Rangers challenge Soca Warriors: Beat us and we pay TT$100,000; Fenwick mum.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Fenwick challenged by Richard Ferguson

Terminix La Horquetta Rangers managing director Richard Ferguson has put TT$100,000 on the table for Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Senior Team head coach Terry Fenwick. All Fenwick has to do to cash in, is lead his Soca Warriors to victory against the Pro League outfit.

The Rangers offer follows a protracted stand-off between both camps, as Ferguson has consistently refused to release his players to the national team outside of the mandatory Fifa international match window.

Rangers, coached by Dave ‘Hoghead’ Quamina, employ a star-studded roster with over a dozen players who have national youth or senior team experience including: Willis Plaza, Ataulla Guerra, Keron ‘Ballpest’ Cummings, Aikim Andrews, Isaiah Lee, Kadeem Corbin, Akeem Roach, Tyrone Charles, Jodel Brown, Yohannes Richardson, Kishun Seecharan and Nathaniel James.

Fenwick has boasted about results against makeshift local opposition, even as he pleaded with Fifa-appointed normalisation committee chairman Robert Hadad for more testing warm-up matches.

On Saturday, the Soca Warriors pummelled a Tobago combined team, dubbed the Orange XI, by eight goals to nil. Orange XI had their first training session three days before facing the National Senior Team, which is preparing to face Guyana in its opening Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifier on 25 March.

Ferguson suggested that Rangers can give Fenwick’s charges a much better workout and he wagered TT$100,000 on the outcome. The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) does not have to spend a cent.

“Rangers want to assist the National Team in its preparations and we feel that we can best do this by playing the team a practice game,” Ferguson told Wired868, “so the National Team coach Terry Fenwick can see our players in action and he can select them to play in future games for Trinidad and Tobago.”

Ferguson, who unsuccessfully contested the post of TTFA president in 2019, said he has asked Fenwick for a game since last November. So far, the offer has not been accepted.

“We have spoken with Robert Hadad, Gary Griffith and Adrain Romain requesting the game,” said Ferguson, a chartered accountant and director at Terminix Trinidad. “We have also written them officially. Romain did mention that he wanted money, so we said we will put up $100,000 winner take all.

“We still have not had any positive response from them. We played Police on Saturday and won 2-0, we have also played Central FC and won 7-1 and AC Port of Spain and won 5-0.

“I have also heard that the National Team is trying to play Police FC and Defence Force but still no game for Rangers…”

Men’s National Senior team manager Adrian Romain confirmed that they have received Rangers’ offer but said it was still being ‘discussed’.

“There have been discussions around the game but the final decision lies with the head coach,” Romain told Wired868, “and he will also have to have it cleared with the TTFA authorities, which is the normalisation committee.”

Romain said the Warriors are in the process of ‘finalising the final leg of preparations ahead of the Guyana match, which may involve an overseas camp’.

Trinidad and Tobago lost their only international outing under Fenwick to date by a joint-national record scoreline of 7-0 to the United States in January. The normalisation committee has failed to arrange requested follow-up friendlies against Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Warriors have otherwise played more than a half dozen exhibition games against makeshift local opposition.

Practice game or not, Ferguson stressed his ‘greatest commitment to the National Team of Trinidad and Tobago and by extension the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA)’ and said he is ‘ready to assist them in any way possible’.

Ferguson’s commitment does not extend to allowing his players to train outside of the specified periods allowed by Fifa—a rule that is generally followed by foreign clubs but relaxed by local teams.

Ironically, Fenwick often forbade his players from attending national training sessions while he was head coach at San Juan Jabloteh.

Ferguson said his club’s board of directors felt ‘it was not prudent’ to release players outside of the mandated Fifa match window because:

‘We expect to be playing in a league in April 2021 with significant prize money and it is very important that we prepare for this league vigorously. Therefore, we need to have full access to all of our players to compete effectively.’

