Computer question

Is it possible to boot from external Hard drive, hooked up through USB. i.e
Can it be the main drive ?
My laptop won't bootup, and I don't have a boot disk. Any idea what I can do? Thanks for help.

In de following article: Hard Drive Data Recovery, the author recommends booting from a CD instead of an external hard drive. Read from de 4th paragraph on.
