vale, backed by home supporters, put up a brave show in an exciting match played under flood lights. Florida had earlier thrashed Royality Men of Lambeau 10-6, while Stokely Vale got past Guyana’s Red Jaguars 4-2, in the semifinals.

Gill described the outcome as a great feeling. He said: “Tobago has great players. It was very difficult to win this game.” He added his side’s tactical experience in the beach format was instrumental in victory. Chief executive officer of Bago Sport Kyle Lequay said the level of play by the Florida team should serve as an inspiration to local players. “We are glad that Tobago can have the experience of seeing the players of the Florida team. We hope that the local boys would aspire to play at their level and aim towards representing T&T at FIFA Beach Football World Cup like many of the Florida players,” he said

This year’s tournament was played over two days and saw an increase in the number of teams to ten. “Last year we had only regional teams but this year we invited Florida.  We also changed the layout to create a better atmosphere and had international FIFA-trained beach football referees.  We also advertised more this year and increased the prize money from TT $15,000 to US$10,000.”

RESULTS
Finals: Florida beat Stokely Vale: 5-3 (Prize US$10,000)
Semis: Florida bt Royality 10-6; Stokely Vale bt Red Jaguars (Guyana) 4-2.

AWARDS
MVP: Oscar Gill (Florida)
Most Goals: Oscar Gill (Florida)
Best Goal: Ansil Campbell (Stokely Vale)
Best Goal Keeper: Lewis Forde (Stokely Vale)