‘Our coaches have developed an extensive training, nutrition and fitness programme for our players for the upcoming competitions and, as a result, the absence of key players for such a long time would affect the plans of the club adversely. In addition, our players have been training together for over two years and they are very fit.’

Fenwick has been offered the chance to test the fitness and abilities of the Rangers employees in a practice game, which is exactly what he claimed to be doing with Tobago’s players on the weekend.

The Warriors head coach admitted to selecting several foreign-based players based on YouTube footage for his last friendly against the United States, while his player pool to face Guyana includes young men who he has not seen in the flesh and are receiving little to no senior team playing time with their respective clubs.

Whether Fenwick believes Rangers deserve parity with overseas clubs is another question.

Ferguson asked the Warriors head coach not to blacklist his players.

“We are also certain that this decision by the club [not to release players outside the Fifa match window] will not prejudice the selection of Rangers players on the national team in the future,” stated Ferguson, in a letter to TTFA national teams director Richard Piper on 24 February 2021, “and should any of the club’s players be selected for the future games, they would be released as per Fifa regulations. And we consider it an honour for our players to represent the country.”

Romain said he could not say whether any Rangers players are in Fenwick’s player pool to face Guyana on 25 March and Puerto Rico on 28 March.

Well, look at that.
"as they may have been the only guys training as no MEN club team was available."

I stand corrected, there were snr clubs available. Offers to help/assist and financial support even made.

Thoughts :
Reminds me of a time my team played Provincial University champs a practice match before they went to University National championships. Organized by our club founder who played for that team. We won the game. After the game, the then coach Harry Hus, sat down with our coach (Rugged Tom) and myself  and we discussed why that score-line happened. We exchanged ideas and plans for the following week before they left. They won the Nationals, 1976. Our founder(from TT) was a member of that winning team, as well as one of my ex-high school teammate(ended up playing professionally in Greece and also another provincial U18 teammate (ended up playing the ass, and becoming rich - i ain't ask).   ;D
https://stingers.ca/hall_of_fame/inductee.php?id=81

Mr Hus did a similar exercise before his Provincials in '79, we gave them 5 - I scored 3  ;D -, but unfortunately they lost at Nationals.

As taught to me by Mr Murray and Rugged.
A practice game is not about competition and winning, it's about bonding, learning, evaluating, executing and exchanging ideas. Otherwise why bother. If either coaches and all players know everything, then any practice match is a waste, nothing learned and is just a foolhardy exercise, as it may cause more harm than good, with dissension and injuries.

add: my thoughts on the issue of release of local players for training. Why release players outside the window, when the actual competition comes around it has been proven that most if not all your players are not going to be selected. Due to recall of more technical higher league players (even if they not aware of your system and training strategies). Then both Club and National team suffer.

I find that is chupidness, donate or don’t donate. Match or no match. Don’t see the point. Plus, yuh not releasing players cause, yuh paying the salaries, yuh have big competition coming up for yuh to win funds, but yuh giving way the money if yuh get practice game. Then what is the point.  I woulda take the money first, then the game and then take the players I want whenever he send them. Setta pissin contest and everybody just wettin each other, and drowning the Lil ppl.

Ridiculous offer. But will FIFA even allow a national team to play on a wager?  That is the start of another corrupt process, but who knows more about corruption than FIFA!
Never, never, ever give up! Go T&T Warriors!

How yuh mean ? Didn't England utilize some funds and give we a practice game with their BIG name club players to get WC vote ? and was it Kuwait i think load up CFU with envelopes (well that was illegal). Recently a amateur team went by the Name of Mexico to give Haiti a run/help out. I think NC/Coach/manager/govt/NT players and potentials were in a even more win-win situation, opportunity to thief money and make another bachanal issue and event on a platter.

Richard Ferguson: Be reasonable.
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express).

Richard Ferguson, the former Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) presidential candidate and current Terminix La Horquetta Rangers club owner, feels misunderstood.

Ferguson has said that contrary to perception, he is willing to release his footballers to the national team as far ahead as 10 days before Trinidad and Tobago’s World Cup qualifier against Guyana, in the Dominican Republic.

“We want to make the players available, but there must be some sort of communications and negotiations,” stated Ferguson. “If they want we can negotiate and I can suggest take them for 10 days before the game. That is acceptable.”

National team head coach Terry Fenwick, like his predecessor Dennis Lawrence, has complained several times about Ferguson not releasing Rangers players for training sessions.

Yesterday, Ferguson assured the Express that he would release La Horquetta Rangers players to the T&T set-up were the national team to leave for the Dominican Republic, even two weeks before its March 25 qualifier,

Ferguson continued: “I am very willing. But they can’t take them for eight months. We are paying our players every month for three years (now). You can’t expect to take a man’s staff for eight months. It’s like we are paying them and they are working in another company,” adding, “Eight months is way too long.” Effort to contact National team director Richard Piper, team manager Adrian Romain and national coach Fenwick for a response proved futile up to press time. Ferguson felt there is a lack of respect for local professional clubs when it comes to international football rules, but foreign clubs are not treated with similar disdain.

“We are not doing anything wrong. We are following FIFA rules which state a club only has to release players to national teams five days before a full international and three days before a friendly during a FIFA window,” cited Ferguson.

The Rangers boss revealed that some $7.5 million has been invested in Rangers players over the last three years and he had to protect his club’s interest. He revealed that Rangers footballers train twice a day and have a proper nutritional programme.

“We pay our players straight through for three years. Whether there is coronavirus, whether there is a league or no league, they are being paid,” Ferguson re-emphasised.

He further added that Rangers having warm-up matches against the national team is nothing new and that his recent call for a $100,000 winner-takes-all match against the national team was a way of helping the cash-strapped senior men’s team, while getting a competitive warm-up for his players.

If able to get permission to allow 1,000 fans into his La Horquetta venue at $100 a head, Ferguson indicated he will also donate those funds and any television advertising revenue earned to the national men’s team as well.

“Its not a bet. It’s a performance incentive and my team has the same incentive. They would get a performance-based bonus and if the national team wins, they will also get a bonus. We are trying to generate some funding to help the national team,” contended Ferguson.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

...

Not much argument on that. It's partially the result of treating the rules elastically. And of persistently playing in grey areas.

Fenwick snubs Rangers’ challenge, Warriors whip Police FC 4-1 with three late goals.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Senior Team head coach Terry Fenwick has turned down the chance to play local Pro League club Terminix La Horquetta Rangers for a TT$100,000 bonus, according to Rangers managing director Richard Ferguson.

Team manager Adrian Romain told Wired868 last night that Fenwick’s position on the Rangers warm-up game was still ‘unconfirmed’. However, Ferguson said Fenwick vetoed the proposed match on Friday morning, during an online meeting with the Fifa-appointed normalisation committee and Rangers general manager, Kieron Edwards.

Normalisation committee chairman Robert Hadad, according to Ferguson, said that, due to the financial aspect of the game, the committee would take charge of any purse—on behalf of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA). And Fenwick subsequently said he had no time to face Rangers before the Soca Warriors depart next Thursday for their opening World Cup qualifier against Guyana on 25 March in the Dominican Republic.

The Warriors played Police FC in an exhibition match last night and won 4-1, while they face Defence Force on Monday.

“We are disappointed that we are not getting to play [the National Senior Team],” said Ferguson. “They said they didn’t have the time. But if you could play Police and Defence Force, then why not us?”

Ferguson denied he sought to embarrass the Warriors and said they first sent word to Fenwick, via Hadad, Romain and Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith, that they wanted a practice game in November 2020.

Rangers played Trinidad and Tobago three times under previous coach Dennis Lawrence and also had exhibition games against the Grenada and St Lucia national teams.

“We believe that playing teams that are better than us is a way to improve our performance,” said Ferguson. “Since November we have been seeking this game against the national team, but to no avail.”

The offer of a cash incentive, he said, was only made after Romain supposedly asked Ferguson for money to help fund the national team programme.

“What Adrian Romain was telling us is the national team is currently underfunded and getting problems with things like stipends for players and refreshments,” said Ferguson. “So what we said is we tried to mesh the two problems to come up with one solution. We normally offer our players a performance incentive, so we will do the same thing for the national team.

“Let’s play the practice game and should the national team win, they will get a performance bonus of TT$100,000. They could use this funding to pay their players and pay expenses and so on.

“And if we are allowed to bring spectators into the ground we would expect to bring in 1,000 patrons at TT$100 a ticket and we would give that to the national team too [along with any advertising revenue we raise from showing the match on television].”

Ferguson estimated the potential bounty for the National Senior Team at TT$250,000. Fenwick apparently said no.

Notably, Romain denied making any request to Ferguson for funding.

“We are covered with meals, transportation, water, etc,” said the Warriors manager.

Neither Fenwick nor Hadad responded to a request for comment on the proposed Rangers game.

Last night, the Warriors squared off against Police FC instead and it was not as straightforward as the final score might suggest.

The ‘Lawmen’ enjoyed more possession by the interval but trailed to a Duane Muckette penalty kick, after a rash challenge on Trinidad and Tobago flanker Jabari Mitchell.

Mitchell was one of two Police FC players in the Warriors team, along with goalkeeper Adrian Foncette.

The Warriors began in a 4-3-3 shape before switching to 3-4-2-1 in the second half, just as they did against the United States in January. Joevin Jones, who recently signed for MLS club Inter Miami FC, started as an inverted winger on the right flank before moving to left wing back after the interval.

It was largely an underwhelming performance from Fenwick’s troops, who lacked fluidity and presence down the centre while their first choice method of attack seemed to be a long ball behind the opposing defence, which rarely troubled Police.

The Pro League team lacked the legs to match the Warriors though—Fenwick made 11 changes in the second half—with four goals coming in the closing 20 minutes.

Jones crossed from the left for substitute Brent Sam to double their lead from close range, after a lapse in the concentration of their opponents. Raheim Jawahir pulled a goal back for Police with a deflected drive from outside the Warriors’ penalty area.

But another substitute, Sean Bonval, struck twice to create a lopsided score summary, which did not reflect the balance of play for the first 70 minutes of the affair.

First, midfielder Justin Sadoo broke the Police offside trap with a 50 yard lofted pass that Sam teed up for Bonval to tap home. Then a raking cross-field ball from the left found wing back Jesse Williams in oceans of space on the opposite flank, and his squared pass was again tucked away by Bonval.

Sadoo, incidentally, had replaced Michel Poon-Angeron at the base of the Warriors midfield after the latter player got a knock in the second half. Muckette faced some fierce tackles too and there may be some reason for concern among Fenwick’s medical staff this weekend.

Tactically, though, the Warriors seemed to lack the ingenuity in possession necessary to break down Police while their defensive press seemed aimless and rarely got results.

With barely two weeks left before the World Cup qualifiers start, it seems that the National Team’s hopes for success depend more on the quality of Fenwick’s overseas-based inclusions than in the cleverness of his own tactical manoeuvres.

Police FC head coach Richard Hood, who also served as the Women’s National Under-20 and Under-17 head coach last year, gave the Soca Warriors a mixed review.

“I thought that it was a competitive game played at a good intensity,” said Hood. “We caused the national team some problems early on and probably should have punished them, but we weren’t able to maintain the desired intensity due to low fitness levels and poor performances by substitutes.

“We allowed them three rather poor goals in the second half. Overall, I was happy with the first half performance given where we are in our training schedule.

“I thought that they weren’t at their best in terms of fluency and giveaways. I am hopeful however, that the scrimmage would have assisted them and wish them all the best in their upcoming games.”

On the same night, Rangers played two exhibition games at their Phase Two ground in La Horquetta, as their first team clobbered Malabar FC 11-0 while their second string team, according to Ferguson, lost 3-1 to a Maloney FC team that included former national flanker Nathan Lewis.

Rangers will have to satisfy themselves with club opposition for the foreseeable future.

Trinidad and Tobago team (4-1-2-3): 1.Marvin Phillip (GK) (21.Adrian Foncette (GK)); 16.Alvin Jones (19.Jesse Williams), 4.Leland Archer, 15.Justin Garcia, 5.Jelani Peters (15.Neveal Hackshaw); 14.Michel Poon-Angeron (6.Justin Sadoo); 10.Duane Muckette (12.Molik Khan), 8.Hashim Arcia (17.Sean Bonval); 3.Joevin Jones (7.Gary Griffith III), 9.Shackiel Henry (17.Brent Sam), 11.Jabari Mitchell (19.Marcus Joseph).

Unused substitutes: 12.Jamal Jack, 18.Reon Moore, 20.Joshua Alexander.

Technical staff: Terry Fenwick (head coach), Derek King (assistant coach), Keon Trim (assistant coach), Adrian Romain (team manager), Dr Akash Dhanai (team doctor), Captain Basil Thompson (logistics manager), Oswin Birchwood (trainer), Sion Cain (masseuse), Michael Williams (kit manager), Shaun Fuentes (media relations officer).

Editor’s Note: Several Trinidad and Tobago players used jerseys with the same numbers.

Ferguson calls for democracy in football.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

Terminix La Horquetta Rangers owner Richard Ferguson has called for democracy to prevail at the T&T Football Association and in local football.

Richards in an interview following Friday’s start to the Ascension-sponsored six-team Champion of Champions Tournament at his facility in Phase 2 La Horquetta. Ferguson, a fairy godfather to local football in the midst of scarce financial resources, was high in praise for the work done by the sport’s world governing body- FIFA, CONCACAF and the FIFA-installed Normalisation Committee and its chairman Robert Hadad.

“ The issue right now is that the debt is under control. I would say, that we really need to thank FIFA and CONCACAF for appointing the Normalisation Committee to handle the debt, to manage it and to deal with it.

And particular, we need to congratulate the chairman of the normalisation committee Mr Robert Hadad, as well as the other members. I think they have done a great job.

They have now controlled the debt. The debt was in fact taken to the court, it was approved and they are now in the process of organising the financing,” Ferguson said.

He noted: “ Having said that, it is important for democracy to germinate in the TTFA again and flourish. We want to take it back to the clubs, to the vote and we want to see democracy take over. And I am certain that Mr Hadad and other members of the normalisation committee will move on to grander prospects and opportunities in FIFA because they have done such a great job.

However, we need to move on and I think with the guidance of FIFA and CONCACAF, I don’t think the same problems are going to happen again, because I think FIFA and CONCACAF will take a closer interest in T&T, and we’re very willing to listen to them and follow their guidance in the future,” Ferguson explained.

Ferguson contested the elections of the TTFA back in November 2019 but ended up on the losing end. That election was won by the William Wallace administration which was later removed by FIFA in favour of the current normalisation committee, on the basis that the sport was on the verge of financial ruin.

Ferguson has now already made it clear that he will be among the presidential candidates when the election bell is rung.

Before this can happen however, the normalisation committee has to complete the FIFA mandate of running the TTFA’S daily affairs; establishing a debt repayment plan that is implementable by the TTFA; reviewing and amending the TTFA Statutes (and other regulations where necessary) and to ensure their compliance with the FIFA Statutes and requirements before duly submitting them for approval to the TTFA Congress; as well as organising and conducting elections of a new TTFA Executive Committee for a four-year mandate.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
